The launchpad for whale watching tours, sunset cruises and swim with dolphin adventures, Nelson Bay offers a close-to-nature experience with all the creature comforts. The largest town in the Port Stephens area, you ll find easy access to cafes, restaurants and shopping, as well as sheltered beaches perfect for families with young children.
See dolphins, whales & marine life
More than 100 dolphins live in the pristine blue waters of the Port Stephens - Great Lakes Marine Park. Dolphin watching cruises depart all year from the busy marina in Nelson Bay. For a truly unique experience, during the warmer months, you can swim amongst wild dolphins with Dolphin Swim Australia. Whale watching boat tours operate between May and November, when thousands of humpback and southern right whales migrate along the NSW North Coast. Just east of Nelson Bay, go snorkelling at Fly Point - Halifax Aquatic Reserve, and discover an underwater world teeming with sponge gardens, soft corals, sea turtles and a colourful array of fish.
Cycling & lookouts
Hire bikes and cycle the picturesque waterfront. The Bartlett cycleway is 5km one-way from pretty Bagnalls Beach to Little Beach, near the heritage-listed Nelson Head Lighthouse, built in 1872. In the lighthouse cottage, there is a delightful cafe with stunning coastal views. The Little Nel is another great local cafe. You ll discover more panoramic vistas at Gan Gan Hill lookout, where you can marvel at the natural beauty of the Port Stephens inlet, twice the size of Sydney Harbour. To the east is the magnificent Tomaree National Park and Fingal Bay. To the south are the giant Stockton Bight Sand Dunes in the Worimi Conservation Lands, one of Australia s great natural wonders.

My mother, myself and my young son stayed at this property for the September school holidays, 2023. The location was superb - ground level, allocated car spot, only one set of stairs so very easy access to the unit. Walking distance to the beach, and conveniently close to the shops and business areas, so we loved the location . The unit itself was lovely, clean, well maintained…some appliances and features of the unit could use some upgrading, but this did not in any way make any negative impact to our overall experience. We stayed for 4 nights , and we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay, for example, washer, dryer, DVD player, kitchen appliances to cook at home, vacuum cleaner (I’m a neat freak), nice spacious wardrobes, etc. Overall, we were very happy with this property, and we would definitely stay here again!

The location of the property was just amazing, lovely and quiet with a wonderful view and great proximity to Nelson Bay beach, other beaches, fishing, shops and restaurants/cafes for the walker or driver.
The cleanliness of the property was generally pretty good overall but he balcony/patio was a bit grubby. Even taking into account that the trees surrounding the unit, (which provided great shade), would naturally drop leaves and dust, the area didn’t appear to have been swept for some time.
The kitchen was well equipped, functional and clean (except for a very “well used” baking dish at the back of a cupboard which should be replaced or disposed of), and it was a little odd that dishwashing detergent was provided but not a dishcloth or brush to wash with.
The property did not advertise that it had air conditioning, which was fine, we were prepared for that. However after reading a review which mentioned the fans provided, we did take a couple of our own. We were very happy we did, as out of the fans at the property, one didn’t work at all, and the other two were ineffective.
There were only a couple of other little things that if rectified would make a difference. The toilet roll holder was broken and fell apart onto the floor on first use. There was a totally empty can of air freshener; not too difficult to provide a full or even half full one. And maybe a little more clarity regarding bringing your own towels, maybe just state that “towels” includes bathroom floor towels and tea towels.
The full laundry was awesome, with a great washing machine and dryer, especially if you are having a long stay and/or are having a family holiday with the kids.
The queen bed was really comfortable and both the bedrooms were light and bright and the large windows provided a very pleasant breeze through the unit; we were fortunate the weather wasn’t horribly hot during our stay.
Overall we had a lovely break and would like to return to the property, perhaps for a Winter getaway.
Many thanks!

Lacking basic standards
Old and in need of new furnishings. No air con one small fan for entire two bedroom unit, sinking queen mattress, two bowls for family of four to share, the not clean vacum doesn't work and everything felt greasy very hot, kitchen full of German cockroaches, and the list goes on, it's a shame because location is great. Unfortunately had to cut holiday short by two nights as I could not stay another night longer.

Great location but disappointed
Great location and short walk to Marina.
Didn't realise no air-conditioning so had to buy some fans.
Cleanliness was fair. Had to clean when we arrived.
