I stayed in Casa de Emily with my wife, son, and parents for a month over the new year. What a great place for a family gathering! I can confirm the comments made by previous reviewers. It is a bit of a walk to the center of town, but it’s interesting, and easy to get a taxi back if needed. The house is spacious with lots of privacy between the rooms and comfortable common spaces. The rooftop deck is amazing. What a place to experience Oaxaca from! I will recommend Casa de Emily to my friends and enjoy the memories of the time we spent there.

Overall a nice spot to stay at. honestly the only reason I would stay here again is for the view and attentiveness of Sam, the young man who hosts there. He was super responsive, very helpful, and available. We stayed there 7 days, honestly the steps we had to take to get to the apartment were deadly hahahah mostly because we had little ones to carry up a long with all the bags we had, so for a family with little ones I wouldn't recommend. There was plenty of space the rooms were pretty big however this apartment could really use a deep clean, we turned on the fan and could see dust going down and the light fixtures have layers of dust and spider webs. The other thing we saw a lot were huge red ants all over the house. The main bathroom has a shower head that shoots water towards the door and is unusable, I did tell Sam about this and he mentioned the plumber would go but never did, but fortunately the other 2 bathrooms worked just fine. We enjoyed our stay and our kiddos loved playing at the top while looking at the view.

It is in a beautiful, local neighborhood and within walking distance to most anything we wanted. Sam is the best and was so helpful in arranging transportation for our tours to Monte Alban, Hierve el Agua and Mercado de Tlacolula. He also had lots of suggestions for local attractions. But, most of all, I am extremely thankful for Anthony's and Sam's willingness to work with us when we had last minute changes to our booking. We originally were scheduled for six adults but two of our family were unable to come (lost passport) and we had other family (our son, daughter-in-law and grandson) booked at another property. We realized that a lot of time was going to be spent arranging transportation from one house to the other so we asked Sam if we could have our son and his family stay with us in the Penthouse. He told us he would speak with Anthony and let us know. Not only did Anthony say this was okay, Sam brought a twin-bed in so my grandson didn't need to sleep on the couch. We loved Oaxaca and hope to return and we will always look for this property when we come. Thank you so much, Anthony and Sam, for an amazing vacation !!!

A further private terrace offers even better views with the entire city laid out in front of you – at night the view is BREATHTAKING ✨ . . ((The access involves quiiiiiite a few steps, so unfortunately it is not for the physically challenged.)) The walk to the historical ‘Centro’ is a nice 20 minute downhill stroll through a real Oaxacan neighborhood, but after a day of being out and about we took a taxi home every evening that costs about 60 pesos ($3usd) and was very easy. It was a good neighborhood with a couple of convenience stores nearby and the kindest people you’d ever want to encounter! The host Sam was very kind and easily accessible which was helpful when booking taxis for excursions. I’ll definitely be back!

At first you may be a little turned off by the neighborhood or the dated worn quality of the apartment and furnishings, like we were. But as the week went on, we grew to love the space and even felt proud that we were staying in a real neighborhood instead of in a touristy whitewashed area. The view was always the best highlight. Sam, the apartment manager who lives on site was, as others say "White glove service"! Cute as can be and so responsive, friendly and helpful. This was the first time in my long history of rentals that the apartment host offered to purchase a small list of grocery items (to be reimbursed by us) before we arrived. What a luxury to not have to forage around town for your limes, wine, beer, coffee, and breakfast items right at first! Sam even had ice cold mugs waiting in the freezer. Pros and Cons (for us, may not be for others) Pros: View, view, view, rooftop space view, and did i mention the view Very safe and secure feeling. Behind two locked doors and perched up high on the hill. Two of the 3 bedrooms VERY large and comfortable, very separate and private spaces Size-- super high ceilings, very spacious apartment. Location-- outside the noise and bustle of centro area Cons: Third bedroom is so small and dark, no windows, and located outside the apartment proper, up the back steps toward the roof. We were so turned off by this bedroom that two of us (3 friends) shared the large bedroom instead of one person staying "out there." Crushing poverty next door, people living in literal tin shacks. But Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in Mexico, so you're going to see the full spectrum here. Stairs-- not really a con for us, but just to point out that there are a couple flights of steps up to the apartment.(But more steps=better view!) If your mobility is affected these are not good. There was a bathroom pipe odor in the largest bedroom, and large water bugs and a lizard that showed up now and then. Another thing that may freak you out completely right at first, but then you kind of get over it. Certainly we would have preferred not to see these on late night trips to the bathroom.... :( Nothing like that in the second bedroom/bath though. But overall, we would stay here again. Give it a chance!

