About this house rental
City of Durango Permit #17-029
Our 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom home was built in the early 1890s and was one of the first homes built in Durango. The home is on the Animas River and across the street from Fassbinder park and just a 5 minute walk to the heart of historic downtown Durango as well the Animas River Trail.
The historic home features a private stone path to just above the Animas River which crosses the old dirt driveway which was used to park the horse and carriage and access the home.
Updated but retains its historic charm with exposed brick, arch windows and crown molding.
The gourmet kitchen includes professional-grade cooking appliances and is fully stocked with utensils, cookware and dinner ware. Beyond the kitchen, is the den / media room, with large TV, sofa and lounge-y furniture and gas fireplace.
A basement-level utility room includes full-sized washer and dryer, and is large enough for bike, ski and other outdoor gear storage.
In town, the paved Animas River Trail, accessed by a short walk from this home, runs the entire length of town along the river, making for easy commuting to parks, restaurants, a day spa and other downtown destinations, as well providing an excellent fitness and scenery corridor. Guests can walk to the Animas River Trail with a choice of two separate paths; one is just a few doors away on the Main Avenue bridge over the river, and the other is via a suspension footbridge about a block away. .
Bed Configuration:
Master Bedroom - King bed with TV and Ensuite Bath (2nd Floor)
Bedroom 2 - Queen bed, (2nd Floor)
Bedroom 3 - Queen bed, (2nd Floor)
Please note: There are security cameras located on the outside of the front door and laundry room door. Both point out into the yard. There is another in the entry pointing toward the front door. There are no other cameras inside the home.
Stay with us and we offer DISCOUNTS on both summer (white water rafting, horseback riding etc.) and winter (ski/snowboard rentals, sleigh rides, snowmobile tours etc.) activities.
Vacation Rental Collective has the perfect Durango Vacation Rental, Durango Cabin, Durango AirBnB, or Durango VRBO for you and your group! Whether you're hiking, fishing, biking, skiing at Purgatory Ski Resort, or enjoying Durango’s one-of-a-kind restaurants VRC has your perfect private lodging accommodations.
Please note that, like most properties in the area, this home does not have AC, as it is uncommon for homes at this elevation. Temperatures inside the property are easily managed by using fans and opening the windows at night when temperatures drop into the 40s.

Recognizing that this is an older property, the overall cleanliness needs some attention. The outside covered patio (featured picture) is a nice size but the proper cushions were not on the furniture, but rather stacked and dirty off to the side. No central AC so opening windows is fine, but most lacked screens. And there was a considerable traffic noise as well.

Great location. Walking distance to town along river walk. Convenient to great hiking and fishing.

The house is in a great neighborhood and very convenient; however the window shades and screens need to be repaired. It is hard to keep the house cool when the screens fall out letting bugs in and not all the shades worked, so it was harder to keep the house cool. We enjoyed the ample room for family.

Overall the house was nice, clean on the inside. This is definitely a historic home, with it's nuances. As of June 2024 the outside was still not kept up, we couldn't use that patio furniture as it was very dirty. The labyrinth in the back is not walkable because it is over grown with weeds. The primary bed is very very soft, made it feel like sleeping on a pillow, kind of felt like a deflating air mattress so not great. The upstairs was warm the first night, got better as we learned when to open and close the windows, not all of them had screens. The primary shower floor, while beautiful to look at, hurts the feet, like standing on a rocky river bed. The location is great for walking.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely property in Durango. All the amenities and close to downtown and the river.

I think this was a great house and we were comfortable.
This house has some repair issues that need to be attended to, a needed explanation of where to turn on entertainment lights, and a maintenance plan on the yard and grounds. (screens for windows, broken blinds, middle bedroom was hot, hanging wires for speakers I think, dark outdoor patio area, yards in pretty bad shape)
Overall it was a nice stay and experience but there are many things that need attention.

