About this house rental
This spacious mountain home provides plenty of peace and quiet both inside and out. Located on a large mountainside lot and surrounded by trees it is the perfect location for wildlife watching and family gatherings. Enjoy the outside hot tub and barbeque on the back deck or just spend some time relaxing with a book and a beverage on the picturesque front porch. Families will enjoy gathering by the fire for a game of cards or favorite movie. A fully equipped kitchen with sitting space for spectators will make the resident chef smile and mealtimes a family affair. The upstairs loft provides a perfect place for separating the gang for quiet time. It is a short drive to Blackwater Falls, Canaan Resort and the “chic” towns of Davis and Thomas. Winter visits will DEFINITELY require 4-wheel drive vehicles.

Had a great time hanging out with friends and exploring all the Canaan Valley / Blackwater Falls / Dolly Sods area! Otters Den was great... nice kitchen, great deck to hang out in, plenty of space for 4 adults + 4 teen & pre-teen kids to all enjoy themselves! The hot tub was fantastic, we used it every day! It was great to be able to drive just up to the top of the mountain for amazing views of the valley and hit some of the trails in Dolly Sods.

The house was fantastic. Tucked into the mountain side with decks, firepit, hot tub and more. The home was very clean and well appointed. Large windows in the great room to take in the breathtaking views. One evening a large deer was looking at us maybe he was watching tv. The kitchen was very well stocked and roomy. The huge living room had double large sofa's and a big stone fireplace. There also was a 4 person table and chairs behind the sofa's for games, puzzles and more. Comfy beds and a big front porch with rockers. You couldn't ask for anything more at this rental.

The surrounding area is beautiful and many rentals are rustic and fit into the scenery. Almost as if you are a part of nature. This area has not changed in 25 years which is a good thing. Be prepared to relax and turn off the modern and fast pace of todays society. Some must see areas, Blackwater Falls (Lindy Point Trl), shopping in Thomas (Tip Top Coffee Shop is awesome), Seneca Rock-go ahead and hike up it is not to strenuous, Dolly Sods has many wonderful trails but is rocky in many areas and can be muddy after some rain. This rental is darker on the inside than the photos appear. The back deck with hot tub is a plus. And overall the place was clean (coffee pot could use more attention on cleaning).

Don't usually like staying within a gated community setting, as they tend to be too crowded and more hotel atmosphere -like. But barely saw any neighbors and entering and exiting community very easy. Loved the hot tub. It was great occupying the grand kids. No AC. Didn't matter. Day time temps in mid 70's and no humidity. Night-time temps had to have to covers on the bed. Great access to many outdoor activities and easy drive to Davis, Thomas, Parsons and the other 'Valley' towns. Definitely will look to book again, if we come back to the Canaan Valley.

Our family rented this house for a week. We loved the deck area with the hot tub, and fire pit. That was a great addition. We would love to see some decorative lights on the deck, that would make it sooo much more attractive. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed for our trip. The goose feather pillows were a little horrible to sleep on. Overall our family loved this house it was so cozy and had all the right amenities and was the perfect distance from the guard stand. We would book it again!!!

Very hard getting in and out with luggage. We have stayed at Otter's den on several occasions and will likely find our way back there again. It is a nice place and they have done a lot of work repairing the decks. It is spacious and comfortable and we love seeing the deer and wildlife. Best of Canaan is always professional and easy to get hold of if there is a problem. We really enjoyed our stay. Very comfortable for seven adults. Enough room to spread out and chat, play games and enjoy each others company. As we were older skiing was not in the plans - weather cooperated and we were able to enjoy fires at night to take off the chill. Kitchen was fully equipped, and this made meal prep easy. This rental had the most interesting posters and pictures - so tastefully and uniquely done.

Middle of the road house
House was ok. Smelled old. Definitely needs some tender loving care and attention. Needs common every day items; metal spatula for grill, aluminum foil, tape, more than three left over containers, more than two trash bags. Doable and ok house but compared to most doesn't measure up. Hot tub was very nice!
When arived there was a water issue, agency called water company and resolved. Sink drain did not drain, reported to agency.
Great views at surrounding area hiking places. However, very twisty windy up and down mountains to get there. If you love mountains and back roads great drive, if get car sick bad choice.
One of those places you visit once and say, " well it was ok but would never return."

We really enjoyed the cozy cabin for our ski vacation. The hot tub was great and the house was very open and fun for our two families. The only complaint we had was that the heat couldn't keep up. It was a very cold weekend (felt like -8) and it was cold in the house with the heat up and the fire place on. The chotchkies in the kitchen could use a good dusting too.

The house is in a great location of Timberline. There is a guard gate but plenty of room not like a subdivision. The house was large and would accommodate a lot of guest. The house is a little worn even for a ski rental. Kids explored the back yard and had a blast. Hot tub did get hot enough always a plus. Timberline ski resort is very close and friendly but it needs an update in a major way.

This property is a good value for the money. We used it for a bachelor ski weekend with 8 guys and had a blast. The amenities are older and somewhat worn but that is reflected in the price. If you want an brand new, up to date property expect to pay more. The location was great for skiing, short drive to Timberline. The only complaint is that a lot of the firewood was wet so it was hard to maintain a fire.

Nice house in beautiful area
I am a person that reads reviews so putting this out there in case it helps someone. This house is VERY dusty. I am not saying it's not clean, it was clean just dust everywhere. If you are a person with allergies, it's something to be aware of. Our only other thing was the coffee maker took forever (over an hour to brew) . Otherwise it was a fabulous stay in a beautiful area. We loved the layout of the house. We enjoyed the big windows with a view to the woods. We would book again

Very cute and very dusty
Otter’s Den is a beautiful property. We enjoyed the stay, location of it, and amenities. However, the property was ver dusty at check-in time, huge spider webs on all corners, and even the kitchen utensils were covered in a thick layer of dust. Bathrooms were clean, and so were the bed linens. , but the property is in big need of carpet replacement. You would think the guests would be received with a much cleaner property, it seems to me that the place was empty for a few months. We did appreciate the good working heating system and the hot tub, which was very clean. Bathroom mats need to be replaced badly.
Overall it was a good experience, but the fees charged, I would expect a cleaner place.

Otter’s Den fit our family and our vacation perfectly. We were looking for a house that comfortably fit all 8 of us and a space we could just relax, watch movies, and play games. This house had the perfect bed layout with a suite on the bottom floor for the grandparents and just the right amount of beds and Bathrooms upstairs for two couples and two kids. The house also had just enough seating. The huge fireplace was a beautiful centerpiece and heated the home nicely. But the baseboard heat in the all the spaces allowed for personalized heat in certain spaces. We liked making the bathrooms toasty before bed. The fire pit was really fun and the hot tub was amazing! Plenty of wood was provided for both the fireplace and fire pit. The kitchen was well stocked we stayed over thanksgiving and had plenty of serving dishes. We did bring our own aluminum pans to cook in. The only quirky thing in the kitchen is if you are cooking a lot (like thanksgiving dinner) you have to cook with the windows open. With no hood vent, the heat or smoke tends to set off the smoke alarm. I get hot when I cook so I didn’t mind. All appliances worked as advertised and the wifi worked well enough to hook up and watch movies on our Apple TV. Overall it was a great stay and we really hope to book it again next year. The house was great, the gated community was very quiet, and the Beat of Canaan management was really responsive. When we called to have the hot tub cleaned on our last day (we used it multiple times a day) they arrived within 10 minutes. We totally recommend Best of Canaan and Otter’s Den you won’t regret it.
