You get what you pay for. Smells of smoke and mildew. Roach trap in the bathroom. Be careful using the deadbolt; it might take some time and brute force to leave the room.

It was in a good neighborhood. Staff was helpful and nice. The room could use some work.

This place was nasty. It stunk of mold and mildew. Was enough to put me into an asthma attack. Didn't dare touch anything

Kind of a little dive. Bugs in the drawers and smelled of cigarettes. Just layed on top of covers

Completely run down place. No soap. Fraction of a roll of toilet paper with no spare. Roach trap under the sink. No knob on the shower faucet. Didn’t smell good.

Room smelled like Mold the moment you walk in, roach traps full of roaches all over the place. Shower handle broken, stains in the pillows and sheets. I complained to the manager and received a full refund.

Everything that can go wrong went wrong. The room was supposed to be non-smoking but full of smoke and nicotine stains. The entire bed and pillows were covered with disgusting stains and all sorts of bugs were crawling. The owner/front-desk staff just shrugged it. I checked out immediately and they denied any refunds.

It was an extremely small room
* advertisement says it had air conditioning. It had one vent in the general quarters that did not cool the room so the stay was hot to the point we were sweating ( if you wanted to feel the cold air you had to sit literally right next to it)
*Fridge did not work right wasn’t cold at all
first thing I did when I walked in, was check for bedbugs
(I did not find any)
We sit down and started watching TV and little things started to pop out at me
* the skirting of the bed was stained and look like to be burned with cigarettes
(this was supposed to be a non-smoking room)
* there was some sort of liquid that a drip down the wall and it had started yellowing, which usually happens with bodily fluid (Screams hasn’t been cleaned in a while)
* when the light reflected right, you can see hand prints all over the wall, which means that was some sort of residue over the wall for you to be able to see where somebody and put their hands
* Cobwebs were all around the room
* furniture was beat the hell, and or broken

My son was graduating from Iowa State and I booked a room for one night in AMes long before the graduation. Plans changed and I needed to stay a couple more nights. By the time I looked for rooms in AMes for the weekend, everything started at $500 a night. I expaned my search down to Des Moines. I was looking for something cheap. I figured all I needed was a bed and a shower. I found this Palace Inn for $70 a night and thought what the heck. I booked two nights. When I got there the road in front of the place was closed and there was routed over the the other side of the road. There was a gravel path open to get to the property. No big deal. The place looked run down. When I got out of the care and walked up to the entrance, it reeked of cigarette smoke before you even got inside. I went into the "lobby". It was the room the size of a closet. There was a small plexiglass window over a little counter with a hole in the bottom of the window. I couldn't see anyone behind the glass. I heard a voice say " can I help you?" I said "I have a reservation". What's the name?" I told him my name. I didn't hear anything for a while. I said "don't you have the reservation?" "Oh I got you". " ID and credit card". I slipped my license and credit card through the hole in the window. I got the key. "Number 7. Pull around behind the snow plow." The room also reeked of smoke. Beds were fine. Shower was hot. Wi Fi worked. It was quiet. Not the cleanest. For $70 it was OK.

This place is fine for short stays. I slept here one night while driving from Denver to Toronto. I got in around 9pm, grabbed some food down the street from the Burger King, slept, got up and left. The room was small, dusty, it relied on a space heater for heat, and the curtains didn't shield as much light as I desired. The Inn is located in an industrial part of town, so no street noise, but not many amenities in the area. When I got there, only one other car was in the parking lot, but when I woke up the place was mostly full; so I guess others have the same idea when booking a room at this place. At the time of this review, there is road construction, which makes the turn off slightly hard to spot.

Definitely a back-alley hotel. Spend the extra $10 to stay somewhere else.. Not worth $60 a night.

Dirty, run down, out of date, and disorganized.

Not sure why it had an 8 rating. Although it was clean, it is very old, didn't provide shampoo, and the internet didn't work. They also had no record of my reservation. However, it was clean and comfortable enough for the cost.

Wish I could have found another hotel and got my money back, the room smelled, the bed and pillows were hard and the front desk called on my check out day at 10 a. M. And said to have 1 hour to get out! Never again!

Hotel room very outdated....shower head was old and I needed to do a backbend to get hair wet. Room smelled a little musty when we checked in. We had to make a hasty departure though, due to sewage smell in the room. Seemed to get worse after we used the shower. Quiet area, we got good sleep. I can see why it was rated only 2.6 out of 5...you usually get what you pay for, but in this case $78.00 for the smell of sewage is waaaay too much for my taste.

We only use a hotel to sleep, relax, and refresh - we don't need a newspaper, fitness room, or business center, so it's awesome when we get it all in a clean and mostly comfortable place.
When we stay here again, I'll be sure to bring my own pillow. Hubby loved the super-firm ones provided, but I'm a fluffy girl. And if you stay in a non-smoking room, remember that these are not on the central vent system (keeps the smoke out, very nicely), so turn off the heater before running your hair dryer.

The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable. They were both very hard, the bed was almost like sleeping on the floor and the pillows were flat and hard. There was a dirt ring around everything were the vacuum wouldn't quite reach all the way to the wall and it did not smell very good either.

Hotel was clean & quiet. Does not have AC control in room.

Their sign out front was almost covered up by tree limbs so drove past the place to begin with. Check in went quickly. The room was very small and very stuffy. The AC is controlled by the front office. Room smelled kind of damp. TV had very few channels to watch. Very little lighting in the room.

The staff was friendly enough, and the room itself was fairly clean. However, it is extremely basic, the building is definitely on the older end, and it smelled like someone had smoked in our nonsmoking room. No breakfast or other services, and the room didn't have a closet or hangers. The location is also pretty mediocre. But if you're looking for a cheap hotel near Des Moines, it works just fine.

I will never stay there again. The room was hot and no A/C in the room. All heat and A/C is controlled by office. Called office and the lady was rude about the whole thing.

No frills motel; clean; parking in front of the unit; no continental breakfast. Great for arriving, unpacking and a good night sleep. Relatively good price. Ok for a travel through one night stay. Easy to find with mapquest.
