This hotel was built in 1857, so it is very old. We did not expect the Marriott, but some things could be improved upon. Unfortunately, the chairs in the room were very old and uncomfortable so we decided to read down in the lobby on a tufted couch. Much better option. Plus it was very entertaining to watch the comings and goings happening in the lobby. The Queen bed was not the most comfortable, and could use an replacement update. Also, the deodorant that they use to freshen the room is was too STRONG. Fortunately, the rooms have 2 windows that we could open all the way to bring in fresh air. Without that option, we would not have been able to stay in the room.
We did love the uniqueness of the hotel and its decorations and history. There is a book in the lobby with several stories about the hotel and its history. The old elevator was an adventure to be sure. The beautiful staircase was an option if you don't want to brave the elevator.
Overall, it was a pleasant stay. There are so many shopping options in the area, and lots of choices for places to eat. We were there to see my grand daughter walk in the holiday parade with her 4-H club. It was a special occasion, but next time I will book a room facing the street.
If you want a unique experience, give this hotel a try. I don't think you will be disappointed.

One night stay for grandson's wedding. Stay was convenient for wedding location. Accommodations were nice. Price was very reasonable

It’s a historic hotel in the old town of Placerville. The staff were very friendly. We had parking for our car. The bed wasn’t very comfortable but the room was quiet. It was great to be in walking distance of shops and wonderful restaurants!

This place was interesting 😆 I booked this place because of its location in downtown and it being close to the wedding we were attending. When we checked in, there was a sign that they were away helping someone but to call the number and someone would assist. We called the number and someone come down right away. The person who checked us in was very nice and helpful. She said we had to try the elevator at least once. We did and it is not your typical elevator. Very old school. It was cool! The room was a little disappointing. The floors sloped, the beds were sloped, candy wrappers around the windowsill, and the closet had smoke alarms laying around with no batteries (rooms are equipped with functional alarms). The lobby was pretty cool though with the decor and parking was very convenient. This is a good place for an overnight stay. Probably not the place for multiple night stay. Overall a good experience.

Was good, but no heat until November. With changing climate, this definitely needs to change.

Center of town and close to Apple Hill. Historical items in lobby added interest.
Staff friendly and efficient. Historical elevator added to nostalgia.

This place is a historic hotel so it does not have many of the amenities as most hotel so if you like old this is a place for you.

Everything was great except the refrigerator didn't work, and although there was a mini kitchen, there were no utensils or plates. There was only one kitchen thand towel. No paper towels or napkins. The room smelled strongly of disinfectant and isopropyl alcohol.

Stayed for one night for yarn crawl. Excellent location. But a little worn down and absolutely no utensils in the kitchenette which was super annoying

We always try to stay at the Carey when we are in Placerville. It is a unique and historical place that we want to support and at the same time enjoy! Many eating and shopping opportunities within easy walking distance.

Very centrally located. Elevator takes getting use to. Didn't see any ghosts.

IF ONLY the walls there could talk…! The staff was unhelpful for my ghost hunt.. wouldn’t let me see the basement. A total disappointment and the staff was nonchalant about it…

Pretty happy with the overall experience, I would stay there again. It’s an old hotel, so remember that when booking it. But it offered everything we needed.

Staying at the Cary House is like a bit of time travel. It's an old hotel, well kept with local people greeting you at the desk. It's not super fancy, but it feels like more of a connective experience than any other option in the area. I'll definitely stay here again when I come visit.

It’s in the best location in Placerville, right in the historic downtown. But the property is not maintained. Grimy old carpets, almost no staff. The AC in the room didn’t work. The refrigerator didn’t work. Location A plus, property condition D

Our TV didn’t work in our room, and we found a long white hair in our bed as well as hair in the drain of the shower… aside from that, it was a very historic and neat experience with great food in walking distance!

Fabulous location. Sad that the balcony was not available to use as it was closed. Maintenance of rooms could be better but for the age of the building, most things were fine

Small room with comfortable bed. Fairly quiet and convenient to shops.

From 65 year old couple visiting the Sacramento area for a wedding. Room was a King suite very clean, well laid out, small stove, microwave, fridge. Very historic, preserved lobby, artifacts, great town. Interesting Main Street to walk on and browse. Excellent restaurants low to high priced. Safe parking. Recommend the Publick House across the street, Pasty shop a few doors from the hotel, and Sweetie Pie cafe a half mile up the street for best breakfast and lunch and pecan rolls ever. Fabulous used bookstore. Great location for short trips to hiking and driving, scenic drives and wineries.

The lock to the room didnt work, and eventually, another guest had to break in to the room so we could use the room. This made us late to the event we came to town to attend

This is a historic hotel in the middle of Main Street. Good parking at the rear of hotel. Easily walkable to many restaurants and shops nearby.

We arrived at 11 pm. The doors were locked, and there wass a number to call for after hours check in/assistance. I was informed that our reservation was checked in ahead of our arrival. The representative on the phone had told me to check under the front floor mat for my key card and parking pass!!! Fortunately, it was still there and the crackhead up the street that was swearing at the top of his lungs about the ice cream store being closed did not take it first.
The hotel itself is pretty awesome! It is super old and very cool. Even the elevator is pretty cool.
The room and decor were definitely very dated, mainly to fit the old timey feel. However, our reservation was for 2 adults and 2 children. We booked a king bedroom suite. The photos on expedia showed a couch, which appeared to be a couch bed. Our room had only 1 king bed and a table. We contacted the night attendant (had to call more than once) and requested some roll away beds. Thankfully, they had 2.
When we went to turn the tv on, it was not working, so we just wrote it off until the morning.
On our way out the next morning, we informed the lady at the front desk. She seemed very annoyed that i was asking about getting the tv looked at by maintanance. She said it would get taken care of...Unfortunately, they never got it working for us and it appeared that they never even attempted. We were in town for a funeral and really didnt make it a priority to have the tv fixed, so we left it at that.
