About this cottage rental
Treat your loved ones to a totally unique and fun experience along the very special Northern Coast of Caliifornia, and particularly in the Historic Village of Mendocino. It starts with a lumber mill cottage from the 1880’s that still maintains its historical character, and yet, is lovingly updated to fit the warmth, comfort, privacy and entertainment requirements of modern day Mendocino living and vacationing.
Walk to everything, fine restaurants, casual cafes, functional and clever shopping, both commercial and organic grocery stores, plus a local farmers market, beaches, pub, Headland Trails, Mendocino Art Center, or walk over to the Mendocino Theater Company for the current play offering. How about just relaxing for hours and hours and hours, or laying on the grass on a southern facing exposure. Listen to the foghorns, or listen to the nothingness, watch the birds and the boats. In addition to the Indoor Master Bathroom with Tub and Shower, take advantage of the additional outdoor fun and private shower in the garden.
Make Rhubarb Pie with fresh rhubarb from the back yard, or just sit in the garden hot tub, morning, noon and night. This spot is the center of The Mendocino Universe. Let those nighttime lit up star-studded skies seep into your soul and come back as you need. Let you dogs explore everything, or just laze on the deck in the back yard.
This is a unique property in a unique setting. A true Old World Mendocino Property dating back to the 1800's, both in reality and feeling. In addition to our feedback via vrbo, you can scroll towards the bottom here, just prior to the photos, and find our over 130 feedbacks left in our visitor comments book at the cottage.
The property is 47 feet by 160 feet. On the front part of the property sits two separate buildings with a breezeway between them. In one of the buildings is the master bedroom with a queen bed and sitting area. Right next to this bedroom, just a few feet away, with its own door for privacy, is the small bedroom set up mostly for children. That bedroom is great for young children and babies, keeps them close, but separate and private. It has a low single full length bed and a childs sleeping loft. Included in this building is the master bathroom with shower and tub.
Across the breezeway is the kitchen and living room. The living room and kitchen are both heated by a wood burning stove as well as a propane wall heater. Firewood is provided. The living room has a 40 inch Sony XBR Flat screen HD TV with satellite. It has a Blue-Ray DVD Player, which also receives free NETFLIX Streaming movies. It has Wireless Internet.
Upstairs over the living room is a sleeping loft with a double bed and window facing south with ocean view.
The garden also has a private outdoor shower, next to the hot tub plumbed with hot and cold water. Such a delight!! Once you are in the hot water, the shower is even great in the winter. Speaking of winter, those can be some of the best times. If you hit it right, you might get a really big storm that will bring you right down to the elements, rich in depth, and wonderful in its nurturing power.
There is a deck with patio table and chairs, along with a barbeque and hot tub.
Every year we have a fairly large cadre of repeat customers. Generally speaking, couples and families are the ones most drawn to the intimacy of this setting and cottage. It can handle up to 5 adults and 1 child or 1 adult and 5 children, and variations between.
We are always working on the property behind the scenes, upgrading, adding services, and generally making it more delightful and user friendly. We started a guest log about 10 years ago. We copied the visitors comments onto this web site. When people write reviews, they mostly write in the book at The Cottage.
So, to recap it all, If you are looking for a really comfy and down to earth home, centrally located, with all the modern amenities, ocean views, comfortable outside garden, with easy access to everything, with a multitude of sleeping possibilities, hot tub, embraces dogs, has character that dates back to the 1880's, is very private, and is in The Village (which we feel is the best choice for vacationing and visiting the area), is easy for couples, as well as for families, it is our pleasure to offer 'Garden Cottage'. As a side note, the website is listing us as 12 hours to respond to requests. That is a glitch, I am always on my cell phone and generally respond within minuets unless I am driving, etc. Always within an hour.

We love this funky place. Right in the village Wonderful new deck with a lovely view of the coast.

This very funky little gem is the only place I will ever stay in Mendo. Hubby slept in the main bedroom and I in the "kids bedroom" and both beds were super comfy. I loved my little cave! The kitchen is nicely appointed and the living areas just right. It's 2 blocks from Main St and the Headlands. I cannot get over how quiet it was.
The only problem we had was vrbo giving us the reervation and taking our deposit. It was an extreme hassle. Ron took the reigns and did a great job getting it all straightened out.
Can't wait to go back!

