The place is centrally located and easy to get around town. The upstairs unit is cozy but not ideal for 6’5 or taller like myself. Master bed was really comfortable but the two sofa beds are extremely uncomfortable. It is also located behind a gas station which we found to be busy and somewhat loud weekday mornings. Probably not an issue for most but being that we live in the country we felt it. Overall the place was fine and Served it’s purpose.

Carpinteria is a very cute town, and this location was steps away from a small little main street, with many cute shops and restaurants. The walk to the beach was only ~10 min, and it was very quiet and clean. The house was exactly as pictured, and it was well-stocked with linens, etc. Very clean and neat. Would definitely go back.

Nice location

Absolutely charming and enjoyable experience. Perfectly located and walking distance to everything (shops, restaurants, gas, Smart & Final, and beach). The unit had everything needed, very clean and beautifully decorated and spacious. Jena was a wonderful host and available as needed. She has a darling shop on the first floor filled with treasures. Everything was lovely!

This was the perfect place for my family of 5 to stay. It was with in walking distance to everything. We slept with the windows open and it was still very quiet. We will definitely be staying here again in the future.

Just loved staying here. Right in the heart of Carpinteria, right by the one of the best coffee shops (Lucky Llama, right across the street) and one block from the cute main street of the town. Great accommodations, big, big screen television, lovely kitchen, super comfortable bedroom.

Our Host was incredibly welcoming and invested in being sure that we had everything we needed. The upstairs unit was roomy and very tastefully designed and decorated. Our two teenage kids had plenty of space for sleeping with the two pull out couches. Walking everywhere for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks was a breeze…not to mention the beach! We’ll be back for sure!

Great location, a block away from downtown. Bed was very comfortable. Would have loved more amenities in the kitchen but perfect for a short stay.

Excellent location, wonderful Victorian centrally located, just across the street from Lucky Llama Coffee House (one of the best in town) and one block from the main street that leads to beach. Just a great experience all the way around.

I was disappointed with the wall heating unit….it worked the first night but not the second. It was cold and I was not going to call for assistance at midnight.

Had to reschedule twice due to family circumstances but was able to do so easily, and this trip was worth the wait. Short walk to the beach and local food and coffee. Fabulous restaurants between Carpenteria and Santa Barbara! Wine/brew and live music and just a great time connecting with family.

Great location, Friendly Host
We just returned from a 10 day stay in this hidden gem of a beach town. Jana was a wonderful host and made sure we had everything we needed. She also owns the shop on the premises, so was readily available. Location, location, location. This quaint and quirky beach house is close to everything! We loved the walkability of the city. Great restaurants, beautiful beaches. There’s even a seal sanctuary within walking distance. No AC, so windows must be kept open when over 70. During our stay, temps soared into the mid-80’s, so our upstairs apt was quite toasty. Fans were provided and helped quite a bit, but it was still hot. Jana and her husband are planning a remodel of this cute apartment in the future. Restaurant recommendations: Giannfranco,s (eat in the garden), Nutbelly (great thin crust pizza), Teddy’s By the Sea, and so Padaro Beach Grill (up the road a mile or two). We can’t wait to come back to Carpinteria!

Great location - close to all
Carpinteria is our new favorite place to visit. And the Castro house was a great place to stay. Strategically located close enough to town to walk to anything you needed as well as to the beach. We would definitely stay there again. And so should you!

Very charming place
Overall we loved the Castro house. It is a very old house (1908?), with the charm and quirks that accompany homes of this era. Some parts have been remodeled, such as the kitchen and bathroom. Being upstairs, it can get pretty warm though, even on days in the 60s. Many windows do not open because the wood is old, and swells, and most windows do not have screens. The owner, Jana, who was super friendly and helpful, said they are planning a remodel. The location is excellent. A block from downtown, and about a mile walk to beach.

Smell
When we opened the door upon arrival we were shocked by how old/musty the place smelled, but since we had prepaid we opened all of the windows that we could and kept them open during our stay which meant that all street noise came right in. Also, if you are going to have an event on the property during a stay you might let the renter know when they book so that they can decide if they do want to stay there.