From the views and the layout (it's BIG) to the warm and helpful owner and host, this home far exceeded expectations! The view itself is worth going back for, in fact we almost wish we stayed in the house more to enjoy it. We were only in town 5 days and so spent most of our time out exploring but the sunrise and sunset were worth being home for. The owner of the property and the host who lives in an apartment below this one were extremely responsive and helpful with anything we needed, whether it was recommendations for restaurants and things to do or anything to do with the home they were which to be of service. We will be back to stay again and HIGHLY recommend this place for anyone wishing to enjoy a great home away from home and who enjoy walking and exploring the town.

Wonderfull spot. Kitchen a bit tired but overall a great experience. The views from inside and outside are amazing.

The property has a great view of Oaxaca and we saw several thunderstorms rolling in, which was beautiful. The apt. is close to the zocalo and central area (15 minute walk) but it is a bit uphill on the way back so you might want to take a taxi. We did several times. There is a coffee shop 3 buildings down and we counted 10 little grocery stores in a 10 block radius. Great view and great area.

Anthony's apartment exceeded our expectations. The view is incredible and private roof deck really special. Everything was clean and spacious. I would stay here again! -Alexia Walldorf

Basically loved the place. We had 3 couples for the 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms (though my wife and I drew the short straw in terms of the room and bed) and the multiple common rooms were great. Good kitchen, pretty well supplied. We also had access to the roof with a glider and a gazebo--fantastic view of city lights at night. Downsides: roosters early in the morning from across the street, dogs barking all night, and a water pump that gets loud for 15 mins. twice a day (near our BR). Upside; living on a real Mexican street, to go to the grocery store, a fluff-and-fold laundry place, and a cool music club with a local band. It takes maybe 20 minutes to walk to downtown, and taxis are easy and cheap. Anthony, who manages the place, was always very responsive.

The apartment was large and well furnished. The rooftop deck was wonderful in the afternoons and evenings. The kitchen was well appointed including with good knives. Anthony was very responsive when we had questions or issues. It is located a little walk from the main tourist areas. If you are coming from the north end, the walk is a gradual uphill, but if you are coming from the zocalo there will be a bunch of stairs to get to Panaramico del Fortin. The stairs definitely got easier as the week progressed. There is also a couple of flights of stairs up to the apartment from the street on the west side of the building (visible in the one photo.) So if stairs are a problem for you this would not be a good apartment. But you couldn't get the elevation and the views without a few stairs. It is worth exploring the area around the apartment. Although outside of the main tourist area, there are some good restaurants and groceries close by. Since this was the second week of our stay in Oaxaca, the washing machine machine was very appreciated. A dryer is not needed as the sunshine and dry air dried clothes very quickly on the lines. There were two very nice bedrooms and bathrooms in the apartment. There is an additional small bedroom with bath outside the back door on the stairs to the roof, still inside the private space of the apartment. I guess it was probably originally a servants room originally. That would be good for a single person only. Anthony has prepared a binder of notes and suggestions about the apartment, the local area and Oaxaca in general. But the binder has been used a lot and has become disorganized. It would be helpful if Anthony would reorganize and update it. But that was a small issue.

Beautiful and clean home with an amazing view. Home is withing walkibg distances into the town center. Anthony is a wonderful host, easy to communicate with and super helpful. He organised taxis to pick us up at 5:30am to take us to the airport- no fuss! 5 star!

