About this cottage rental
SPECTACULAR HOME!!! First floor has AN ISLAND KITCHEN, OPEN CONCEPT LIVING/DINING OUT TO FIRST FLOOR SIDE AND FRONT OCEAN DECKS, 2 BEDROOMS. Wood burning fireplace for cool August/December nights. For PRIVACY this floor will be closed to the one-bedroom upstairs apt. which the owner couple will sometimes occupy. The 1st Floor accommodation consists of 2 BEDROOMS: the master with a queen bed ( NOW WITH A GENIE REMOTE FOR OCEAN VIEWING and single bed; the second bedroom with one double bed, a sofa and one pop-up single for an overnight guest. A four-foot-wide, glass/tile shower in the bathroom services both bedrooms. Also, there is a portable toilet kept in the hallway closet for emergencies.
So, this apt. with its majestic seascapes, islands, open ocean, and sunsets, presides over Johns Bay. The property consists of one acre of gently sloping lawn to a rockbound coast. Pemaquid Beach ( ask owners about a short-cut access) and the Lighthouse (a drive) are nearby. We are a NO-PETS and TOBACCO-FREE household to accommodate all guests. All sheets/linens are provided as are fireplace wood and charcoal barbecue. Renters have full access to the two decks, tables, chairs, umbrellas, etc. to the picnic table and other tables, chairs and umbrellas on the roadside grounds. Renters can walk to Pemaquid Beach, although it is a long walk for the elderly but enters will be given access to a short-cut should they desire. We are located approximately 1500 feet away from this most gorgeous, fine-white-sand, beach. Pemaquid Beach (known as one of the best in Maine) is tractor-sifted every night, and the facility operates a seasonal totally rebuilt concession that holds change rooms, showers, rental items and also sells good basic food and drinks. We provide a beach umbrella and chairs for your day's enjoyment at Pemaquid Beach. Pemaquid Lighthouse is a picturesque and magical place complete with nautical museum and art gallery with an ocean-view restaurant adjacent to the lighthouse. We've driven here in the early morning hours for the ritual, rising of the sun over Monhegan Island. This New England lighthouse and its majestic, geological outcroppings will stir the photographer/painter/humanist in everyone. Caution: DO NOT VENTURE TOO FAR ONTO THE ROCKS. A ROGUE WAVE COULD FOREVER SWEEP YOU OUT TO SEA - PLEASE BE FOREWARNED!!
Museums/day trips/evening Trips: The Owl's Head Transportation Museum (Owl's Head, Me.) is a magnificent facility to visit. Antique cars, trucks and planes abound and are this facility's specialty showpieces. The OHTM occasionally provides opportunities to ride in antique biplanes during specific times of the year. The Maine Maritime Museum (Bath, Me.) is another destination from which you will come away with a great appreciation of Maine's maritime heritage/history. The Farnsworth Art Museum (Rockland, Me.) owns and displays a large, permanent collection of the Wyeth family paintings (N.C., Andrew and Jamie) as well as works by many other artists. The Farnsworth constantly hosts shows of all stripes of artists throughout the year. Bowdoin College (Brunswick, Me.) stages live theatre productions and has a new recital Hall and museum open to the Public. The Rockport Opera House (Rockport, Me.) hosts many world-class music and operatic concerts through its Bay Chamber Concert series and master-class offerings.
Boating: Pemaquid Harbor provides free community access (boat ramp at the 'Fort') to the waterfront for all types of marine craft, from sail, motor to kayak. Re: kayaking, local rentals/guided tours are available in the town of Pemaquid. Tie-ups for small, row and motorboats are facilitated at the Pemaquid town dock; however, the dock is seized upon by boats throughout the summer, so access is on a 'first-come, first-served' basis. Wonderful, sunset, puffin- and whale-watching cruises are offered by the comfortable 'Hardy' passenger vessel out of New Harbor. The Hardy Boat also takes day tripping passengers to and from magical, Monhegan Island 10 miles out to sea. Hiking the island's cathedral woods and coastline are breath-taking and memorable experiences. Finally, charter/touring boats operate out of nearby Boothbay Harbor. On such a day trip, you might charter a deep-sea-fishing vessel and return home at dusk with, if you're lucky, many flounder, strippers or even tuna.
And now, Booth Bay boasts a magnificent botanical garden!

Craig and Frances could not have been any more gracious. Craigs work with us (we are an older couple and definitely technically retarted) was time consuming for him and he was great. We even were invited by them for musical neighborhood get together. View was outstanding

My husband and I along with another couple spent a week together relaxing at this wonderful apartment on the ocean. The place was very clean, and it had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and to cook most meals in house. The owners were in the apartment above which was not a problem. They were very responsive and fun to chat with. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Sunsets on the porch of this property last forever and are spectacular.

Amazing view
We loved our time at this house. We didn’t travel far because everything we love about Maine was right here—the ocean, the lobster and amazing scenery.

