Do not stay here if you want to get a good night sleep, it is very noisy with the birds basically screaming in your ears all night long (imagine a scene from Predator). The house is also very old and has a very bad smell that is like old house/urine smell in all bedrooms which kept me up all night. There are no blinds on the windows, just sheer curtains so the light from torches is shining in your face. The bathroom in the basement is very strange too, we were scared to go in there. No one in our family was able to fall asleep there so we left after one night. Not sure where the great reviews are coming from, but if you are used to modern comforts, then go elsewhere.

Great house and very close to downtown Hilo

Wonderful property. Three spacious bedrooms, with plenty of closet space. Two bathrooms with all the amenities. The basement bathroom, in particular, can function almost like a sauna after a day of exploring. Well stocked kitchen. My brother and his partner made an excellent meal - macadamia nut encrusted ono - without any trouble at all. Aesthetically, this property cannot be beat. Plantation era architecture, with hardwood floors and tons of built-ins, adorned with artifacts collected by the owners. And the grounds are amazing. Lush tropical plants in every corner. We spent several mornings sitting under the small garden gazebo listening to birds and watching the local fauna, including wild pigs and a mongoose. Also, there is a wonderful veranda to while away the evenings. Finally, this is a great lication for walking dowtown. The Friday Night Market and Saturday Farmer's Market market are within 15 minutes, as are countless restaurants. A few restaurants necessitate a drive (I recommend Kenichi's) but for the most part you won't need your car to eat or shop. If you twant your rental property to be more than just the place where you hang your hat, this is the place for you.
Now for two hints: 1. Have bug spray. The house is well screened, but there are mosquitos in the garden, and you will want to enjoy it. 2. There is adequate snorkeling gear for a brief excursion to the beach. But if you want to make snorkeling a major part your trip, rent some from Hilo Ocean Adventures.

My family and I had a wonderful stay in this house. It was well-equipped with everything we needed for a weeklong stay in the Hilo area. We particularly appreciated the cooler, snorkel gear, and well-stocked kitchen. The lack of air conditioning was not a problem at all, as the whole-house fan and additional fans that were delivered during our stay helped keep the house very comfortable. Kevin was a wonderful host and very responsive. We would definitely recommend this house!

Quiet neighborhood, great home base convenient for walking into town or for exploring further afield. Extra touches of flowers, coffee, etc. were especially appreciated. We also enjoyed the eclectic collection of interesting objects/ art throughout the house. Impressive backyard lychee tree and associated wildlife!

My family and I came to Hilo so I could run the Big Island International (1/2) Marathon. The house was a quick drive to the start/finish. We loved being able to walk downtown (past a beautiful waterfall), especially since parking can sometimes be hard to find. We also loved having so much space to spread out, the peaceful setting, the juicy tangerines from the front yard, the screened in lanai, nice easy parking, great laundry/drying facilities, and a big well-stocked kitchen - we ate most of our meals at the house. Based on a few past reviews we weren’t sure about the downstairs shower but everyone actually preferred it!
Kevin was very quick to respond and very helpful. We especially appreciated being able to leave our luggage for several hours after we checked out. This is a great house/yard/location and we’d love to return.

The home is very clean and very comfortable! The antique furniture is beautiful. The property is beautifully landscaped with amazing flowering plants and fruit trees. The owner was very attentive and left a bowl of tangerines and starfruit from his yard out for us. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

We used all of the space, for the five of us, the kitchen was perfect for meal prep, The outdoor lanai for happy hours and the dinning room for thanksgiving dinner was just right, Avery small thing that would have been nice is a table cloth , but no big deal

This was my families second stay in this beautiful Hilo home. I used to live in Hilo and this is my go to house when I come back to visit. The house is beautifully decorated and is stocked with everything you could possibly need. The kitchen is the best stocked kitchen of any vacation rental I’ve ever stayed in. They went well beyond the basic necessities, which I appreciate. The yard is gorgeously landscaped and even has a distant view of the ocean from the back porch (new since our last stay). If I ever had the chance to buy this house I would seriously contemplate it. I absolutely love it! It’s classic Hilo. Also of note is that it’s located within walking distance to downtown but feels like your nowhere near town. Quiet neighborhood.

My friends and I stayed in Kevin's home and we loved it. It was beautifully decorated with extra ammenities and well stocked. We were very comfortable and slept well. It was above and beyond our expectations. The owner clearly cares about his guests. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us. We felt like we were in paradise!

The best house in Hilo
We loved everything about it. It was the perfect configuration for us, had all the amenities we needed and wanted, was close to town in a great spot. And it is decorated beautifully. We are college art teachers and we loved everything from the bed covers to the garden to the decorative items in the cases in the house. Just the best!

