About this cottage rental
Paul's Cottage is the year-round home where my father-in-law spent his retirement years. Built to resemble a New England barn, the spacious pine-paneled living room features a cathedral ceiling and a granite fireplace that is likely the largest you have ever seen!
There is a bedroom with queen size bed and newly renovated full bath on the first floor. Over the kitchen and bedroom is a loft area with a tiled shower and bedroom with a queen size bed and adjoining sitting room with a small twin bed, large closet and skylight. You will absolutely love the new dormer in the upstairs bedroom especially when you are able to look out on to Blue Hill Bay and enjoy the stars and the moon traveling across the clear dark sky. (Due to the relatively small size of the loft bedrooms we limit the total number of guests to five, including infants, no exceptions, please.)
Our kitchen is well equipped for cooking and serving, with amenities including gas cook top & oven, microwave, coffeemaker, dishwasher and breakfast table.
Mealtime is always more enjoyable with a view of the water. You can sit in front of the window in the dining area or simply go outside to use the picnic table on the deck. In the corner of the living room next to a window with a waterfront view, the landlady insisted on having a game table because she loves to play scrabble, bridge or canasta. Yes, it is a great place to use your computer and we do offer wireless internet connection for those who insist on making contact with the outside world. However, we suggest that you just sit and relax in the large wicker chairs in the living room to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. Perhaps the best thing to do after all is just step through the large sliding glass doors onto a 400 square foot deck and enjoy the panoramic view of Blue Hill Bay.
We are located between Mitchell and Duck Cove on the western side of Mount Desert Island in the coastal village of West Tremont, so you will find that the spectacular sunsets probably will take your breath away.
As one of my tenants said the minute he got out of the car, 'I think that you have a little bit of heaven here'. I do believe that he is correct. I have to say I do leave a little bit of my heart behind every time I leave Mount Desert Island.
Please come and experience the peace and quiet of your home away from home and leave your cares behind.

Best VRBO experience, hands down! The cottage is charming, clean and comfortable, and the views are amazing. I could spend the whole week just sitting out on that deck. Soft sheets and soft fluffy towels are provided, good supplies in the kitchen. The hosts are terrific! Lovely people with prompt and helpful responses. Thank you, Kathy and Jay! We can't wait to come back!

We can't say enough good things about Paul's Cottage. This was our third visit there, and we have already booked another week for next summer. The cottage is clean as a whistle and fully stocked, the view is incredible, and the property managers are gems--always available but completely respecting of privacy. The cottage is secluded and feels a world away from the bustle of Bar Harbor, but it is easy to get there and all the offerings of MDI. If there were a rating above 5 stars, we would surely give it. Thanks, Kathleen and Jay -- see you next year!

We really enjoyed our stay, the views, deck, kitchen, fireplace, and interior are amazing. Great for four people. Unfortunately, the third bedroom/bed is really unusable except for a child with parents in the adjacent room who want no privacy (the upstairs bedrooms have no door separating them and the small bedroom is really more like a closet). As a result, my adult son had to sleep on the couch in the living room. Not ideal. In addition, we recommend locking the doors when you leave.

Paul's Cottage was perfect! Immaculately maintained and very private. We could sit on the deck all day and enjoy the ever-changing views. Located on the "Quiet Side" of Mt. Desert Island, it was about a half-hour drive to Bar Harbor, but much closer to many other places of interest. Kathleen greeted us warmly, and everything was in place. We cannot wait to return!

We came from GA and TX to escape the July 4th heat! Great location and well-appointed home. We do a lot of cooking and the kitchen was well stocked, except for spices. Communication with the property owner was very good. 5 stars!

We loved the vibe and the location of the cabin! Of course the view is great and we really enjoyed the fireplace.
Kathy lives next door and was helpful and friendly. Would gladly recommend and return!

This is the second time we have stayed here, and as we get ready to leave this morning, we are already looking forward to visit #3. This is the perfect place to unwind, rain or shine, with a spectacular view in quiet surroundings and all needs met. Kathleen and Jay are gracious hosts, available when needed but never intruding. Thank you, and until next time!

