We almost didn't book this one because of a review saying "grandma's" house. SO GLAD WE TOOK THE CHANCE AND NOW CAN MAKE OUR OWN INTERPRETATION.
This house has an awesome layout, with inside stairs to the fishing and cars.
The furniture is very comfortable. The lazy boys, couch and beds are perfect for a beach house. After a long day at the beach you just want to fall deep into the couch and relax.
Fishing- this house is just off the main canal and every night a huge family of sand trout came in to hunt in the peir light. Two days were loaded with crap. Caught two huge stone crab, and live shrimp in the traps. Catfish and groapers during the day.
We have rented over 6 different canal homes, this by far is the best and we have now found the beach house we will rent year after year.
Porches: the back porch is perfect all day with the shade cover. The front porch is the place to be on the evening with full shade and a beautiful view of another canal. Thats right- views from both sides of the house!
Kitchen: big and open so if your the one trapped cooking, you still feel part of the group.
Rooms: grandparents got the master with their own bathroom. We loaded the kids in the bunk bed room. Lots of space to play with toys and a tv. Mom and dad got the other bedroom with is "kinda" a jack and jill to the kids with a shared bedroom. The other queen bedroom, was actually bigger than the master.
Decor: its full of cute beach collectible trinkets! Perfect beach house!

Run down property
100% the most run down vacation rental I’ve ever stayed in. Like walking into your grandmas house that hasn’t had updating in 30 years. Siding is falling apart, decks are unsafe, appliances barely work, mattresses are 20 years old.
DO NOT BOOK. YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED

Great for boating
Property was not as nice as the pics showed but we still loved it

Good location
The home is good size and has most everything you need. The inside was also clean. The beds and linens could use some updates. The outside is not in good shape (decking, siding and paint). The inside was much better than the exterior.

The storm. Need I say more. No electricity. No water. Below freezing in the house.
Good up until the storm

Poorly maintained property
It looks great in pictures but the property has had little upkeep and is in decline. The neighbors must hate the owners because the house is falling apart and is an eyesore.

Exactly as listed and reviews were spot on so we knew what to expect.
Everything was as pictured and reviewed. I don't have any complaints and would stay here again. The only suggestions would be a little sprucing up the property and definitely need to replace the mattresses. Also there were no cookie sheets or potholders. All of that is easy fixes and didn't hinder our stay.

Summer getaway
Nice location for summer getaway. Easy access to beach, convenience store and grocery store. The house was well equipped with anything you need. We enjoyed fishing and crabbing in the underneath.

No yard
House is old and musty, but it was clean and had plenty of room. I needed a house with a fenced in yard as I was bringing my dogs. The yard is fenced, however not completely if you have small dogs. There is no grass except for a very small patch in the front of the house, which is not fenced in. It was very inconvenient to have to put our dogs on leashes and take them out front to potty, especially in the middle of the night. This home is not dog friendly as advertised.

Lovely home in quiet neighborhood
Loved the house. all the plants around the house made it feel tropical. Lots of seating in different areas so never bored sitting in the same place the whole time... especially important since shelter in place started the day after arrival. It was so quiet and neighbors on both sides very friendly. Only a couple of problems...one recliner was broken and the bed wasn't that comfortable....could use a new mattress. But overall it was great...would definitely stay again. Really loved it!!!

Fun on the canal
We learned how to crab, fish, and kayak! We ate the crab we caught and it was delicious! There’s so much seating space! No one was on top of each other! Fantastic family fun!

Relaxing and Homey rental
Rental offers a very relaxing atmosphere. Of course there were furnishings that need updating, but overall the place invokes a sense of relaxation and contentment! Kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to prepare meals and enjoy family time. Grandsons caught croaker, catfish and crabs while we watched and cooked on the grill. If you want perfection, this rental is not for you but you will really miss out on a great time! Comfortable with the necessities was just what our family needed this stay. We would most definitely stay again!

The owner was very nice. He called to make sure the water was not flooding the property. Place needs new mattresses. The kitchen was spacious and met our needs. Nice for outside entertaining.

Neat House!
We all loved this home in Jamaica Beach. This home was very sturdy, and wont sway in the wind like a lot of pier homes. The floorplan was perfect, the kitchen was nice and big. We love all the different options for sitting areas outside. The neighbors were friendly and quiet. The beds were comfy, and so was the living room furniture. The TV in the living was pretty big, and the wifi speeds were great. We loved the fishing opportunities the dock provided, we caught sting ray, croakers and catfish. We would stay here again and recomend it to anyone.

Work needed
Exterior: Paint the exterior! Would also love to see the decks painted and fixed up more. There was too much loose wood. Also, hithe 1st floor was too cluttered and there was no light to enjoy the seating area. It was entirely too dark, which caused a bunch of issues especially when you are getting back and have to carry bags AND a baby up to the 2nd floor. Also, the screen door needs to have a separate lock (NOT a combination lock). Trees need to be trimmed so that patrons can actually enjoy outside.
Interior: update bathrooms...remove outdated wallpaper and shower curtain liners must be replaced or cleaned more thoroughly. Update curtains in the bedrooms, have a TV for every room. Find a way to stop large bugs from entering home at night. (These would crawl from the wall, but only at night!) Kitchen and dining room were nice and clean, as well as spacious. Rooms were also nice sizes w plenty of closet space.
Overall, I would not rent the Bent Rod Canal home again mainly due to the lack of porch lights, the upstairs decks, and the insects in the house. If Ryson fixed (attempted to remedy)these issues, then my family would give them another shot!

Leave your boat at Home!
My family and I stayed at the ‘Bent Rod’ house for 3 nights to relax and do some bay fishing. The home itself was a bit older, but overall it was ‘as advertised’ as the pictures show the age. A few things I’d like to point out, as it would’ve changed my mind on booking this house, as I was there specifically to fish each day.
First of all - The description mentions “a floating dock, which you can tie off at once you launch your boat at the marina”. In theory this sounds okay, in reality, not so much. During high tide, the dock is completely under water, so you can’t tie your boat off as your boat would float into the dock – scratching the boat. Further, there were screws sticking out from the dock, so even if tides were low, you wouldn’t want to tie a boat to it. At low tide, the dock was only an inch or 2 over the water line, still preventing you from tying off. If I had known this, I wouldn’t have stayed here.
The mosquitos! The ground level of this property is covered with palm trees, bushes, etc. It felt like a greenhouse, and is not manicured. This is a prime breeding ground for mosquitos… and yes, they can fly up to the upstairs decks!
There is a gas grill on the property. If you use the last of the propane, it’s your responsibility (in the middle of grilling) to go to the corner gas station and pay $35 to get the tank refilled… if you rent this property, best of luck to you with getting a tank with enough propane!
At the end of the day, would I stay here again? NO! There are better places in Jamaica Beach, for less money. If you do stay here – leave the boat at home, bring mosquito repellant, and you may want to bring a propane tank too!
To end on a positive note – I will say that when I brought up my issues & concerns to Ryson (the property management), they were helpful and did what they could to make things right. With the said issues, the owner was asked give an ‘after the fact’ discount – particularly for the dock issue that’s misleading in the description, but the owner was not willing to give anything back.
