For the adventurous traveler seeking authentic Hawaiian beauty and serenity, you can spend your whole vacation here gazing out over the endless ocean and its incredible sunsets. In the winter, you can spot whales breaching from your outdoor lanai or listen to them singing at night. Awaken to the music of colorful birdsong from papaya, mango and banana trees.
With a perfect year-round climate, perched at 1200 ft. above the sea on the side of Mauna Loa Volcano, Makalani Oceanview Cottage is authentic Hawai'i unspoiled by crowds and resorts. From your cottage you are just 4-minutes from the closest beach and 15-minutes to Ho'okena Beach State Park for sunbathing and swimming with dolphins. A 20-minute drive brings you to the famous Pu'uhonua o'Honaunau (Place of Refuge) National Historic Park and Kealakekua Bay where you can kayak to Captain Cook's monument and snorkel with an endless variety of tropical fish and sea turtles. And best of all, you're only 65-minutes from Madame Pele's live action at Volcanos National Park.
Your cottage is tastefully appointed with Indonesian teak furniture providing a romantic comfort reminiscent of Colonial British tropics. Your large open-room (studio) cottage sleeps two luxuriously with a romantic king-size canopy-bed with a memory-foam mattress fit for royalty. There is also a convertible couch-futon which can comfortably sleep two additional guests. You'll have a fully-equipped kitchen as well as dining area for four. A large outdoor lanai with barbeque gives you garden seating with a stunning ocean view. Your detached private bathroom with semi- outdoor shower will provide a refreshing Hawaiian experience with nature.
There is also a detached guestroom/meditation room available which is set in a grove of mango trees overlooking the ocean, called the 'Mango Grove Lookout'. It has a sofa-futon which can comfortably sleep one or two people. Serene and magical, this special extra-room provides daytime privacy as well as an intimate camp-like Hawaiian sleeping experience.
Managed with aloha spirit, Makalani Oceanview Cottage is the perfect vacation/retreat cottage where you'll find yourself surrounded by the natural beauty of Hawaii.
We hope your stay here will be the first of many happy vacations to South Kona and this beautiful island of Hawaii.

We loved staying here! The evening views were awesome and the host is very responsive and helpful.

The home overlooks the ocean and it is a comfortable elevation so it just about ideal temperatures. We enjoyed the separation from the hustle of downtown and the country feel of Captain Cook area. Property was beautiful and comfortable, host was warm and friendly. This was a great stay, we enjoyed our time here thoroughly.

Many thanks to Harry for the gracious hospitality. The location was scenic, quiet and off grid but with good accommodations. On site laundry facilities and more efficient internet Wi-Fi would have been ideal. Driving 18 miles to do laundry was not in the property description when first considering the property. Overall the stay was great. Many thanks again!

Very private tropical location, all the amenities plus extras for borrowing while being away from the property. Drive to town takes a while but being close to town not important to us. Owner friendly and helpful with suggestions. Enjoyed the view, privacy, instant hot water for shower, and geckos :).

Tucked into a beautiful tropical garden is a guest cottage with a large four poster bed, a patio with ocean views, and a separate bathroom that gives you the experience of living in the jungle while having all the comforts of home. The separate ‘Mango Hut’ for additional guests is a lovely little space with great views of the ocean and Kona coast. Watch the sun set and listen to birds, frogs and the occasional rooster. All the sounds of Hawaii! Everything was perfect, Harry is a very friendly host and we enjoyed the garden tour! Will be returning on our next visit to the Big Island.

We absolutely loved our time spent off the beaten path at the cottage. It was a good location to explore the Captain Cook area and to do things outside of Kona.

Checking in was easy and we found the cottge very clean. We don't cook much beyond breakfast and snacks but the kitchen was well-equipped for any meal you might want to prepare. The property is beautifully landscaped and the view facing west makes for spectacular sunsets. The rural location is peaceful and quiet. The mattress was very comfortable, and the bedding was high-quality. Ample fluffy towels were available. Harry provides everything you might want for quality beach-adventures, so that is a great benefit. We traveled with a friend, and she loved having her own private space in the mango grove meditation room. The view from the meditation hut is even more expansive than the view from the lanai! I would say this property is perfect for 3 adults, or two adults and a couple of older kids. The property is remote, and the driveway is kind of hard to see, so I would suggest scheduling your arrival before dark, if you decide to stay here. Harry is the perfect host. He is friendly and available, but not at all intrusive. We would love to stay here again when we visit south Kona.

Harry's place exceeded our expectations! As we drove in, it looked like we were entering a botanical garden. I took dozens of photos the first evening of sunset, and the porch was the perfect place to do that. There were lovely bouquets set around the bungalow and bathroom to welcome us. We cooked in or barbecued every evening to enjoy the ambience. We enjoyed glasses of wine on the outbuilding's porch overlooking the ocean and listening to the coqui frogs and roosters. This was my first experience with a separate bathroom, shower facility but it was as comfortable as could be with modern plumbing and plenty of hot water. A couple times we got to visit with Harry and truly enjoyed his knowledge of volcanic history and other stories as he left the mainland years ago. We look forward to a future stay and hope that can be soon! Thank you, Harry, for sharing your beautiful home.

