Bow Cottage is situated in the delightful town of Fordwich in Kent, one of the Cinque ports and the smallest, English town. It is a most comfortable cottage, bright, well equipped, and ideal for people who want a place both in the country and near to the historic town of Canterbury.
There are two dining pubs in the town, one boasting a Michelin Star and the other providing a good quality ‘click & collect’ lunch service. Local facilities include hiring canoes, kayaks and pleasure boats, as well as wild swimming for those sufficiently courageous to do so.
Numerous walks criss cross the marshlands surrounding the Stour River and are well signed for those wishing to explore the area on foot. However, only a short drive from Fordwich one can visit the Tate at Margate, the charming Dickensian resort of Broadstairs, the great castles at Deal and Dover, or other of the Cinque ports, such as Sandwich, which hosts the Open Golf Championship every few years.
The greatest praise, however, is reserved for our hostess who has welcomed us with warmth and flexibility in these grim, COVID times. As we await our second vaccine dosage, she has made our stay at Bow Cottage an interim ‘home’ where we can relax and recuperate after the winter months of lockdown and say our farewells to a beautiful part of Kent.

Our second time at this lovely cottage this year! The perfect place as a base for walking with your dog. Go to the top of the lane next to the cottage for loads of walks in the woods and around the lakes. Great pub food at the local pub and Lois, the owner, is a sweetheart!

Bow Cottage
We stayed at Bow Cottage for a week in between moving houses and what a lovely relaxing week it was. It was so homely & comfortable and we settled in very quickly. Lots of character to the cottage and fabulous artwork everywhere. Beautiful small well-kept private garden which we enjoyed sitting out in to eat and have coffee etc. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything you could possibly need and more! Lovely bathroom with great shower. Very comfortable beds in both rooms. This cottage has everything you will ever need!
We couldn’t park on the street outside but we really appreciated the private parking space available behind the cottage. I would say that the traffic going through Fordwich & past the cottage is quite busy so it was very loud outside day and night. Unfortunately it disturbed our little boy’s sleep too much, especially cars with very loud music. We’re not used to it but it might not be an issue for some.
I can highly recommend the George & Dragon pub. Family friendly with lovely food and garden by the river. We also visited Herne Bay & Whitstable Harbour which were both maybe 20 minutes away in the car. The Wildwood Trust which was 10 mins drive away was okay. Our almost 3 year old was a bit bored trying to spot the animals and was more interested in the construction vehicles near the entrance. But that’s just him! Maybe for when he’s a bit older. We did drive out to Botany Bay & Broadstairs but they were so busy, we couldn’t park! The hottest day ever was probably not the best time to go haha! The beaches did look lovely though.
Just one little thing. We were informed beforehand that the gardener would need to tend to the garden for an hour or 2 on Monday. I fully understood as it’s such a lovely garden and needs maintaining, but (just a friendly suggestion) would it not be possible to do this during the changeover on Fridays? Only because we didn’t know what time he was coming and it was such a lovely day but we didn’t feel we could go out to sit in the garden, hang out the washing etc. It’s not really something you want to be worrying about when you’re on holiday and want to relax.
Apart from that and the traffic noise, we really enjoyed staying at Bow Cottage and exploring the surrounding areas.

We had a lovely stay at Bow Cottage, had everything we needed. Fordwich has a couple of pubs with nice beer gardens serving excellent food within a few minutes walk. We took a canoe down the river which our 6 year old thought was great as they supply fishing nets too! Bus into Canterbury is easy to use if you want to leave the car. All in all a great cottage in a fab location. Thanks Lois!

A lovely cottage located in the smallest town in England, more like a village, close to two pubs that do good food. Highly recommend the George and Dragon which is reasonably priced for the excellent food it provides. It’s also very dog friendly. The nearest shop is a small Co-Op a 10 minute walk away in the adjacent village of Sturry. The big surprise for us was the amount of walks close by for us and our dog, especially from the adjacent School Lane, across fields and Woods and around the lakes to the beautiful village of Westbere where there is another excellent pub to eat in called the Old Yew Tree. There is even a footpath close by which goes into Canterbury, 2 miles away. The cottage itself has everything you need and we appreciated the welcome pack of milk, wine and dog treats. The only disappointment was that the only grassed area in the garden is fenced off to stop dogs using it, which doesn’t yet appear in the online cottage photos. A grassed area was one of the reasons we chose it but otherwise it is faultless and we certainly will be returning soon, hopefully later this year.
There is also now a dedicated parking bay in School Lane which was a very pleasant addition as parking in the street is almost impossible. I must also mention that the owner is very friendly and lives close by if needed.

Lovely, comfortable and spotless little cottage with everything you need provided (and a very well equipped kitchen - but glad I had a bottle opener on my keyring!). Delightful garden for breakfasting and tea and cake at the end of the day. Narrow stairs might be an issue for some. Wifi strong signal and reliable in the lounge. Lots of brochures o places to stay. Two pubs within short walking distance was a bonus. Street parking was an issue for us only once in a whole week - timing is everything.
Fordwhich is a great location for Thanet, Canterbury and inland exploring.

We loved this cottage.
We loved this cottage. Arrangements made for our arrival were easy. Lois also told us about a new parking space for visitors. We appreciated the heating and bottle of wine as we settled in. This spotlessly clean cottage is comfortable and has everything you need. As the weather warmed up we were able to enjoy sitting out in the delightful rear garden. A perfect base to explore the area.
