Very nice hostel with friendly staff, the location is great, close to centre and the beach, but far enough away to to get a good night sleep. The kitchen is well equipped and they have family dinners :)

The hostel has a very welcoming and nice atmosphere. The rooms are not very special but the hostel has a very nice chill area where everyone is eating, cooking, and playing games together. So it’s a very nice place to meet new people! The staff is very friendly and they really add something to the open and fun environment.

That they didn’t have more nights available :(

I came here alone for a few days over new years eve and instantly knew it was a great choice. Social hostel, with group dinners if you want to meet people. Really helpful staff and great vibes here!

a very welcoming hostel. staff go above and beyond to be very personable with you. location is a nice walk into town and great beaches are walkable or bike-able. and between two national parks.

the kitchen is very crammed for the amount of guests staying at the hostel. the facilities are fine and usable but need some TLC.

Great location, clean hostel and nice outdoor common area with plenty of hammocks and a big kitchen with everything you need. Plenty of showers and toilets. The owner and staff are super friendly and organise "family dinners" multiple times a week, where they cook a shared meal for those who wish to join.

Music is played in the common area from 8am until 10pm or 11pm. I was in the dorm right next to the common area so I could hear it all the time, but it's fine if you're not a light sleeper or in the other dorms :)

the chill area is the best, love to hang out there and meet new people! everything is super clean too and the staff just helps out with everything. The shared kitchen has also a lot of basic things which you don’t need to buy yourself :)

The staff is super friendly and helpful. The common area is lovely and great to relax in. It's a nice quiet area, the hostel is rather small, what I liked. It's clean, has a well equipped kitchen and enough bathrooms. All in all, I highly recommend this place!

The good vibe and the staff. Super friendly!! Its a nice place to meet people from over the world. Jannis and his staff make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. We were glad to become part of the Kalunay family for a few days. We wish them all the best for the future!

The dorm rooms are small but then again thats expected for the price you pay. The showers could be better, I would suggest to have possibilities to dry the floor and I would change the light.

I really appreciated how hospitable were the owner and the team of Kalunai. The amenities were first class. A decent place to get rest and enjoy your vacations. I absolutely recommend it to every traveller.

the most chilled out place! good vibes and good people with amazing staff who are so helpful! the hostel is in a great location easy for getting the bus to the National park or walking distance to the beach.

The staff is very friendly and extremely accommodating! The atmosphere is comfortable and community oriented. The rooms are clean and the services provided are timely. The staff gives great recommendations and make even better adventure companions :D I was initially meant to stay a couple nights, and ended up staying for two weeks. Definitely difficult to say goodbye!

Basically everything. Great place to chill, meet new people and close to the center and beach. The place is really clean too, the bedsheets gets changed everyday. The staff is the best, they’ll help you with anything. If you’re reading this, don’t look any further, just book it ;)

Kalunai is perfectly located close to the beach and amenities of Puerto Viejo. I was welcomed by Gonza (sorry for the spelling) and immediately felt at ease. The buildings doors all lead to the dormitories for step in access. Outside is a large open kitchen with two large social tables, many seats and hammocks to relax and socialise but at the same time also having some time to yourself. I stayed in a 4 bed dorm that was cosy but immediately outside the room was lockers and a table for which you could easily pack your bag or use as a desk to work from. There was also a shower/toilet for the three rooms that were in that section as well as more showers and toilets outside should it be occupied. Yanis (again not sure on the spelling) the owner was also very friendly and approachable as well as helpful. He offered to exchange my colons with him for dollars and gave me a fantastic rate. It was easy to use the laundry service and I received my laundry the same day. I also took advantage of the shuttle service to Bocas and that was easy with a pickup from the hostel. This hostel is very social but after 10:30 is quiet time so is suited to those wanting to sleep instead of party. In my opinion it has got the balance of party/social/quiet right! Kalunai is great value for money and I wouldn’t hesitate staying here again in the future.

It happened to be quite hot during my stay and I was in a top bunk sharing one fan with someone on the other top bunk. So I didn’t really feel the benefits of the fan because it mainly faced the other bed. I noticed the bottom beds each had their own little fans fitted, something like this for the other bed fixed on the wall could be quite useful. This really is a nit pick as I really did enjoy my stay here.

My plan was just staying one night as I am travelling around Costa Rica however the place and the people easily changed my plan! I ended up staying longer and super happy about it. The staff here is the best! Gonzalo and Aaron made me feel at home, their vibes are priceless and they were always prompt to help with anything. High knowledge about their surroundings and beautiful smiles 24/7. The facilities were great and I could just live there! Great ratio price-quality. Hope to come back soon! I miss you guys and muito obrigado por todo. Los espero en Portugal :):)

super nice social hostel! one of the first times for me staying in dorms and it was a very good experience! the girls i slept with where really nice. the staff helped me with everything I needed.

the bathroom is shared with another dorm & private room, it’s not that bad but just so you know. curtains at the bed could make it even beter!