Stunning Bay View
From the moment we opened the door, we were delighted with a beautiful view of St John’s Bay. The house was extremely comfortable for my husband and I but could certainly accommodate a small family.
The outdoor decks were so nice to have meals and enjoy sunsets. The house was very clean and communication with the owners was excellent. We were lucky to have great weather and a wonderful week. We’ll be back.

Fantastic Views
Wonderful home with views from every room of the ocean. Clean, neat, lovely furnishings, very updated appliances, excellent communication with owner. This property is a little bit of heaven on earth. You can’t go wrong with all the amenities also. It was one of those rare times when expectations were exceeded.

Wonderful property but misleading listing
The views are great from the deck. The kitchen has superb appliances and everything you could possibly want to cook with and there is an abundance of spices and condiments. The surrounding properties are well kept and the neighborhood is very quiet and relaxing. The listing says that there is a beach 1500 feet away. It is actually about one mile away if you walk or about 1.2 miles if you drive. The entrance fee is $5 per person. The listing led us to believe that the apartment was 2200 sq. ft. but It has no more than 1100 sq ft. If we had known that we would not have rented here. Even at 1100 sq ft., the entire apartment would be more comfortable with less furniture. The living room is cluttered. The bedrooms are small and crowded with too many pieces of furniture. They are too small for the number of beds in each, making it difficult to move around. The 2nd bedroom has a sleeper sofa that, if pulled out, blocks access to the double bed. Even without opening the pull-out bed, the double bed is pushed against the wall, so you can only get in the bed from one side. Thus the apartment effectively has only 3 useable beds, not 4. Two are double and one is a single. This could be a 5-star property if it were listed accurately..

Stunning views
A very good experience. The house is very comfortable and attractive. This is a place that lends itself to spending time there to enjoy the light filled space and the spectacular views, while taking day trips.
There were some initial issues with the cleanliness after the previous guests. Our hosts, who are Canadian, were stuck in Canada due to COVID-19 restrictions and were unable to directly supervise the cleaning. However, they were very sympathetic to our concerns and responsive in contacting the cleaning person and offering to refund part of the cleaning fee.
All in all, this was a very good experience in a very special place, and we would recommend it to anyone.

Beautiful views but...
This property is right on the water and the waves coming in bring a beautiful breeze every day. You see the water from every room of the house. The house itself is very light & clean except for the small dead bugs expected in Maine. The kitchen is well-stocked, beds comfortable, & plenty of linens. There’s a laundry machine & dryer to share with the owners who usually stay in the smaller apartment upstairs. The deck is large & sunset views are gorgeous. Mr. Donovan is a lovely man & he’s very helpful and polite in his communications.
Some things to be aware of: the house is on a septic tank. For city folks (esp. women) what that means is that nothing but natural human waste and toilet paper can be flushed down. The water is from a well & in this particular house it appears amber colored. While we were there the hot water had an awful metallic smell that we figured came from the hot water tank since the cold water did not smell like that. What that meant was that we took cold showers & it was freezing! The owners were skeptical & were going to look into it after we left but we insisted that it was looked into right away since we were going to be there for 2 weeks, but the company never did come , which we found surprising because they’re not so out in the country. We received an email from the wife after we left saying that indeed we were right because she tested it out and smelled how bad it was. She said they called the people “again” to come out & inject hydrogen peroxide into the water tank. Also the owner‘s wife is a vegan and the smell of meat cooking and wafting up through the open windows makes her feel ill based on an email she sent at 2:58 in the morning after my insomniac teenage son cooked eggs only (not meat) with the fan on. She suggested we cook meat on the barbecue outside but the husband, after we called him down to discuss this, said we could continue cooking it in the kitchen. Emails from them came almost daily asking us to do this or that in the house. Sometimes the asks were duplicated even though we did as they asked the first time. The couches are white and the covers are also white and hard to keep on so if you have small kids beware-very hard to maintain. There is no AC but while we were there, for the most part, we didn’t miss it.
Overall it’s a beautiful place & if you can deal with the owners’ plethora of email instructions and the wife’s idiosyncrasies it really is very nice! We recommend!

Lovely place to vacation
My daughter and I decided to have a last ocean/beach getaway before she heads off to college. We found this rental property, were excited by the description and pictures, and were not disappointed! We stayed in the first floor apartment and were blown away by the gorgeous views and by the beautifully and comfortably appointed apartment. We thoroughly enjoyed both our time relaxing at the house and lounging on the deck that overlooked the bay, as well as our time exploring the area. We also thoroughly enjoyed meeting the owners of the property. They were so gracious in being available to answer any questions, but also were very respectful of our privacy. We hope to return in the future.

We hope to be back!
Craig's and Francis' apartment is beautiful and so well appointed with everything we could ask for, including the kitchen for preparing light meals and the spacious bathroom facilities. The beds were comfortable and the linens were top quality . Sometimes in a rental we have not had comfortable seating but we enjoyed wonderful places to relax throughout the property. The beautiful apartment was immaculate and up to my mother's standards, and she is extremely choosy!
A final comment about our hosts...their courtesy is unobtrusive while remaing warmly welcoming and we absolutely hope to return next year!
