We enjoyed the breakfast workshop and the dressup in traditional kimono. A lot of snow during our stay and it was cold, but the heating for the futton was just great.
4.5
It was such a good experience , comfy futons, warm bedroom, fantastic bath and shower, washing machine in room. Everyone was lovely and helpful. Meditation and walking in the dark experiences were great. One of the highlights of our trip.
Location was not that great.

The warm welcome from the staff and the gorgeous cosy accommodation. It was all beautiful. The prayers and meditation finished off a great couple of nights.

Everything was great. Best mattresses we slept on in Japan. Comfortable.
Nothing.

The place is so peaceful and beautiful temple room inside. The room was big and so comfortable. praying session in the morning was very amazing experience for us

This temple stay was exceptional. Everything from the room, facilities, staff and the whole experience was fantastic. Unforgettable! It is very very clean, has so many facilities to use in the room I especially liked the use of the free washing machine and dryer in my room (flower room) and the morning prayer ceremony was interesting. I also opted for meditation which I also enjoyed. Monk Keiji san was extremely friendly and helpful, which made coming to a temple stay for the first time as a solo traveller much less daunting. Thank you!
Of course the temple is quite chilly in places as it’s winter now however there are 3 powerful heaters in the room that work really well so it was not too bad other than when you cross to the communal areas you can feel a bit cold

Staying at a temple was unique experience. The rooms were beautiful in traditional Japanese style. The fold out beds had an extra mattress and were very comfortable. The view of the garden was lovely and relaxing. We participated in morning prayer and also a meditation session. Both are highly recommended.
We also recommend the small breakfast restaurant across the street for toast and pancakes. The place is run by an adorable elderly couple.

the location is perfect, very clean rooms with absolutely everything you need and very friendly and helpful staff

We were invited to attend the morning ceremony of Heart Sutra chanting and the experience was very unique.
The environment was beautiful and facilities were neat and well organised. There's only one bathroom to share with two other rooms so sometimes there might be a queue.
The triple room was right next to the road, so sometimes you can hear cars going by, but nothing that cannot be solved with a pair of ear plugs.

Gorgeous old temple building with very friendly staff, nice kitchen and many optional activities. Beautifully appointed, shared bathroom.
Can get quite cold due to lack of insulation perhaps. Room heaters helped. Noise travels between thin walls, so if that's a problem for you...

Such an unique experience to stay in a Temple! The room was super comfortable, with lovely decor and the inner courtyard is beautiful.

Interesting experience staying at a buddhist temple in typical tatami room. Enjoyed morning meditation and ritual.
Its called a hotel but theres no amenities like a hotel. Poor hot water pressure in family room, only trickles. Nice to have a washer dryer, but it takes 5 hours to do a small load. Too expensive, very poor value. Poor information from staff regarding restaurants in area, most were closed on a Thursday night and we got lost finding a restaurant and returning to hotel. Very stressful!

The experience to stay in a temple.
You could hear the neighbors (walking etc).

Great people and location

Absolutely fantastic experience and brilliant stay. Our host was an absolute pleasure and great at replying to my messages about temple etiquette. The morning prayer service, Buddhism stories, zen meditation, lock finding and kimono experience were all amazing. The beds were comfy, the bathroom facilities were great and the heaters in the room worked well. Location was fab, too!
Nothing! Unfortunately the washing machine didn’t work, but we were assured we could still wash our stuff in another room, but we didn’t need to.

a truly historic-unique Zen temple in Takayama with morning meditation service by monk in house. Surprisingly, well modernized for guests with excellent heating, bedding, storage and common area facilities.
In particular, an outdoor Zen garden and remarkable Buddhist temple allowed one to step back in time and contemplate life.
Breakfast is preferable across the street ie excellent coffee, hot meals, etc. served by a lovely elderly couple in a vintage venue.