Loved staying at this delightful place. The gardens are beautiful and the buildings are marvelous. My dog loved being able to safely inspect the whole property. Highly recommend this accommodation.

Our second stay and even better than the first! So much charm and character and amazing location...walked everywhere all weekend.

The drawings and photos were accurate, but it did not say there were actually two buildings. The living room, dining room and kitchen are in one, while the bedrooms and bath are in another. Different but a great experience for those not used to the old concept of cottage. It was very peaceful, and the garden is very nice with an ocean view. We had our apéritif out in the garden. Kitchen is well stocked and there are lots of good DVDs to watch. Loved the rocking chairs. Bed was extremely comfortable with nice heavy blanket. You are in walking distance of everything, so we didn't use the car at all - just parked it in front and walked everywhere. Definitely a nice place to stay, and it would be a treat for older children (around 10) for loft sleeping.

We try to stay here every year and love everything about this property. The new deck on the lower part of the lot has a beautiful view of the ocean and is a great place to have a meal or read a book. The location cannot be beat.

Such a beautiful place to call home base while walking around the lovely hamlet of Mendocino. The dual buildings were just the right blend of vintage California with the living room/kitchen building being represented in the Mendocino Museum's 3D diorama as present in 1860. The hot tub was a wonderful nightly ritual and the lawn, the lushest you could ever lay on, was dreamy as was the ocean view from the table and chairs at the far end of the plot. California Dreamin' indeed. Can't wait to visit again.

This was a wonderful place to stay. We loved it. Our doggie loved the yard she could have played there all day. We were able to walk to restaurants and take her as well
Thanks again for having us.

The cottage is exactly as it appears in the pictures. We were able to walk to everything in town. My boys loved the lofts and enjoyed climbing the ladders to their beds. The hot tub was perfect due to the cooler temps.

This was our second stay at Ron's Garden Cottage and we already look forward to our next visit. It's hard to imagine a better rental. We love the charming rustic feel the moment we push through the wooden garden gate. Location is perfection, home is spotless, beds and pillows comfy, and the spacious, lush garden is delightful first thing in the morning and at night when we soak in the hot tub. Thank you!

The perfect place to relax in Mendocino . . . within walking distance of the Headlands and downtown. Comfortable and charming. The outdoor shower is wonderful, and the new viewing deck is the perfect place to relax and watch the ocean in privacy. The hot tub is a great way to start or end the day. Can't recommend it highly enough!

No television in bedroom which may be an idea to add.

Everything was very clean, and the furniture was very comfortable. We could totally relax. Loved the hot tub and the out house. Lots of room in the backyard & lovely views. Eating in or eating out with no issues. And I dog loved it too. Easy to communicate ... very friendly.

Rustic, charming, and cared for with lots of love. We very much enjoyed our experience in the cabins and lounging in the comfortable outdoor spaces. Being so close to town is a huge plus as well.

We loved staying at Ron's place. It is a little rustic, with its split kitchen / bedroom buildings - but that for us was part of the appeal. Comfortable beds, amazing outdoor shower, stunning ocean view from the kitchen and yard. Best of all, we could walk to anywhere we had to go: shopping, restaurants, theatre, bluff trails. Communication and getting into the property were all easy. Highly recommended!

my husband and I had a fabulous time at this wonderfully quaint yet well-equipped cottage! Everything that we would need was provided and well laid out. We enjoyed the beautiful garden and views of the ocean. Can't say enough good things about this rental and hope to be back next year for a repeat of a great time!! P.S. the location cannot be beat. We were within walking distance of all the shops, stores and restaurants, perfect! Thank you, Ron for being such a responsive and congenial host.

Cute, funky and perfect hideaway in the town of Mendocino. Walk to everywhere or just enjoy the yard with amazing views. We have stayed here before and will return in the future. A real gem.

