The room we were in was a bit dirty such as a lot of dust and stuff on the bed that we ended up wiping off aswell as under the red was a used q-tip and more trash, more importantly the pillow looked stained or maybe it was mold we didn’t know, the blanket that was provided in the room was one of those blue moving blankets that’s it, that and a very thin sheet was all we had, we even tried to go buy our own blankets for the night however the stores were closed at the time. Will not be back that’s for sure

The bathroom floor and shower curtain were covered in green and black mildew. When we alerted the front desk the sink was completely clogged, their “repair” was to remove the clog at least enough so it could slowly drain over a matter of hours. Spider visitors gave us great company along the ceilings, probably being fed by the bugs coming in the rusty, old window screen inserts. Patio lounge chairs were strewn around unclean. The children’s “play house” had a danger sign to “keep out” - it looked like it may fall over at any moment. And it was close to a busy street with the sound of heavy traffic.
Overall, the accommodations didn’t evoke romantic or rustic, old-times Hilo. They were decrepit and in disrepair. DO NOT believe the pictures they post online.

Property is poorly maintained and online pictures are of only one room. Rest of property needs updated to match pictures.

We booked three rooms for six adults. Two of the three rooms had bed bugs. We immediately fled to another hotel. Even if there had been no infestation problems, the rooms were cramped and had no AC.

For being over 100 years old, it's exactly what you'd expect. She's old but has so much charm. The room and bathroom was clean, and met our expectations. The fans and no AC was okay with us. The breakfast was nice too!

Sheets was on stained blanket, with no sheets under and no bedspread. No hot water. Curtain was torn and couldn't close. Noisy frogs. They said I wouldn't be charged after we left.

Hard to describe, it was rundown but so nostalgic. For the price we have no complaints. Clean & bed was comfy.

The old historical plants and bamboo surrounding the property brings out all the jungle sounds like a symphony. Amazing!

No TV, no AC. Mosquitoes, frogs, pests all over. Floor is extremely dirty. No one should live here.
Shower leaks to lower floor and inside shower wall is full of water.

This place is old and has lots of flavor. She is a 114 year old hotel. The floors aren't level, but her age shows us that uneven floors are cool! We will be back!

There are pests everywhere. No Ac and ripped window screens. No TV. When I was taking a shower it leaked to the room below. Frogs are jumping around . I poked a small whole on the wall and was shocked to see the wall behind was full of water.
The floors are dirty and its location next to the highway makes it noisy all night. There is NO TV or AC.
This is a terrible place.

The accommodation was comfortable with a nice little breakfast offered also. Unfortunately the wifi didn't work in the downstairs room I was in but worked fine up in the lobby area.

This hotel was very quaint! As expected for an older hotel no ac and no tv but that was no problem. Hot water in the shower takes a little time to heat but I don’t think anyone would want to take a hot shower in an already warm room. Ceiling fan worked great in keeping cool during the night. Room was clean and maintained throughout the stay. Staff was lovely and very helpful. Would definitely recommend for a more down to earth experience in Hawai’i.

Checking in late seemed a bit sketchy. Could have been cleaner. However, Bed was clean & comfy. Upon rising, things looked better! Quirky & with an old Hawaiian motel setting! Interesting artifacts, amethyst rock, Hawaiian wood carvings & other arts! Surrounded by lots of green foliage, bamboo trees, relaxing lounge's & a quiet setting! Lots of Coqui’s singing, if you call it that!? Also, offered a free continental breakfast with coffee, juice, fresh hard boiled eggs, fruit, pastries, spam musubi…tasty & satisfying! As for returning to the “The Wild Ginger,” we want to bring our great grands back to get a feel of the Old Hawaiian Way🌺

I actually stayed at the hotel twice due to a good Expedia deal, and the last two days were a slight improvement. The 'Superior room' wasn’t much different - the only additions were a floor mat, a stand up air cooler and bigger bed, otherwise it was identical to the Standard room. But the room was also on a noticeable slant which can't be good.
I was disappointed that there was no shampoo or even soap in the bathroom - thankfully the previous guest had left their bar in the shower. And the front desk was unable to provide me with a receipt on checkout, because of their 'system' - by that stage I'd had enough and just wanted to get going.

This review is not so much a critique, but providing information for those thinking of staying here. My first impression of the hotel was awful - the building looks like a wreck from the carpark. Once you get through the front door, you get a better idea of the set-up & start to relax and I was warmly welcomed at check-in.
The room was disappointing. To have no room wifi or a TV in this day and age isn’t really good enough. There was also no aircon in the room, just a small box fan, which helped a bit. The bathroom also needs a lot of work - there is no outlet so I had to shave sitting on my bed - and the shower curtain rod wasn’t secured & nearly landed on my head.
The service is the best thing going for the hotel - the half dozen young ladies working there were all very polite. There was also wifi available in the public area upstairs, but the mosquitoes were terrible & I'm still scratching 5 days later. It got so bad that I started sitting in my car in the carpark just to check my emails.
Whilst I don’t regret staying there, I wouldn’t go back if I was in Hilo again - just too many issues.

This is typical old school Hawaii, just like old school Florida.
OLD!!! No bugs, very clean, but old. Didn't bother me in the least. Very convenient walk to restaurants and bars. Great crash pad after beach or exploring, perfect stay over if want a break from camping.
No pool, no a/c, no TV.....no problem for me!
I would definitely stay there again with out hesitation should the occasion arise.

Don’t stay here. The building is in an extreme state of disrepair We saw evidence of termites. The. Floors are slanted and it feels as if the building will collapse at any time.

It looks like it hasn’t been cleaned. Most amenities were either broken or unusable. We left because of how uncomfortable it was.