We liked the opportunity to sleep in a real and well maintained Buddhist temple, close to the town.
The space felt intimate and the bath in the (shared) bathroom is one of the best I have ever had, thanks to a really spacious and pleasant shower.
In the morning you get the chance to join an authentic Buddhist celebration and the monk makes the effort to make you understand the meaning of it, by providing information in English.
The hotel also offers the opportunity to sign in to extra experiences like calligraphy or meditation.
Our room was a bit small but that's fine. Unfortunately it was only heated by a gas (non electric) heater and for this reason, we didn't feel safe keeping it turned on at night and ended up being cold in the morning. This was our choice, but just mentioning.
We would have appreciated a bit more interaction with the monk, a part from the morning celebration the overall experience felt slightly dry, at least for our expectations.
Although laundry is indicated among the hotel services, this is actually an external independent launderette positioned 5 min on foot from the accomodation site.

Wonderfully warm welcome! Fabulous experience from
Beginning to end.
Everything was awesome

The location was excellent, the staff was friendly, the temple itself was beautiful and clean.
We had a VERY rough night due to the heater in the room. First off, there is a standard air conditioner / heater in the room that really doesn't work at all. We ran this like normal for several hours and tried it multiple times but it was not heating the room up and felt like it only shoots out cold air. So they put a kerosene heater in the room to make up for this. The first night we noticed the room smelt very bad like kerosene, but we used the heater anyways. It shuts off every 3 hours so we work up very cold. This was disappointing and not a great sleep but it was tolerable.
The second night is when we ran into big problems. The kerosene heater wasn't working properly and was seemingly just shooting gas into the small and confined room. Within minutes the entire room stunk of gas, we got headaches, and our eyes were even starting to burn. I researched kerosene heaters, and apparently they can be very dangerous if they are run in small rooms with poor airflow, and if they aren't working properly. We literally had no choice except shut it off and open all the windows (in -10 degree weather). We let the room air out for about an hour before we had to shut the windows and try to sleep. The smell still lingered in the room and it was absolutely freezing. It was -10 degrees that night and we could see our breath in the room, but we had no other option but to try and sleep through it. One of the most miserable nights I've personally experienced.
I don't normally write bad reviews but I had to for this situation. It's not safe at all to run a faulty gas heater in a small room, the smell was truly awful, we were getting proper headaches and eyes were burning, and my girlfriends suitcase and clothing literally smells like kerosene still a day later when we opened it at the next hotel.

peaceful and different experiences - the morning practice and other activities offered
a little cold but there was plenty of portable heaters

The lovely welcome provided by everyone at the Temple, the experience of the morning prayer will always be remembered. We stayed in the Moon Room- on a night it got down to -6 degrees. The electric blankets and split system heater were fantastic at keeping us warm (there was also another heater that we didn’t use overnight). The shared bathroom facility (shared with one other room) was really wonderfully set up and no problem for this family of 4. We used the kitchen briefly- also we’ll set up. Other people were staying at the temple, but we didn’t see them. The location is close to restaurants and food places and all that Takayama has to offer.
Limit of 1 Hour for bathroom booking for a family of 4 per stay felt a bit rushed - esp. given it had a lovely big bath to use. Wasn’t clear if we could split our time and book a slot in the morning also- which would be handy for those who wanted to freshen up in morning before departure (ie. 40 mins at night, 20 mins in morning) . Notwithstanding, was a great experience we had staying at this wonderful temple.

Host was very friendly, and actually spoke English when introducing us to the hotel, it's history, and himself. The beds were heated on the inside, which was a new experience for me. (as well as the tatami mats)
It's pretty cold in the winter, but they did provide kerosene heaters. A bit uncomfortable when going from heated room into the shared bathroom (where the floor was cold), so I recommend getting a bigger room.

the experience was amazing and the monk was so nice and explained so much to us and the staff was great 😊
it was cold but not a huge problem

although the room itself was very simple (as advertised) these monks really know what they are doing in terms of what matters in accommodation. Towels were thick, luxurious and impeccably white. Shampoos etc, and shared living room architecture were of top quality. Also proper coffee bags in the kitchen instead of jars of instant!. and nice that they could give restaurant recommendations, and are open enough to let foreign tourists share their prayer service. it was a lovely traditional cultural experience.

The temple and rooms were beautiful, and Kaiji-san was a wonderful host, and made our stay very special and enjoyable, allowing us to discover even more elements of Japanese culture and Buddhism.

the buddisht prayer ceremony in the morning was lovely and the rooms were very warm and comfortable, and whilst having a shared bathroom it was very well done and elegant. a lovely space with lovely staff

I loved everything!
