Unfortunately, I have to give this property 2 stars, the extra star mostly just for the convenience of the location. The online pictures made the house look eclectic but still cute, upon arriving however, the house felt very cluttered and there was a strong odor of cat urine or something similar. There was dust and grime around the doorways, no fan in the very small bathroom or bedroom, and we saw 2 large bugs in the first 15 minutes (which I have photos of). It ended up just feeling entirely too uncomfortable so we booked a hotel for our stay instead. It was a bummer because this place wasn’t cheap. There’s just too many other rentals in Fredericksburg to book a poor one such as this one.

Beautiful home centrally located, within walking distance to Main St shopping and eating. Quiet, serene back patio. Pleasant hosts!

Great property, awesome management and wonderful stay. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The location was perfect. On our second day we walked to every area we visited because of the perfect location. We highly recommend this property. The hospitality was great.

Our hosts were so nice and shared with us the history of the house and the neighborhood.
We enjoyed the fresh flowers throughout the house. The house is so close to Main Street too. Very enjoyable stay.

Convenient, walking distance to main street, easy parking, & safe. Lousy continental breakfast (packaged cereal, milk & Miss Debbie snacks) and owner not the friendliest individual. Had an issue with toilet flushing, informed owner and owner left plunger in hallway or us to remedy ourselves.

Great stay
Very clean and convenient location at a great price.

Overall is was fine. The breakfast was the best part. While the ladybugs were charming, falling on the bed from the skylight was alarming. Also the multiple cockroaches were bad, dead and alive. The bathroom door did not shut or lock. The backyard was being used for junk instead of the charming pictures I saw online.

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at your historic home for our 40th anniversary.
You and your husband are very hospitable and thoughtful in making our stay comfortable
and welcome. Thank you for the delicious breakfast that we enjoyed both mornings. We
had a relaxing and lovely time in Fredericksburg.

If you looking for super friendly innkeepers, delicious breakfasts, incredibly convenient location, and a house filled with beautiful antiques, then Gillespie House is a perfect choice for you. We spent our honeymoon here and had a wonderful time. If you're looking for high-end creature comforts, keep in mind that this is an older B&B. The mattress is a little worse for the wear, as is the couch in the sitting room, and the sink, toilet, and shower could all do with a little updating. But that didn't stop us from thoroughly enjoying our stay.

We had a great time. The accommodations were a little too warm during the night. The suite was beautifully decorated but a little too crowded. Really liked how close it is to Main Street.

We had a lovely time. Our hosts were very accommodating. Their home was old and quaint and offered everything we were looking for. The breakfast Maggie prepared each morning was delicious. We will be back.

My husband and I planned a weekend trip to Fredricksburg and booked the Gillespie House: East Suite. The place was gorgeous and had all the right touches! We loved waking up to the smell of breakfast being cooked each morning of our stay, and was it delicious! The couple that looked after the house made she that we had everything we needed, but were never pushy and gave my husband and I our privacy. The room was clean and was a wonderful home away from home - not to mention this place is a block from Main Street shopping, so in a very convenient location!
This place was definitely one of the highlights of our Fredricksburg trip!!!

Such a great visit! We felt like we were visiting family. Maggie was a super host---so thoughtful, kind and respectful. I requested decaf coffee, and she made a special trip to pick some up. So much more enjoyable than a hotel. The home was in a perfect spot---one street off Main. Beautiful home and very clean! We will go back!

