About this house rental
THE MOST ELEGANT, MOST HISTORIC (AND MOST FUN!) RESIDENCE IN ST. MARY'S!!!:
Built in 1801, this house is where Vice-Pres. Aaron Burr stayed while fleeing the authorities after his infamous duel with the Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton!
Hamilton was one of the Founding Fathers. When Thomas Jefferson and Burr both ran for President in 1800, Hamilton supported Jefferson, and was instrumental in defeating Burr – a slight which Burr never forgave.
Hamilton despised Burr and criticized him publicly, which led to Burr's political downfall, the resulting duel, and Hamilton’s death. Burr fled south to the home of his friend Archibald Clark in St. Mary's, Georgia – the very same house that’s now The Federal Quarters!
The house has been known as "the Archibald Clark house" for the past two centuries due to the prominence of Major Clark, its first occupant. He served as the mayor of the town, and President Jefferson appointed him as the Customs Agent to collect taxes from the ships that frequented the port of St. Mary's. During the War of 1812, the British commandeered the house as their headquarters. General Winfield Scott later enjoyed a stay here enroute home from the Indian Wars in Florida.
As initially built, the house had only two rooms on the first floor which served as Clark's law office (now Judge Federal’s law office), plus a living suite upstairs. Clark enlarged the home and the original upstairs suite is where Aaron Burr stayed, until he wore out his welcome and Mrs. Clark invited him to leave.
Now 223 years old, the house is the oldest residence in St. Mary’s.
THE FEDERAL QUARTERS TODAY:
In 2004, Tom Nesbitt, the great-great-great grandson of Archibald Clark, renovated the house, modernized the kitchen, and added other significant upgrades. Nesbitt received the prestigious Excellence in Rehabilitation Award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation in 2005. The house is registered with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Judge Federal and his wife Rebecca purchased the house in early 2019 with the intention of establishing an exclusive inn and opening it to discriminating guests from around the world. The Federals have outfitted The Federal Quarters so that you will enjoy a superlative vacation experience, and, after several months of repairs and renovations, the home is now open to travelers who will appreciate the historical significance of the home.
The Photo Gallery displays each of the following features --
THE FRONT PORCH: Outfitted with rocking chairs, the front porch is a soothing setting where guests can relax and visit with the locals and other visitors passing by, and have a front-row seat for the parades on Mardi Gras, July 4th, the Seafood Festival, the Christmas Holiday parade, and other celebrations!
THE ENTRANCE HALL: Guests at The Federal Quarters step back into history upon entering the inviting Foyer with its hand-painted mural and original heart-pine floors. A quaint half-bath with copper sink is cleverly situated under the main staircase.
THE LIVING ROOM: This large room is elegantly furnished with period furniture and seating for ten, which makes this a warm and unique gathering place. Antique hand-made windows with vintage glass panes remain from the original construction.
THE DINING ROOM: The formal Dining Room seats eight comfortably with an extra-wide table that accommodates serving platters and bowls for "family" style dining. In the corner is a mirrored bar tucked into the original home's 1800's china closet. Table linens, tableware, and serving pieces are provided.
THE SUNROOM: Adjacent to the Dining Room is the Sunroom, which was once an outside porch and is now a well-appointed sitting room. There is a full bathroom, complete with antique claw-foot tub and enclosed toilet immediately off the Sunroom, indicating that it was once a bedroom. (In the event additional sleeping space is needed, or a downstairs bedroom is preferred, this room can be converted into a small bedroom for an extra guest, upon request and with advance notice.)
THE GAME CLOSET: In the event of inclement weather, the Game Closet is outfitted with several classics such as Monopoly, Cribbage, Dominoes, Scrabble, and playing cards for Uno, Poker, Rummy, etc. Guests will also find a guitar, ukelele, harmonica, a roll-up piano keyboard, and kazoo to entertain themselves.
THE HARRY POTTER ROOM: This is a very special “hideaway” for youngsters, located beneath the 1801 rear stairwell (just as Harry Potter would want it!) . Children (especially grandchildren) can play, read, or even sleep in their own secret space.