Thanks Harry for an amazing stay in your jungle retreat. My husband and I were amazed at the truly incredible sunsets and gorgeous views outside every window. To be immersed in nature so totally was rejuvenating. Even the drive down to the cabin was absolutely stunning. Thanks for your suggestions on local beaches and use of snorkeling/beach equipment, so handy! You were an amazing host. Much Mahalo!

We did not complete our stay. Left early due to unforeseen conditions. Harry was kind enough to quickly refund us for the remainder of our trip

This is a great little cottage. We enjoyed exploring big Hawaii from this base. We drove around the entire island and this was the perfect spot to come back to. The extra flippers, cooler, beach mat and beach umbrella were perfect for day trips. Would highly recommend it.

I could go on and on about how beautiful the location is, how great the owner is and how great the cottage is but one of my favorite features was the beach stuff provided! Coolers, chairs, umbrellas, towels, snorkel gear - all available. What a game changer! We packed charcuterie and searched out remote beaches for quiet picnics and snorkeling. Having beach gear was a huge plus!

As much fun as visiting the island was, the best part was coming “home” to Makalani Oceanview and the beautiful setting.

I must say that this was a treat to stay here. A very beautiful setting. Lots of natural beauty. The Mango hut was a perfect accommodation for our adult son....gave him space and privacy. Harry is a really helpful and welcoming host. Thanks so much.....

A great place to stay. Relaxing. Lots of extras to use: coolers, beach chairs and umbrella, lotions, bug spray, well stocked spices, etc. Good communication throughout the process. Would return in a heartbeat.

We enjoyed our stay. Harry, the host, was very responsive and accommodating. We loved the sounds of the frogs at night and the fresh air in our space. My daughter was a bit scared of the geckos, but we came to appreciate them because they ate the plentiful mosquitoes. My only complaint was that the space was not as clean as I expected. It was fine and acceptable, but not amazing. Overall, it was a pleasant stay.

Beautiful landscape with unobstructed ocean view. Feral pigs , asian pheasants and Hawaiian chickens were entertaining. We snorkelled almost every day in February when it was raining everywhere but Kona. Harry, the owner/host, was very helpful and accomodating.

Wonderful experience! If you are looking for peace and quiet this is perfect. Our favorite was the outdoor shower and the view!
Lots of amenities provided made our stay nice also. The book with recommendations was also very helpful!

My husband and I stayed here for a relaxing getaway. The cottage is nestled in a lush garden that is very private with all kinds of nature sounds that will either lull you asleep or may keep you up. If the sounds keep you up, earplugs are provided. The sunsets are AMAZING and if you get up early, you may catch the full moon shining down on the ocean. The studio is laid out very nicely and is well stocked. We loved the outdoor bathroom, and there is lots of hot water. The place is very traditional Hawaiian-like, which is what we were looking for. The book of info Harry provides is great. Hookena State Park has great boogie boarding and snorkeling. Beach stuff is provided at the cottage. The only bad thing was the amount of mosquitoes which made it difficult to enjoy the outside space. If mosquitoes look at you like an all-you-can-eat buffet, stock up on replant before getting to the cottage.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Makalani Oceanview Cottage. The location is magical and the cottage is delightful. We especially loved the shower hut! Much care & creativity by the warm & thoughtful host Harry - fresh flower arrangements throughout, comfy furnishings, playful Indonesian art, beautiful light, lush gardens, mesmerizing views, happy sounds of nature all day. We stayed four nights which gave us one full day to simply relax at the cottage and two days to explore nearby beaches. The cottage is stocked with everything needed for a comfortable stay. Harry provides excellent guidance on what to bring, where to shop & eat, the best beaches, and directions. Very private & sweetly romantic!

Lovely little cottage in lush surroundings. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will return sometime soon. Harry is a delight to with, unfortunately he was away while we were there so we didn’t get to meet him. Loved the gecko's, mosquito’s not so much.

We had looked at the reviews and we had high expectations and we have been fully satisfied. The cottage consists in one big room, cleverly divided, so it almost looks like 2 rooms. Bathroom is in an adjacent small building. There is a separate additional small cottage that we did not use but we much enjoyed its deck. The view is very beautiful. Privacy is good. The rental seems to be in a wet spot of the island, we had several afternoon showers during our stay (even the center of Captain Cook, 15 miles north, looks dryer). The reward is a beautiful tropical vegetation. Some days, it has been hard to get things dry. From the cottage one has good access to the south beaches and the owner provides good information. For going north of Kona, to the Kohala beaches, going through Kona is a pain. At any rate, one has to drive for everything. There is almost no noise from the highway. Communications with the owner have been easy and pleasant. When possible, considering the rental schedule, the owner spontaneously proposes a late check out, which is very nice.
We stayed 9 nights and we certainly wish to stay again at that place.

