This Modern Cottage Compound is a very nice place in a quiet and charming area. My partner and I had such an amazing time there, we were truly sad to leave! The owner was very accommodating and promptly responded to any questions we had. 10/10 space. I highly recommend this charming home.

The cottage compound was a perfect place for me to stay while exploring Port Townsend. I felt comfortable and safe, and surrounded by nature’s beauty.

Great property in a great location! Well stocked with everything you might need. Bonus - momma deer and two babies spent almost our whole vacation frolicking or napping on and around the property. We will be back.

The property is just as described. Proximity to trails was wonderful! The outdoor space was amazing, like having another room. Everything was quite private. We stayed with our two 12 year old sons and there was plenty of space.

This VRBO compound has really nicely arranged primary and guest quarters – we utilized both throughout our entire stay and it would work well as a connected basecamp that also allows several groups their own privacy. It’s located in a neighborhood community with shared central green space for the 7-8 small houses in the circle; a small farm is across the street. We found the design and layout to be extremely thoughtful in maximizing the relatively small lot; everything in both the house and garden feels like they fit the lot like a glove. The VRBO has really good visual privacy, but noise travels throughout the neighborhood community, and conversations in backyards carry easily across the central green space. The guest quarters, in particular, are located in very close proximity (perhaps only 10-20 feet) from a neighbor; this was largely a non-issue for us and likely would be a non-issue for many, but if noise privacy is highly important, or if you want to have loud parties, please keep the close proximity in mind. The immediate 7-8 house community backs up to a dead-end street with hiking trail access almost immediately behind the property – these trails connect all through the PT area, and are such a nice resource for runs and walks. The house is also a fantastic base camp for exploring local, state, and national parks (5-minute drive to Fort Worden; hiking trail in back yard leads to ocean bluff ~20 minute walk).
In terms of provisions, the primary quarters have a king bedroom with desk workspace, bathroom, laundry, full kitchen and living space; the guest quarters have a queen bedroom with mini fridge/microwave, bathroom, and bunkbeds tucked in near the entryway. The full kitchen includes apartment-sized refrigerator and dishwasher, stove/oven, and complement of pots, pans, utensils, and dishes.
We didn’t meet Ryan in person but he was very communicative via text and made us feel at home throughout the stay.

The owner has been congenial, professional, respectful, quick to respond to communications, and expediently fixed small things that needed attention quickly. Lovely property. Super clean. All dishes and amenities you need to cook with. Lots of visual privacy due to landscaping of trees and bamboo. Beware of noise, however: you can hear neighbors easily and they can hear you very easily. So this is something to be conscious of here: Quiet hours in this town are 7pm-7am. Overall, a very fun place to entertain or getaway with friends and family. The separation of the smaller dwellings was a clever design decision, much like having a main house and “casitas”, for an efficient use of space. So you can say goodnight to parents, kids, or friends, and they can have their own separate dwelling I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

My wife and I have recently moved to Washington to be closer to our immediate family and continue our careers. We stayed at the Modern Shed property during the month of July 2020 as we needed some temporary transitional housing. Our stay was wonderful, and we enjoyed the beautiful Port Townsend weather this time of year. The owner, Ryan Smith has created a beautiful inside and outside living space. This serene property surely doesn’t dissappoint!!

Heat Refugees
We've spent three summers at the compound to escape the Texas heat. The Port Townsend residents call us “heat refugees”.
The compound is great for large families. Wonderful neighbors. Quiet escape from the big city.

We stayed with our twin teenage sons and mother in law visited. The set up of the homes was perfect for us. We loved the fire pit, the well equipped kitchen, the washer and dryer and the puzzles and games. The location is great and the property itself is beautiful! I highly recommend this home!!

What a perfectly tranquil, peaceful, cozy, and thoughtfully designed space - inside and out. It’s hard to capture in photos or in words how great these dwellings feel. A great example of thoughtful interior and exterior design and high quality materials and craftsmanship.
The plants and pathway leading into the compound felt so inviting. I immediately felt at home when I arrived. Calming views of trees/vegetation from every window created both sense of connection to the outside and also privacy. The wood paneled walls and ceilings added warmth and a cozy feel.
The main cottage where I stayed was immaculate, well-stocked and organized with everything you could need. Plenty of storage space and appliances all worked well.
Great windows, airflow and natural light throughout. Sliding doors with screens made for cooling breezes when needed. I enjoyed watching the leaves move in the wind and the changing afternoon light and shadows move across the walls. The long kitchen table made for a perfect workspace! Loved the unique handmade overhead lighting and option for ceiling lighting as well.
The deck is great! Very private and spacious and covered patio table has plenty of comfortable seating.
This location is perfect for walks and exploring PT and the peninsula. The road is quiet and pleasant with wonderful and respectful neighbors. I loved listening to the birds and nearby owls at night.
Quick drive or bike ride into downtown or North Beach, Fort Worden. And public trails a few steps away. The cottages are very close to where you park and easily accessible with just a few steps.
Communication with Ryan was great! Very responsive and friendly.
It’s hard to adequately describe the beauty, tranquility and comfort of these modern cottages. If you're looking for a place to relax and recharge, I can think of no better. Highly recommend.

I stayed at the Modern Shed Compound for 2 months, January and February, to experience Modern Shed living and this lovely town of Port Townsend. The Sheds were uniquely and comfortably designed along with the large deck which connected them all. The location turned out to be perfect, just under 2 miles from Water Street in town and also under 2 miles from Fort Worden; easy for a great walk or a very short drive. The neighborhood is so very quiet with minimum lighting in the neighborhood making it perfect for star gazing from the deck. I would recommend this place for singles, couples, or a large family.

Quiet neighborhood with great neighbors. Landscaping blocks view of neughbors’ homes and gives a great sense of seclusion.

Peaceful/Awesome
The "Sheds" are beautiful. The setting is so peaceful and relaxing. We loved it. We even met a couple of the neighbors who were very nice! We even had a deer come and eat some leave off a tree in the yard, it was so graceful and pretty. The drive up to the sheds is shaded by large trees which adds to the serenity of the place. You actually get 3 sheds. The first has a queen bed, and two bunks, plus the couch pulls out, the 2nd also has a queen or full bed and two bunks, the third is just a bunk house. The first two had bathrooms and kitchen areas.
Our 15 year old was excited to have his own shed! Port Townsend is such a cool place to go in the summer, we didn't want to come back to the heat of New Mexico. The town is charming.

Great cottage in Port Townsend
My wife and I spent the month of August in the modern cottage and found it well equiped and comfortable. It also offered enough room to share time with family and friends who joined us at different times during the month. It is beautifully landscaped and private. The deck with southern exposure is spacious, sunny and comfortable with a large table and plenty of chairs. A fire pit is available for s-mores and warmth on cool evening if no burn ban is declared. It is a short ride to town or Fort Warden. The only down side for us was the periodic construction noise from the two nearby homes that were being built. Another inconvenience was the lack of reading lamps in the bedroom with only overhead lights that were poorly positioned for reading. The refrigerator was apartment size so seemed small. I would gladly stay there again and feel it was fairly priced for the amenities it provided.

Beautiful!!
We thoroughly enjoyed staying in the beautiful Modern Shed Compound! The landscaping is lovely and pours in through the generous windows and doors around the buildings. The firepit is perfect for smores and family gatherings! Thank you for a lovely stay!!

Great Port Townsend experience
This property is like no other! We stayed last summer. Perfect setting... Late afternoon cocktails on the sprawling deck, card games in the main house or lazy mornings in bed. Short distance to quaint downtown farmers market, shops and waterfront. We would definitely come again.
