About this cottage rental
The property is a Grade II listed thatched cottage, recently refurbished to a modern standard but in simpatico with its history, in a beautiful Devon village (Sticklepath, 5 miles from Okehampton) on the northern side of Dartmoor National Park. Access to the wonders of Dartmoor is out the back door, no need to drive! There is a leat (run off from the water mill at Finch Foundry) running through the front garden. Larger, formal garden at rear, then across the river by a private foot bridge to a further 2/3 acre within the property, with the river forming 70% of its boundary. The garden and surrounding countryside are a delight. There are over 1,500 bulbs in the garden providing a phantasmagoria of colour during the growing season. I even own a small island that you can visit when the river is low. The wiring has been updated and there is an installation and portable appliance testing report certificates (dated 17/2/20) available on request.
Entrance is through a solid door into the formal dining room. The kitchen has been renovated with a large electric oven, gas hob, slate countertops, and wooden shelves. Large back sitting room receives sun most of the day and provides a delightful view of the back garden. Sitting room has a log burner and, wood is provided free of charge (I grow it) to keep you warm and snug. Guidance on lightning the fire is provided in a separate document. Seating on chairs and sofa, and can seat 6+, and an informal dining area that can seat 8. We have most of our meals there because of the view. There is a 43in smart TV with an internet connection for your use. However, we are assuming you don't come here to watch TV. Sport shown at the Taw River Inn, 50 yards away, on a much larger screen.
Upstairs are 3 double rooms: 2 rooms with 2 single beds each, all 6 ft x 3ft (feel free to make doubles), and a one room with a Queen sized double, 5ft x 6 1/2 ft, with a portable cot if required. There is a large bathroom and a larger than usual bath with a delightful view of the garden. All linen is supplied and included in the rental fees, and you can use the washing machine and clothesline/dryer if required.
Outside the house but close by is a separate toilet as well as a laundry room with washing machine and a dryer, and a large fridge, and another shower with a pump and its own heat. So, we have 2 bathrooms, one outside from the main house, with the water independently heated for both.
You can enjoy the formal garden with 2 tables, and assorted chairs, and a couple of garden benches.
Access to the moor is across the foot bridge leading from the formal garden and through the field at the rear of the house. We have friends growing vegetables at the top of the field and you may be able to get some fresh produce from them. During the warmer weather we wade and sit in the river using the stone steps down to the river near the gate by the bridge . There are swimming holes further up the river closer to Belstone.
How I spend your money: Patti's Wood. I have been working over the last 3 years with a retired forester who lives in the village, turning my field into a wood. The field is approximately 4 acres and is across the bridleway from the entrance to the main property. The wood is dedicated to my wife and best friend of 40 years who died in late 2019. The wood has been planted with mainly native trees and shrubs, which include alders, poplars, beech, English oak, hazel, hawthorn, willow, etc. There are approximately 200 trees in situ. The wood is my own green initiative and established to absorb carbon dioxide and increase the habitat for local wildlife. I am funding the project through some of the money that you pay for accommodation. It is a gift to subsequent generations.
If you want to experience the charm of a large old house built in the traditional style, then welcome. It has all the mod cons you need for a pleasant stay including central heating and a well-equipped kitchen. Check the reviews from previous guests for an independent assessment.
Please note that this house is my main residence and I let it out when I am away for work or related matters. The block of unavailability, in Spring/early Summer, and late Autumn, is when I will be living there. The house has been available for short term lets from mid-1990, and we bought it from those owners and renovated it while living there.

We had an idyllic four days in Mark’s lovely thatched cottage- great position backing on to the moor - amenities were fabulous including a fire for one chilly evening. Garden is lovely with a variety of British birds feeding at the back window. Check-in was ultra easy and Mark provided lots of useful information about the cottage and useful tips about things to do. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We enjoyed a lovely long weekend at Tawleat in Devon. Mark was an incredibly helpful host, providing us with recommendations in the area as well as answering questions that we had in the lead up to the booking.
We absolutely loved the house, and it was perfect for our stay. There were three large rooms, the kitchen was well equipped and the wood fire is incredible and makes the place lovely and warm. It has a distinct old charm to it (with the thatch roof) but also modernised.
The location is incredible, you go out the back of the house to some incredible walks up dartmoor and the village has a great pub. You are also close to the amenities of Okehampton, which is a short drive away.
It was the perfect place for a getaway to the countryside and would recommend it to anyway looking for a break in Devon.

I stayed in Mark's lovely house with my fiancée and our parents and it was great. The fire keeps the place nice and warm, and the beds were very comfortable. Perfect location to explore the local area.

Another wonderful stay in Mark's beautiful home.
Mark has thought of everything you might need to make your stay a enjoyable experience.
All of the rooms have a lovely cosy feeling and you can happily cacoon yourself away from the world.
Lovely walks behind the house with the whole of Dartmoor to be explored from the bottom of the garden.
Our only negative would be visiting at the start of November at lot of the tourist attractions across the area (including the interesting National Trust Finch Foundry a few doors up) close for the season at the wnd of October, but thats beyond even Marks control

We have just had another great stay in this lovely Devon thatched cottage. It is the perfect place for an intergenerational holiday, always welcoming, clean and warm, smelling of wood ash,old spice and polished wood.
The grandchildren love it for the outside streams, building dams, climbing rocks, swings and general exploring. The parents love it as there is no stress when they come back wet and dirty. Sensible flooring and the downstairs shower, (accessible from outside so makes cleaning even easier) shrug off muddy boots. A boon for any walker. There is even a spa bath if you are brave enough to go into the stream at the end of the garden
It is possible to stay at home for the whole holiday leaving your car untouched but the sea is only an hours drive way(Bude or Exmouth - excellent fish and chips) Walks for all levels can be accessed from the back door, there is a good local shop and pub across the road for dinner (and Waitrose deliver) Cupboards full of family games and jigsaws. Star wars monopoly lasted us 3 days and we were still talking to each other at the end-just.