Our stay at Anthony's place was dream like. Every morning, I drank my coffee peacefully staring at the panoramic view of the city from either the living room or the rooftop terrace--I don't know which I enjoyed more We rented for a week two houses from Anthony--the top three bedroom and immediately below-the two bedroom. Both were large and seem to have been professionally decorated with so much of the little touches which made you feel comfortable and at home. Both have large master bedrooms, and good size second bedrooms. Both have sufficient plates and pans should you desire to cook dinners. At first impression, you wonder about the neighborhood since the surrounding houses seem not as beautiful as Anthony's. But you will find the neighborhood extremely friendly. In walking home from the historic district, every person greets you with a friendly "Buenas Noches." And we became friends with some of the neighbors. It is a nice walk to the historic district, about ten minures. And if you are going to the Guelaguetza in July, it is a short walk to the long stairs called the "Esacalera" which takes you the venue. Most of all you will enjoy Anthony and his family. I have never met an owner so responsive. One time I emailed Anthony about where to find more sponges. When we return home, I was embarrassed to find new sponges in the house. One final thing. I saw one negative review for August. It is the only negative review found, and it should not be given much credibility,

We went to Oaxaca with family and friends to celebrate the Day of the Dead. Some of our party stayed hotels but this property was the gathering point daily as it's location is perfect and the view is amazing. Sometimes in a large group the coordination can be problematic but the owner Anthony was always available to advise or to set things up...including a spectacular rooftop dinner for 13 which included a guitarist playing for a sunset happy hour. You have about a 15 minute walk to downtown (centro) a great coffee shop a block away and many tiendas to get you anything you need So, enjoy the wonderful city and this world class nighttime city view

I rented this house for my birthday get away to Oaxaca and it was great. The house was big, clean and had everything we needed. We were welcomed by the caretaker upon our early arrival. She showed us around the house and offered her assistance if we needed anything. There were small markets we could walk to from the house as well as street food stands. The city center was a few blocks away or you can catch the bus. We had a great time exploring the city. Anthony was very response to all my emails before our trip and he also called us to see if we needed anything during our trip. The house has a binder filled with helpful information regarding tours, restaurants, recommendations and other information. During our trip there was a lighting storm we were able to catch the beautiful sight over the mountains from our patio. We had no problem during our stay, and will definitely use this house again. Thank you Anthony for allowing us to stay here

We didn’t have running water one day and weren’t able to take a shower in the morning, until late at night. I WANT A REIMBOURSE! A lot of stairs to carry our luggage, the showers didn’t have a curtain so the water wet the bathroom floor. I was very disappointed to bring my family to a place as cheap as this. It was overpriced for its quality and location

Our group of 4 greatly enjoyed our stay in Casa de Emily. The apartment was all that we expected, and offered a full range of comfortable and ample living space and furnishings. The view day-or-night from the patio on the roof can't be beat, and we often dined under its ample gazebo. Our host Anthony was responsive and helpful in making our stay a true delight, with many helpful suggestions about Oaxaca through his website. One surprise might await those who have not previously stayed in a residential area where people keep roosters - be prepared for a morning wake-up call at 5 AM! Otherwise, its a very peaceful and safe neighborhood. You also have a famous neighbor: the renowned singer Lila Downes lives two doors from the apartment and her house sports a small but vibrant cultural center that occasionally offers evening performances by local musicians along with excellent coffee and hot chocolate.

Anthony, the owner followed through on each request we had in a timely and honest way. That was refreshing. There were six adults in this house for seven nights. This home provided perfect communal times together as well as ample space for our alone time. We cooked our own breakfast each morning and the kitchen had all the utensils and appliances we needed. The roof top terrace was perfect for an evening "happy hour" for good conversations and enjoying the views of the city. We chose to walk most places and we found it easy to get to central Oaxaca, to shop, eat and enjoy the journey along the way. Lastly, there were several little grocery stores very close to the home where we could get water, eggs, and other items needed for breakfast. On Saturday night, after six days in this location, we all agreed we were glad we chose this home and would stay here again.

Loved the view and the location. We enjoyed the walk to town. Even the walk back was fine although we did take a taxi plenty of times at night. Well equipped. So relaxing, roof top garden space is lovely for sunset and BBQ. Anthony was great, very helpful and quick to respond. We definitely recommend this place and would stay here again .
