Location
Toilet leaked everywhere and rather than fix it, they simply put down towels. Awful to use as would get wet feet from the leaking water.

Beautiful and tranquil property in a perfect location on the beach. Impeccable service, good food. the perfect end to our trip in Sri Lanka
We were the only guests staying at the time so it meant we were outnumbered by the staff many times over. Not their fault but it was something that took some getting used to!

Amazing stay like a villa as all rooms looks onto garden so no private balcony
Not a private balcony but no problem for us

The food was of a very high standard; delicious and beautifully presented. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They really went out of their way to ensure their guests were having a great holiday. A very calm and luxurious ambience.
The booking.com web site is misleading. The sea view room has no tea or coffee maker, minibar, electric kettle.
The plugs were all subcontinental type D. Only one adaptor was available, but they are easily purchased in Tangalle.

the property is beautiful. We had the room with plunge pool which I would strongly recommend as being the better of the rooms.
Breakfast menu would benefit with changing occasionally. However, staff were happy to take non-standard orders.

Beautiful located. Food was very good and as well the service during the meals.
Wine assortment very limited, menu was repeated first and fourth day was the same. Not really a problem I want to mention it.

Food was lovely but pricey. Disappointed with the pizza - seemed like a frozen product with some basil leaves added. Couldn’t fault anything else though
Weird that all staff were still wearing masks post covid. Made communication difficult. Obciously this would appeal to some travellers though

Service was fantastic. Food was excellent. Staff were very attentive and friendly, made us feel really welcome. Faultless.

Amazing rooms, service and food. felt very relaxing and quiet.
There are nicer beaches but this one was very quiet. The internet wasn't great but I think that was more due to power outages rather than the space itself.

the property was beautiful. rooms are immaculately finished, it feels so quiet - almost like your own villa. the setting right on the beach is hard to beat and very quiet compared to other bays in tangalle. the staff are wonderful. they’re so determined to make your stay as comfortable as they can. they went above and beyond for us and we will not forget it
nothing negative to say

We booked a room by looking at the pictures of Taru Villas Maewella listed on Booking.com. But on reaching, we were given a room in a different property - The Tangalle Social. We realised that there are 2 different, neighbouring properties - Tangalle Social and Taru Villas Maewella. The Tangalle Social was entirely different from the pictures uploaded on booking.com, based on which we had booked. They showed the properties as one whereas they were entirely separate - different pool, lounge, eating etc. and a wall separating.
We confronted the hotel staff - they said they have done nothing wrong. They refused to understand and admit that they misled by depicting the two different properties as one. They kept insisting that they were providing us with a room with a sea view which we had booked. But when one is booking a hotel, it is not just the room but the hotel environment, pool, etc is also important and where we were placed was not what we had booked. The hotel also refused to give us a refund because of the misleading information that they had provided about the hotel surroundings on booking.com.
We were left with no choice but to pay a much, much higher rate to be in the property that we had seen on booking.com (Taru Villas Maewella) and that we were led to believe that we had booked.
On top of this, they charged the entire amount on my card, one week before we checked in and when we asked for the refund they refused. This is despite the fact that on booking.com they said they would only charge a prepayment of 50%, and that the rest could be paid at the property in the local currency.
The hotel management was entirely misleading and action needs to be taken against them for adding misleading hotel information to booking.com. We have been using booking.com for years and no where else have we ever experienced a hotel allocating rooms to guests in another hotel from the one for which they have uploaded photographs.

Charming place away from people’s eyes. You can enjoy the silence and feel royal.
There was some problem to order wine and Prosecco as we finished all stock. :-).

The property is located far from the main on a secluded beach that has a handful of other small lodgings on it and a bunch of fishing boats. The beach is clean and good for swimming. The property itself is stunning. It has a beautiful garden, a lovely swimming pool and a peaceful ambiance. The staff were friendly and attentive.
Nothing.

Taru Villas was truly impressive from the outset. The setting is a beautiful colonial style villa located on a secluded stretch of beach that feels private. Our room and bathroom were beautifully appointed and decorated - the most lovely room of our trip and definitely 5-star standard. The staff were attentive and accommodating during our stay. I cannot say enough about the food - it was outstanding and the best rice and curry we had in Sri Lanka.
Unfortunately our stay was during the evolving coronavirus pandemic. Saying that the hotel managed to maintain the peace and tranquility, and were incredibly helpful when we were trying to reschedule our flights home. It was our honeymoon trip, but we plan to try again next year and will definitely be returning to Taru Villas.
Wish we could have stayed longer!

The perfect destination on the South coast of Sri Lanka. An idyllic colonial villa with a nice garden and exclusive beach area that makes it the ideal place for couples. The staff member that looked after us was incredibly helpful and accommodating, and really worked out just what we were looking for. The food was amazing, particularly the prawn and black pork curries.
The ONE thing that was less than ideal was that we were not told you have to provide notice the night before for the Sri Lankan breakfast. If we hadn’t read the small leaflet in our room and realised then we would have missed out on the delicious local meal. Luckily we did and it was great!

The property was just amazing. If you can, take the “master bedroom”. Its size, furnishing, style, the porch and the view are all breathtaking.
Great, attentive service (all the staff included). They were friendly, kind, helpful, made our room sparkling clean and beautiful every day.
Breakfast is super good, rest of the food is OK as well.
Quiet, basically private beach with pristine ocean, soft sand and sunshine.
Stayed 4 nights, definitely a 10/10 hotel experience.
To support longer stays better, a bit more variety of local cuisine and vegetarian options would be appreciated for the dinner menu.
The AC in the master bedroom could use an upgrade, getting a bit noisy.

This hotel is simply in a league of its own. The staff are attentive without being too pushy. They are friendly and professional and have clearly received a high level of training. The whole hotel oozed peace and tranquility. The decor incredible. The setting right on the beach enviable. The food was simply delicious and very reasonably priced. If you are lucky enough to stay at Taru Villas, Mawella, I would highly recommend the Eggs Benedict for breakfast. The coffee served here is flavoursome and hot, the first decent cup of coffee I had enjoyed in 12 days since arriving in Sri Lanka. The coffee is served to you, free of charge, on request rather than having tea and coffee making facilities in your room. To be able to have dinner and breakfast on your own private patio, looking out towards the sea was surreal. I can only use positive superlatives to describe how awesome Taru Villas is. It was my birthday during our stay and the staff kindly presented me with a birthday cake and sang happy birthday. A wonderful and unexpected surprise. A massive thank you to all the staff for making our stay so memorable. It felt like we had found paradise. My only regret is that we hadn't booked to stay longer. We will definitely return.
Nothing. It's difficult to improve on perfection.
