About this vacation rental
Minimum 31 day stay required. Hale Ka Nani, which means “beautiful house” in Hawaiian, is situated on 3.3 acres in the private, gated community of Kohala Ranch on the beautiful Kohala "Gold" coast. Kohala Ranch is a large 4,000 acre secure/gated “working” ranch, approximately 45 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 75 miles from Hilo. It is the perfect place for enjoying Hawaii Island without the crowds and tourist traffic of the resorts and hotel areas. This spacious 700 square foot guest suite has a kitchen, living/dining room, one bedroom with queen bed, and spacious bathroom with large shower, separate toilet, and twin vessel sinks. The home can accommodate two to four people with the pull out queen-sized wall bed in the living room. Hale Ka Nani is an attached guest suite and has its own private entrance and parking area. This newly-built guest suite was completed in March 2017. Tastefully decorated, and completely self-sufficient, it is a wonderful place for you to bask in the loveliness of Hawaii Island and feel what it is like to actually live on the island.
The spacious 700 square foot lanai has an outdoor eating table for four, gas grill, and comfortable lounge furniture for you to enjoy a mai tai while you watch the sun set in the center of your 180 degree ocean view. Your views include open ranch land, coastline, the islands of Maui, Koolawe, Molokini, and Lanai, and three volcanoes; Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and the often snowcapped Mauna Kea. The famous Kohala Coastline sunsets are an artist’s dream, painting the skies with pink, red, orange, yellow, and blue. On clear evenings you might see the famous "Green Flash" as the sun dips below the horizon or one of the numerous rainbows that arch over the ranch. At night, you can sit out on the lanai and star watch because the Big Island limits “light pollution” for star viewing by the telescopes on top of Mauna Kea.
This one-bedroom unit is one of the best deals on the Big Island. This suite does not have air conditioning, but is equipped with ceiling fans since air conditioning is not needed at this perfect elevation of approximately 1600 feet, making it 7-10 degrees cooler than on the coast. This area is dry and sunny with an average of 357 sunny days and an average of 7 inches of rain per year. The owners live in the attached main house on the property and will respect your privacy, but are close by should their assistance be needed.
Kawaihae Harbor, 15 minutes away, offers multiple dining opportunities including a local Tiki bar, perfect for happy hour or a fresh seafood dinner. There is a fresh fish market, a burger/taco restaurant, and an ice cream shop featuring Hawaii Shaved Ice. You can reserve and depart on a dive, snorkel, sport fishing or whale watch adventure from the harbor. The small, historic sugar plantation towns of Hawi and Kapa'au are approximately 20-35 minutes drive north of us. These are artist communities with great shops and quaint eateries. Look for the photography of Julie Eliason, one of the Hale Ka Nani owners, in the galleries.
At the north end of the highway is the famous Pololu Valley, which you can hike down to enjoy spectacular coastline views and a rugged beach. Waimea town is a short 25 minute drive where you can enjoy local farmers markets, shopping, a micro brewhaus, and several restaurants. Enjoy all of the beauty the Big Island has to offer and after a day of activity and sightseeing, return to relax and reflect at Hale Ka Nani, a perfect way to end the day.
This unit is not appropriate for small children and no pets. Please don't hesitate to contact us, without obligation, for more information.
Please note: Travelers to Hawaii Island must take a state-approved Covid-19 test within 72 hours of arrival. Anyone without a negative test prior to their departure to Hawaii must quarantine at a state-approved hotel for 10 days after their arrival. If the arrival test results are positive or the results are inconclusive, the traveler will be referred to the Hawaii State Department of Health for further handling. I have been wanting to stay at this property for quite some time and this home was certainly worth the wait! The location, the huge ocean/mountain views, the night sky, I could go on and on. Communication with the owners was excellent and frankly, they were two of the best hosts I have ever met.The photos do not lie. This property is clean and there was even a mid-month cleaning included while I was there.
This island is big! So having some of the best beaches right down the road is another benefit to staying in this area.
Another wonderful trip for the books and I look forward to (hopefully!) staying there again. Aloha!

