I believe that the cabin rented was not ready, so the owners gave us a whole beautiful home.
Everything was fantastic

If you want to visit a location with a strong "genius loci", meet an interesting host with a passion for history and an open heart and mind, stay here!
Nothing.

Wonderful bed and breakfast not far from Reykjavik with charm and able to accommodate a family of 4. Allowed us to out some food in a refrigerator and freezer in the home. Nice living are and dining area to sit in if wanted to not be in your room.

The hostess Emilia was excellent, very freindly and helpful. She covrred for her grandfather who was away.
The breakfast was a little light. Just oatmeal and waffles

I love Sæmi and Gamli Bær - would like to live there!

We came in the middle of a snowstorm and were welcomed by Saemi in the most gentle way. He made some waffles with cream and rhubarb and we had a nice chat with him and the other guests.
The place is an old farmhouse dating back to 1908 with a lot of terrific details.
The tiny church opposite the house is a very special place, too.
Our highlights were the delicious soup that Saemi made, the wonderful breakfast with the home baked bread and to jump into the hot tub at -7 degrees with snowy winds in the face…. A unique and perfect experience. Thank you Saemi!
Everything was perfect

Cute rustic house that is great value for money. Historic Husafell stone is a ‘stone’ throw away which made this trip extra special.
Samie, the host was very hospitable greeting us with waffles and a lovely dinner after a long day in the rain.
Bed was really comfortable and lots of history in a very old house.
Some of the facilities are a little bit dated but it is in theme with the rustic, traditional feel of the property and all is in working order.
Room got a little hot in during the night when trying to sleep but overall this was a lovely authentic stay.

The host is Fantastic, serving us dinner and breakfast, although the food was not luxury, it was the most delicious food I ever had. He shared with us his stories, culture of Iceland, he even tell us when’s the northern lights came out. I am so happy that I stayed there. Thank you very much, Sæmi!!
Also, Room is clean and bed is comfortable. Exceptional, 10/10!!
Nothing!

An authentic stay is a beautiful small town. The house was charming and cozy.

I’m not one for writing reviews but in this case I will. I stayed with my wife and 2 children with Sami at The Gai Baer. it was fantastic. it’s not a glamorous hotel or moderne air b&b but a proper homely place run by such a nice old guy who does it because he loves meeting people. he cooked our children waffles on arrival and gave us a fantastic soup in the evening of the first night. the breakfast was great and he cooked us an evening meal when we returned. I can’t recommend this place higher. if you are travelling to Husafel then stay here. you won’t be disappointed with the warm reception, home cooked food and great company.
nothing.

The breakfast was a feast. He makes the best soups, my children loved it. He is very kind and a great host, my children had fun here, my daughter called him Santa.
4.7
It is a old farm, so keep in mind that the house is old, however, rooms are spacious and confortables as the bathrooms too
Really nice farm to explore around

Best accomodation on our whole Iceland trip with the best kind owner i have ever seen. His waffles+soup was just the best ^^

Sam is an exceptional host who put lots of efforts into the maintenance of his historical farmhouse to create its cozy museum-like look and feel. His hospitality stretches beyond the 'standard' service: in addition to room accommodation he serves home-made soup in the evening and rich breakfast in the morning. He bakes his own bread which is absolutely delicious. His life stories are interesting and entertaining as well as the multiple historical and cultural artefacts he collects and displays in the house.

Great host, beautyful old, traditional house. I felt like in move from previous centoury. Host like Santa Close and his house.
I have to add that it was very clean i well equipped.
All was great

We lived in Guesthouse Gamli Bær at the last day of our wedding trip. It was an amazing place. Guesthouse is in too beautiful landscapes. It's very nice house near the river and mountains looks like a place from a fairytail. Our room was too clean, cozy, warm and very comfortable with a large comfortable bed, a lot of paintings and private shower. It was too cheap too! The guesthouse's owner was very friendly and hospitable. He cooked a wonderful breakfast for us and gave for us presents when we left him. I really enjoyed my life in this guesthouse and I only regret that we spent so little time there!

