My family stay at a lot of places. This place was perfect for my big family. Views are great . It’s secluded! The house has everything that you need. The host was so responsive and helpful throughout the entire stay. We will stay here again.

I looked at hundreds of houses and decided on this house. I was worried about the spring water and the driveway. Neither was an issue. We grabbed a few gallons of water at the store in town. The driveway was in great shape and not steep enough to worry about it. Close to town, but feels like you are out in the wilderness. Best of both worlds. Gorgeous house. Great hot tub lounging.

Accurate listing, great views, and a wonderful outdoor fireplace!
6.0 / 10.0
First off the house is amazing, and George was responsive and helpful via text. The house is beautiful and the location deserves more stars that you can give it. That said the listing is misleading in several regards. The addresses on the listing aren’t the real address, there’s no mention of how crazy the driveway is, there’s no mention of the fact you can’t drink the water, and there’s no pool table despite the photo. I didn’t read the reviews, b/c the rating was a 4.8, so I wasn’t aware until after our booking that I needed 4WD. One person in our party had 4WD luckily bc we all got stuck and had to be towed. I’ve lived in Boone for 5 years, this isn’t inexperience of mountain roads, the driveway is steep, not steeper than normal for the area, but poorly maintained. Gravel has washed off the road and it’s basically a steep mud run with a should that falls off into a pasture and creek. If you’re an anxious person, find another house.
The house is super nice, but lots of things were broken, the back porch door handle was completely broken off, two knobs in the stove were broken, the front door was broken, one of the faucets in the kitchen, and one of the shower faucets were broken.
The hot tub was warm but the water had a funky smell and was yellowish, so despite our excitement to use it, no one did.
The listing shows a pool table/ air hockey, that doesn’t exist.
Great place to get away to, just be warned that it will be hard to access, and you can’t drink the water. Otherwise you’ll love the setting, the deer, and the gorgeous home! Despite our difficulties we would probably stay here again!

Warm and cozy home away from home, everything needed to feel as if we were at our own house, everything worked with ease, fireplace was a great touch and conversation piece, morning wake up was amazing seeing the mountains, rooms we’re comfortable and having private showers and restrooms were great!!! AAA+

Sugar Grove was exactly as advertised. It's a lovely cabin home in a secluded area, but yet close to Boone and many outdoor activities. We were able to walk up and down the hill and explore the property during our stay. You will certainly get a good glute and leg workout!
The homeowner, George, was wonderful to work with and very responsive. Any questions we had were answered promptly. Wi-fi in the home was reasonable given the area. I was able to work remotely for a few days and had no connectivity issues.
Please pay attention to the information in the description related to the private drive up to the home. It is a single lane, steep drive which requires a comfortable driver and a slow and steady pace. We were there in the fall, and although it did not rain, the drive was wet with dew and muddy in places. I recommend a 4x4 or AWD vehicle as a must in spring, fall and winter.
Overall the cabin is a bit dated, but comfortable. It does offer 3 fireplaces, but the gas log fireplace was not operational. This did not impact our stay. The kitchen was stocked, but if you need something special, I would suggest bringing it with you or buying it in Boone. There is a Walmart, Publix and Harris Teeter all within a 15–20-minute drive. We did bring a Brita water filtration system, trying to cut down on our use of plastic bottles, and that was used extensively.
Bottomline...Sugar Grove is a cabin home to be considered if visiting the Boone area. The sheer number of stars to be appreciated in the sky without light pollution is stunning and certainly worth the price of admission! My family is planning to return in 2023.

Great Location and beautiful house
We had 11 people stay for 4 nights (2 grandparents, 4 parents, 5 children 9 and under). We loved the house and isolated location. Road to property is accurately described in the listing; rough, but 4 wheel drive not needed in the summer. House is not very far from a main road as were many of the listings in the ski areas. There were a few minor things that need to be fixed, but the owner was very responsive and is planning on taking care of them. The AC went out while we were there, but owner had a repairman out very promptly and fixed it. We regularly saw deer and turkeys. Adults and kids loved the house and setting. We would definitely go back.

