About this lodge
Note regarding hurricane Helene….in spite of heartbreaking damage seen on tv in Asheville, Cashiers is in good shape. Businesses are open, roads are good. The Mountain House is fully prepared to offer you a wonderful family getaway-no damage, power back, WiFi good to go.
Life is all around us. We need to celebrate it, every day. Hikes are free, so are long walks and views from mountain tops and waterfalls. Dining in & carry out are available at excellent nearby restaurants, or cook the latest NY Times recipe that caught your eye in the Mountain House's well stocked kitchen. Enjoy some quality family time watching a movie or out by the fire pit (we supply the firewood) laughing and making s'mores. Get a good night's sleep on super comfy mattresses in the mountain air. Come see us...the mountains are waiting.
You won't find a better house. Beautiful bones...post and beam architecture...plenty of room for a family or group of friends. If you read the reviews, they tell the story. We've been sharing the house since 2013, and we have developed a devoted clientele who return year after year.
As longtime VRBO fans ourselves, we furnished this house to be the place we always looked for, but rarely found. Mountain rustic...(modern mountain if you will), with designer details, antiques and a refined casual vibe thrown in for a lovely eclectic mix. This craftsman style, genuine post and beam house has gorgeous heart of pine wood and slate floors throughout - no carpet. Whole house Google wifi, HD tvs with cable, Netflix and Amazon streaming.
Not to name drop - ok, maybe just a bit - when actor Josh Brolin and his gorgeous Atlanta bride decided on Cashiers as the place for their 2016 Lonesome Valley wedding, it was quite the event. Matt Damon, La Streisand and many more in attendance. The bride's family chose the Mountain House as their wedding abode, which we took as a real compliment.. our little moment in the spotlight!
So what's so great about the Mountain House? Amazing mattresses and linens, a kitchen with everything you need, not just a bit of it. Down comforters to snuggle in, big soft sofas, tons of tall windows to let in loads of light, surrounded by trees and rhododendrons.
Dog friendly, check... just let us know Fido is coming.
Cleanliness: It is top on our priority list, as it is for most travelers. We have a top notch cleaning team, and you can be assured your vacation getaway is clean, top to bottom.
Convenience: It's also important to us and our guests to be close to the supermarket, hiking, waterfalls, restaurants, and shops. While still secluded and pastoral, the Mountain House is just minutes to all these things.
Detailing: It's here, in every room, not just some of them. And it's just one thing that sets the Mountain House(and its baby sister, the Hobbit House - #655938) apart. All the rooms are unique, with great accents, from the ten foot antique French workbench coffee table in front of the fireplace, to cool art throughout the house.
Family perfect: Aren't most of us looking for the place that can help make the best family memories? Birthdays, anniversaries, reunions, holidays....the occasions that make you realize that time together is the gift that never wears out.
Space for everyone! The great room is perfect for family confabs in front of the soaring 24 foot rock fireplace...great in the winter season or on chilly summer nights(and a second, lovely living area downstairs)...plenty of seating to chat, or watch movies.
Family dining: A huge rustic trestle dining table that seats 10 to 12 easily, anchors the dining room. A large antique buffet against the wall for serving that gourmet dinner. Right by the screened porch is the open porch, where you can dine al fresco with your family and guests at a huge 10 foot table, enjoying the gorgeous summer weather in the mountains.
Cooking: The fully stocked, gourmet kitchen has beautiful soapstone countertops and farmhouse sink, TWO ovens (heaven for the cook), and a Dacor 5-burner gas cooktop...and everything you need to prepare and serve an amazing family meal. Beautiful dishes and serving ware, family size slow cooker, electric kettle, Bonavita coffee maker, blender, Cuisinart pots and pans, spices and cooking basics.
Relaxation: Sure, we all love togetherness (most of the time), but we also need some alone time, right? Try the screened porch, where I promise you'll spend a lot of time. The large daybed swing with tons of pillows and a foam mattress is the best place imaginable for reading or naps...and you may even sleep there one night! There are plenty of getaway spots for quiet moments.
Six bedrooms: Three bedrooms on the main level: 1 king, 2 queens, with 2-1/2 baths (both with heated stone floors). Upstairs are 2 more guest bedrooms (1 queen and 2 twins) that share the hall bath. The 6th bedroom is a king on the lower level, very private, with glass doors and windows onto the back garden with lots of rhododendrons. It also has a full bathroom with heated stone floors and a seating area outside for your morning coffee!!
Laundry: Yep, it happens, even on vacation. But here it's easy...a beautiful (yes, it can be) laundry/mud room just off the kitchen, and a side entrance (great place to unload groceries)...with top of the line front loading washer and dryer, prep sink area just off the kitchen, and a lovely summer herb garden just outside the door.
No TV struggle: A lovely 2nd family room with HDTV is on the lower level, with big windows, built in bookshelves, mini-fridge and sink...and a game room with foosball and ping-pong. Game on!
More s'mores! No problem. Just outside is a boulder firepit with cedar Adirondack chairs perfect for a chilly mountain night and we have long, stainless marshmallow roasters!
Location: The Mountain House is located in a lovely, gated neighborhood just behind the Country Club of Sapphire Valley...a wooded, gentle, level road for walking, biking or driving (not so far out and up hairpin twist roads you think twice about going anywhere). Snow is cleared by the neighborhood assoc. in the winter, as is our driveway.
Activities: Done, and done. The Sapphire Resort facilities with indoor and outdoor pools, winter ski slopes (snow tubing is great fun!), exercise room, playground, two hot tubs and saunas, and massage...literally just down the street, and beautiful Fairfield Lake just down the road with swimming, canoes and paddleboards. You have access for a small daily fee.
Hiking, waterfalls, golf, fishing, shopping...it's all here. We're also very close to several top notch restaurants, including the renowned Canyon Kitchen at Lonesome Valley and The Library Kitchen and Bar, both less than 5 minutes away.
Baby, oh baby: You won't have to pack all your baby gear! We have a wonderful Four Moms Breeze Pack and Play, a Cybex stroller, Phil & Ted's lobster high chair, an exer-saucer and vibrating baby rocker for your convenience.

