Travel along the Mt. Hood Scenic Highway for a stay at this charming home right on the Sandy River. This designer-owned getaway is a real jewel in the woods, offering bright colors, heated tile floors in the bathroom, and a large deck overlooking the river.
Perfect for a couple seeking a romantic retreat, the cabin features tall ceilings, lots of windows, and a classic style in the living room. A cozy couch is positioned in front of the woodstove for warming up on chilly nights. There's also a flatscreen TV and free WiFi for your entertainment. A large deck has a grill for alfresco meals and scenic views of the Sandy River. Sit outside on the deck with your morning coffee or lay down a mat and do some yoga in the evenings.
The compact kitchen may have a small footprint but it's big in style, with granite countertops and everything you'll need to create delicious meals! Start the morning with hearty bowls of oatmeal and finish the day with baked salmon and broccoli for a special candlelight dinner. Although there's no dishwasher, you'll be able to wash and dry together, talking about the day's adventures and making vacation memories. When it's time for bed, you'll find a cuddly bed with a memory foam mattress.
Located about two miles from Welches, and 42 miles from Portland, this charming cabin in the woods is tucked under towering firs directly at the river's edge. Once you're ready to get out and about, you'll love the Mt. Hood location! This quiet neighborhood is steps away from the Wildwood Recreation Site, a 680-acre park with many trails, picnic areas, and old-growth forest surrounded by Mt. Hood National Forest. The main trails at this site - Cascade Streamwatch and The Wetlands - let hikers explore the area's natural stream and wetland ecosystems in a breathtaking setting.
Come winter, you'll have your pick of mountain resorts - the closest being Mt. Hood Skibowl at 13 miles away. Timberline Lodge is only a 30-minute drive, and Mt. Hood Meadows is a 45-minute drive northwest. Closer to home, there's snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the national forest lands. On those nights you don't feel like cooking, the Rendezvous Grill is about a mile down the road in Welches for fried Willapa Bay oysters and ribeye steak with red onion and bacon jam. But you may just be tempted to stay home most nights and enjoy sunset cookouts on the deck.

I loved hearing the river flow and the cool nights.

The location is great. Small and cute. The only bummer was the showers water pressure was a trickle.

My hubbyh and I love this place... soooo clean!!! Very comfortable and the coming of the river were the best!!! We could not have been any happier

The cabin itself was ok, exactly as described. Theres no A/C or at least none that we seen but we didn’t need it. Lots of giant ants inside but that was expected in the woods. They were very strict about only 2 people being on the property, you’re not even allowed to have visitors which was kind of weird. There were no extra bed sheets so after a back and forth exchange with Vacasa they had a maintenance person come drop some off. She was really nice, her name was Rhonda. The location was very close to Mt Hood, Sandy river out back was probably the best part of the whole thing. Overall probably wouldn’t go back but we had a nice stay.

So for us, as a couple, we've been dating long distance for 5 months and this was going to be our first getaway together. We were looking for a secluded, scenic, nature fit. This place is pure magic. The photos don't do the setting justice. The Sandy River is just steps away and you can open the windows of the house and hear the river flowing by. The amenities themselves are excellent, clean, and organized. In particular, we like to cook in vs. eat out so we took the owner's advice and visited the nearby market. But you can never get everything you need to cook, however everytime we needed something, salt, cooking oil, seasonings, they were all right there. Thank you so much for such a memorable first getaway weekend from this loving couple.

Cute and cozy. Perfect for a romantic getaway!

Very nice place to escape to. Unfortunate dealings with the weather cutting off the power for most of the trip. There was also a bat inside the cabin which made for some excitement.

We both really enjoyed our stay, the cabin was very clean and organized and just the right size for romantic getaway. The wood burning stove was amazing and kept the place warm without making the place too hot (we stayed in December). Having the ability to walk down to the river was very nice and even better was being able to open a window and listen to the water. We will be looking to stay here again in the summer.

Such a sweet little place with everything you'd need for a single/couple or two good friends. Only downside (not the fault of the property) are the two property owners who has obstructed the trail so you can't get through for a long hike along the river. What a shame!

Clean, quiet, and exactly what we were looking for. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed and it was nice having a grill to use. Awesome location and loved listening to the river.

Only left the house once. Mostly sat by the fire reading and writing. This was a personal retreat and this place was perfect. Quiet and peaceful.

My boyfriend and I just finished our stay at Pappy's cabin. The location was VERY clean and cozy. Our only complaint was that we were not able to have our friends stay with us for the night after a long day of snowboarding on the mountain. Everything else was lovely!

This house was very quiet and next to a river. It came well stocked and had a nice wood burning stove. Everything was clean when I arrived. I will be back.
One thing that was not good was that the water heater did not work on the 2nd and 3rd day so I was forced to take extremely cold showers in already 15 degree weather.

Quaint, super clean and the location is so secluded even with neighbors!

Comfy cabin on the river with big trees! Near hikes and groceries. Loved it!

We enjoyed our stay. The cabin was very clean and comfortable. Very pretty setting. Only item I can even remotely comment as slightly negative was the lack of any water pressure. Otherwise a great stay! We would definitely book this site again.