Horrible/Dishonest/No Communication
It does not state 4-wheel drive required or recommended. Our friends arrived 1st and their vehicle got stuck in the muddy, washed out road to the house and blew a tire. Per the recommendation of the contact, they called to get vehicle out. The man came & dragged the vehicle out to the road (no help offered to get it anywhere to be fixed) & charged X (cash only). It was getting dark quickly so the rest of the party walked up the extremely steep road to the house. I called contact and he said that he didn't feel the road was that bad and our friends probably were not use to mountain roads. (Meanwhile he is out of state) I contacted VRBO who said we could try and change to another property. (I had purchased the cancellation policy) The issue was the party was stuck on the mountain in the dark with no vehicle to get anywhere. I tried repeatedly to explain this but was completely ignored. While waiting for us to get there, they tried to order food. The delivery lady came and said there was no way she could get up that road. Now, the party was stuck at the house with no way to get any food. My husband and I got there around 11pm. We have a Tahoe. My husband gunned it and we literally were swerving and fishtailing the entire way up. When we finally got to the top, I was hyperventilating. (I grew up in WV, I am not someone who does not know the mountains) This was an unsafe, potentially deadly situation. I tried to text the contact to explain how bad the road was and he ghosted me. Because of the condition of this road, we could not safely bring our Tahoe back down. Next day we walked down the mountain & met tow truck who loaded our friend's vehicle & drove it into town to be repaired. (x + cost of repair). After the vehicle was repaired, we drove back to the bottom of the road and again walked up the mountain. We had a 68 year old veteran with us that has COPD. He barely made it up the mountain the 1st night and was stuck in the house the entire 3 days. When the kids went to play the air hockey, it fell to the ground. 3 of the legs had been broken and it had been staged to be standing. The door to the outside fireplace was broken and you couldn't use it to get outside. We had to go thru one of the bedrooms each time we went out. One bedroom had moisture on wall. While we were there it went below 0 and froze the road. We got the Tahoe down slipping & sliding on ice. One party member fell on the ice & busted her knee open on the final walk down

Annual Ski Get-Away
This property was perfect for everything that my family wanted to do. Needing a 4x4 in the winter is a must! Bring extra bath cloths because none were available and housekeeping isn't coming! George, the owner, was definitely Amazing! He stayed in communication with us until we returned home. Being a Travel Assistant, I'm very particular about booking reservations but my family was pleased! The windows were open when we arrive so make sure to check those 1st upon arrival to ensure no little critters are vacationing with you! We would stay again,

Nice Home but make sure you know about the water
This is a great property - beautiful home and view. The road up to the house is tough so strongly recommend and AWD vehicle. We did receive a message from the owner after booking that the water in the house was spring water and had never been tested so we may want to bring our own water to drink if we had concerns. While this wasn't a huge issue I do no think it should be reflected in the listing info

Peaceful, sucluded home located near Boone, Banner Elk and Blowing Rock.
Large home/cabin located conveniently between Boone, Banner Elk and Blowing Rock. The location is very quiet and peaceful. While the gravel road does have some ruts, we had no problem getting up and down during July in 2 wheel drive. We enjoyed the property very much for our family gathering.

Off the grid but still on the grid
As someone that works remotely, it was nice to feel off the grid while having all the on grid things like cable and internet.
The house was amazing and had some great views. Hot tub was nice and clean and the house was spotless.
The drive up to the house as noted in the description was a cool gravel road and rather steep and a 4x4 is almost necessary. Crazy amount of wildlife, and the grounds were wonderful.
Beds where comfortable, and the showers were nice. Having beds on all 3 floors were nice to give everyone in the group some privacy. The HVAC was super good and well balanced and all the floor and no one really felt cold or hot anywhere in the house.
Would stay again for sure.