Perfect Stay in Hilo
We had the best time staying here with our family. The home is very charming and was spotless. I've never seen a kitchen or bathroom as well stocked as we did here. We even enjoyed some of the snorkel gear we found. There were a few friendly lizards in and around the house, but nothing that bothered us. We really loved the sound of the frogs at night. It's also a great location to explore Hilo, Volcano National Park, and anything on the east side of the island. We hope to return again.

Quiet oasis with great access to downtown Hilo, close to waterfalls and drive to Volcanos
This is a beautiful, old, quiet neighborhood property. The garden has some spectacular plantings, the screened in porch is a delight. Kevin was so very kind, helpful and responsive during the entire process. The kitchen is new, both kitchen and bathrooms were very well stocked, a new washer and dryer and very comfortable beds. Thank you so much for providing this home. Mahalo.

Wonderful
This is a charming house, well decorated and equipped. The kitchen has all the pots, pan, dishes, mixer, blender, coffee pots…..everything you could want in a kitchen plus it is large!
The bedrooms are very comfortable . Plenty of closet space and drawers. The ceiling fans are very helpful for sleeping in this warm climate.
This house is with in walking distance to downtown Hilo. It’s very convenient to restaurants, grocery store, farmers market and gift shopping. Lots of interesting shops.
Kevin is a very responsive host. The dishwasher broke while we were staying here and he had it replaced within a couple of days! We also had a surprise box of fruit.
I would whole heartedly recommend this home for a stay in Hilo. We definitely will plan a return stay here.

Comfortable, vintage house, with great location in Hilo
We loved the vintage style, tasteful decor, quiet neighborhood, and easy walking distance of downtown Hilo. The lovely landscaped yard had a wide array of tropical plants and flowers. Recently remodeled, well equipped kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our own meals. Kevin was very kind and responsive to any of our questions. We highly recommend this property to anyone wishing to experience Hilo and the surrounding area. We're already planning a return visit.

Charming & well-equipped home in great location!
My family of four (12 year old and 8 year old) had a wonderful time in Kevin's home. It was charming, well-equipped, spacious, and comfortable. I was smitten by the character of the home which seamlessly blended original charm with modern conveniences. My daughter fell in love with "her bedroom" and came home intent to recreate it. The kitchen was indeed incredibly well-equipped with sharp knives (to my husband's delight) and thoughtful amenities. The beds were comfortable. The linens were high quality. The outdoor space and screened in porch was lovely. We shared many dinners outside and made use of the grill. The location is fantastic...tucked just on the outskirts of Hilo town, so peaceful, yet a quick walk to the bay, to parks, to the HIlo farmer's market, to shops and restaurants. And, within a 20 minute drive of Akaka Falls and the botanical gardens. We were so smitten with the home, we reached out to Kevin to extend our stay. The home was wonderful and the host was friendly, helpful, and accommodating. We would absolutely stay here again, and will forever more refer to it as "our" Hilo home!

Tropical Paradise
What an awesome property! Loved our trip to the Big Island. Was in a great location to explore the Hilo area and Volcanoes NP. Although we saw and experienced some incredible things, I think my absolute most favorite memory is waking up just before sunrise and sitting in the room that overlooks the tropical back yard. So peaceful and invigorating. I could have sat there all day with the windows open listening to the rain landing on the metal roof while looking out at the colors in that yard.

Amazing house & location
This is one of those vacation homes that exceeds expectations. We had four adults and two small children and were quite comfortable. Plenty of space to relax. The outdoor space is a true highlight with fresh fruit available for the pickings and all the charm of a tropical garden. The house is easily walkable to downtown Hilo so the location is perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Only negative comment is that the stairway to the basement isn’t safe for kids so we felt we had to constantly make sure the door was secure so they couldn’t open it and fall down.

Excellent choice for Hilo vacation
This is a beautiful home on a large, lush property. It is close enough to town that you can easily walk in. Everything is very well kept up, the beds and couch are actually really comfortable, the kitchen is totally stocked with anything you could want and then some extra treats. The owner obviously has a flair for decorating as there are lots of fun art pieces and interesting furniture and accents to look at. If you need to watch TV while on vacation, there is a huge one in the master bedroom with every imaginable movie and sports channel. One thing you should be aware of that we initially thought would bother us but then did not at all was that there is no central air conditioning. Instead, there is a big attic fan that sucks air just fine through the house. It gives a nice warm breeze in the house during the day and we actually had to turn it off at night because we would have been too cool otherwise. This felt like a luxurious tropical retreat to us while staying in Hilo and we highly recommend it.

Well taken care of home
Perfect place for my family. Lots of different gathering spaces so we didn’t feel crowded. Very well maintained older home. Lots of extra care was taken in the little details. Well stocked with more than we needed. Didn’t feel like we were in a vacation rental. Felt more like visiting family.

Both the interior and exterior of the home were picture perfect. The house was a unique chance to relax to the sounds of nature and feeling of remoteness, yet be a short walk to the downtown.