THE KITCHEN AND BREAKFAST NOOK: The Kitchen is fully equipped with a five-burner gas stovetop, microwave, and conventional oven, a large French-door refrigerator/freezer (a stand-alone freezer chest is located just outside the Kitchen), granite counter-tops, chef's appliances, utensils, and cookware for any culinary fete. Old-growth pine cabinets echo the original finishes. There is a small breakfast nook seating four overlooking the side yard garden.
THE CHICKEN COOP: We should note that there's a chicken coop and “she-shed” in the corner of the backyard complete with five laying hens which provide our guests with fresh eggs daily (well, almost daily, depending on their mood)!
THE MUDROOM: Located between the Kitchen and the Garage, the Mudroom contains storage cabinets with spare parts, hand tools, batteries, light bulbs, cleaning supplies, the on-demand tankless hot water heater, as well as a Fire Extinguisher and First-Aid Kit. It also has a separate cleaning sink.
THE LAUNDRY ROOM: There’s a separate Laundry Room off the Kitchen with high-efficiency large-capacity washer and dryer; laundry detergents and supplies are provided. This room also houses a wine rack, and a wine and beverage cooler.
THE THREE BEDROOMS: The sleeping quarters are all upstairs, accessed via a staircase in the Foyer, another adjoining the Kitchen, and a third from the rear Porch. There are three large Bedrooms, known as the Aaron Burr Suite, the Winfield Scott Suite, and the Alexander Hamilton Suite. The latter is the largest and has its own ensuite bath with shower and enclosed toilet and bidet. Each bedroom has a wide-screen TV with a Roku device enabling access to Netflix, HBO, Showtime, Hulu, etc. The Scott and Burr rooms share a modern bath with an extra-deep jacuzzi tub and enclosed toilet. The Scott and Hamilton rooms share a small bar between them with a Keurig coffee maker, a sink, and small refrigerator. The Burr room has its own coffee bar, mini-fridge, and icemaker.
THE LIBRARY: Also upstairs is a small Library and sitting room, with a writing desk, approximately 300 volumes on a variety of subjects, and a Chess set. Additional volumes are found in the Winfield Scott Room.
The BALCONY AND REAR PORCH: All three Bedrooms have access to the upstairs outside Balcony, furnished with wicker chairs and ceiling fan. Immediately below the balcony is a screened-in porch also furnished with wicker chairs, ceiling fan, and loveseat.
THE OUTSIDE DECK: A new raised Deck was installed in 2019, with bench seats, patio furniture, umbrella, and propane grill, to accommodate outside dining, sunning, reading, etc., ( -- or, as was done recently: a band plus 120 seats for spectators at a catered party!).
THE GARAGE AND PARKING AREA: The spacious Driveway provides private onsite parking for two SUV's or vans. The Garage provides storage space for the Model A Ford, EZ-Go golf cart, two bicycles, golf and fishing equipment, backpacks, beach chairs, beach canopy, outdoor games, etc., all of which are available free of charge for the use of Guests (see Amenities). The Garage is attached to the house and allows access directly into the Kitchen. And if a large group is expected for an event at the property, there are many on-street public parking spaces available directly in front and on the side of the residence.
THE SIDE YARD: A large manicured yard on the north side of the house, inside a white picket fence, features three towering magnolias draped in Spanish moss --
a lovely setting for weddings, receptions, dinner parties, and other events, or for a leisurely game of croquet, lawn darts, or badminton. (Events are allowed onsite subject to prior arrangements with the Proprietors.)
THE APARTMENT: The Property Manager's Apartment is located on-site but completely separate from the Mainhouse, and is not included in the Rental Agreement. The Proprietors occupy the Apartment when the Mainhouse is rented in order to be immediately available in the event of a problem, to answer any questions, or provide assistance.
CAUTION: Guests must be aware that the Bedrooms are on the second floor and there is no elevator available. Accordingly, everyone in the Guest's party must be physically able to safely ascend and descend the stairs to access the Bedrooms. With advance notice, the Sunroom (see above) can be made available as a small downstairs Bedroom.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILITY: The Mainhouse is not wheelchair accessible; however, the Apartment (see above) was specifically designed as a wheelchair accessible residence. It is a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment with a sitting room/library with WiFi and a "smart" TV, washer/dryer, and kitchenette, and is accessed from inside the enclosed Garage. Anyone wishing to lease a wheelchair-accessible property in St. Mary's, for vacation or longer-term, should contact the Proprietors.