Peaceful location, Splendid views!
We thoroughly enjoyed our family vacation at “Paul’s Cottage”. The location is perfect with outstanding views of the water, and so quiet! The sunsets from the deck were spectacular! A bald eagle even visited one afternoon – landing on top of a pine tree right next to the deck!
We did a lot of hiking in Acadia National Park and loved playing games, reading, or watching TV by the fire at night. There were four of us, and our two adult children ‘negotiated’ who got the single bed upstairs, but it all worked out. We cooked often and the kitchen had everything we needed. The WiFi worked well which allowed my son to do some remote work.
Our hosts were great! When a problem materialized with the oven prior to our stay they quickly fixed it so that it was available upon our arrival.
It is about a 35-minute drive from this cottage to Bar Harbor and the eastern hiking trail heads (e.g. Beehive) – so plan accordingly. Even though we stayed late in October we had 4 days of outstanding, sunny weather!

“A peaceful getaway in Beautiful Maine”
Our week stay at Paul’s cottage with our 2 friends was lovely! The location on “the quiet side” of Mt. Desert Island was perfect for a relaxing, low key vacation. The setting on the water was beautiful! We spent many hours on the expansive deck overlooking the tranquil water... morning coffee, yoga, happy hours and nighttime star gazing... magnificent! Peaceful, relaxing and fun. Combined with fires every night, a beautiful water view from the comfy loft bedroom and lots of privacy, it was perfect for 4 seniors to call home for a week. Our hosts, Kathleen and Jay, were very welcoming and Kathleen was nice enough to answer all of my questions on a phone call prior to our stay.
Kitchen was large and well stocked with everything..... which was a big plus.
We liked the location near the village of Southwest Harbor with several good restaurants, a harbor and lots of hiking trails... and only a 25 minute drive to Bar Harbor on easy back roads.
Loved our week in Maine at Paul’s Cottage!

What a gem!
Paul's Cottage was just what my husband and I were looking for - a quiet, well-kept cottage right on the water in Maine. Everything was perfect - it was sparkling clean, with an updated kitchen and comfortable bed. Hope someday to go back - perhaps to see the fall colors. Thank you Kathy and Jay!

Charming Place in a Wonderful Location
A wonderful place to relax and take in the gorgeous scenery. Perfect distance from Acadia Park - far enough to feel more isolated, but close enough to enjoy the hiking and biking trails. Fireplace was a huge bonus on a few chilly nights.

Paul's Cottage
Bill and I had a fabulous stay in Paul's Cottage! Waking up to the view of the water every morning, the fabulous star-filled sky, and a warm fire every evening made this cottage a fabulous find. We spent our days hiking in Acadia and our morning and evenings cooking in the well-equipped kitchen at the cottage. Kathy and Jay were wonderful hosts and we would gladly stay here again. Truly lovely!

Our favorite rental of all time!
If we could have only stayed ONE MORE WEEK!! This takes the #1 spot as "favorite rental" we've stayed in as a family. The location was exceptional ... right on the water. We loved watching the lobster boats in the morning, hearing the sound of the water hitting rocks, and seeing the fog roll in and out. And the house was just adorable .. everything you'd hope for in an authentic Maine cottage. We also loved being just 30 minutes to Acadia and even closer to great hiking and swimming options. It's an ideal spot for a family vacation. Quiet and serene, but close to so many recreational opportunities. The owners live right next door, which provides peace of mind when visiting such a wonderfully remote part of Maine. We highly recommend!!

Quiet side treasure
A perfect space- the cottage itself and where it sits, the deck overlooking the bay. The girls loved climbing around on the rocks. Easy travel to Acadia trails, great pizza and lobster minutes away. We can’t thank you enough!

