A very old historical building(Once a russian school on a fortress)You have to get ferry there but runs very regular.Great experience.Imaculately clean.Great staff. If I had to find a negative maybe some of it looks dated. But its a very old building.I would definatley return.

Clean, comfy, quiet, perfectly located to explore the little island. Friendly staff, easy (very late) check-in. Lovely little touches in shower and bathroom necessities as well as complimentary tea and coffee. Lots of information, games, a TV, internet. Comfy beds. Definitely recommend - waking up on the island is pretty special.

On an island in the harbour, so need to take a ferry to get there - but ferry is part of the City transport system, so very easy. Hostel is quiet, clean, friendly, and in a historic building in what used to be a fortress guarding Helsinki harbour. Lovely situation for walking around the site, where there are plenty of cafes, restaurants etc. Also a very reasonable price for Helsinki accommodation.

Nice location, just a 2 min walk from harbour. Clean and tiny hostel. Has guest lounge and a common kitchen upstairs. Reasonable price.

Pros:
It's very clean.
The staff is friendly and helpful.
The location is on an island, which is quiet and picturesque.
Free tea and coffee in the kitchen, which is available for use to all guests.
Cons:
It's very noisy: the walls are paper-thin and you'll hear the people in the other rooms and in the hall; the lockers are metal so it's impossible to open them quietly; the doors have no soft-stopper mechanism so they bang every time someone lets go of the door.
Basics aren't included: you must pay to rent a towel (2 euro), no free breakfast (7 euro), you can give a returnable deposit to get a padlock (4 euro).
Bathrooms: only 3 showers and 3 toilets in the entire place for everyone to share and they are tiny.
Location: it's on an island and you'll need to pay 5 euro one way for the ferry, so factor that into the price of the hostel when you consider staying here. Also, depending on the time of day and the time of year, you'll need to be aware of the ferry schedule, as the ferry may not depart often.
Overall, it's good for people who can sleep through cannonfire, otherwise, find a quieter and less overpriced hostel.

I enjoyed my stay at the Hostel Suomenlinna. I strongly suggest anyone who wants to have a more than cursory look at the Fortress to consider staying here. I is literally the only place to stay on Suomenlinna.
I found the Hostel to be both clean and comfortable. I shared my room with six strangers but that was not a problem. The Hostel allowed me to store my large suitcase in the office after I checked out in the morning so that I could tour the Fortress.
There are, however, two things that someone considering a stay should be aware of: First, the reception has extremely limited hours (8:00AM to 3:30AM); and, Second, if you want breakfast in the morning, they require 24 HOURS prior notification. As check in is not until 2:00PM, that was impossible for me. But, from what I saw of the buffet, the price of breakfast may not be worth it for many travelers. There are many restaurants and a market nearby.

I loved this place. Wonderful location. Great older building in great shape.

Wonderful location on the islands - a stones throw from the ferry dock and a supermarket. Would love longer hours at reception and also would love if they made/stripped the beds for you, but I recognise the extra staff would !mean extra costs, as well as perhaps removing some of the charm that there is. Everyone I met was helpful, whether guest or staff. It wasnt too loud (admittedly I was that midweek in late November), and despite a room off the kitchen area I barely heard a thing. Probably not where you want to stay for a week of exploring Helsinki, but for one or two nights of your four or so nights in Helsinki this is a great place to stay.

A cosy hostel on a beautiful, interesting island. It was quite peaceful und well equipped. We were staying in a 3-bed room. I appreciated the posibility to open the window and regulate the heating. Thanks!

The best part of my stay in Finland. Suomenlinna hostel is clean, inexpensive and in an excellent location: a quiet place just a stones throw away from central Helsinki. The ferry has frequent service and is a short ride. There is a supermarket 50mts away and Jaakellari Art Shop and Café a few blocks away offers a generous serving of the most delicious homemade soup, including bread and coffee for a reasonable 8euro. Fantastic place!

unique place to stay in the middle of the Helsinki. very clean hostel, not for the people who are used to staying in hotels, but great adventure for travelers. stayed there with my young daughter, it was wonderful experience and i wouldnt hesitate to go back. never saw anybody in reception or working there, since we arrived after 3.30pm and left before 8, but arrangements were done seamlessly and we had a very pleasent stay.