We had a wonderful stay. The house was clean and the host was very helpful.

Like a trip back in time we enjoyed learning about the history of the area and the house. Rebecca and Keegan were wonderful hosts on this journey. Good restaurants and ferry to Cumberland Island close by. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
This is by far the best stocked house we have stayed in through VRBO.

We have stayed in a number of VRBO homes throughout the years and I can tell you that this was the best of them all. From the beautiful house itself to the tour provided by Mr. Federal, this is definitely a place worth staying. The Host has thought of everything to make the stay the most comfortable and enjoyable experience. We can't wait to stay here again!

Outstanding house and wonderful hosts. Beautifully appointed and well stocked. Great for history buffs and those looking for a quiet get a way. We stayed for 2 nights on our way further south for Spring Break with our 2 college aged kids and we all wished we would have stayed longer. Our daughter who is a music lover and Hamilton fan thought it was a treat to stay in the same room Aaron Burr once hid out in. Our son enjoyed the military history aspects and we all enjoyed the easy walks into town. Even our dog got in on the action playing with Fritz, the Federal's pup! The highlight though had to be our conversations with the Federals. They are wonderful hosts with great stories and very interesting backgrounds. Can't recommend this unique place more highly. Just stay for more than a couple of nights!

Our family rented The Federal Quarters for our eight year old daughter’s spring break, and we all had the most amazing time. Keegan and Rebecca are the most incredible hosts! They are friendly and helpful and so kind to all of us (especially to our daughter). Keegan and Rebecca have thought about everything that you would need for your visit and even things that you can’t even imagine that you would need. Every detail was perfect. We loved the history of the house and the location (which is short walk to the Cumberland Island Ferry). The beds were so comfortable and relaxing, so we all slept very well at night. There was not one thing that we would change! We were so sad to leave and look forward to visiting again very soon. This vacation was our best one ever!

The history of the house was so interesting. Cute little town. Beds were super comfortable. Our family was amazed by all the southern hospitality! Since we were celebrating Christmas, the house was filled with decorations that included stockings for all. Good time had by all including our many visitors.

Like staying in a museum
This house was built in 1801, so it was like staying in a museum. The owners, who live next door, are so nice, it was like hanging out with family members. We will go back there for sure. But maybe plan for a longer trip.

A great experience!
Keegan and Rebecca are wonderful hosts, everything was fantastic. I enjoyed chatting with them and the house is amazing. The visit began with a tour and explanation of the rich history of the home. I read more about the home and St. Mary’s in the books they had set out in the parlor. The hosts were readily available with everything we could need and much more. We took a walk into town, went for a nice ride in the golf cart, and drove the old Ford. St. Mary’s is such a beautiful, peaceful place to visit.

Relaxing Weekend in St. Marys
Great property all around. On arrival we were met by owners Keegan and Rebecca Federal who graciously provide refreshments and a thorough tour of the property and all the amenities. The house is filled with history and everything needed for the stay. The owners have thought of every possible detail. We wanted a quiet 40th Wedding Anniversary weekend and that is exactly what we got. We did venture to several of the antique stores nearby but the main attraction was relaxing at this amazing property. I highly recommend this property and cannot thank Judge Federal and Rebecca for providing world class hospitality. I hope to be back soon.

Couldn’t be any better!!!
Mr and Mrs Keegan have put so much love, effort and thoughtfulness in this project! It’s truly amazing and if anyone could earn six stars it would be they. From the excellent tour at the start, to the labels on drawers and doors, the stocked soft drinks and the honor bar, the home is fantastic. Then adding the use of their golf cart and the Model A and of course all the history of the house and it adds up to a ‘not found anywhere else” kind of magic.
My wife and 11 and 13 year old boys all had a great time. We see good things coming for St Mary’s over time too. We really enjoyed 401 West and hope more good dining options will keep popping up.
The bottom line is this home is an unforgettable opportunity to live some American history.

Fabulous home, amenities, location, and hosts
Staying at Rebecca and Keegan's historic home was one of the best vacation rental experiences I've ever had! The home was perfectly appointed way above and beyond what I could have expected. Rebecca and Keegan were incredible hosts -- so genuine, helpful, and more than open to the little constructive feedback we did have. They made us feel so welcome and I loved the tour of the house Keegan gave us when we arrived. I booked the house because of the history behind it, and I was so glad I did! I was traveling with my 10, 8, and 6 year olds and I was concerned the house might not be kid-friendly enough for them and I'd be worried about them breaking things, but it was very kid friendly...huge "game" closet crazy well stocked with fun things for the kids to do, plus the Harry Potter under the stairs closet was a big hit! I would definitely recommend this house to anyone considering it.