Amazing Fireplace & Water View
This is a great house with a wonderful view. The wood paneling, enormous fireplace, and little details give the place a great vibe.
In July we were able to have a fire every night. The daily high never exceeded 70 degrees.
The box spring in the master bedroom was broken at the time of our visit so keep in mind the bed squeaks with the slightest movement. Additionally, the sheets and towels throughout the house are old and worn.
The TV is newer and bigger than what's pictured in the photos I saw with several cable channels. There's good wi-fi if you need to stay connected.
Due to cleaning concerns around COVID be mindful that check-out is 9 am and sheets and towels need to be put in the wash before departure. There is flexibility around this if you don't have time to get it all going.

A Perfect Escape
When I began working from home unexpectedly, my husband and I decided to decamp to the country for an extended retreat. We quickly settled on Paul’s Cottage, and I gotta say, what providence!
The reservation process was seamless and easy, and within a week of making our reservation we were pulling up to the cottage. The first impression does not disappoint. The house is perched at the edge of a sloped cliff just a few short feet from the water, much closer than would be possible today, under current setback requirements. The view over the water is unobstructed, other than by a couple of majestic spruce trees that only serve to enhance it. There are other houses to each side, but they are not really visible through the trees; they definitely will not disturb hour solitude.
It was the perfect place to quarantine, which is what we did for the first two weeks we were there. Jay and Kathy are consummate hosts. I hesitate to describe all they did for us, because I don’t think they should be expected to deliver pizzas, make grocery runs, smoke chickens, and provide homemade cookies and granola to every guest.
But I am confident that you will find them as gracious hosts as we did.
Everything was closed while we were there, so we did all our cooking in the cottage. The kitchen is fully stocked with utensils and appliances, and we didn’t want for anything. We were even able to source live lobsters (with Jay and Kathy’s help) to celebrate our anniversary!
I was working throughout our stay there, so I had to take a leap of faith regarding the internet connection and strength of cell phone signal, but there were no issues. The internet connection was even better than it is at home.
We made a fire almost every night; we went through a lot of wood! There is no more peaceful feeling than sitting by the fire, and taking little breaks to step out onto the porch to check out the full moon and listen to the water lap against the shore.
I could go on and on, but the simple fact is it was everything we needed at the exact moment we needed it, and we are very grateful. We will be back. Our only complaint is that we never saw the bald eagle.

Christmas on the Coast
This was the most relaxing Christmas and I owe it to Paul's Cottage and Kathy and Jay. They were excellent hosts and the cabin is right on the water. So relaxing being able to hear and see the water 24/7. Thank you!

Perfect getaway
We had a wonderful stay at Paul's Cottage. Kathleen and Jay make sure every need is met; they strike the perfect balance between being available and respecting privacy. The views from the cottage are gorgeous, and the cottage itself is clean and comfortable. We wanted to return next August but it is already booked!

Tucked Away Gem
My family of 5 had a WONDERFUL time staying at Paul’s Cottage last week. It’s on tucked away waterfront on the ‘quietside’ If MDI. The view from the deck is spectacular, peaceful and private. We drove each day to the various activities- near Great Long Pond (20 min) and Jordon Pond (30) and Bar Harbor (35) etc. All very easy to get to.
The house was charming, cozy and felt secluded. Very comfortable for our family of 5. Two parents, daughters 12 and 5, son 11. It’s got the old fashioned pine look of a wonderful Maine cottage w the modern conveniences of an updated kitchen, bathrooms. We didn’t use the fireplace, but I’m sure it would be even more cozy if we had or wanted to. Plenty of wood was ready and stacked. The deck (or even the lower rocks) is nice to sit out on to enjoy the view (sunsets are spectacular). Small lobster boats come daily to check pots. Once dark, we enjoyed being able to spread out inside to play games, eat etc. View from the Master is the real-deal. Lovely to wake up to each morning.
Kathleen came by the first day and was very helpful w recommendations for places to go, eat. Very nice and responsive.
It was a great week, hope to be able to go back to Acadia and MDI next year!

