Dar Kamal Chaoui is a fantastic opportunity to get away from the main tourist trail in Morocco and see an authentic town not far from Fez. Kamal is a brilliant communicator in English and French, and after a long career in Europe he is passionate about showing visitors a real Moroccan community and improving the lives of the local people. The guesthouse is beautifully decorated with local crafts, and you can relax with the family, but also be alone if you want to be. I went with Kamal on a challenging but incredible hike over the Kandar mountains behind Bhalil. Thank you Kamal!
Bhalil is only a small town, so make sure to check with Kamal how to get there. It's best to ask him to pick you up from Fez as if you're new to Morocco and don't speak Darija, you may have difficulty getting there. Also, be aware credit cards are not commonly used in Morocco so be ready to have cash (there's an ATM nearby if you need it).

We lived one of the best experiences ever with Kamal and Jalila
We had a delicious dinner, the house is wonderful and Bhalil is magical
We had dinner together and laughed a lot!
We hope to see them again very soon
And we can't wait to visit Bhalil again to do more of the fantastic tours and excursions with Kamal

I found this village and this B&B from a Youtuber video and it exceeded my expectation. Kamal and his wife Jalila gave us an thorough introduction about culture, history and customs about this region. Jalila's cooking is one of the best meal I ever had in Morocco. We shared the guest house with a few very interesting guests. Highly recommended if you decided to experience the not so "touristy" side of Morocco.

The facilities are clean, neat, pleasand with very nice artwork. Kamal and his wife Jalili are wonderful host. The food was suberb Moroccan cooking. Kamal is passionate about where he lives = the town, the area and his country. To say we learned a lot would be an understatement. We took advantage of the Kamal's tours and his getting us there and to our next stopp. The souk tour was a highlight but the other tours were very rewarding as well. We left feeling we had gotten to know Morocco a whole lot better. Thank you Kamal.
Probably the only thing that was a problem was the need to pay in cash = with tours and dinners it meant several ATM stops = but that was a small thing compared to what we gained.

The home-cooked breakfast was delicious. All prepared from local fresh products. We especially enjoyed the family-style dinner where we shared travel stories with fellow travelers.

Excellent hosts! Kamal and his family are wonderful. I have travelled a great deal around Morocco and have never met a host/guide more knowledgable or passionate about his village/country. The room, meals and tour were top notch. The town of Bhalil is also a unique spot worth a visit.
All was great!

Firstly, the hosts were exceptional and VERY accommodating. My partner was sick the entire time, so we were very bound to our room which put a damper on our plans. They really took care of us and made sure we had what we needed. Kamal even took me to the pharmacy to get medicine. I enjoyed sharing stories with the other guests around meals. Parking was very easy and not too far the house. I loved the decor of traditional art and furniture, which for people who are new to country can give a very authentic experience of a mountain village in Morocco. The food was delicious and freshly prepared. The bed was very comfortable.
The was a plumbing issue in our room—a leaky pipe which created a wet floor most of the time we were there. We tried turning off the value as instructed, but the bucket under the pipe would fill up none the less. As a business owner, I know things happen which are less than ideal for the guest experience. It was just a small annoyance. This was my 6th trip to Morocco, and while the food was very good, I found it to be expensive compared to other places in the country....I would compare it to a five-star restaurant in Casablanca, but it was more a traditional rustic homemade fare that would have been half the price anywhere else in the area. Breakfast was included but it was also light, not the usual Moroccan bountiful breakfast you would find in most places.

A real gem easily accessible from Fez with true Moroccan hospitality. Kamal recommended a fabulous day trip, yes we did have our car but his advice was invaluable. The couscous Jalila made for Friday supper was superb, as was the company at the table with Kamal and two other guests. A truly memorable evening.

We had short but amazing stay, the place has unique feeling and perfectly matches the towns cave atmosphere. Kamal and his wife are magnificant hosts who went out of their way to help us plan rest of our trip and greeted us with one of the best meals we tried in whole Marocco.

Kamal's guesthouse is beautifully furnished and decorated, the food is superb - the best I ate during two weeks in Morocco. Although I only stayed one night, the guesthouse and village would have repaid a longer visit since Kamal is knowledgeable about the area, its history and economy, and offers a far more interesting and unique range of day trips than a typical hotelier. I would particularly recommend him to anyone practically-minded who is interested in learning about, for want of a better expression, "how things work". For instance, we drove out to a lime kiln on a nearby hillside to find out how the traditional lime whitewash is made which coats a number of the local buildings, and we went to watch a joiner at work and discussed local carpentry methods, the different kinds of wood, and so on (especially interesting if you are into woodwork and have already visited the Nejjarine Museum of wooden handicrafts in Fes). The highlight for me, however, was going with Kamal to the sheep souq at Guigou in the Middle Atlas - this really was a fantastic experience and even though, in theory, I could have rented a car and gone there by myself, I would have missed out on a ton of information from Kamal, translated conversations with the Berber shepherds, and would have had to have driven through the mountains in the middle of the night in order to arrive at the souq in time. A splendid experience, and also a great place to buy things at dramatically lower prices than what one would pay in the city.

Simple and authentic place. Very clean. The place has a lovely terrace that views the small village, perfect for morning coffee. The rooms are very nicely decorated & the beds are so comfortable. Our hosts Kamal & Jalila are very welcoming couples. Plus the food cooked by Jalila was delicious. There is not much to see in the village itself unless you are looking for a quiet getaway from the busy cities and nice interaction with the locals. The inhabitant of the village are very friendly.

What a unique guesthouse, owner, staff and village. We were taken into the heart of a fascinating “family,” made to feel 1000 percent welcome. This was an entirely wonderful and unique experience.
What was there NOT to like? Absolutely nothing.

We cannot recommend enough this place and it’s amazing hosts. Kamal was not on site but Naima and Jamila (sorry if I mispelled) were absolutely wonderful. we felt immediately at home and enjoyed celebrating Ftour with them and their guests in the evening . Naima is an amazing cook and the breakfast was the best one we had! The decoration, design, the roof terrace, the village are worth stopping by.
The dinner is a little pricey, although excellent.

Clean place, catered for travellers, owner speaks multiple languages.
We have been travelling for over 3 months all over Morocco, and this riad definitely takes the first place in overcharging with regards to what you get in return. We have stayed in various small towns and villages all over the country, in places that were more comfortable and spacious, and never had to spend that much. Moreover, it seems that the landlord does not stop ar that. The prices he charges for taking you on local trips are preposterous. We planned on staying 2 nights and decided to leave after one. Also, make sure if you reserve through booking, that you are not overcharged by the landlord in the conversion rate from Euro to Dirham.
It could have been a nice experience, Bhalil is a wonderful place. We also understand that the hotel owners were hit hard by Covid, but we definitely felt we were taken advantage of, and that is not very nice.

Jalila and Naima were extremely welcoming, and Naima's cooking was delicious. Kamal's home is very comfortable and the rooms are decorated very traditionally which adds to the character of the property. Breakfast was served on the roof terrace which had beautiful views of Bhalil.
