The Montreat house was fabulous. It was comfortable, interesting, and very eclectic. Everything you’d want in a Montreat house this house has. It is close to everything, very accessible, and a comfortable place.

The very best in old school retreat houses. Great location within walking distance of Lake Susan, Assembly Inn and Anderson Auditorium. The host of this house (Richard) was exceptionally helpful to us and we would stay here or at any of his other properties in the future!

The youth loved the house and so did the adults! They wanted us to reserve the same house for next year on the second day we were there.

We had a wonderful time. The owner answered all our questions quickly. Checking in was easy and other than a bear getting into the garbage we had no problems.

We LOVED the front porch with all the rocking chairs! We spent every possible moment out there. The house was very cozy and roomy. We are jigsaw puzzle enthusiasts and there were plenty of good spaces to work on one. We enjoyed our stay!

Sorry to say...
Appliances are dirty and work incompletely. Cookware is old and dirty. One eye on the stove in not functioning. Front porch is dangerous. Great fireplace but no usable wood on site and no help from host in acquiring any. Could only get check-in information after two emails. We were informed that the upstairs toilet was not working properly and that a plumber had been called but that plumber never showed up during our four day stay.
The heat works great which is important in January and the location is super when attending conferences at Montreat Conference Center.

Responsive owner
This property was well represented from the photos and the description. Being a longtime visitor to Montreat, I would describe it as your typical Montreat house, with lots of character but not really many modern upgrades. We really enjoyed it and found it very well-stocked. The owner was extremely responsive to any questions we had. We would come back - was perfect of a family Thanksgiving.

Lovely, history-filled house located in a quiet wooded area. Very easy walk to Lake Susan and the park - which our 2nd and 4th grader loved! Quick drive into Black Mountain for food and shopping, and also to local hikes. Plenty of space to spread out and relax. Definitely want to return!

Location was great! This is an old house with a very small kitchen with little counter space. Place needs to be decluttered and repaired! Large cracks in walls. Not a good setting for very young children. Some furniture was broken, such as a chair in the living room. Having to bring own SINGLE sheets/ towels was inconvenient. Heat, fireplace and washer/dryer work well. I would not stay there again.

A White Christmas
The house was perfect for our family during a pandemic. We could spread out in the four bedrooms and two baths. It is an old house with old house quirks, including stains and dust. But this also meant we could have our dogs, which meant a lot. Things were clean where it mattered. And the price was right.

After a crazy year, my family needed a place to meet in the middle for Thanksgiving. It was just like staying at my grandmas house....which is just what we needed. Quiet, great hiking nearby, good for long walks.

Fun weekend in Montreat, the kids loved it.

Rustic Stay
Exactly the stay we expected from an early 19th century cabin and would stay again. Our group has been visiting Montreat for 40 years and wanted to reminisce in a similar cabin. Overall, the cabin was relatively clean on the surface areas but could be purged of some older musty items which can be challenging for those with sensitive noses or health issues.

Nice stay with friends
We had a nice time at this property. It was a pretty short walk to Lake Susan and a nice playground where our kids enjoyed running around and playing. It is an old house with a nice porch and it had most everything we needed.

Thanksgiving in Montreat
Great for our family reunion. Bought tickets to the Thanksgiving buffet at the Assembly Inn and walked there together. Plenty of walks and playground time. Would do it again!

A nice week and enjoyed the improvements made since our stay last year. Thank you.

Great front porch
The property manager was very responsive to our needs, including bringing us a key when we locked ourselves out, and delivering us a new washing machine two days after the old one broke. Due to a miscommunication, the house was quite dusty and dirty when we arrived. I understand the lines of communication on that have since been cleared up. There are plenty of beds, which was fantastic (But we didn't realize we needed to bring our own sheets and towels! Whoops!) The nice windows and front porch with rocking chairs offer beautiful views in this conveniently located Montreat home.

Wonderful Peaceful Weekend in Montreat
Had a wonderful time in Montreat regardless of the weather, even with chilling temperatures and wet weather, our stay was comfortable and relaxing. The home was everything we hoped it would be, the Hudsons were extremely nice and polite, and had the home ready for us upon our arrival. We are so pleased and look forward to our next opportunity to stay in the Black Mountain area, we will definitely be contacting them again.

Clean, cozy, and in a great location.
We had a great time staying here. The house was close to everything Black Mountain has to offer. A short drive got us to Asheville and the downtown scene.
Overall the house was in great condition, the heating worked perfectly in the cold weather. No complaints.

Great old house, but lots of problems!
We arrived at Montreat Respite House on Sunday the 10th of Sept. at about 4:00 pm. Around 6 pm it started to get chilly and I went to the thermostat to turn the heat on. Nothing happened; so I made my first call to the property manager. He told me the heat did not work, but there were 2 space heaters and plenty of blankets. We got the space heaters going knowing there was no way they would be able to warm a big old 2 story house. We found the blankets, but they were so musty smelling so we had to wash them. Upon opening the washer lid we found a load of towels and sheets that were never dried and had soured. They too had to be washed again. There was also a load in the dryer that had not been put up. We made it thru the night and warmed ourselves the next morning in front of the kitchen stove. That afternoon the wind picked up and the electricity went out. I called the manager again and he came by and said he would report the problem to Duke Power. Meanwhile there was plenty of firewood to build a fire in the fireplace. Later that day we tried to make a fire, but the wood was stacked outside and was too wet to burn. We ended up going into town and buying $50 worth of firewood. That night we sat by the fireplace and took our candles to bed. We spent the next day in Black Mountain until late afternoon when we were informed that the power was back on at the house. The next two days were pretty much the same: sleeping with a space heater in the bedroom, taking a shower with a space heater in the bathroom and warming up in the morning by the kitchen stove. When it was time to clean and lock up the last instruction was to put the trash outside in the trash cans. I wasn't surprised that the trash from the last tenants was still in the trash cans!
I am not usually a complainer, but I strongly feel we should have at least a 50% refund on this transaction. We own rental property ourselves and there is no way in the world we would turn a house over to tenants in the shape this house was in! Nor would we keep it a secret that there is no functioning heating system.
Sincerely, Frank McNeal
