I have been staying at the Pestana Carlton for many, many years ( since 1990's) and am ALWAYS looking forward to going back! The hotel location is superb, the access to the sea wonderful, the various swimming pools and hotel facilities pretty good and most of all, every single member of staff treats us like family! All staff is very professional, hard working and they all make you feel welcome. Just returned from a 5 week holiday at the Carlton and cannot wait to book again!

We have been staying in the Pestana Carlton since 1994. It has a great location with selection of nice restaurants in walking distance. It is also close to Funchal city center. However, standards are declining with no lift from upper to lower pool levels and poor service in upper pool cafe. The ladies in the Atlántico Bar were amazing - friendly and efficient.

The Pestana was only 20 mins from the airport, very convenient. The hotel and it's staff were absolutely fantastic. From the moment we arrived we were greeted with smiles. The reception staff were friendly and very efficient. The restaurant staff were so obliging and helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed the week we stayed, great choice for our wedding anniversary. Highly recommended.

For the amount of money I'm paying it's not cheap expect more to be fair Have been coming for years and it's in a slow decline Rooms are so dated ,carpet rank stupid shower on the taps still no slip mats unless requested I'm an old fella. In my opinion just cutting things to save money like the chocolate bar that's get smaller but the price continues to rise Need to up the game to match the new hotels

Everything was nice but felt that the housekeeping should do a better job of replenshing, toiletries, teas, face cloths, towels.. rooms were cleaned but never replenished. Also never were beach towels exchanged for new ones. Breakfast was good but felt some of food items could had been changed up a bit

Excellent customer service, room view & property surroundings, it happened to be my birthday the day we checked in, a bottle if champagne was delived to my room with apples, very nice touch, classy resort...

Excellent hotel located in city center with amazing views. Breakfast options were extensive and delicious. Housekeeping staff always friendly. Everything was amazing and we will definitely be back .

Great property, but very dated which makes things seem dirty when they clearly clean daily. Breakfast had a lot of options but quality was pretty low. Overall great place which has become average over the years. Also, the parking is absolutely brutal.

Lovely outdoor space , spacious room although not happy with the lack of cleaning of the room even after reporting the problem twice. Nice gesture from the public relations Manuela on our 3rd and last night at the hotel. Much appreciated. The communication among members of staff and specially the management should improved.

Hotel was nice for a resort. Hallways and pub are dated.

Great location, lots off restaurants near by. The buffet breakfast was delicious and had lots of options. Easy walk to downtown Funchal along the pier. The staff were so kind and helpful. Rooms were cleaned everyday. Free parking available but is quite tight and first come first serve. There is paid parking available.

Very walkable to centre of town

The location of the Pestana Carlton is ideal. It is an easy walk to the old town and toward the Lido hotel zone. There are great restaurants and shopping close by. The downside is that the hotel is so large that there is no personal touch. Most of the staff were pleasant but didn’t go over and above to make you feel welcome. The rooms were adequate but could use updating. The balcony has beautiful views of the harbor and ocean.

Good location good swimming pool room was spacious

I stayed here while on a trip with a friend celebrating both our birthdays and we had an amazing stay! The room was perfect, and both outdoor and indoor pools were very relaxing uma amazing views! The breakfast had a great variety of food and freshly cooked food. What made the big difference in our stay was definitely the staff, all very kind and helpful with everything we may have needed. We could not go without leaving a special thank you to Manuela in reception for her kindness throughout our stay ☺️

This is a 3-star hotel. Anyone who thinks otherwise has not stayed at a good hotel. The sign above the entrance has 5 stars, which must either reflect that the hotel was opened in 1972 or bribes paid to the star raters. The hotel could be 5-star only after the rooms are renovated, and the pool area, spa and gym are substantially upgraded. There are many 3-star hotels with comparable or even superior restaurants.

yes, the hotel is a bit old-style but still a good value for the money. We liked the breakfast, the terrace, the spa, the bed itself ! what could be improved is the heating of the pool and the hotel could be refreshed a bit to make it a jewel

Brilliant hotel. Great location, big room with amazing views. Only stayed for 2 nights on a business trip, so shame didn’t have the time to enjoy the beautiful facilities.

The location was great and the receptionists were very helpful. However, i would say this hotel has become run down with main furniture items being cleaned but furniture that isn’t really seen (side table for example) are filled with dust. The other workers (at the pub, bars and restaurant) were not friendly - looking annoyed when asked for a menu… the beds are not comfortable at all!! We were not able to have a full nights sleep as the bed was hard as a rock and the A/C made so much noise and did not cool down the room at all. The pool was also freezing and filled with debris and bugs. However, the pool at the very bottom was clean I’ll give it that. Overall, not very impressed and wouldn’t stay here again.

Beautiful hotel, staff very helpful and friendly. The view of the ocean from the balcony was just incredible.

Great location and lots too do

Nice area walkable to city centre. This is 3.5 star property not 5 star property. The building is 50 years old. The towels were ripped and in very bad condition. Pool towels very small and in poor condition. Long waiting time to get in the breakfast restaurant. The staff did not speak Portuguese and hard to understand.

We had a family room at the front of the hotel which was a great size. Breakfasts were good. WIFI is not great in the rooms or around the hotel. But overall very nice.