Beautiful cottage, felt like what you would want in Hawaii. Never was hot even though open air. Even the view from the shower was gorgeous. The driveway entrance was a little rough with the rental sedan bottoming out twice. Would definitely recommend this cottage.

Our stay at the Makalani Cottage was better than we could have ever imagined. We wanted to fully check out of civilization and experience the nature of the Big Island, and this small, charming cottage with separate meditation hut situated in a remote, private part of the Big Island was simply perfect! It was clean and well stocked with all things a visitor would need for their stay on the island, from snorkeling gear to mosquito repellents to Hawaii guide books to beach chairs to beach towels to sun screen, you name it. The owner also provided a booklet that contained all kinds of helpful information about best beaches to visit, best snorkeling spots, best places to eat, and general information about the island. The kitchen had just what we needed to make simple meals, and the seating area and main bed were very comfortable. We absolutely loved the ocean views from the cottage, and especially enjoyed our mornings on the lanai of the small meditation hut, with ocean view, grove of over 100 year old mango trees, and the gecko show in the morning on the palm tree in front of the lanai. The owner had many personal touches which made us feel so welcomed, from a welcome note to flower arrangements made from plants and flowers from the garden throughout cottage, meditation hut and outdoor bathroom, to little notes throughout the house to help us know how things worked throughout the cottage. And while we were a little hesitant about having an outdoor bathroom (separate building from cottage and walls mostly screens), it was perfectly fine even in the middle of the night, very clean with a great shower with lots of hot water. There is A LOT of life at the Cottage, Coqui frogs (three visited us personally while in the shower), bull frogs, chickens, all kinds if birds, saw an owl, some pigs, a millipede, and so much more, which we loved as part of our goal to be immersed in Hawaii nature. We only saw one person the whole time we were there, the owner who stopped by to make sure everything was ok. It was a wonderful place to start our days and come back to after long days adventuring all over the island. Overall, one of the best places we have ever stayed, our own private slice of Heaven on the Big Island of Hawaii. We plan to return to the cottage for a longer stay in the near future, we loved it that much. Mahalo to the owner for creating such a peaceful, beautiful place to stay...

The house was even more amazing than I had expected! It was tucked away in a tropical garden where we were surrounded by beautiful sounds of the rainforest. Harry provided everything we could have needed, including tips on places to go and try. My kids are 8 and 10 and they loved exploring around the house and having their own place to sleep in. I would highly recommend this place!

One of the most relaxing spots I've stayed in a very long time
An absolutely beautiful cottage nestled in the middle of a botanical garden, with an overlook of the ocean. What's not to love? The sounds of nature lulled me to sleep, there was not a single person that interrupted our peace and quiet once we got there, which is exactly what we were looking for after 10 days in Waikiki. Harry's suggestions on beaches and sights was right on and conveniently written up in a book left on the dining table. His well written instructions made not only the cottage ready to find, but also any places mentioned in his guide. The only regret I have is that I didn't take the time to ask Harry what were the names of all those plants.

Fantastic getaway
We loved this place! It was so secluded that we only saw one person one time all week and that was the owner Harry. He just dropped check on things and then was his way. We didn't need anything from him but he was a phone call away and I'm sure he would have been there for anything we might need. The place was perfect for me and my wife and had everything we needed. We would definitely stay here again!

Beautiful Sunsets & Peace
Harry's place was gorgeous, luxurious(from tasteful furnishings to silky soft sheets & well laundered towels/linens) and peaceful. Also very private and close to nature. Exactly what I needed for my solo retreat: morning coffee & meditation at the mango hut, incredible sunsets, and wonderful hot showers at night.
Harry is a responsive and gracious host and gives total privacy at all times. Even though he lives on the property you don't see or hear him at all, but he's right there if needed. He repaired something that broke during my stay the same day! Highly recommend this place for anyone in search of exquisite Island beauty and peace far away from the crowds and touristy resorts, but with 5 star amenities/furnishings and views!!

Beautiful sunset
A peaceful, romantic place to stay. Respecting that you are staying in a tropical climate and it rains a lot here and damp at night while sleeping, (granted we were there in winter when it is more rainy). Wonderful, peaceful place to stay. Owner was great to work with.

Tropical Elegance
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at this down to earth, tropical, and elegant cottage. It was extremely private and spacious. We enjoyed sunset suppers at the dining room table with views of the ocean. The grounds were like a tropical botanical garden. We keep Harry's personalized note-card on our table at home to remind us of an uplifting and heavenly time, now that we're back home and sheltering in place in Washington state.. Harry makes you feel like his personal guests.
