About this house rental
Hurricane Helene impacted our house very little. However, we had over 50 trees downed, some very large. Half of our driveway into the property slid down the mountain. We have cleaned up the trees and reconstructed the driveway. We are ready for renters! We even purchased a Starlink system so now we have internet and TV streaming via Roku (on one of the TVs). The hot tub is ready too!
Right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of America's most beautiful scenic routes is your own private mountain getaway. Enjoy the spectacular view of the Blue Ridge mountains while relaxing in the 6 person hot tub on the deck (open year-round).
Tucked away in your own hollow of 10 acres, there is cleared land for badminton, volleyball, croquet, barbecue and hiking. And in the winter months, hot tubbing and riding a tube or sled down a hill in the snow. Of course there is nearby skiing (Banner Elk).
Fine dining is less than 1 mile away. The Biltmore House, America's premier castle is 40 minutes away in Asheville, NC. Linville Caverns are 30 minutes away via the Parkway. 2 hour drive from Charlotte and 40 minutes from Boone. Golfing and hiking easily accessible.
We call our mountain getaway in Little Switzerland the 'Rieke Retreat'. It has been in the family since 1970. It used to be an old homestead for the 'McKinney family' starting in the 1920's.
What is 'LSD'? 'LSD' means Little Switzerland Downtown. It is only nine-tenths of a mile from our house. In the non-winter months, the New Book Exchange is the highlight. Here you can relax on a sofa in front of a big fireplace, sip coffee or wine and get lost in the book of your choice (I forgot the classical music in the background). Hungry? Go next door to the Little Switzerland Café and have the best Trout BLT in the world followed by apple pie and ice cream! Need a bottle of wine and some cheese for later on? Go through the doors to the Little Switzerland General store and they have quite a selection. You have entered another world. And you are not dreaming.
In the non-winter months, Grassy Creek Golf course is a public course only 10 minutes away in Spruce Pine. Mount Mitchell Golf Course is about 20 minutes away and is under the largest mountain East of the Mississippi River - Mt. Mitchell. It is well-established and famous for its layout and views.
In the winter months (Dec., Jan., Feb., March) there is great North Carolina skiing only 40 minutes away. Main resorts are Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain and others near Blowing Rock and Banner Elk. Many people stay at our house to rest and hot tub after a long day day of skiing nearby. Keep in mind we are at 3500 elevation and it snows often. (Our driveway is not steep, don't worry).
Other Activities: Gem Mining
In the summer, the best organized whitewater rafting which is closest to the Rieke Retreat is the Nolichucky River about 45 minutes from the house in Erwin, Tennessee. Little Switzerland is the perfect place to train for bicycling. You can start at the Little Switzerland entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway and try to 'Assault on Mt. Mitchell' which is about 33 miles.

Stunning mountain views, quiet and private retreat with cozy cabins, hot tubs, and beautiful surroundings. Perfect for relaxation and ideal for exploring the area.

This place was WAY more wonderful than I had even hoped it would be. The home is large and beautifully decorated with very thoughtful games and entertainment (badminten and horsehoes among other things) but by far the best part was the view, and the hot tub. Waking up to watch the sun rise over Table Rock will soaking in the bubbly hot tub was just the most wonderful thing I've done in ages. The little town nearby is adorable, and the food at the restaurant is SO good, plus the people there are very friendly. We definitely want to return to this place!

Enjoyed my stay, loved the hot tub.

This was a nice cabin and very secluded. Be sure you realize that because you are in the mountains it takes you time to get anywhere. The views was spectacular!

Incredible views- charming cabin with so many delightful touches! Very well equipped.
Only downside, which actually caused us problems, is the driveway to the cabin is quite a challenge. Rough steep road with large speed bumps.... a large vehicle can do it and is worth going because of the location. Small cars may not be able to get there.

Very spacious, homely and comfortable. Felt as if you were visiting a home, which was lovely. The deck was fantastic and loved their art and books. We didn't use the hot tub as it was pretty warm but would have been great at a different time of year. Google maps took us straight there but lots of turns to get under Parkway. Only one tiny caution, was that the car hire company gave us a very low slung car( a Sonata) and the gravel path has speed bumps . We scraped over all 5 when the car was fully loaded which was a bit difficult. Unloaded and with one walking, we just made it over the bumps and honestly most cars would have gone over fine

We love this place. It's so nice just to relax around the cabin, but it's also central to lots of hiking, eating and shopping and other nearby towns.

This was such a fantastic stay for us! We did arrive at night which made for a bit of an experience driving to the house, but we arrived easy enough with the detailed instructions. The house was well prepared and we had no problems keeping warm. The views are absolutely stunning! We got to experience rain, snow, and sunshine and had lots of fun running around the yard. Would love to come back and see it all in the summertime. Thanks for a great trip!

Loved our stay at Reike Retreat. Secluded and serene. Perfect spot for a peaceful getaway. You cannot beat the view of the mountains at any time of day.

The cabin is perfectly located. Getting there is a little difficult but if you follow the landord's directions there shouldn't be any problem finding the cabin (Google Map sent us to another place). There is a huge fresh market and a Starbucks about 15 minutes from the cabin.
The view of the deck is exactly what you see in the photos. The landscape is beautiful. On the last day of our stay we ran out of water in the cabin, it seems there was a breakdown. Other than that the experience was perfect. Highly recommend.