This roomy and comfortable house was perfect for our group of seven women. Kitchen was well equipped, great gathering places around the kitchen table and in the living room.

We had our children and grandchildren and in-laws stay and we were all blown away not only by the house and all its amenities but also by the beauty and serenity of the surroundings. The owner could not have been more helpful and accommodating! The house was exceptionally well stocked with kitchen and dinning equipment as well as bedding and entertaining items. We felt so fortunate to enjoy such a wonderful house!

This was our second year staying in this house, and it did not disappoint. This year we had an infant, toddler and 6-year old along with 6 adults staying in the house, and it was perfect. There are plenty of room options for our growing family.

Our family loved our stay at the beautiful mountain house in Sapphire. The home was beautifully furnished and had lots of space for our family. We loved the comfortable den and the screened porch was a favorite spot, especially since we had a lot of rain while we were there. But even the rain couldn't dampen our enthusiasm for the area and what it had to offer. The ping-pong and foosball tables were popular with the kids and adults alike. The convenience of the proximity of the house to the Sapphire Valley Resort and its amenities is a plus- there's swimming, tennis, pickleball, golf, putt-putt, and more to do for folks of all ages. We enjoyed our walks through the picturesque neighborhood. The home was stocked with just about everything that we needed for our family - a stroller, a pack and play, high chair, dog beds, baby gates- the list goes on. The kitchen is well-outfitted for family meals at home. Our hosts were very responsive and accommodating. We would absolutely stay there again!

We were an extended family of ten. Five of us were there for 10 days, another five joined us for six days during July 4 week and I stayed on, joined by another couple for the last few days. I also had my miniature poodle with me the entire time. The spacious layout, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms allowed everyone space to enjoy privacy when needed. The living room & game room furniture were all very comfortable. The beds were all reported to be excellent. The extra refrigerator and washer/dryer in the garage provided all the storage and laundry access our large group could desire. The kitchen was very well appointed with everything we needed. Internet was consistent and worked throughout the house.
There are multiple gathering areas, the screened porch, the deck, the firepit and the large back yard provided space for games, meals and just relaxing. We took advantage of the supply of firewood to roast marshmallows and enjoy the cool evenings. We were able to comfortably host friends for cocktails before July 4 fireworks, as the ten children enjoyed the game room and yard, the 16 adults were able to supervise from the deck & porch.
My dog, grandkids, & I enjoyed frequent walks and bike riding on the nearby, very quiet streets with only minimal hills. We even spotted a bear on two occasions. So, everyone agreed it was a perfect visit to the mountains.

This charming home is set in an ideal location in the beautiful Sapphire Valley Country Club. The natural light in the house welcomes the beauty of the outdoors in and makes the most charming atmosphere. Would highly recommend this lovely home.