The property has great updated bathrooms and kitchen. We loved the location of the property. We walked to the river and the downtown restaurants. The park across the street was great for the kids and grandkids to play on.
The record heat wave made our stay uncomfortable but the staff helped in everyway they could.
An improvement of an added railing to the steep path down to the river would make it safer for the grandparents to go and enjoy. And since the chairs are close to a significant drop to the river a railing would add safety for the kids.
We love Durango and hope to return again soon.

House is older and a little quirky. Great kitchen. Location served us well as it is kind of at the half way point. Not in the hub of things but very convenient to both ends of town. We had deer in the yard each day. That was cool. Some things require deferred maintenance to dress the place up. As you approach to the front door
The yard is unkept. The personnel door on the garage is delapidated. There are raised beds for gardening which are all falling apart and no plants giving off a poor vibe. But despite these things, ours was an enjoyable stay. We loved Durango

What a great place

Quirky property but great for 6 adults. Outdoor space was perfect for game playing and enjoying the weather. Had an avid fisherman in the group and he loved the easy access to the river. Location to everything was fantastic. It’s not pristinely clean, and many windows missing screens, my husband weed wacked to get us to the river. It’s an old house - so enjoy the character. Beds were super comfy.

Nice house across from a park with a playground. We were just slightly disappointed that the yard was overgrown.

What you see is not what you get! That seems to be the case in most VRBO rentals anymore. Not what it used to be!! Anyway – this 'old house' was what attracted us for a 3-state family gathering. We loved the outdoor patio and the trail down to the river.... the on-line version...
The Good: The house was clean! Tuscan décor is very nice! The kitchen was well furnished. But not so good: Very disappointed in the fry pans–only 2 and both stuck badly. Only 1saucepan. Stove needs some repair/cleaning – it does not light well. Oven very dirty. But overall the kitchen was fun. Good beds. Good bathrooms except for the river-rock shower in master.... more...
The Bad: Only tiny cars (with no racks) will fit in the garage! BBQ was gross! Those pretty river-rocks on the shower floor are hard/uneven/extremely slippery when wet. They need a bathmat! Months ago someone complained that there were no ‘back’ cushions on the living room couch–I was assured it had been taken care of–NOT–still no cushions(pic1) – just a couple of throw pillows. Room not usable-although very pretty.
The Ugly: Grass overgrown–weeds 2' high. Patio and front walk area to the door are in really bad shape–needs a LOT of TLC. Not at all what you see on the website. I hosed down all of the cobwebs!! The path to the river is not accessible–except by goats!(pic2) Very dangerous for anyone under 10 or over 60. They need to install a handrail like the neighbor did. The beautiful rock formation, seen on website, is now completely covered with weeds!(pic3) I would not have known it was there had I not seen the picture. Their high cleaning fee does not cover the grounds – obviously!
I owned a vacation rental for 10 years and I am being critical because it takes so little to make a place “pretty” as well as clean. When the first thing you see is overgrown grass and weeds as you walk thru the gate – they have not made a good impression!! I would not rent it again because of the outside. Grass and building need a lot of work! I recommend it to a family who is 'younger' and is also 'not bothered by such things'.
Close to town. We had fun. Durango is always fun. Even when it rains every day!! Good restaurants/bars: Chimayo, Carver, Derailed Pour House, Primi, and fun Animas Brewery for good beer, light bites and watching the train go by!!!

The decor was tasteful and and the place in general luxurious. Location is perfect; right next to the riverwalk and walking distance to the cultural center of Durango. Highly recommend.