We were looking to get away, and this place more than delivered! Even though it is close to everything Boone, Banner Elk and Valle Crucis have to offer, it truly felt like we were on a private island, with the ONLY sounds coming from nature; birds, rain drops hitting the roof and the stream running adjacent to the house. Driving up the private, winding gravel road leads to an incredible surprise coming around the last bend toward the cabin, as you have no idea where the place might be until you see it perched high atop a hill at the end of it's very own verdant valley. Upon entering the cabin you instantly feel at ease, as the views straight through the home are amazingly framed by massive windows, and we have incredible pictures of the sunrise, pink skies at sunset and even of the full moon that happened to fall on the one clear day we had.As for the home itself (dare I call it a "cabin"?), it is very well appointed throughout, and even though it spans three levels it feels cozy and warm in each and every space. Three very cool, rainy mornings sipping coffee on the covered porch were extremely relaxing, and when we did have a clear day we took full advantage of the very rare large, grassy field in front of the cabin to play in the stream and have a picnic. The kitchen has everything you need to create your meals and keep the crew caffeinated, there are plenty of board games and books, three fireplaces and, of course, the hot tub on the covered lower deck.We had a wonderful time and cannot say enough good things. Thanks very much to the owners for making this home available, and we will certainly be back.

Was looking to bring kiddos together for a weekend getaway of family time with kiddos that live all over. It was the perfect place!!! It was close enough to everything we wanted to do, but remote enough to not hear a single manmade sound...other than our own...haha. House was clean, well furnished, a very well stocked pantry and I can not begin to tell you about the views from almost every room in the house. Certain parts we a little worn, but nothing that had an impact on the stay. The owner was great and very attentive...even gave us some flexibility on checkout...forgot it was daylight savings time. Can not recommend enough and looking to return in the fall.

Can't wait to return
The cabin was wonderful for our family Christmas celebration! It is close to town, but very private. It feels so spacious - inside and outdoors, even with 11 people. Our favorite spot was the firepit by the stream. Our family was tickled by the "treasures" to be found outside, like gnome statues. The kitchen had everything we needed to make family meals and we were pleasantly surprised to find things like handsoap in each bathroom, dish soap, lighters - things we weren't sure would be stocked and had packed ourselves. The bedroom photographed with a bunkbed has been updated with two double sized beds, which worked better for our family. My family member with mobility issues was able to enjoy everything on the main level of the house and had no problem getting inside since you can pull the vehicle right up to the front door. The only trouble we ran into was with the driveway. It was muddy and it wasn't communicated to one of our family members to bring a 4-wheel drive vehicle and they struggled to get up to the house with a Honda CRV. So when the instructions say bring 4-wheel drive vehicles, make sure everyone coming knows! The owner was communicative answering any questions we had before, during, and after our stay. We are so grateful that he chooses to share his home with others and can't wait to come back!

This is a lot of information but I recommend reading everything before deciding to book because this was the worst experience I've had with a house owner. After our short 2-night stay, George, the owner, filed an insurance claim (via the damage insurance we paid for) stating there was a bedside table drawer and a kitchen drawer that needed repair. He did not email me to explain the damage or ask if it's something we had noticed before filing the claim. I received the claim details directly from the insurance company. I'm assuming George did not know I would receive this email because he also decided to keep our deposit with no explanation. We never even used our bedside table drawers and when we arrived most of the kitchen cabinets were taped shut because they were all broken. Needless to say, the damages were from normal wear and tear from his many back-to-back guests, not from our less than 48 hour trip.I emailed George 3 times saying we need to receive our deposit back, since he was getting money from the insurance company for the claimed damages. I never heard back from him. I do not normally write negative reviews but this situation has been such a headache and I do not want it to happen to another guest. George cannot be trusted with your deposit or even the decency to explain himself and/or respond to emails. He has now kept our deposit & received a large amount of money from the insurance company.A few other things about this house and our stay that are worth noting:1. The cleaners were still at the house cleaning when we arrived at 4pm to check in, so we had to wait out on the porch while they cleaned for another hour.2. There is a video camera on the bottom porch that watches the hot tub. This is so creepy. The door is locked to the room with the camera.3. The trash had not been removed from the outdoor trash cans so we had nowhere to put our trash bags when we were checking out. I emailed George asking what he'd like us to do and I never heard back from him. In fact, I didn't hear anything from him ever again...besides the automated email saying you're not getting your deposit back.I'm blown away by how sketchy George has been, and the fact that he's getting away with it. He is getting a lot of money from the insurance company (way more than it's worth) and also keeping our deposit for the same damages. If George had simply done the right thing and given us our deposit back we wouldn't have had to deal with this mess.

