We were provided a home like atmosphere. The staff were laser focus on providing guests the very best experience. We often heard, “we’re here for you”. They certainly live up to that statement, specifically, Claudia, Barbara, and Patricia. The breakfast ingredients were fresh every day. They went out of their way to accommodate my lactose free needs.

I loved the hotel. It was beautiful in a very romantic setting. The facilities were first class and the breakfast was gorgeous. The staff were the friendliest and most helpful staff I have ever encountered, going out of the way to help with my car hire. I will definitely use and recommend this hotel again

The best hotel I have ever stayed! Staff are extremely helpful, friendly, smiling! The property is very well located. There are very good pool and sunbathing facilities, feels like home :) Breakfast is very tasty and everything is fresh. Rooms is spacious and bright. It is like a home away from home and all staff members are like your family! Will definately stay here again!

We had a lovely stay in this historic home which the owners had remodeled to make it suitable for guests. While the rooms in the new wing were delightful,We liked the historic part of the house the best. The pool was lovely and the staff was most helpful, informative, kind and thoughtful. Breakfast was great, too!. We had a great meal at a tapas bar in the historic town center. We loved watching festival fireworks from our room windows.

My wife and me stayed at the hotel for 3 nights. The staff mostly young women that help alot with everything: From providing detailed explanations of attractions and tours till an assistance on tollroad. They create a very pleasant atmosphere. For example, on Saturday I asked where can I buy milk that we need for the early morning coffe, since than, every night they put a tray of coffee and warm milk in thermos next to our room. Everything is perfect clean and tasteful. A lovely breakfast with exotic fruit pouch and eggs that made according your request. The hotel is warmly recommended.

This is a gem B&B!! In the small suburb of Cete just outside of Porto, this place is fabulous! The inside is very modern and the rooms are quite spacious. Breakfast is a feast each morning. The train station in town afforded us free parking and an easy way into town each morning. We were spoiled at this location.

Staff were very helpful and welcoming. Room was well equipped with drinks and biscuits available in the corridor. Breakfast was excellent. We also had a dinner (needs prior arrangement) which was excellent but quite expensive. The swimming pool was quite small but good for children. The listed gateway to the property was very narrow. We took the train to central Porto - an easy 35 min journey. ATM and bakery 10mins walk away.

Our stay was fantastic. The staff warm and welcoming. The owners have done an excellent job maintaining the property. Their attention to detail is amazing. We have never seen anything like it. That is including 5 star hotels. They made our stay feel like home. Our children loved relaxing at the pool and interacting with the staff. This was our favorite place to stay in Portugal. Solar Egas Moniz is deserving of a 5 star rating. We shall return someday.

I traveled to Portugal in May, and I had a wonderful stay in Penafiel, at Solar Egas Moniz. The owner and staff were extraordinarily welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The hotel is a charming manor house with a beautiful stained glass window and offers a quiet and peaceful local experience. The hotel is located 1 km from the Cete train station, and approx. thirty minutes by car to Porto. I stayed in a bright and comfortable room in the main house. It contained a nice, firm bed, exposed brick wall, cable/satellite TV and free Wifi, and a beautiful view. There is a library, wine room with snacks, and a cute wood burning stove in the house. Breakfast and dinner were served in a delightful dining room; the food was really delicious and the service excellent. The surrounding property includes a garden, outdoor swimming pool, and a children's playground. It was quite lovely. The owner and her employees provided exceptional guest service, anticipating and full-filling all of my wishes and needs. They were so attentive and considerate. Everything possible was done to make my visit perfect. I can't recommend Solar Egas Moniz more highly! Thank you Iva and Joana for a delightful and memorable experience!
Tips: If you need to do laundry (and who doesn't when traveling with a suitcase full of dirty clothes), there is an extremely good laundress in Penafiel.
There is a really nice taxi driver that services the hotel (Fernando)
There is a new, good, casual restaurant in Penafiel.

We cannot say enough good things about the Solar and the staff. What a wonderful finding it was! Very romantic hotel situated in a very unique and beautiful town. You will feel like you are in a movie, when you are there. Their goal is to make you feel at home - but a beautiful home in a tucked in little town in Portugal - and they accomplished that goal with flying colors. Just 20 minutes away from Porto, in the town of Penafiel, a place truly full of charm and authenticity. We spent 2 nights there, but we wish we had 2 more, so we could explore the Romanico Route. You will love this place!

Wonderful stay at Solar Egas Moniz! Staff was incredibly helpful, DELICIOUS breakfast, and the entire premises are so lovely. Clean, comfortable room, and the decorating of the entire inn is delightful. We took day trips to Aveleda vineyards, Porto, and other small towns in the area.

We spent four very pleasant days at the Solar Egas Moniz, Paco de Sousa, in early May. This 19th century, small, quiet, family-owned hotel (10 rooms) features quality original (granite) and modern décor and renovations. The two styles are presented as choices for guests. The hotel is nicely placed outside Porto (30 minutes on the highway) and within Duorno Valley quintas wine estates. The town of Penafiel is a few minutes drive away. It has all the tranquil atmospheric village sounds of monastery bells, occasional barking dogs and virtually no traffic noise. The owner, Iva, teaches tourism at a college level and the charming staff we got to know, Patricia and Iliana were all fluent English speakers. The staff could not do enough to make our stay memorable with favours, advice and suggestions.

We wanted to spend a few days in Porto, Portugal and was looking for a hotel. Since we were driving and parking and traffic would be a hassle in the city, we choose Solar which is about 35 mins outside Porto in the countryside.
Wow, what a great experience we had and owners and staff (especially Daniel) were so helpful and friendly. Daniel welcomed us with a glass of port and a piece of cake while we waited for the room to get a rollaway sofabed. They really deserve 5 stars.
Solar is a little out of the way but we enjoyed taking the train in to Porto and returning to our little countryside hideaway.
There is a near by village with a wine bar and it is a must try. They had the best Vino Verde and wonderful cheese and cured meat plates. I think it is a place the locals visit more than tourists and had a good vibe on how life is lived in Portugal.
The dinner at Solar is special as well!

This family run hotel within easy reach of Porto is the most welcoming place we have e
Iver stayed. The setting is not so picturesque as nearer the Douro but compensated in every other way. Iva was so helpful.
