With a large table & bench seating, plus a breakfast bar, there's space for everyone to be together. Perfect for couples or families.

- Wireless Internet
- Ultra High Definition TV with Apple TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and more!

We love Hilo and the authentic old-Hawaii vibe it breathes but if you are looking for white sand beaches and Stepford wives neighborhoods, this is probably not the right place for you to stay. Plantation era houses were built in the 1960’s and while ours has been lovingly maintained and updated, there are still parts that are original. Some houses and areas in Hilo are in need of a little TLC including a few houses in our neighborhood. If this is something that will impact how you experience Hawaii, then it may be wise to consider a resort instead. But if you are looking for adventure, real Hawaiian experiences, fun new journeys to amazing destinations, we have that in abundance.
Each room has high powered fans. Combine this with the nice Hawaiian breeze and there is no need for air conditioners.
Hilo is authentic Hawaii. Beaches, shopping, great restaurants, waterfalls and hiking are all within a few minutes drive from Hale Lani. You can also access helicopter and boat tours in various spots around Hilo. If you have a car, you can reach Volcanoes National Park to the south or Mauna Kea to the northwest in about an hour. A massive mall and shopping center are just around the corner from us - you can walk there it is so close! We think our place is the perfect spot to Stay, Play and enjoy Aloha!
We love Hilo and the authentic old-Hawaii vibe it breathes. Plantation era houses were built in the 1930’s and while ours has been lovingly maintained and updated, a few houses in our neighborhood need a little TLC. If you are looking for adventure, real Hawaiian experiences, fun new journeys to amazing destinations at a budget price, then this is the perfect place for you! As our house is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, we ask our guests to show the aloha spirit to those around them by keeping noise levels to a minimum and by respecting Hawaiian culture. There may be other guests in the upstairs portion of our home, so we ask each of our guests to practice aloha and respect the privacy of each space. No smoking is allowed in or around our home.
If you are in need of additional space or planning to stay with a large group or family, please consider renting both portions of the house together - you can find that listed under Ohana Means Family. Welcome the Aloha Spirit and the vibe behind Stay, Play Aloha!

Cute place! Thank you!

Very clean and modern. All appliances worked (not the case with our previous rental). Laundry facilities with detergent are a huge plus. Nice great room for gatherings. Good location, convenient to most places. The frogs didn't bother us the slightest. Nice book with good information about where to go to eat, what to see, etc.

We loved our stay here. Clean and comfortable, and clear instructions and communication with property owners. So relaxing, and very welcoming.

My husband and 2 young boys stayed at this home for a few nights. Since there was space, the kids opted to have their own rooms. They enjoyed exploring the back yard and spotting lizards and geckos.
The kitchen had everything we needed, including a coffee grinder. Loved having a washing machine to use after all the beach days. There was soap, shampoo and body wash in the bathroom and plenty of towels for several days. The house even has beach towels to use!
Note: If you are bothered by noises at night, be aware that the frogs are loud. You may need to use the ear plugs the hosts thoughtfully provide. I was able to sleep without issue, but my husband had a hard time.

We stayed here for two weeks and loved everything about the place! The beautiful lanai, the spacious backyard, and the proximity to beaches/downtown/the gym/the volcano. The kitchen is stocked with everything you need and the laundry room even has snorkeling gear you can borrow! We are coming back next year and definitely want to stay here again. Owners were wonderful and easy to communicate with. 100% recommended!

My wife and I stayed here with our teenage son and three of his friends. The vacation rental was clean and offered a good amount of space for us including an outdoor area. The location is close to Hilo town, the airport, Rainbow Falls, Hilo Bay, supermarkets and shopping. Communication with the owner Shauna was quick and easy. I appreciated thoughtful touches like extra outlets and charging ports at each bedside, a blackboard suggesting favorite beaches and restaurants, and an Apple TV to stream or airplay to. I’d stay here again.

It was the perfect spot for us and location was good to get to all of the things we wanted to see and do. Really appreciated the restaurant and things to do suggestions - we did most of them! Especially enjoyed Pineapples restaurant and Jackie Rey's. Highlight of the visit was Volcano National Park. Also had a fun tour of the Lavahola Chocolate Farm.

