The staff were lovely, so helpful and welcoming. The kitchen(s) were well equipped, really cool views of Rio and Vidigal. Comfy sofas, TV, soundsystem, hammock etc :) visited by some tiny monkeys which we fed banana to which was so sweet!! Behind the hostel is a football pitch where locals play and there's an area when you can watch if you like, was wet when we were there so didn't see any unfortunately but definitely cool to do. Up a steep hill but you can get taxis if you don't like the walk. (It only takes ten minutes to walk the hill to the hostel from bottom of Vidigal) The area is cool, really nice to see parts of Rio that are less visited, with that in mind though it's not built for tourists and is further away from touristy stuff. But we really loved it. You can get Ubers from the bottom of Vidigal, you just need to walk down the hill which takes ten mins, but they are really cheap compared to taxis so it's worth it.

The duvet smelled like damp

Staff was very friendly, cooked me a meal, recommended events, etc. Views of the ocean were great. In general experience of living in a favela is interesting :)

Location is very hard to get, uber does not come up the favela. Also a big staircase to reach the hostel-hard with backpacks. Inside the rooms there's a humidity smell.

It was a wonderful experience staying in hostel Sol e Mar. The staff was really nice and ready to give us all the tips about Rio and the favelas of Vidigal. A welcoming atmosphere. One of the best part was weaking up with a stunning view of the sea. A good way to see and live another part of the Brazilian culture. It was a pity leaving this hostel and the amazing people we met there. Highly recommended! P.s: don't get afraid about the area, it is safe:)