The property is a landmark! The host sami is very kind and friendly person - he helped us with the luggage straight away and also offered us soup as soon as we arrived. The soup was delicious and he was also preparing breakfast for the guests in the morning! Our room was spacious - shower was great and also wifi was good. It is an icelandic home - the feel is different.
All was great! However, unfortunately we didn't know that there was going to be breakfast served aswell (we bought breakfast from before our stay) - we would have tasted more of that delicious food prepared by sami! :(

When we arrived there was hot tasty soup waiting for us and in the morning there was an amazing breakfast (all included in the price). The accommodation was clean and warm. The owner was very friendly. I would 100% stay again.

The host was incredible. It felt like home, being with family. The homemade soup was out of this world good! Waffles on arrival. An amazing breakfast spread. I will come back again one day. Incredible value for money.
4.7
As soon as we have arrived we were welcomed by our amazing icelandic santa claus, he offered us drinks and delicious waffles with tasty creams. He also made super warming dinner and breakfast. He has interesting stories and has lots of knowledge about iceland! The rooms were organized and clean. We really enjoyed his company, and felt like home immediatly. We really really recommand!

Staying in this historic farmhouse being cared for by the owner Saemi has been an unforgettable experience. He makes you feel at home from the very first moment and it has been so much fun sitting together with all the other guests at his big dining table, being treated with absolutely delicious homemade soup, waffles, bread, different kinds of porridge, milkrice... his meals are worth a Viking's hunger! Saemi also knows the surrounding area as no other, every farm, hidden waterfall and special stone! If I return to Iceland I'll definitely stay again. The surroundings offer many beautiful hikes of different levels, and the hot tub is a great reward at the end of day. I highly recommend to stay more than one night.

One of the most memorable stays in Iceland. We could experience life in Iceland as it was a few decades ago. The room decor was vintage, but still sparkling clean and had everything we needed. The host was most welcoming, we felt like visiting a family member.
4.7
Thanks to Sæmi, we had a really icelandic experience. The dinner and the breakfast he cooked for us were something special, shared also with other tourists, Who talking about Iceland with. All the atmosphere in the house Is wonderful and Sæmi Is so nice.
4.7
Very generous owner. He gave us very tasty hot soup for dinner and the breakfast was also good, especially the oatmeal with skyr.

We had the best stay at Gamli Baer. The host, Saemi, is amazing - the warmest, kindest, and most interesting man. We arrived late on a Friday afternoon, having driven through the snow for several hours. Saemi greeted us with waffles and tea, which we sat down to eat all together whilst he told us about the best things to see near Husafell. After a quick walk (including northern lights all across the sky - Husafell is a great place to see them) we returned to the house to find that Saemi had cooked creamy tomato soup with vegetables and crispy bacon. It’s delicious, and the whole experience was made even better by the saga stories that Saemi told us of ancient Viking adventures. Saemi’s house is amazing - an old farmstead that has an ancient Viking tourist site (the Husafell stone) literally on site. It feels incredibly homely - we felt like we were guests of Saemi rather than in any sort of commercialised setup. The next couple of days were more of the same - plenty of incredible food, plenty of great stories, and a very warm atmosphere. I could not recommend staying with Saemi more - I’ll be sending all my friends and family his way when they head to Iceland!
nothing!

Amazing property with a character. Very homely. I had the best meat soup over there and we had a great time!
4.7
Beautiful surroundings, super kind and friendly owner, socialising with other guests.
Our daughter loved the waffles prepared by the owner. He even made some for her for the road - they made great airport snack.
If I had to find anything, you can hear other people's steps but it is a historic house so it is to be expected - part of the charm.

Host is amazing !
We loved our stay.

This guesthouse was humble but very cozy, and the owner, Sæmi, was a super sweet guy, like an Icelandic Santa. He was very welcoming and we chatted a bit about Iceland. I could have stayed days in this house if i cane with family.