Our group had a great time staying here. The location was very convenient to stores, restaurants, and the main highway to Volcanoes National Park and the Akaka Falls. Clean, updated, well stocked, homey. The washer/dryer was a handy bonus. Although the house doesn't come with AC, the windows & fans in every room kept us cool. We all agreed we would stay again, and recommend it to anyone.

This place had more space than we needed but it was great to spread out. They left earplugs by each bed so we expected it to be noisy, but we slept fine without them. We had some noisy neighbors upstairs but they were not as loud after the first night. There was a coffee pot but no filters so we bought some and left them there. We liked staying in a neighborhood off the beaten path and the recommendation to eat at Pineapples was a good one!

It was a great experience that we could share a place that still felt like a staycation with family from the mainland. Very peaceful and able to reflect on my husband’s celebration of life. So grateful... Mahalo nui loa!!

Hale Mala was a great place for our week of work and play. We stayed during Covid (no interisland quarantine at that time), so there were many places that were closed or with shorter hours. Hale Mala is located close to downtown Hilo which made it easy to drive to the farmer's market, shopping or the beach. On the weekend we took longer drives to the volcano and to Pahoa. The kitchen also had all the utensils, dishes, pots and pans that we need to cook and eat with. It was a relaxing and enjoyable stay!

We were looking for a place to stay in Hilo that would allow room for me to study and for my fiancé to be able to move around comfortably without disturbing my study time. This property fit our needs given there was only 2 of us.. This property seems it could easily accommodate about 8-10 people, however, there is only one bathroom facility, which was very small for its capacity. Personally, I feel that if there was more than 2 of us, using the restroom facilities would have been an issue. Other than that, the home was clean, spacious, close to grocery stores, very simple and clutter free.

Good place to stay
The downstairs unit is clean and bigger than expected. We appreciated the amenities in the kitchen and bathroom. The location was good, very close to stores and easy access to the major roads. The neighborhood is quaint and mainly quiet except for the coqui frogs and roosters. We expected noise from the coqui frogs but didn’t know about the roosters until we arrived and read the house manual. They provide ear plugs which we didn’t use because it didn’t bother us much. We used the fans and had no problem with being uncomfortable with the temperature during our stay.
We had a small issue and contacted the owners; they were very responsive which we greatly appreciated. I would recommend updating the lighting to be brighter in the kitchen and family room, the light was just too dull for us. Overall, we liked our stay here.

Great for UH Hilo parents
The location was a block away from UH Hilo and from Walmart, the mall, gas stations, Ross'. It's a great location, Hilo is very small anyways. The house is just as pictured, very pretty. There is NO AC however. It was very humid and hot when we stayed in August, but there was one extra fan in the laundry room which we snatched up. Too bad there weren't any more for my other family members. The fans were good enough and extra cold showers. We are from Hawaii so we wanted to cook rice, but there was not rice cooker, but we always look on the positive side and started our starch free diet early! LOL! I would definitely stay here again when visiting my son in Hilo, it's roomy and comfortable. I would recommend other beaches instead of Richardson or Carlsmith. Onekahakaha beach park was beautiful and more of a beach, there's also an ice cream truck there. Also take advantage of Kawamoto's pool, it has a diving board! Definitely eat at Kenichi's! That's a winnah! AND Hawaiian Style Cafe! If you know Waimea you know it's GOOD! Thanks again!

Stay in Hilo
Great house in a nice, quiet neighborhood in Hilo. The house is very short drive to all the great sites in Hilo.
The property owner also goes the extra mile to ensure you have a great stay. She immediately responds to any questions/emails one could possibly have and provides great info regarding things to do and see I Hilo.
I would definitely recommend this property to anyone wanting to visit Hilo.

The location and accommodations were just what we needed. Our 'ohana enjoyed the indoors and outdoors of Hale Mala. Shauna is a great host and responded quickly to our requests. We will definitely use Hale Mala again when we have family events in Hilo!