So Fabulous!
This is our second stay at the upstairs unit at the Castro House. Jill is a gracious host and we love our upstairs bungalow. It's quaint with old-time crank windows that we open up and never close until we leave. We bring our two college age sons along and we all fit comfortably thanks to the two sleeper sofas. We love that we can walk to anywhere in Carpenteria with ease--from the beach to downtown. Anything you could want for the beach is provided here--from towels to boogie boards to wetsuits. We are already eagerly anticipating our next stay here.

Convenient to restaurants. A short drive to the beach.
Very easy to walk to restaurants and shops. We didn't mind a 5 minute drive to beach parking. The unit was clean and was renovated enough but needs a lot of work relative to patching nail holes, correcting peeling paint, scuff marks. Garbage disposal didn't work, kitchen sink soap dispenser not in service. Window cranks need updating. Cables draped on roof.

Filthy, dirty, dusty, sticky, stinky, stuffy... I never in my life stayed in such a filthy place. It just felt unhealthy to stay in that house which hasn't been properly cleaned in ages. We spent the first hours of our stay trying to clean the place. We wiped all the switches, handles, and the fridge as they were all sticky and just dirty. There was dog hair everywhere, including on the bathroom mirrors. Our clothes were full of them at the end of our stay. The windows would not open properly, some of them were just broken (no handle, or just some rusty crank handles). Luckily enough we had brought our own set of sheets, because guess what, theirs were just stained and did not seem very clean. Vrbo should do a better job accepting some listings before making them available to the public. We spent all our time out and would come back at night just to sleep to avoid being in this listing as much as we could. It seriously impacted our stay. Just stay away from this place unless they do some serious in-depth cleaning and fix what needs to be fixed.

Just right
Everything was perfect at Castro House: The historic location and building style, the proximity to the beach and town center, the mellow artistic interior decoration --- just perfect to relax. I could even bring my dogs! The best thing: you can hear the waves crashing into the shore at night. This was just beautiful. I'm comin' again!!!

Perfect place for a break in SoCal
This place exceeded our expectations in almost every way. Clean, bright, open and spacious.
Convenient walking to all of the best parts of Carpenteria, one block from grocery, two breweries within 1/4 mile and the beach just a 10 minute walk away.
Loved it. In a different version of life, I would absolutely want to live there.

Very nice place in the great location.
Beautiful house and both downstairs and upstairs apartments have a lot of artistic/design taste. We also met owner, she is very friendly and helped us with great recommendations.

Charming with Character.
100 year old house was had a lot character. Great location for visiting the town and restaurants. Gas station next door was a little noisy and frame could use an upgrade. Would book again.

Stayed Before - Would Stay Again!
love the spacious, yet historic charm of this upstairs 1 bedroom loft-like apartment. open the windows and the breeze is fantastic. no need for AC even in July/August! Property manager was very accommodating and even let us borrow her crock pot. This is the 3rd time I've stayed here and I'd stay again in a heartbeat :)

Terrific place in the heart of town. Easily walk to the beach and the main strip. The owner/property manager was incredibly accommodating, kind and professional. Highly recommend.

What a great place!
The place is great and couldn’t have a more central location. The apartment was plenty spacious for the three of us. Jill is an enthusiastic and helpful host looking to do whatever she can to make your stay more pleasant.
6.0
Great location, not for people wanting to cook
This apartment is in a great location. Jill, who was the contact for the apartment, was super friendly and answered all our questions. They also have a ton of beach stuff to borrow. However, the apartment didn't have a manual, which had us texting Jill for whatever odd questions we had about the apartment. And the kitchen was not very functional. It had all the equipment to cook, but the oil and vinegar left behind was rancid and the light in the kitchen was not great at night, which made it hard to find pots and pans and actually cook. If you are eating out for most meals, then this wouldn't be a problem. Also, the TV in the bedroom and living room were basically non-functioning as there was a cable box, but no cable signal. I didn't even bother to text Jill about this, because we were only staying for 2 nites and I didn't want to text her about fixing it. The place is also above some businesses and a rental out back, so there is a lot of traffic in the building itself. I think the rental is fine for people who are just going to use it for a place to rest their head and for people with pets. It's very close to the beach and the main strip.

Peaceful retreat from a busy life.
We had everything we needed. The view of the mountains was awesome. The walk to the beach was only about 10 minutes. We enjoyed an outside market the weekend we were there.