We spent two nights at Pappy’s Cabin and enjoyed the sound of the River and the quiet neighborhood. The cabin is well appointed and squeaky clean. Would appreciate a chair in the living room. Would recommend.

Cabin was perfect...very clean (even the gas grill!), quiet, and well maintained. Kitchen was stocked with what we needed. This is my second stay at Pappy's Cabin and would come back again and again.

Pappy's was a very nice place exactly as described. The sandy river is a few hundred feet away. It's a perfect place for a couple. We would stay again.

This is a very cute cabin and it was nice and clean. Except for the dishes. Guests are expected to wash their own dishes, so(as you can imagine) they didn't do a great job. Of the 4 dishes I used, 3 were visibly dirty. There are also little unpleasant notes all over the place. Making sure that you understand that you will be charged for any misstep (like not doing the dishes, not putting the trash out to the curb, etc). Also, when I tried to watch TV it said that too many people were using the account. Come on, spring the $4.50 a month to get 4 users at a time. Anyway, it's a very lovely spot and quiet too.

We had a lovely time celebrating part of our 50th wedding anniversary at Pappy’s. The place was spotless. The housekeeper was just finishing up when we arrived. She was so welcoming and friendly! Give her a raise!!
Positives: clean as can be, nice location to various activities, bed was fairly comfortable, fun firepit for s’mores which we did last night. The sound of the river from the bedroom window at night was lovely.
Negatives: 1) Checkout is 10 am! Earliest checkout we’ve ever had. I wrote to vacasa asking for late check out since it was our anniversary but no reply.
2) You have to stand on the deck to see the river, Everytime you sit down, the view is obstructed. A wide opening with stairs off the deck going down to the back trail down to the river would provide a much better view from the deck.
3) The neighbors right to the left of us had removed most of the undergrowth between their house and the river, and subsequently had a much better view of the river which is why most people rent along the river. The trail to the river could be cleared better too.
4) Inside Pappy’s Cabin is a very large framed picture of another cabin nearby called Bob’s River Retreat. It looks sooooo much nicer and has a beach area on the river with chairs to sit in. That’s more what I envisioned at Pappy’s and that’s what was missing. I’d recommend anyone looking at Pappy’s consider Bob’s River Retreat instead! Pricing is very similar!

Sweet little getaway in the woods. Has everything you need including a riverfront seat to the sounds of the River. We left the window open at night for a “built in” sound machine. Great little spot for two.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this enchanting little cabin in the woods. We had a wonderful barbecue dinner out on the deck. The sounds of the river was so peaceful. The house is well appointed and very comfortable. thank you for sharing your home. We had a wonderful time.

Pappy’s cabin was perfect for the two of us. It is a short drive from the Portland area yet feels so far away once you arrive. It was a relaxing and refreshing weekend as we were able to unplug from the regular grind and just soak in the sights and sounds of nature. It rained on us the whole time so we weren’t able to enjoy the fire pit, but other than that it was an amazing weekend. The sound of the river fills the house if you open the windows and it is so peaceful. I highly recommend staying here .

This was the cleanest vacation rental that we have ever stayed in! You could hear the roar of the river and the rain on the roof which makes for a serene stay. Thank you!

The cabin was very comfortable and well equipped. We thought it was a perfect taste of life on the mountain in Orego. It was a great base to visit our daughter who lives in nearby Brightwood.

Pappy's Cabin was exactly what we were looking for to celebrate our anniversary. It was cozy and comfortable. The river is beautiful and the sounds were soothing. The temps were in the 20s, but the wood stove kept the cabin very warm. It's about a 5-minute drive from a good grocery store and several restaurants with takeout, which was a plus. My one note to visitors is that there are few available outlets in the bedroom, so you might want to bring an extension cord (we needed one for a CPAP machine). We had a lovely stay and wish it had been longer.

Everything about this cabin was perfect!! From the cleanliness to the majestic sound of the river flowing in the backyard, our stay at Pappy's did not disappoint at all. My husband and I felt as though we were at home due to the relaxing welcoming vibe the cabin provided. Would definitely stay again and again!!

Took Three days of r&r. Loved the cabin, it was immaculate and close to river. Loved listening to river. Wood stove worked perfectly. Will rent again in future.

Great location, immaculate home with all the amenities. Bed was a bit firm, but after a day of hiking it wasn't a problem. Owners might consider a padded mattress cover or topper in the future.
2.5 / 5.0
My husband and I had a 4 day weekend at Pappy's cabin and it was soooooo cute!! LOVED the way you can hear the river from every room....but if you didn't want to hear it...you just closed the window and no sound. The Cabin was updated and very clean!! The only 2 negatives I would say are....the river is AMAZING...it would have been nice to have little fold up lawn chairs to take down to the water to enjoy it....and the bed needs a foam topper! But we would love to stay at Pappy's again!!

The cabin was quaint and could have been very nice. The cedar smell was perfect for the setting, the trail to the river was nice. The heater and the wood stove made it cozy. However, the bed, pillows and sheets made it impossible to sleep. We again only stayed one night because the bed is like sleeping on a rock, the pillows are a billion years old and the sheets are like sandpaper.
It was very expensive for a small cabin in the woods that we could only use one night.
Came home more exhausted and not relaxed.
