About this cabin rental
Fortunately, some of the most beautiful places on earth can be experienced without the cost and responsibility of actually owning them. Red Canyon Ranch in the Black Hills is no exception. Situated high atop the Black Hills historic red-limestone and sandstone canyon, the location of the original route into the Hills for both Native Americans and the white settlers that followed, Red Canyon Ranch is a monument to the cowboy lifestyle, with elements of luxury and style that most cowboys have probably never seen. The cabin is a lodge-pole pine dwelling, in the tradition of an aged lodge. The cabin sits on 110 private acres and offers full views of Red Canyon from three sides, rustic floors and cabinetry with natural dry-stack, slate fireplace in the living room, and master bedroom, and sleeping accommodations for 6 people. An outdoor hot tub that nearly floats above the canyon’s edge makes soaking under the stars a life time memory.
On a clear day, Red Canyon offers extraordinary views to its east, where sheer red walls accentuate the awesome powers that went into its creation, as well as the intricacies of its meandering path. To the south, across the canyon, the dense clustering of centuries-old Ponderosa pine easily explains how the area came to be known as the “Black” Hills . To the west, the canyon continues with steep rock walls, dramatic outcroppings and a long distance view to Wyoming.
You'll Love Our Neighbors: Red Canyon is home to one of the most diverse wildlife populations in the Black Hills. Elk, Antelope, Mule Deer, Eagles, Mountain Lions, Bobcats and Turkeys.
Explore The Best Part Of The Black Hills: The southern Black Hills holds something for everyone and every taste. Nestled among the rolling hills are quaint towns offering shopping, dining, and tourist attractions that could easily fill your day with smiles. The area also hosts some of the country’s most beautiful parks and well-known monuments, all within a short and scenic drive from each other.
At the Founder's Cabin, you'll have thousands of acres to explore whether hiking or horseback riding across this historic property.

Everything about our stay was great! Communication with the host was great! Nina's food was great! seeing all the wildlife was amazing. Experiencing 50 elk come out of the hills and the buffalo were amazing highlight. It was very warm but yet the canyon breezes made it very comfortable. This is a great place to just completely relax! I will stay here again. I cant say enough about this southern Black Hills beauty. Thank you for sharing your cabin with us.

A cabin with every detail…decor, beds, landscaping, well equipped kitchen, outdoor kitchen, hot tub, wonderful deck. Also, plenty of supplies (towels, toilet paper, paper towels, foil, plastic wrap, containers, dishwasher soap, etc.). All those things you need to have the comforts of home and more! We loved the solitude and beauty of nature…canyon, Sky, birds, and trees!

The cabin and the view is beautiful but the 11 miles of gravel is a big drawback. If you’re going to stay at the cabin the whole time the gravel road isn’t bad but we went some where all three days we were there. We did see Buffalo and antelope.

Well equipped cabin on a scenic overlook/lovely acreage. This was our second stay. This time around things could have been a bit cleaner (looks like maybe someone sneaked in a pet? Not good for allergies.), but overall we enjoyed our stay and the surrounding area.

I had high expectations for our stay and it exceeded every one of them by far! The view is absolutely amazing and the cabin is immaculately kept. The only downside to choosing to stay here is that it will probably ruin future vacations for you because it will be hard to top it. We will definitely be back.

What an amazing cabin in a breathtaking setting. It was peaceful, secluded, had a great little kitchen stocked with everything we might need, and was beautifully decorated—it was so much fun to look at the art and the books and the lovely gardens! Lori, the host, could not have been nicer. Best of all were the views on every side and from every vantage point: spectacular. We ordered a Thai dinner one night from Nina and it was outstanding. All in all, an exceptional stay.

We truly enjoyed our stay at this awesome property. The host made sure everything we would need for our stay was there and everything worked perfectly. The views are outstanding and a pleasure to just sit and relax watching the sunset.

It is so quiet and away from it all. If you want something close to the state parks, this isn't for you as it takes 20+ minutes just to get back to the main road. But to us the drive was worth it because we were secluded in our own little haven with a beautiful view--you won't get this anywhere else. Hostess is so responsive and it literally could not have been better. We cooked most nights and the kitchen was very well stocked with the necessary tools.

We enjoyed the unique location and amazing view.
It was memorable to watch the light on the red rock walls change through the day.

Absolutely everything we were looking for in a little vacation get-away! Views were amazing and the wildlife was right outside in the driveway almost every night! I know we are coming back to this property again in the future

This was the most amazing place we have ever stayed. Absolutely beautiful words cannot describe how beautiful and relaxing. We only ventured out once to see Custer park and drove Ironwood Rd which is a must see along with Sylvan Lake and Needles Highway. It was very hard to leave the cabin truly amazing!