Peaceful, beautiful cottage
We enjoyed a week in Paul’s Cottage, a lovely traditional cottage with a well-equipped kitchen, comfy beds, high-quality linens and towels, and a large deck with a lovely view of Blue Hill Bay on the quiet side of MDI. The owners live next door and will respond quickly to any questions or problems, but will also respect your privacy. The location is close to Bass Harbor (and the fabulous Thurston’s Lobster Pound) and to Southwest Harbor. If you want, you can easily reach Bar Harbor and farther reaches of Acadia, including the Loop Road. But this cottage allows you to kick back and enjoy the island without the crowds if that’s your preference. A lovely place!

Amazing Stay at Paul's Cottage!
The two of us spent a week at Paul's cottage earlier this month and to say it was amazing would be an understatement! We so enjoyed it and didn't want to leave this wonderful place!
Most of the time, when we're up here we stay in Bar Harbor, but this year we decided to stay on the quite side and we're so happy we did!
The cottage was perfect and had everything we could possibly need! It's rustic, roomy and comfy. The water views were just INCREDIBLE!! We slept in the upstairs bedroom that looks over the water and were lulled to sleep by the peaceful sounds and wonderful smell of the sea every night.
The whole week was so nice, quiet and relaxing!
Usually when we're in the Bar Harbor area we blow and go a lot, but this time we found ourselves wanting to just stay home, sit on the deck and enjoy the cottage and the view! We saw loons, eagles and (of course!) lobster boats.
Kathy and Jay were great; we enjoyed chatting with Kathy. We didn't need anything, but they let us know if we did that they were right there! They are right next door, but you would never know it as there is plenty of privacy.
And cell phone service and internet were excellent too!
We hope to come back to this little slice of Heaven again someday!

Private, cozy, charming, and close to everything.
We had a wonderful week at Paul's Cottage! As stated, the house is rustic yet extremely clean and comfortable. It has spectacular views of the water, and if you're sure-footed, you can walk down from the house to sit on the rocks. It is close to Southwest Harbor, where you can find lots of restaurants and stores. The drive to Bar Harbor is 30 minutes.
The cottage felt very roomy for the four of us. Note that the upstairs has one full bedroom (gorgeous, with big windows that look over the water), a small full bathroom, and then a small area that contains a single bed. I would not call this small area a bedroom, but it is room enough for one person to sleep and be someone private.
The kitchen is well-equipped, the laundry room fully functional, and the large downstairs room is lovely. It was quite warm when we visited in July/Aug, so we never got to use the amazing fireplace, although there was ample firewood if we wanted to do so.
The outside deck is spacious, with four chairs that allow you to take in the amazing view. The only criticism is that there is no grill on the deck. There is a small charcoal grill near the side door of the cottage, but it is very small, old and dirty. In my opinion, the owners should purchase a gas grill and place it on the deck.
The owners were communicative, and even though they live next door, they allowed our family perfect privacy.
Since it was very warm and humid when we visited in July/Aug, the cottage was quite warm inside on certain days. There are lots and lots of screened windows and a screened sliding door, so on those days when a breeze blew in from the water, the house cooled down considerably. But when there was no breeze, it was a bit uncomfortable. There is no air conditioning at the house, and there is one small ceiling fan in the main room that really doesn't move the air sufficiently. Since the fan is installed in such a high vaulted ceiling, and the room is so large, the owners should consider installing a much larger fan to accommodate the room size.

Beautiful and very quiet area. Incredible views. About 30 minutes from Bar Harbor and that's ok. Laundry facility is a bonus. Would stay again.

Another Wonderful Stay
This was our 2nd stay at Paul's Cottage. We had (3) adults and (2) children and had plenty of living space. The owners are easy to communicate with and once you arrive they take care in making sure you have what you need. We like to cook in most meals and have found the kitchen to be well equipped. The best part is dining on the deck as well as enjoying your morning coffee or evening glass of wine while taking in the sunset. The upstairs bedroom faces the water so you can go to sleep hearing the lapping of the water and wake up to a beautiful view over the water. This part of MDI is referred to as the "quiet side" and at Paul's you will hear the gulls, lobster boats, water crashing against the rocks and little else!