No AC- renters BEWARE!
House was quaint and besides uncomfortable furniture the biggest issue was no AC. Nowhere in listing did it point that out. They sent me a check in email that day (which received at airport) saying no AC but shouldn’t a problem. That might be the case in spring and fall but it was high 90’s the entire time and miserable. We finally just said screw it and went to hotel. Of course mangers response was “just open the windows you’ll be fine”. NOT the case. Beware if you are coming June-Aug and the listing NEEDS to point this out. We would not have booked this if we knew and we spent $2,000 that was just flushed down the toilet

Fantastic stay
I really cannot say enough good things.
This property is beautiful.
I stayed here with my husband and parents and sister for our son’s Fort Lewis graduation..
The location was perfect. Everything we needed was there.
The towels were wonderful. The beds comfortable. The kitchen was filled with all the tools we needed. The house was just incredible. You are within 5 minutes of the paved walking area along the river.
The covered outdoor seating area was amazing.
We were able to see the lunar eclipse by the fire pit.
Everyone had a very good time.
I do want to mention two things, that are applicable for older people. And possibly littles, but we didn’t have any small children with us.
The bedrooms are all on the second floor, and the stairs were a little steep for my parents, who are in their eighties!
The lovely area down by the Animas River is very steep, with irregular steps. My dad, who should never had gone down there, fell a few times!!
Those are my problems, though.
The property is quite magical.

Charmed in Durango
A large well-equipped house in a lovely neighborhood located right on the Animas River. Easy walk to Historic Downtown Durango. Interesting eclectic decor with a Tuscan theme. A pleasure to come home to after each day’s adventures.

Great location for families with kids, but property lacking attention
We (family of 4 with young kids) stayed for spring break to ride the train. Grandparents came along. We were able to walk across the street to the park and over the walking bridge to the powerhouse. We biked along the river trail, you have to go behind the burger King to access the trail by bike (there are closer stairs on food) or go across main street. A wonderful little town and time of year.
The house provided plenty of space to spread out and was clean. However, there were a number of issues that make me hesitate to recommend the place. First and foremost, the beds and pillows, especially in the master and little blue room were far too soft for the adults in our party. My seven yo didn't mind. Grandparents had the master and said the stone floor shower with their thinning foot pads was the most painful shower they ever had. There are extra light switches that don't appear to do anything and the lights for the entry hall have switches in different rooms. Other reviews and guests in the house book mentioned these should be labeled and I agree. Management was very responsive to complaints and messages, but it was clear they never visit the property. Housekeeping is expected to report problems. The house was clean with plenty of dishes, but the trash in the garage was over flowing. There were extra tv remotes and it was very confusing to figure out with no instructions on how to view anything. The green couch is missing pillows seen in the photos -it is too deep. The gate to the river is missing a latch and deer must be walking through because there are plentiful deer scat in the yard. Management provided a new toaster, which works well! Overall we enjoyed the house and our vacation!

Great location
Loved the house. Artsy decor in every room. Beds were comfortable. Kitchen is well equipped and commercial quality. We cooked in a few nights and enjoyed the local restaurants. Ore house is a must. Ken and Sues is great too.
Good location. You can safely walk to downtown as well as supermarkets. Very cozy home.

We loved staying a the Pake Avenue home. It was spacious, cozy and the kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. The location cannot be beat and we enjoyed every minute -- we will be back. Shout out to Cindy at VRC for taking care of all our needs, recommending great restaurants, and quickly answering all our questions. Durango and the Park home surpassed our expectations.

We loved the house and the location was better than it appeared on the map. My only suggestion would be to repair the blinds. In the 2 secondary bedrooms, one would not go up and one (in the blue room) would not go down. We had to put a towel up over the window. Also, the shower head in the primary bathroom drips. Also, I think better pillows would make a big difference. But it was clean and fun and had everything we needed and more. None of these issues would prevent us from staying there again. Really a wonderful property!

Could be more comfortable
The house is fine, layout is interesting. Master bedroom bed needs to be replaced. We were there in the winter, so can't comment on outdoor lounge area which is a large part of the house. Back of house overlooks a 4-lane bridge with river below. Durango is fantastic! Enjoy your trip!

Beautiful Historic Home
The house is beautiful and the location is great. Only complaint was there were window sills and part of the master bath that appeared to be overlooked by the cleaning crew.