This was a very good unit for two people and the hosts were very responsive and informative. The weather here is a little more moderate than down at sea level and has a great route over to Waimea and Hawi.

We loved staying at Hale Ka Nani. The ohana has everything you need for a perfect holiday. The location is beautiful and peaceful. The kitchen is loaded with everything needed to cook delicious meals with local produce, meats and fish. The view from the lanai showcases Hawaii’s mountains and the Pacific Ocean and spectacular sunsets! We definitely would rate this property 20/10! Loved it!

Book it if you can
This property gives you the feel of the Big Island at its best. The hosts exude the aloha spirit. The apartment is beautifully decorated. The view from the deck includes lots of wild birds as well as rolling hills and the ocean. It is a little bit of a drive to stores and restaurants, but that's a plus if you want to avoid tourist crowds. Thank you Bob and Julie for sharing your piece of Paradise.

Beautiful vacation rental
The rental is a beautiful place to stay. Loved the decor. The location was great. Open country views. Our stay was marred only by the limitations of state and county parks and beaches being closed because of the Corona virus prevention. We'll have to go back someday to really see the island.

Amazing property!
Loved the location! Remote, quiet and beautiful. Perfect for exploring the northern half of the island. The views from unit are outstanding. The unit is comfortably and stylishly decorated. I really appreciated the owners thinking of touches like snorkel gear, coolers and beach towels. I had a perfect week here!

Beautiful Home and Views
My husband and I stayed in this guest house for 4 days/ 5 nights. The home was perfectly clean, organized and well appointed for a lengthy stay. The home is modern and tastefully decorated. It is located in a scenic and quiet neighborhood. The best part of this home is the incredible 180 degree view from the lanai overlooking ranch lands and the Kohala coast. The peaceful and beautiful view added much enjoyment to our time in Hawaii. The owners were friendly, responsive and clearly take great pride in their guest home. I would stay here again and highly recommend it to others looking for beauty, peace and relaxation.

Kohala Ranch Getaway
We really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful and peaceful location. The deck view was spectacular and morning coffee there became our routine. We loved the wildlife in the ranch: wild turkeys and pigs!
The apartment was comfortable, well equipped, and so nicely decorated. We’ve been to the BI many times, but this was our first stay in No. Kohala. Hopefully, not our last. Mahalo to our hosts Bob & Julie.

Big Island serenity!
Bob and Julie have an awesome property that we get to share! This was our first stay in the Kohala Ranch area of the Big Island and we were very pleased!! Listening to the turkeys and the Francolins in the early morning was an unexpected treat. A great property with great owners! Highly recommend.

Amazing place, amazing location
We stayed here at the end of July and absolutely loved it. We could have stayed here all day as the views were so amazing. The water view was obviously incredible but we were taken aback by the beauty of the rolling hills of the ranch. We also loved seeing owls every single day - we would take our camera and go look for them just before sunset every day as that is when they are most active bc they are hunting. The house was updated, clean and well-appointed. We don't have single complaint. The only thing I would would warn others about is that it does get windy at night. If you are a very light sleeper (like me), you might want to bring ear plugs! Would recommend this place without reservation to anyone visiting the Big Island. Hope to go back one day!

Incredible location on Kohala Ranch
Everything about this experience was perfect. The owners Bob and Julie were very easy to communicate with, the location is outstanding, the layout and decor of the guest suite are so well done and the peace and quiet of this beautiful place were so relaxing we will definitely return.

A tranquil guest house with a heavenly view
One of the highlights of our one-week Big Island vacation was staying in this guest house for the first 4 nights. The house was new, clean, and beautifully decorated. The view from the house and the lanai outside was just out of this world - you can see 3 mountain peaks on the left and over 180 degrees of ocean spanning around the house, from 3000 ft high. Bob and Julie were really friendly and made sure we felt comfortable and at home.
The house had anything and everything you would need - we especially appreciated the snorkel fins (in both my size 13 and my wife's size 6) as we're big snorkelers but didn't pack our fins. We were a moderate drive away from the world reknown Hapuna Beach, the town of Waimea (Kamuela) which has wonderful restaurants, and Hawaiian ruins. We also drove a but further to Ponolu'u lookout, Hilo, and Waipio valley during our stay, all with amazing drives. We were always glad to come back to the house after being in the water or out and about all day.
We can't wait to stay here again when we visit the Island, and if we have friends who are looking for places to stay, we're sure to recommend this place!