Most Disappointing Stay in a B&B Ever
Gillespie House East Suite - I can't remember being this disappointed in anything. Never in a B&B experience. I feel we were misled and this property is misrepresented. We buried our 88 year old mother in February and the last time she was in the hospital, she helped me plan and make arrangements for this trip. It was a thank you to my sister and brother-in-law for all they did for our mother over these last years. We live in Houston and I was not about to do much of the at home care for her. After she died, this trip became even more special. One of the most special reasons to indulge and stay at a B&B is for the Breakfast. Our hostess tried to hand me 2 small bottles of milk as I was walking up the stairs and said this was for our breakfast. I understand covid concerns, but she was not so worried about covid that she had enough respect or concern for us to wear masks in the house common areas. When I got upstairs there were some out of date Little Debbie cakes and some cups of children's cereal, NOTHING ELSE. I understood breakfast would be in our room, but I had no idea it would be so disappointing. We did find wonderful breakfast spots during our stay. Our bath/shower was disgustingly moldy and nasty. I took my pocketknife and scraped scum off of the tile and from grout lines. I have supporting pictures. When we arrived, there was a used piece of toiletpaper attached to the inside of the toilet bowl that was still there when we departed. I understand this is an old house, but the toilet was disgusting. Most of the glaze has been worn off of the bowl and it is most unsightly especially for the amount charged for this stay. There was NO shower soap and 1 opened already half used bottle of shampoo in the shower with someone else's hair caught under the half screwed on cap. We stayed 4 nights and at no time did the owners check in with us to see if we needed anything else or check our rooms and replace needed items. My brother-in-law cut a bar of Irish Spring he had brought and shared with us. We checked in the cabinet in the bathroom and in the supply armour in the hall. There was only conditioner. When we arrived, there were 2 bottles of water in the minifridge that were not replenished during our 4 night stay. Do not expect a comfortable queen bed in this suite. It was the most uncomfortable bed I have experienced in many many years. I should have used my better judgment and find other lodging when I first sat on the bed. Our first night, the owners fried salmon patties or something that made staying in the house almost impossible for the next 4 days. Most disrespectful for guests to endure. I understand that fresh flowers were part of the decoration of both suites. I emailed the owners 2 days before we were to arrive to have flowers in my sister's room when we arrived to express to her what a special daughter and sister she is and how much it means to me for the care she gave our mother. I simply asked if they could meet the florist for the delivery. I did not get a reply until after we were already on the road and I did not see the reply until we were in bed our first night there. My request was not answered, I was just told not to worry about it, flowers would be in the room when we arrived. We come from 4 generations of florists. I had specific flowers I wanted and a specific way I wanted them delivered. MOST IMPORTANTLY was the card message and what I wanted to say to her and to thank her with all my heart. I let that pass. The following night, I got an email with a request for payment for $75 for floral services for the flowers in my sister's room that clearly are stated as complementary in each room. I could understand if there was some misunderstanding, I did not ask them to put flowers in her room, I asked them to meet a florist to have MY flowers delivered. At no time was I told there would be a $75 charge for anything. I feel I was clearly being scammed. When I booked these rooms, there was a $35 charge shown for damages and never was it disclosed that it was non-refundable. As there were no damages to the property, I inquired when we would be getting this refund and received a quite rude reply that we were told when we booked of this. There was NO mention of it, but it was on the invoice but with no explanation. I feel if this charge is non-refundable, it should be disclosed. The A/C in this suite hardly works. I can only imagine what is was like in the heat of the summer. I specifically chose this lodging so that we could have the entire house to ourselves without other guests. I told the owners when we arrived that we would like to keep our doors unlocked between our suites as we were the only guests and she acknowledged. Over the next two days, we came back to the residence on two occasions and the front door was unlocked and there was nobody in the house. We did not leave the door unlocked. I had a laptop and my tablet and my sister had all of her jewelry in her room. I had to ask them to keep the residence secure while we were there. I have pictures of what the front of this place looks like and this is grossly different from the pictures shown for promotion of this property. Clearly deception. This is not a case of it being early spring and things are not out yet. THIS IS CLEAR AND DELIBERATE DECEPTION. I have chosen to stay in B&Bs when I travel for over 40 years...since my first B&B experience in the 1970s. I continue to chose to stay in a B&B for the ambiance and special feeling given to guests of a B&B stay. From now on, I will be more diligent in making my reservations. I was leery when I only saw 2 reviews since 8/2019.