Amazing Views, Complete Seclusion
If you are looking to get away from it all, while still being close to local attractions, this is the place for you. The property is so secluded and private. The interior is the perfect mountain cabin but you can't beat the upper deck and outdoor fireplace. If you are interested in even better views, take the trail to the top of the mountain. It's a workout, but well worth it. I will absolutely be back in the future and I can't imagine a better combination of luxury and privacy.

Great house in it's own valley with a zen view
Excellent stay a few weeks ago at this property. House is well appointed and the view is amazing. You're nestled into a crook at the head of a steep valley with your only neighbors: deer, eagles, and hawks. Feels like your hours away from civilization when you're really only 20 mins from Boone. Heck, you're really only 10 mins from a semi-gourmet country store in Sugar Grove. As most have mentioned in comments the .5 or .6 mile road up the valley (off the main two lane street) is a doozy. However, it's exactly why it's named Raven Rock FARM Rd. It's on and through a farm. Yes, it's exceptionally steep, and washed out in a few places, but again folks, it's a farm road. If you have 4x4 or even AWD you're golden. Take your time and dodge the ruts and rocks and enjoy the scenery. A few challenges with the house: there are no thermostats upstairs so it takes awhile for the two bedrooms up there to cool off. No fan in the great room so the cool doesn't circulate well and ti takes a few hours of cooling off the main floor for the cooler air to make it s way up to the top floor. The ceiling fans help, but just know it will take awhile. They AC vent in the larger of the two bedoorm not top floor is under the bed, so to hasten cooling move the bed over about a foot or two so the air can circulate faster. Kitchen was a dream. Amazing gas stovetop and oven. Great refrigerator. Long family style table to seat your whole group. Weather was superb so we didn't spend much time in the "family room," but the remote situation was a mess. Only remote that worked was for the TV. Sound bar and other devices went unused. Plus, the TV is set so high over the fireplace not sure we'd have enjoyed looking up so much. The view from the deck on the main floor is much better than anything on TV anyway. So quiet and peaceful and zen-like. Only problem was we enjoyed that zen so much came back too relaxed to go back to work;-) Monday in the real world was brutal and wished a million times I was back there napping on the deck (though the wooden benches and chairs really need pads) napping while deer ate the clover and apples and cherries in the field below.

Ideal Spot to Unplug
This was our second time staying at It’s About Time. Our family had a wonderful 5 days at the house. The property offers total seclusion which is what we wanted. We comfortably fit 7 and the downstairs family room was the kids’ home base. The home layout is perfect for a family gathering. The TVs were never turned on - instead the boys explored, hiked to the top, found an apple tree and had many a campfire. The property was clean and check in was easy. The owner is very responsive. Overall a great vacation.

We have rented this property twice in the last year and George is always great to work with.
The property is very secluded and has a great view. We have rented the property twice during the summer months and it is a perfect spot for a family mountain getaway. The road up to the house is a little rough, but with 4 wheel drive it is not a problem, actually helps make it feel more secluded! We definitely recommend.