Beautiful views, relaxing cabin, my wife and I had a wonderful stay.

My boyfriend and I just stayed here for the weekend and absolutely loved it! The views were incredible, very private, the home was beautiful and very warm and cozy. Comfy beds and good water pressure too. If you stay here, you HAVE to try the Mexican place by the Walmart and definitely try the salsa there, it’s fantastic! Overall, this is the perfect mountain getaway.

We really like bringing our family to this property. There’s plenty of room for the kids to play around snd the view is amazing.

We had a great weekend here celebrating our one year anniversary. Had a hard time opening the hot tub but Peter called me immediately to walk me through it. Great view on the deck, loved being secluded and away from everyone for a while.

The property is very isolated, which is exactly what we were looking for. What I wasn’t counting on or crickets in the bathrooms. In the bathtub were crickets and in the middle of the night while you’re using the toilet, crickets jumping around, and only two wash clothes per bathroom, multiple towels but no wash clothes. All In all it was pretty nice but the dining room’s air conditioner was held up by a stool that was bolted to the deck outside, The deck also felt a little spongy around the hot tub, so we opted to not use that. Old wiring, a lot of area to use your chargers but some of the stuff really need it updated as far as wiring goes.
The owner gives you a 20 page book on his rules and what is expected of you and things to do and see around the place which was nice , I could’ve done without the book of rules, most houses have standard roles, and that’s how it goes, but it was so detailed, it read like a novel. However beautiful the view was from this house, if I ever come back to this area, I will probably look elsewhere.

Property was great. Other reviews were correct, road was treacherous getting to house (glad we did not try it in the dark. View was awesome, house was very nice for an older dwelling. Owners must have had issues with people in the past hence the huge amount of rules, reasonable people will have no issues. Really great experience for my family & I.

Comfortable rustic cabin with stunning view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Location near little Switzerland was ideal. Able to get groceries in Spruce Pine a few miles away. GPS on phones saved our bacon! Privacy was so nice. Loved our time there.

My partner and I were taking a 3-day weekend to "get away". We had a lovely stay, enjoying the hot tub, views, and natural surroundings. The quiet and solitude were just what we needed. The cabin is unique and cozy. We would love to come back again in the future.

House had everything our crew of 4 needed to relax and getaway. The hot tub & view was perfect after hiking in the blue ridge mountains. Proximity to the parkway was great, we were able to run into Spruce Pine and pickup what we needed for our stay. Only regret is that we didn't have more time here.

Great views, peaceful setting, great house and loved the hot tub. Perfect place to enjoy and relax or hub for local exploration. We loved it.

If you are looking for peace and serenity, this is the place. very quiet, still with lots to do (badminton, bon fire, horseshoes, hot tub etc). Close to anything you might need. Don't let the printed instructions worry you, they are very helpful. I liked all the instructions as there was lots of local information included also. Plenty of room, no musty, old odor. Clean, quiet, beautiful vistas. Just a wonderful place! I can see how driving there in the dark the first time would be a little scary, so try to get there during daylight hours. And then enjoy!

Very good weekend and great location. Little difficult locating, so make sure to read the directions and best to arrive while you still have daylight but once there, the seclusion and location more than make up for any difficulty in getting there.

We were pleasantly surprised when entered the property, it was very nice and cozy, it had everything we needed for our stay. The view was amazing, and the short communications I had with the owner were timely and helpful. Definitely pay close attention to the given instructions and there should be no issues. We would absolutely love to come back next year.

Everything is just as expected but the view was magical. The hot tub allowed for relaxing stargazing after a long hike to the falls. We look forward to staying again!

Tranquil, unique property. Beautiful views and great location!

The owners took great care in making sure there were plenty of supplies for everything--from towels to extra lightbulbs.
I can't imagine getting to the property in winter because it's such a long, narrow mountain road--but we did not have that problem.
I do think the owner's tone in response to online renter concerns could be less contemptuous. That was off-putting to me. The owner gave good directions about how to locate the property, and we did locate it fine, but the area could easily be confusing to people who have never been there, and one does not have to be an idiot to get confused or lost around there. Some of the instructions in the 19-pages of rules and guidelines had that same kind of hostile tone.
But we had a nice stay: the view is great, beautiful area.
Thank you.

Dust cobwebs and stains on things.
Bugs and worms in bath tub
NO HOT WATER. This place is a joke and falsely advertised. I will never rent with Vrbo again

Angry Owner, Misrepresented Property Condition
Owner did not disclose broken HotTub, Clothes Dryer, Urine stains in bed, spoiled food in Fridge or necessity to turn on Hot water. Owner is angry, spiteful, dishonest and is a poor communicator

Beautiful views
The property was as listed. Beautiful views, cozy environment. It was quiet and very private. The multiple pages of instructions, directions and rules seemed a bit overwhelming and not fully understandable. The owner seemed to be a bit frustrated with me that I could not find the directions for the hot tub supplies and did not see that the hot water tank needed to be turned on resulting in some cold showers. Overall, it was a pleasant enough experience.

Weekend getaway
This would've been an absolutely perfect stay had I brought a can of Lysol, new surroundings really triggered my allergies. Everything else about it was perfect; from the views/location, to the hot tub, to the weather. I would definitely stay here again.