I’d been secretly coveting this peaceful little place for years. I used to live nearby and would walk past the cottage regularly, thinking: I need to live there someday. And now I have, even if it was just for a few days. I brought my two little dogs and they had a blast exploring and running around the property. The fence is solid and it was nice not to worry about the tiny one escaping (if there was a hole to the outside world, she would have found it). This place is old school, funky Mendo. Nothing fancy, just good, happy vibes, lush greenery in every direction and so very quiet. I will definitely visit again. Thank you, Ron! The cottage was everything I hoped it would be and beyond. Couldn’t be happier.

This was our 3rd time staying at the Garden Cottage. We feel very comfortable and relaxed here. The host Ron is responsive and accommodating. The backyard is beautiful and private. We loved the new ocean-view deck...the perfect place for morning coffee. Walking distance to shops, restaurants and easy hiking trails. We will be back

Very nice, beautiful, charming property, rustic, old world, comfortable. Would have liked some coffee grounds for our first morning (we happened to have a few kuerig pods that we opened and used. Would have liked some kleenex used toilet paper.

Our family of 4, two adults, 10 year old and 13 year old absolutely love it here! We first stayed here in 2021 and we are so glad we came back. The house is clean, private and comfy. Love the deck in the back with a nice ocean view. Nice walking distance to restaurants/grocery store and shops. We love it here and plan on coming back!

Love this rustic, cozy cabin. We sat inside and watched the waves beat the shore and hail fall from the sky. Having a brisk walk between the sleeping quarters and living room was invigorating. All with the amenities of Mendocino at your fingertips.

This place is just as the listing describes, except the stove is new and beautiful! These are two very comfortable cottages surrounded by a private, lovely garden where there are views of the Mendocino inlet and ocean. We were there during a rain storm but the heat kept us cozy. Great location, charming place and we'd love to come back!

What a quirky Mendocino treat! We love that everything is in walking distance but its also hard to leave when there are such lovely grounds, cozy nooks, and a hot tub to boot! We're looking forward to coming back soon!

This incredible property made our family of four all very happy- both in the rain and the sun. The house is very cozy and the various sitting areas have coast and headlands views. We enjoyed hot tub and outdoor shower. Kitchen was well equipped.

Rustic but very clean and great location. It's a wonderful place for our special furry friend.

We really enjoyed our stay in what we thought of as little hobbit houses…the yard was great for our little one and we loved the hot tub. The location was great for a vacation where once we arrived no one wanted to drive! We love Mendocino!

Comfortable, quaint, family-friendly, pet-friendly Mendocino home. 2 minute walk to the trails and 2 minute walk to town. Would definitely return.

This is our second year staying at the cottage. Our family loves it. It is our favorite place to stay in the area and we have stayed in many different properties over the years. I can't emphasize what a special place this is. Ron (the host) is so easy to work with and the property is an absolute jewel. We will be back next year.

We visited with our two dogs, who loved the large, fenced yard. The historic homes retained their old-world charm, but with all the amenities. A simple but lovely retreat.

From the moment you walk into this wonderful home, you are wrapped in the peace of its character and soul. It is abundantly evident how much care and affection the owners have invested. The bed is very comfortable, the kitchen well stocked, and the home is configured with every comfort in mind.
If you have the chance to stay this gem…TAKE IT!

We had a lovely time at the Garden Cottage in Mendocino! Cozy, beautiful views, relaxing days - what more could you ask for? Bed is very comfortable and the kitchen has everything you could need. Walking through the ivy-covered gate is the closest thing you can get to staying in a Secret Garden, or perhaps the Shire!

Idyllic place to stay to celebrate an anniversary. Peaceful, beautiful, and well-maintained. Easy walk to everything, including the bluff trail. Can’t wait to return!

The location of this place is superb. Easy to enter. Parking is easy. You will love the outdoor space. Nice sitting area. We loved the jacuzzi. It was clean and we felt very comfortable using it. The outdoor shower was also charming. The ocean view from the property was wonderful especially from the loft bedroom.
It just felt like a magical place away from home. The beds were comfortable as well. We slept well which is super important when travelling. Thank you for having us.