Very convenient location. Parking for two cars was limited and had trouble exiting vehicle because of plants growing to curb. Need room for egress. House is nice on outside and has lovely piano in common room. Wife hated climbing stairs but I thought it wasn't too bad. Kept hitting my head going to refrigerator because of sloping ceiling. Toilet was too small. Gross half used bottles of shampoo filled cabinet. Bathroom fixtures were dated and cheap. Bedroom needs tv and bed needs access from both sides. Room wasn't designed for its beauty. We probably won't stay there again. Best positive was location

Anniversary trip
My husband and I had to reschedule our anniversary trip to January from an earlier date. We were welcomed by Maggie and felt right at home in the beautiful upstairs suite. The bedroom and sitting room were very comfortable and cozy. Unfortunately, Covid has put Maggie's fabulous breakfasts on hiatus. We enjoyed being close to downtown activities. Local wineries were open and other near by event and activity locations. I highly recommend the Gillespie House for a weekend or a week.

Messages from booking and services went smoothly.
Carpets needed to be vacuumed, furniture could have been dusted. The room was advertised with jaccuzzi tub, yet there was so much rust that none of that was in working order. The faucet on bedroom sink was so loose it had to be held with one hand while trying to turn it on with the other. Fresh flowers were nice, but many other silk flowers were in need of cleaning. Over all this room was comfortable, but needs some TLC!

As advertised..
The pictures in the listing were accurate. However, pictures do not tell the whole story. The mattress was small and a bit soft. Air temperature control was a thermostat in a public hallway. "Breakfast" was truly minimal...more like a couple of snack bars.

We booked this property for two nights and didn't make it through one restful night. The outside of the property is disgusting, along with the dusty unkempt interior. The roof must have loose pieces because it kept us up all night. The other couple across the hall left after one night too. The bed and toilet alone were disgusting and not to mention the nasty mold tub and shower curtain. I could not go in that bathroom. I wish I could show you photos of the toilet. The breakfast portion of this stay was a Christmas tree little Debbie cake and sugar cereal you eat out of the cup with one fork available! Hahaha! The bed is unexplainable, and I question the cleanliness of the sheets and dingy towels. The sky lights are filthy. It's a good mile walk to the main street center. The homes around it are groomed and well kept. I want my money back for the second night and for this person to be removed as a super host. Pathetic, and this was my birthday trip to Fredericksburg that ended too early!

Cozy Getaway
Location is Great for shopping & eating downtown! Within walking distance if you don’t want to drive! We had a small issue in our room the morning after we arrived. I talked to the property manager and the issue was taken care of immediately while we were out shopping. When we arrived back to our room there was a really sweet note and flowers for us!! Would definitely stay here again!

I want to be objective, but never mean. Owner was kind enough, but property/room is not as clean as it should be. Breakfast could be improved. It was basically box kids cereal and little debbie snacks left in room (with milk). When owner cooks breakfast downstairs, you get strong smells of bacon for example...but you don't get to eat it. Same for the fish that was cooked one evening. I mean no ill will, but there would need to be some changes to have this ranked higher. I do wish the owner all the best.

Great location downtown. Charming old home.
This place has a lot of charm. Wonderful original paintings on every wall. Cozy warm sitting rooms downstairs. Beautifully appointed. Would have liked to enjoy sitting outside in the garden we saw in the photos, but the garden had been neglected; leaves piled up and sitting areas unappealing. Maybe a temporary issues because some exterior work was being done on the building. Also the couch in the living room (of the unit East) not as comfy and large as in the photos, but adequate and stylish.

Quaint and homey
Needed a place to stay to experience the town. Didn’t spend a lot of time in the room. Not the newest, most updated space, but is clean, has character and is still inviting (and is priced as such). Close to downtown, but was a little far to walk so we would still drive and then walk the “strip.” In a world where almost everything is always new and perfect, the quaint authenticity was welcomed.

Fredericksburg Gillespie House-
The property was dirty, dated, dingy and looked nothing like that presented on VRBO. My fiancee and I arrived and were in disbelief that this was the same place we had booked online. After a short (20 minute stay), we decided to return home. Tried calling VRBO to discuss our issues but could not get any refund. I do not recommend that you stay here.