Do yourself a favor and book this place!
Our family of five LOVED this home! As soon as you arrive, the owners make you feel at home and give you the history of this historic place. Mr. and Mrs. Federal were so helpful and welcoming throughout our stay and all the amenities they provided were top notch. We had so much fun with the 1929 Ford Model A, the golf cart, bikes, and so many other items provided as part of our stay. The home was within walking distance of downtown St. Mary’s and the Cumberland Island ferry, and it was great to ride the bikes (provided by our hosts) to the ferry for an awesome day at the national park. To sum it all up, when it was time to go we didn’t want to leave AND we ALL had a much better time than we even thought we would. Thank you!

Our stay at the Federal House was by far our best Vacation Rental Experience. We loved the history of the house and the quaint little town of St. Mary's. The owners involvement was perfect, informative and professional. Everything we needed for our stay was there and where you would expect to find it. Everything was very well thought out. The house itself was well furnished and immaculate. Everything a vacationer could want to have at their disposal, from games to backpacks to cooking equip to the Model A, Golf Cart and Bikes. Keegan and Rebecca were very gracious and helpful, making us feel welcome and appreciated. We would highly recommend the Federal House and intend on staying there again in the future.

We weren't throwing away our shot to see the home where Aaron Burr stayed following his infamous duel, and our Hamilton-fan 12-year-old loved sleeping in the same room as Burr had. Yet, the house offered so much more for everyone in our family. Amazing history, beautiful space for four tired travelers to spread out, gracious and engaging hosts, a convenient location, and more thoughtful amenities than we could have imagined. Everything we needed was there. We have traveled all fifty states and six continents and this is one of the few places we plan to visit again. It's that special.

I do not feel that I have adequate literary skills to accurately describe how amazing this home truly is! The history, in itself, is super nifty but the owners really make this place magical! Every single detail has been thoroughly thought out. Due to weather we had to shift plans for our trip to Cumberland Island and Keegan was morethan gracious to accommodate us! We will definitely be back! Do NOT hesitate for one second to book this amazing property!

We had a delightful stay in St Mary's. Keegan and Rebecca are great hosts. They have thought of everything! The kids loved the toy closet and the Harry Potter hidden room. The home comes with amazing history and Keegan and Rebecca took the time to walk us through everything and answer any questions we had. We loved driving the golf cart and Model T around the cute downtown just blocks away from the house. Highly recommend a visit to St. Marys and staying with these gracious and kind hosts. We will stay here again when we return.

Wonderful slice of history with touches of modern day comfort.
Keegan and Rebecca are both fantastically accommodating hosts. They are very responsive and flexible. They have somehow managed to maintain the authenticity of this wonderful house while adding modern day comforts. The bedroom room are extremely comfortable, the kitchen is perfectly stocked and the “Harry Potter” room was a favorite for all ages.
I would highly recommend this house! Zero issues from start to finish. It was a wonderful pleasure, I felt like I was staying in a favorite relative’s house, not a rental.

Relaxing , wonderful stay !
The property is full of charm, beautifully decorated with well appointed furnishings. Keegan and Rebecca both could not have been more accommodating. We took a drive around the riverfront in both the Model T and the Golf cart.
The house is full of history yet with the comforts of today. We could not recommend for any couple or family to get away and relax.
We look forward to our next visit. Thank you both for such wonderful place that folks can get away .

An Amazing Historical House
We stayed at the Federal Quarters for a long weekend in beautiful St. Marys. The property is immaculate. The attention to detail in each room is remarkable. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the owners who gave a historical tour of the property. The house itself is rich in history as is the town of St. Marys. Every amenity you could want was here. If you are a history fan, this is a definite must, and if you are not, this still a top notch property. Our hosts were gracious and available if we needed anything. They were helpful in arranging the ferry to Cumberland, and acquiring bikes and kayaks for weekday outings. The kitchen has everything you would need. We took advantage of using the golf cart and the Model A. This made cruising around the shore/ neighborhood an adventure. The property is within the historical district so everything is in walking distance.
The property owners have thought of everything down to the smallest detail to make your stay an amazing experience. This was the best VRBO we have ever stayed at. I don't think any property in the future could equal the hospitality and amenities offered at the Federal Quarters.
Thank you, Mr and Mrs. Federal for an amazing experience and weekend getaway!

They thought of everything!
This is a historic and authentic home which has been updated with the conveniences that count. The hosts are extremely gracious and personable. St. Mary’s is a quaint Southern town with a downtown and waters edge that is undergoing revitalization.
The amenities and furnishings of the home are first class. Enjoy coffee on the porch in a rocking chair in the morning or a glass of wine on the back balcony at night.
Possibly the best VRBO that we have stayed in and we will definitely be back.
Simply amazing!