We stayed at the cabin and listened to the wind in the pine trees over looking the canyon. We saw turkey, and other birds, the cabin is well equipped to just stay there and enjoy, and the views are amazing. Shout out to Nina, the Thai food is the best. Highly recommend this cabin and already thinking how nice it would be in the winter.

My wife and I had an amazing time at Red Canyon Cabin. The home was as pictured. Stunning location and great amenities. Enjoyed the Black Hills, Custer State Park, Badlands and Mt. Rushmore nearby.

We had a wonderful visit. The cabin is well appointed with everything needed for preparing meals. We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of condiments and spices that were available for our use.
The cabin is well maintained and very clean, with signs of a host that takes care to provide personal touches throughout. You can tell Lori takes pride in being a good host with a lot of attention to detail.
The hot tub is clean and well maintained, as well as the outdoor grill.
In the week we were here, we were able to see Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Needles Highway, Crazy Horse and the Mineral Springs, for a good soak!
I would definitely recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The cabin is gorgeous, and the view spectacular. I was surprised how much we enjoyed the hot tub. It's not something I usually look for, but relaxing after a long day of hiking while watching the stars and listening to the owls hooting turned out to be just the thing.

This cabin is beyond beautiful. They have thought of everything so just bring food, very well appointed! So secluded and the views are unbelievable. The thing you need to know is it is a 20-30 minute un-paved drive once you turn on the road to the cabin. But the drive is very pretty and you will see mule deer so...there is that! Overall one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed!!!

My husband and I just stayed at Red Canyon Cabin for the second time and will definitely be back for a third and more! We love the peaceful environment, comfort of the cabin, great hiking, hot tub and fires in the fireplace. The home has everything you need. Bring enough food, etc. and plan to park and never leave! Lori and John are very attentive if you have any questions. Perfect for a romantic getaway!

Absolutely breathtaking from start to finish. Cabin is EXACTLY like the pictures. The views are stunning. The Thai Food from the neighbor that you can order 1 day in advance was excellent. The hot tub was in a great spot. Can’t say enough great things about this. Thanks Lori we will be back!!

We could literally make this review as long as a novel, however, we wont. Let us just say everything was beyond wonderful, from the booking, the directions and drive to the location, the cabin and all things in and around it, the views, local day trips, Nina's food, and the checkout! If you would like an amazingly, fantastic and tranquil weekend or longer, do not hesitate to book!!

I think this visit was our 4th stay at this property, and we love every minute that we spend at Lori’s place! The cabin interior is meticulously clean and well maintained, with comfortable beds, quality bedding, and thoughtful touches that make you feel like you didn’t book a long enough stay. And then there’s the exterior, and I don’t see how anyone could get tired of the fabulous views from every window (including the shower), two decks, the hot tub and grill area. This is a place where my family can completely exhale…and enjoy talking to one another again by the fire or around the table. I leave this review risking an even busier schedule at the cabin, which can be difficult to find openings for, but is well worth the scheduling effort! Lori, thanks for another amazing retreat!

Lori’s cabin is one of a kind. It sits on a steep cliff and the views are spectacular! There is about a 25 min drive on gravel roads to get there, and there is no cell service. You do have access to wifi. We were happy to be off line for the week and didn’t mind the drive. If you are looking for a one of a kind off grid experience, this is it! Thank you, Lori, for sharing your beutiful cabin.

Everything was amazing with the cabin. Love the isolated location right at the edge of a beautiful canyon. The cabin itself was spacious and in great shape with everything you could want. We were so sorry to leave after our 5 night stay. The deer, rabbits and turkey were there to see us off.

This property is absolutely wonderful. It was everything it was advertised to be and more. The scenery was serene and the cabin was adorable. It was very remote & private but also close enough to the local attractions. I highly recommend Red Canyon Cabin!

This was the most unique and special short term rental we have ever stayed at. The setting can’t be duplicated and every aspect of the cabin contributed to this most memorable experience.
The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare complete meals and the time spent relaxing on the deck taking in the beauty of canyon and surroundings was everyone’s favorite pastime. We had to force ourselves to leave the cabin to visit the phenomenal sights in the area. And I have never dealt with a host who was more organized or helpful than Lori.
I watched this property for years trying to find a time when it was available and we were able to travel to SD. I had incredibly high expectations and it did not disappoint!
We can only dream about returning sometime.