Nicely decorated and cozy!!! The bedrooms all have comfortable mattresses and with so many little touches from antiques to NC charm. 4 full baths! The family room is set up to be conversational and we lit the fire almost every night. The dining table inside and outside allowed for laughter and chit chat long after dinner was done. The screened porch is a mini heaven after a long hike or in the morning w a cup of coffee. Kitchen fully stocked and with nice dishes! So if you are entertaining- you will find platters and pitchers. This place was perfect for our women’s retreat. The communication process is excellent as well. Highly recommend.

My husband and I planned a long weekend in Cashiers and invited my twin college age boys, one of their friends and two single girlfriends of ours. Everyone had comfortable accommodations and slept like babies! The house is just as pictured. The extra den space downstairs was great for when the college kids had had enough of us. The screened porch was so cozy although the weekend we stayed it was a bit too cool to use. The kitchen had everything a real cook would need to pull together meals for a crowd. I appreciated the policy of leaving behind condiments in the fridge - like hot sauces, salad dressings, mustard, mayo, etc. There were also plenty of Ziplocks, foil, trash bags and spices. The host was very friendly and communicative and let us check out a little late. I highly recommend this property and hope to come back!

This was probably one of my favorite vrbos ever! The house is amazing but the host are even better. They literally thought of everything you could need. Even baby stuff!!! The house is clean but also decorated so cozy and stylish. It really felt like we were at our family vacation house. Traveling with a 1 year old was a breeze. The master has a HUGE close that fit a pack and play comfortably. The location was also great. We were a 5-10 minute drive from everything including some great restaurants and brewery. If you are staying in the Cashiers area…rent this place! We will be back!

The house was even better than we expected! Cozy, clean and filled with all the right amenities. We were all sad to leave. Donna was a great host and the community is lovely. All the Christmas decor was the icing on the cake!

Probably one of the best trips we’ve had in the last 10 years we have been getting together. The property was spectacular. After the first day people quit asking if the house had something and instead just asked where it was located. The house easily accommodated 8 adults, even when the kitchen had multiple chefs working at the same time. But as nice as the property was it still didn’t compare to Donna the owner. Last minute requests were accommodated and offers to arrive early were extended early enough to be taken advantage of. Even though she was out of the country during our stay she made the effort to stay in contact and make sure we didn’t need anything. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful home. We’re already looking for an excuse to return.

Our family of 8 adults and 5 kids under 5 yr. old enjoyed every inch of this beautiful home and yard - plenty of room and so well-equipped. The location was convenient and beautiful. So many happy moments in the comfort of this gracious home! I can’t imagine a more perfect gathering place for our family.

We had the most wonderful stay at The Mountain House! It is absolutely amazing! The house is beautiful and so well equipped. As beautiful as the house is in pictures it’s even more beautiful in person! It really made a special weekend even more special! I hated to leave and would love to go back!

House was perfect for our family! The kitchen is always our gathering spot and this kitchen was fabulous! The fire pit our second favorite spot along with the porch dining table and swing! Each bedroom well done and very comfortable for all family members. Great location and the host kept us well informed of all details! Highly recommend!

This is a FABULOUS house!! EXCELLENT location, beautifully appointed, with the most magnificent wooden beams and ceilings. The Living area is beautiful and oh so comfortable!
Our family (grandkids and adult children), and friends have loved coming to the Mountain House for 5 years, we love it so much!!
Donna is lovely, gracious, and accommodating. She responds immediately if we have a question or problem (we have NEVER had anything major). She has a super, well stocked kitchen where we have enjoyed many meals, a wonderful porch, for chatting and "chilling" in the mornings, noon and evenings.
The bedrooms have excellent mattresses and the decor is rustic with a flair!! The pingpong table downstairs is fun for both kids and adults.
The grounds are beautiful with a lovely butterfly bush outside the kitchen window. Cherokee Trail is WONDERFUL for walking and exploring, either UP hills or not!! I particularly love her yard, as it is safe for kids or us "older " visitors! (no steep driveways or cliffs)!!
I cannot say enough positive things about the" Mountain House" and hope to be there again next year!!

Wonderful stay! Loved the fire pit and the fabulously stocked kitchen. Really enjoyed our long weekend get away!
5.0 / 5.0
The house is beautiful! It was perfect for our 11 guests since it has luxurious accommodations for all, unlike other listings that have a master, maybe a bedroom or two, and then pull-out couches and bunks that allow the owner to claim that it can sleep an army of people. Every room is immaculate, on theme, and inviting. The attention to detail in how the house was constructed as well as the decorations and furniture is on point. Several great gathering spaces including the main living room, open deck area and screened in porch. That screened in porch was so nice that it inspired us to include one of our own in our home addition plans.

