The dinner alone gets a lot of points. Easily some of the best food I have ever had at a ryokan.
The Men’s Onsen is a bit small outdoors. It was difficult to get my large western body (5’10”, 185lb) in the outdoor pool. The indoor pool was nice.
The biggest problem is the old wooden floors. Upstairs neighbors had kids and I got virtually no rest. The tranquil atmosphere of autumn in the mountains of Japan was disturbed by little giants trampling overhead.
Overall, great place, but I hope you get lucky with who stays above you.

Very nice location (in the hills, near the bus stop, 10 mins from Ashi lake). Easy check-in (although English is nearly non-existent). Good structure, rooms are nice and wide, traditional futon beds, hot fans and air conditioning. Working at the garden since like a year. Did not found any onsen/public bath. A little overpriced for what it has to offer.

The hotel is nice however the access to its remote location is terrible during winter or early spring when snowing. The only public bus to this Ryokan stopped operating. We had to take very expensive taxi (>8000yen) to reach this place. getting out of it on next day is even harder as there is no taxi coming to this Ryokan and the hotel staff asked us to walk 40mins to the nearest train station! It was still snowing that time and we had 3 kids with us! It is not possible for us to walk this far with big luggage’s as well. Luckily we finally able to get he Hotel staff to send us to the train station in his own car. Really thanks to the 2 young men tnb he didn’t front desk.
front desk can’t speakers mich English as well...

This was my first time staying at an onsen ryokan, but it was much better than expected. The staff was friendly, helpful, and professional. The room was roomier than what I imagined, but I guess I was staying at a place meant for two people by myself. Dinner was excellent, and the breakfast buffet was great too. Dinner was fully Japanese while the breakfast was continental with a heavy Japanese slant. The onsens were great. I'd recommend using the bath in the early afternoon or the early morning before people start arriving if you are not comfortable with stares. The outside bath was a bit small but charming. The only bad thing I can say about this place was the fact that it's a bit old, but that's to be expected from some place that's more than 300 years old. It was very clean though.
Will stay again, next time with another person to play table tennis with.

Hotel is abit dated and onsen abit old, but I enjoyed the rustic feeling.Excellent service and delicioilus kaiseki dinner, more than made up for everything

Located just outside the main Hakone area (10 mins by bus from Moto-Hakone), the ryokan is located in a small residential village without any other touristy developments around it. Thus it was surprising to find such a well-developed ryokan, that can cater to large crowds, rather than the usually smaller minshuku, in such an area.
Facilities were well developed, with an indoor garden, 2 distinct baths, a small souvenir shop and basically everything you should and would expect from a ryokan. Place was clean and spacious as well.
Food too was great. Dinner was kaiseki style with dishes that are visibly Japanese, yet something I have not eaten anywhere else before. Breakfast was a Japanese/Western-style buffet that had a very good range of items.

Property is a bit old and badly needs a renovation. The onsen is dated and gives a not so clean feeling.

Was okay. The rooms are spacious. Positive is the quietness and less amount of people. The food was great.
There were major issues with the dinner.
Hotel staff and service were wonderful and friendly however which went a long way.

First, the good points: dinner was very good, and nicely presented. The rooms are very large by Japanese standards, if you are OK with sleeping on mats on the floor (and the pillows they provide are microscopic). Has its own hot spring with two different public areas and three private areas (you get one free use of a private area per stay).
However, the hotel is in a rather run-down condition. Parts of it smell strongly like mildew (fortunately not our room or the eating area). Since the weather was cool, we left the windows to our room open at night, as we found them when we entered the room. Big mistake! There were holes in the screens and we were eaten alive by a large flock of mosquitoes. The person manning the front desk at night knows no English except numbers. Only accepts cash for incidental expenses. Breakfast is a standard Japanese hotel breakfast, maybe a little above average.
While set in a nice rural valley, the village of Ashinoyu is dilapidated and contains only the Ryokan, and car-repair shop, a tiny bank, and a rather sorry-looking dollhouse museum.
Bus service to rest of the area works pretty well during the day.
They only promise free wifi in the lobby, but we could pick it up in our room. It worked OK. This was fortunate, because our room here was the only place in Japan the portable wi-fi we rented didn't work.
