Lovely small hotel. Smack dead in the city centre. Wonderfully styled with friendly staff. Rooms are a bit small

Excellent hotel! Very charming and situated in a very nice area. Room had fridge, espresso machine, water boiler, tea, ironing board and so on. Roof bar and reception bar are super nice. Love it!

One of our favorite hotels. It has the friendliness of a hostel, but was designed like a hotel. The decor alone is worth the visit.

A really nice place!

Great location and nice staff. Rooms are unique and clean.

It was in a great location. The staff was very friendly and the room was super clean.

A lovely city hotel in the centre of Groningen. Excellent staff that are very helpful, e.g. for complex dietary wishes and other support.

A wonderful place with amazing staff. I was already expecting a lot of noise in the inner yard and it was ok except that they started moving metal furniture and stuff outdoors etc. after 1am making extra noise which was completely unnecessary. I do not mind loud people outside but this was just not needed. Overall I enjoyed my stay a lot in this lovely hotel.

Had a great weekend at The Happy Traveler!
Cool and comfortable rooms. Very helpful and nice staf!

A interesting place. Funky.
But, our room had no wash basin. The hallway was also very noisy, the oitside was noisy too.
Our mattresses were also not good enough.
4.5
Silverware in the room (1 bedroom apartment) was not clean, with grease from previous meals visible on most of it. Otherwise very good, great location, and nice room.

Nice room, friendly staff, great breakfast.... and location location location

Great location in the center of the city. The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating.

A terrible noise from several hundred young people partying two meter from our window, music hammering until two in the night and noise from the clean up until four in the morning. Smoke from sigaretts and mariuana from people one meter from the window in the room. It is a scandal that we have to pay 130 Euro for this nightmare.

We really liked the location and the staff were friendly and helpful. But we had three issues. First, the room was prepaid via Hotels.com however this did not register on the Guest House check in system. After showing the receipt, I was told not to worry, but at check out the file was not updated. It was really uncomfortable having to defend this again since we need to rush to make our train!
But this was a minor nuisance in light of two other issues. First, our room faced a courtyard and drunken folks were still laughing it up loudly at 3am! We leaned out the window and asked the to quiet down in English and Dutch but they ignored us.
Second, the heating was not easily adjusted and the room was way too warm. Most rooms therefore had their windows open. Bad for noise and especially bad for the climate. These were disappointments which we hope the Guest House will work on in the future.

Very nice hotel located a couple of blocks from market area.

I spent two nights at this hotel and as others have warned, there was quite a bit of noise from the cafes and bars below which will not make sleeping easy unless you use earplugs or are a heavy sleeper. The rooms themselves are a bit strange in that the building looks like it may have once been a dormitory or prison of some kind but they were functional. I wouldnt stay here again simply given the noise level even though we were on a high floor.

Hotel clean beds very small complementary ear plugs due to room over looking student housing and court yard full of bars. Hotel corridors tired unkempt and stained carpets. Highlights central location

Hospitality was superb! The rooms were comfortable and clean. A bit noisy at night due to the proximity of restaurants and pubs. Nice the hotel offered a laundry service for a small fee, this was very helpful for anyone staying for a few weeks.

Friendly people, great breakfast, close to University

Hotel can be noisy due to surrounding bars in area. Very safe and very clean.
4.5
Pleasant large rooms. Helpful staff Unfortunately the write up of the hotel does not mention that it is wrapped around a courtyard in which there are two very popular pubs. Opening our room door was like walking into a party. It was a hot weekend with a Dutch celebration day so ultra packed and noisy. No air con so very noisy, hot nights.
Having said all of that we would go again but in winter months as the hotel is so central and reasonable. Better to eat breakfast at local cafe's.

I got no sleep thanks to the fact that the hotel shares a courtyard with a pub. The drunks congregate in the courtyard (on picnic tables) until at least 3 AM. If you plan to stay up past 3 AM, then it is a good hotel. Otherwise, go somewhere else. And I did not stay on a weekend. I stayed on Wednesday and Thursday nights. You would think it would be quiet during the week.
Also, when I checked in I had a question. I called the front desk from my room phone. The phone seemed to hang up. This happened repeatedly. To his credit, the employee came to see what I needed. He handled my situation. In addition, we had a lengthy discussion about the phone problems. I figured he had fixed my phone. This was around 3 PM. Later that night, around 1 AM, I tried to call the front desk to see if they were going to do anything about the very loud drunks below my window. You guessed it, the phone kept hanging up on me. I never got through to the front desk and no one ever came to check on me. I was too exhausted to go down to the front desk in person (It is a very long, winding hallway. Essentially, you walk all the way around the outside of the building, while remaining in the hallway.)
In the interest of fairness....the room was neat and tidy. It was stylish. It was a bit warm and the phone did not work, as mentioned.
If you don't care about sleeping before 3 AM, then it is a nice hotel.

Nice quiet hotel.

Room was a little cold, radiator not getting warm, but comfy bed, extra pillows when I asked, breakfast was good.
Would have liked a bar or dinner option on site if possible but staff were very helpful in providing information on good places to eat.

The hotel rooms were nice and comfortable. It was definitely worth the money. The location was also great as there were many bars n pubs below the hotel. This can sometimes be an inconvenience for people sleeping in the rooms because of the noise.

The personal service at the University Hotel were excellent and the personnel quite helpful. The room was sparse and the shower tiny, but was also quite acceptable (though there was no AC or any fans). But, the window faced a courtyard that included a restaurant/pub and was excessively noise (until 2:00 a.m. at least). We got very little sleep. The hotel even included ear plugs (unrequested) in the room so they realize just how noisy the courtyard can be.

The hotel is quite convenient. It was a bit spartan, but everything worked and was as advertised. Breakfast was good and people friendly. Parking is a very minor issue (one must get a chip from the front desk every time) but the lot was literally a 2 minute walk from the hotel. I would stay again, maybe in a bigger room.

This is a lovely little hotel. The rooms are affordable, clean, and are generally good quality. The hallways and passages to the rooms are little rough and could use some maintenance, but the rooms themselves are nice and comfortable. I found the hotel manager to be particularly friendly and hopeful, and the breakfast they offer (although a tad on the expensive side) is of good quality. If I visit Groningen again, I will stay at this hotel.

One night stay to visit university. Hotel simple but very close to all amenities. Only problem is access via car and car parking. Overnight car park some way away and 25 euros overnight charge