The Red Canyon Cabin is truly like a little piece of heaven. The views are breathtaking, the cabin is welcoming and absolutely darling, and the outdoor area is so peaceful. From the red rock valley views, the beautiful flowers around the cabin, to the relaxing hot tub, the cabin offered everything we would dream of for a romantic getaway. Thank you Lori for being a wonderful host! We would love to come back one day!

The cabin is just perfect. Quiet, clean, and secluded (but not in a scary way), with breathtaking scenery. The owner has thought of everything to make your stay enjoyable. I can't wait to return! The landscaping around the cabin is also lovely (you may hear a very faint whistle sound briefly in the late a.m. as the flowers are watered/irrigated - just pretend it's Wind Cave - which is nearby). A chipmunk came to take a drink. The shower has a very "natural" feel and has stone walls, so just pretend you are showering in a cascade coming down the canyon. :) I wouldn't recommend this location for children or pets, but for adults seeking to "unplug" (I went off the grid here for a few days), this place is awesome! If you do care to venture out, Custer, SD is nearby and the perfect town to "explore."

As we drove up to the cabin our first comments were “this place is absolutely incredible!” The photos online are gorgeous and the views even more stunning in person. The cabin itself is situated so every room has gorgeous views. It is so cozy and comfortable. The beds, bedding and amenities are top quality and arrange so that the guests can find whatever is needed with no problem. Lori was a joy and her decorating and gardening skills showed how artistic and classy she is. Her taste is impeccable. The first night we watched a storm move in from Wyoming producing a show that would rival the best firework display. It was gorgeous. The wildlife was abundant with birds, bunnies, deer and even a little lizard and a harmless Bull Snake that came to drink water in the pond off the deck. Even those of us who are not comfortable around snakes found the snake fascinating to watch. Every night around dusk we heard the elk bugling back and forth to each other. We tried to find them but were not able to. A neighbor, Nina, prepared a delicious Thai dinner for us one night. It was an unexpected treat. We all agreed that the Red Canyon Cabin is one of those very unique places that few get to experience. How fortunate we all felt that Lori is gracious enough to share her piece of heaven with others.

We loved our stay at Red Canyon Ranch. The views from the property were amazing. The location is remote enough to feel like you are away from it all while still being centrally located to some of the best nature locations in SD. Checking out Custer State Park is a must.

We picked the cabin to enjoy some time away from everything and were not disappointed. We enjoyed the quiet away from everything. The cabin is nicely decorated and equipped with lots of windows for enjoying the views. Custer was close enough (about a 35 minute ride) to easily grab a bite to eat and drinks. Worth the stay.

The views are stunning. The property was as advertised. Super clean, well appointed and organized... everything needed for a vacation was ready and waiting. The owner's info is spot on with directions and the check in/out directions and info on the property is clear and concise ...zero issues.
A leisurely drive down a well maintained gravel road, past farms and pastures, grazing horses, deer, bison ... you reach the end of the world. The cleanest of air, the clearest of skies, silence from any city sounds... simply amazing.
Waking with the sun, grabbing my coffee, sitting on the deck overlooking the red rock of the canyon could not be beat. My family had plans but wow I just wanted to sit there and enjoy that view. Repeat at night with a drink and the hot tub, seriously, didn't want to leave.
We cooked out on the grill, ate around the large dining table, watched movies and played games in the loft, sat around the fire, slept in a couple times on the comfortable beds, and just had an all around great time.
I would highly recommend this place.

My wife and I couldn’t have enjoyed our stay anymore than we did. We had a lot planned for our stay and cancelled a couple of the plans because we wanted to spend more time at the property. The views, the cabin, the hot tub, the garden, the solitude, Nina’s Thai Food, I could keep going on and on! This was a world class place to stay and to enjoy everything that the Black Hills has to offer, but in the privacy of your own space. We loved it!

This cabin was exactly what I had in mind when planning a visit to the Black Hills. Had no intention of sightseeing this trip and wanted a relaxing do nothing getaway and it exceeded my expectations! It was peaceful, secluded, cozy and comfortable with a unique view. We enjoyed the hot tub and fireplace as well as our short exploration walks. Spent our days reading, napping and taking in the amazing view. My husband even put 300 miles on his adventure bike. There was a full moon during our stay and looked forward to it rising over the canyon ridge each night. What a beautiful sight! An added surprise were the bison seen on the way in and out of the property. Lori was excellent to work with. She answered the many questions I had from before booking clear through check out. Thank you for sharing your charming home! Had a wonderful experience and were reluctant to leave.
