October 21, 2011 – New York Times, Emily Brady:
“Sonoma County may be best known for its wineries and the tony (sic) towns of Healdsburg and Sonoma, but West County, as locals call the area around Sebastopol, is where the vineyards begin to give way to rolling hills, bohemian enclaves and the wild Pacific Coast beyond. Sure, there’s wine produced here — excellent pinots in particular — but there’s plenty to explore beyond it, especially around Sebastopol, where in recent years new restaurants, shops and live music venues have opened, securing the town’s position as West County’s arts and culture hub.”

American as Apple Pie
“‘I’ve been to Napa and Sonoma,’ you hear people say, as if they were one and the same. Sure, Sonoma’s 300-plus wineries, like those of vine-centric Napa, offer peak wine tasting, from Ravenswood’s deep Zinfandels to Gloria Ferrer’s sophisticated sparklers. But if you’ve visited only the county’s wineries, come back to sample the astounding diversity that makes Sonoma one of America’s travel treasures.

Spend some time floating in an inner tube down the Russian River and walking amid ancient giants—one over 1,400 years old—at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. Poke around the old Russian stockade at Fort Ross, which turns 200 in 2012, or the Spanish adobe mission, San Francisco Solano, in Sonoma town. Hunt for antiques along Petaluma’s downtown Victorian row, and dine on seasonal sake-steamed, aged abalone at Michelin-starred Cyrus in Healdsburg. And don’t miss a flaky, fruit-packed slice of Gravenstein pie from Mom’s Apple Pie, a roadside stop outside Sebastopol. It ranks up there with a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir as a real taste of Sonoma.”

A group of 8 crotchety old men were well pleased with the accommodations and amenities provided at the Wineberry Lodge for our bachelor-party/weekend. Heidi, the host, was communicative, very helpful, and all-around excellent. Highly recommended for a large group of adults, such as ours, family gatherings, or trips shared between two to three couples.

We booked the Wineberry Lodge to celebrate 2 friends’ 50th birthdays for a 4-day getaway to wine country in Napa and were pleasantly surprised at the luxurious accommodations. We had 2 couples + a dear friend in our party and had plenty of room for our stay. This home was tastefully decorated, very comfortable and well-stocked in every way to meet our expectations. The outdoor kitchen became our evening gathering place as it had spacious seating and large countertops. Despite traveling in the wintertime, which was very rainy, we found the outdoor heaters and pulled them in close to stay warm. The hot tub was a bonus and we took advantage as it was kept hot and ready for use. The indoors was clean in every room and the living room had comfortable furniture for our morning coffee conversations. Modern, updated bathroom facilities was a nice touch and we found everything we needed for cooking meals including nice flatware, silverware and plentiful wine glasses! Heidi was a gracious host, providing a couple bottles of local wine to get us started and fresh fruit. There was even a neat container in the fridge with coffee beans to grind and a grinder conveniently located by the coffee station. We loved the horse and stagecoach out front and the calming stream in the backyard, all adding to our luxurious stay. The location was great and we used it as our launch point to wineries in Napa, shopping in Sebastopol and Calistoga plus the Armstrong Redwood preserve for sightsee

Check in, communication throughout our stay, the house were all excellent! There were only 4 adults so the house was plenty big. The outdoor kitchen was perfect, we cooked outside two nights with no issues. Heidi gave us a pizza oven lesson and guided us on where to get the dough. There are several wineries close by and about 45 minutes to either Napa or Sonoma, which is a scenic drive that goes by quickly. The house location is within 5 minutes of groceries and restaurants There are no insane checkout rules, just start the dishwasher and leave! Loved our visit!

The Lodge was just right for our needs (two young couples, and their dad and uncle). Plenty of space, great kitchen and TV room, comfy beds, clean-working bathrooms, and easy laundry facilities. Location cannot be beat (next door to Merry Edwards; central to northern Sonoma and Armstrong State Park). Pizza-Patio is the best; we had 6 other family members come by to make pizza - amazing memories. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Lodge was beautiful and so well equipped. Everything you could need was there. Our family pizza making day was a memory I will treasure. Conversations in the hot tub while sipping wine was wonderful. This is a place to slow down and renew with the family. Thanks, Heidi