The cottage is lovely although it was not made clear through the listing that the second bathroom and shower were actually outside of the house.
While the beds were comfortable, and the house had all the amenities necessary, it was a little lacking in the cleanliness department.
It does give the authentic English countryside feel, and while the house is fully functional and well-maintained, there was a lot of evidence of damp, the house smelt of damp.
Overall, it was a good stay. We all enjoyed it, and the house was charming.

Tawleat exceeded our expectations in every way. We had a very comfortable and cozy stay in a very well equipped house. The property, gardens, and surrounding location provided our family with so much to do and see. A hikers paradise but also incredible for families with children. We loved it so much we even extended our stay. We will certainly be back to make more memories.

What a lovely place! Had everything we needed, being able to light the fire all day on a wet and windy weekend was bliss! Plenty of space for us all including the dogs. Dogs were very safe in the garden and the ability to walk out onto the hills for long walks meant no-one had to drive, made for a memorable and truly excellent time. Thank you.

I can’t think of a home and location we have enjoyed more! Ideally located with foot access to beautiful Dartmoor National Park, spotlessly clean, and well appointed. The cottage was so cozy we didn’t mind the rain and we all thoroughly enjoyed the river to the back, creek in front, beautiful garden, and back property. Our only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer. Thank you for sharing your spot with the world Mark!

Our family had an amazing time staying at this property and enjoying the wonderful location. It’s perfectly located for visiting all of Devon and Cornwall, including the famous Tintagel Castle,
The local villages also had great pubs, which made the stay super convenient.

The house was a home from home; everything you could want & clean too. The owner was quick, considerate and helpful with any queries I had.
Paying was a nightmare. Perhaps you could put on your website that if someone is having problems paying they should try it using a different browser. When we did that, it all went through beautifully.

Our best accommodation of the trip. A large comfortable home.
Warm, comfortable beds, chefs kitchen, lovely open fire with unlimited wood (which is not usually supplied) and endless hot water.
We would have been happy to spend all our time in the house and not touring.
One minute walk to the village pub which served typical English pub fare at great value.
Mark was great to deal with and even emailed the first day to see that we were settled.
We would love to return
We would love to come back

This is a beautiful cottage set in a perfect location for walks onto the moor. The wood burner in the living room really made the whole cottage so cosy and the selection of books amazing. Could have spent the whole time in the cottage relaxing! Wonderful garden with the river running through at the bottom and fully enclosed so our dog could happily run around safely. Owner was very accommodating keeping us updated prior to our arrival. Can't recommend this place highly enough and would definitely return here again when next visiting this beautiful area of Devon.

House exactly as described, backing onto River Taw, just a few minutes walk from the moor — clean, cosy, well-equipped.

What's not to love about this delightful character cottage on the edge of Dartmoor? The Taw river runs at the bottom of the garden, the village has a great pub and a stores/tea room (breakfast to die for) and Okehampton, two miles away, has all the shops you need. Inside is a welcoming mix of traditional furnishing and modern comforts. If you love Devon it's perfect.

A calm and beautiful time warp
The property is beautifully positioned and lovingly maintained. Although the entire cottage is a period piece, all facilities are up to date and work excellently. Comfortable, well equipped and calm.

Such a great stay at Tawleat
We all loved Mark's property so much. Such a great homey place with lovely house and property and great access to walking the Dartmoor area, great local pubs and even historic inns in walking distance. Mark's place has everything for a family to enjoy, great kitchen, books, fireplace, nice beds and bathrooms, and even good working laundry. Everything was just great.

This was a lovely property with comfy beds and great facilities. Things were a bit dusty and glasses needed washing before use but it didn't deter our stay. Everything was there that we needed. The surrounding countryside is beautiful, the pub was great and the villagers really friendly

A fabulous cottage
Stayed for a few late autumn days in glorious sunshine and hard frosts - a lovely house and perfect Dartmoor weather. It's a rare treat to stay in what feel like a real home rather than something furnished and equipped out of a "this is what the modern customer wants" catalogue. On top of this, the garden is beyond fantastic

Cosy and charming cottage with an attentive host
Mark was a brilliant host and answered all our questions before arrival. Our remote check-in was clear and the cottage was set up with useful notes and information. Sticklepath is a lovely village in a great location. We had a glorious few days exploring the Devon coastline and Dartmoor itself.

FABULOUS COTTAFE
We booked this cottage in August as we had a family weddding to attend as well as some significant birthdays to celebrate; tt was absolutely perfect for us - plenty of space with a stunning garden leading down to the river. Theres a great kitchen and two big dining tables where we spent much time eating, drinking, playing games and chatting. It felt like a home from home and Mark could not have been more helpful. The village is lovely and it's a great spot from which to visit Dartmoor and other local attractions. We cn't wait to go back

Brilliant property
This is a really nice house. The owner sent us helpful advice, so we found it straight away. It was spotlessly clean on arrival. As a family group of 5 adults, it was spacious. The house was generously provided, and we found everything we needed. It’s a two-minute walk to a good pub and a village shop. Don’t hesitate to book it.

Summer Holidays
Great place to relax and spend time with the family. Fully equipped with everything you need, Mark was a fantastic host with good communication. If you love the outdoors this is the place to be, the house is about 300 years old but we'll maintained, massive garden with a stream running at the front and back of the house. Our family of 4 thoroughly enjoyed it and dog loved it too. Amenities are close by and a town of Hockihampton is not too far either. Overall a great stay!