So restful and relaxing...a bit of heaven from our hectic lives!
After several evenings of googling out of the way places to stay, my husband and I decided on Paul’s Cottage. This rustic - but very modernized - cottage was perfect! We were able to view the rugged Maine coastline from the living room, upstairs bedroom, and deck!
Kathleen met us when we arrived, escorted us through the cottage, answered our questions, and left us to get settled, with the reminder to call her if we needed anything at all. It was reassuring to us to know she was close if we needed her; but we appreciated her efforts to respect our privacy.
We ate simple breakfasts with our coffee or hot tea, even simpler lunches, and drove to a different restaurant every evening for dinner.
The evening before we left, we both decided that the HUGE fireplace in the living room was the best inside feature, and, of course, the view of the ocean front was the outside feature we had a hard time leaving. We were able to enjoy cozy fires inside almost every night, as the temperature was in the 40’s every evening. (We left Home and returned home to much warmer temps.)
If you are looking for a rustic, cozy cottage along a remote section of rugged coastal Maine, then you must reserveaul’s Cottage!

A very special time away in paradise!
My wife and I have stayed at Paul's cottage twice now and we will definitely be returning. We go in the winter, when things are really quiet and gorgeous. The house is amazing. The bedroom is very comfortable and it is so nice looking down at the beautiful large burning fire from the loft area. The family room is just perfect and the kitchen has everything you could want to cook and feel like home. (We cook lobsta every night), You will not be disappointed.

Beautiful Ocean Views
The cottage sits right on the ocean front on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island - roomy, well decorated and maintained. It has a lovely patio with table and chairs that are great for morning coffee, evening sunsets, or any time in between. Both the patio and cottage have great ocean views that give a really peaceful feeling. Beach access at mid to lower tides. We had a great time cycling, kayaking, and hiking. We love our Colorado home but it doesn't have the ocean access that you do here. You're a 5 minute drive from a lobster pound (Thurston's), 10 minutes from the restaurants, market and shops in SW Harbor, and 30 minutes from Bar Harbor (a good distance if you want access to Bar Harbor but want to stay away from the crowds). A nice kitchen allows you to cook many of your meals at the cottage (including lobsters of course) and save money versus eating all of your meals at restaurants if you want. There are several good sources around for very fresh seafood to cook at the cottage. The owners next door are supportive and friendly without being intrusive. We will definitely look forward to coming back, highly recommended!

Beautiful location and quintessential Maine coastline setting.
Paul's cottage feels like my own private vacation home in a quintessential Maine setting. My husband and I have vacationed on Mount Desert Island for many years staying closer to Bar Harbor but three years ago we discovered Seaside Cottages and will return again this summer for our third stay. Paul's cottage is our favorite and has a beautiful waterfront setting on the “quiet side” of Mount Desert Island with an easy drive to Acadia National Park, Southwest Harbor, and Bar Harbor. We love eating breakfast and dinner on the deck or just relaxing with a good book while overlooking Blue Hill Bay watching sailboats, lobster boats and the occasional bald headed eagle and osprey. The cottage provides easy access for walks along the rocky shoreline and up-close views other shore birds. The large living room has a huge stone fireplace and is very attractive and comfortable with great views of the water through the wall of windows and it is a great place to sit and read should you get a rainy day. The upstairs bedroom also has an amazing view of the water. The cottage is very well equipped and the grounds are secluded and quiet yet within a short drive to great restaurants, museums, Acadia Repertory Theatre, botanical gardens, boat tours out of Northeast Harbor, and the National Park. Kathy the owner is very easy to work with and has her own private home on the property should you need her.

Wonderful Cottage on the Quiet Side
We have been to Paul's Cottage twice and have loved it each time. It is right on the cliffs overlooking the bay and the sunsets are spectacular. The cottage is furnished with everything you could need and if something is missing Kathy the owner is nearby and ready to help. Southwest Harbor has several good restaurants so you can avoid the crush of Bar Harbor if you desire. This quiet side of the island is wonderful and we would recommend it anyone visiting Mount Desert Island.