The house is exactly as advertised! There is room for all and plenty to keep the little kids and “big kids” occupied. WIFI is great but cell service is pretty non existent all around the area, so if you will need to make calls for any reason keep that in mind. No issues with WIFI at the house. Great location and access to all kinds of activities with the amenity cards (pool, hot tub, zip line, mini golf, etc). Events such as bingo, root beer socials, etc all offered through the resort. Easy drives to cashiers, highlands, brevard, white water rafting, horses riding, tubing etc. The kitchen was better stocked for any and all your cooking than my own! Loved the house and we had a great family vacation with folks from 11 yrs old to 75.

This is the first year my family and I have stayed in Sapphire Valley — we usually stay in Highlands. The house had plenty of rooms and tons of space. The location was perfect, too. I could walk our 2-year-old to the country club or community center easily. We had a ton of rain this trip unfortunately, so having access to the Sapphire Valley indoor pool was perfect. Highly recommend and will be returning!

This vacation home is great for families. The house had plenty of china, silverware, and cooking utensils for large family meals. There are numerous sitting and eating areas. The game room in the basement was great. Our favorite place was the screened porch. The host always replied quickly to any of our questions.

We had the best time with friends and a bunch of toddlers! Plenty of space to sleep with closets and floor space for pack & plays. Great room perfect for board games. Great porch and deck for morning coffee and afternoon naps. Enjoyed cooking in every night with a well stocked kitchen and S’mores at the fire pit. The location is awesome, only a 10 minute drive to town versus some mountain houses that are super remote or buried way into developments. We had a great time and would stay again!

This house is an absolute gem!! It was clean and well stocked while also being very cozy with unique furnishings. Beds were very comfortable, rooms were spacious, and the location was perfect. Donna was a great hostess and quick to respond to messages. We definitely plan to come back again!

This cabin was everything we were hoping for and more! Very very spacious and every amenity you could ask for. When we first arrived, one of the smoke detectors was beeping. We contacted the owner and she had someone out within 30 minutes! The house is in a ski community, but was very quiet. Definitely felt like we were up in the mountains by ourselves! We will definitely be rebooking this house in the future!

We spent 7 nights at this amazing property in Sapphire Valley. We chose it for the 6 Bedrooms to accommodate all of our family comfortably. We were extremely thrilled with the quality of the house upon arrival. It was described accurately in all of the information in the posting as well as what was sent to us by the owner but it definitely exceeded our expectations. All the rooms including Bedrooms, Kitchen, Game room, etc were very well stocked with everything you can imagine needing. I will not bring any books next time as it basically has it's own library and I look forward to reading some of the titles. They even have a full range of baby/toddler equipment which was very much appreciated. Donna, was attentive and communicated with us throughout our stay when we had questions. It's a great wooded property with privacy within a neighborhood. The Fire pit was our favorite as well as the large stone fireplace in the Great room. The only negative was an issue with the WiFi and not getting phone service at the house. We would most definitely recommend this house especially to large groups and will be looking for a time to come back again soon.

Family mountain getaway
We loved our time in this beautiful home! It is equipped with everything that a family can need to make it a home away from home. We celebrated 2 birthdays as well as the 4th of July during our stay. The neighborhood is beautiful; the bedrooms are comfortable; and the home is perfectly appointed. The cool mountain air was a welcome change from our hot summer. We hope to be back in the near future! Thank you for the great communication and hospitality.

Family Celebration
We have rented many homes for family gathering but this was by far the most like home. All of our family are aspiring chefs and great cooks. The kitchen is very well equipped with most anything you could need. There are vases to display flowers and everything to set a beautiful table. The bathrooms and towels were perfect. We truly enjoyed our stay and the outdoor seating areas. We highly recommend a stay in this lovely home.

Awesome Vacation Rental
We absolutely loved this house. It is much bigger than it looks in the pictures. There were 10 of us and there was space to hang out together or spread out for quiet, relaxing time. The swing on the screened porch was perfect. I spent way too much time on it reading, talking, and enjoying the quiet surroundings. The kitchen was very well stocked. The beds in were so comfortable. The house had plenty of extra towels and blankets so it felt just like home. Donna was very responsive and great to work with. We would LOVE to come back again soon.