Spectacular views, warm and inviting
The hospitality of Bob and Julie shines throughout their one bedroom ohana suite unit. It is beautifully appointed with some of Julie's own art work, and every amenity is provided. It is a private, peaceful setting. Nestled at 1700' elevation within Kohala Ranch, it has spectacular views of sunsets, the entire coastline to the airport 40 miles away and of all three major mountains.

Jaw-dropping views!
The 180 degree view from the lanai is spectacular - volcanoes and ocean - as far as you can see. And the slightly cooler temps in the evenings are so pleasant after a day of snorkeling and hiking. Mahalo!

We stayed at the Hale Ka Nani for 11 nights in July and wanted to spend the entire year - we were that comfortable. The guest house has everything you would want or need for 2 or 4 people, and is sparkling clean, bright, beautifully decorated but practical, and you will want to stay on the lanai for all meals because the views are spectacular. Bathroom is very spacious and modern. All directions and island activities, including restaurant menus are detailed. We enjoyed each day. It is the perfect place for ocean views, sunsets, quiet countryside and star gazing, the cute town of Hawi ,and it is also the perfect place for a quick 15 minute drive to the best beaches and snorkeling, Waimea for shopping, Kona or the Belt Road to the Hamakua Coast and Hilo. Julie and Bob really know the island, will make you feel very welcome and are available for any questions but the guest house is totally private and separate. It is a beautiful place. We will definitely come back!

We enjoyed our two week stay at Hale Ka Nani. The views from the deck are stunning! The temperature is perfect at this elevation (1,800 feet). We enjoyed our daily morning walks around the neighborhood where we saw lots of interesting wildlife and met some really great people. On a still night, the silence is something quite unique and special. If you come from an urban area, chances are you probably have never experienced something like this before in your life! On a moonless night, be prepared for absolute darkness, and when the skies are clear, the stars are magical.
This guest house is almost brand new and spotlessly clean! The overall size of this place is perfect for two adults. Because of the layout and generous size of the rooms, this place would be very comfortable for a longer stay!
Thank you Bob and Julie for sharing your piece of paradise with us! We look forward to meeting you when we are back on island!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to actually live in Hawaii? Alas, it is not to be for me - and yet- my husband and I recently spent a month in the Hale Ka Nani ohana on Kohala Ranch, island of Hawaii, and that is as near as one can get to actually living in this beautiful island if you aren't able to do so. The ohana is a lovely 3 room self-contained guest house adjacent to, but separate from the owner's main house, with its own entrance, driveway, washer/dryer and furnished lanai, which overlooks the ocean, and the mountains Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai. On a clear day one can see the island of Maui. Sunsets are spectacular. I have seen the legendary "Green Flash" twice since I've been here.
The newly completed unit is beautifully decorated and thoughtfully equipped with everything one would need to make a stay here very comfortable. What a great place for writing a book, reading a novel, unwinding, renewing, and just enjoying all the things Hawaii has to offer.
Mahalo, Hale Ka Nani!

My husband, sister, brother-in-law and I stayed at Hale Ka Nani on our first trip to Hawaii. The views from 1,800 feet above the ocean were fantastic! We could see the volcanoes and the Kohala and Kona coasts from the deck. We loved the rural setting with lots of birds far from the bustle and traffic of the coastal highway. It was only a 15 minute drive to beautiful beaches and other attractions. Our group enjoyed snorkeling, hiking, and bird watching all within a short drive.
The guest house was very comfortable for the four of us. The kitchen was well equipped and the furnishings were beautiful. Julie and Bob were wonderful hosts. They know the island well and can give great advise on things to do. I would definitely recommend this guest house to a friend.
