Staying at the Ryokan is like stepping back in time. The building is beautiful, and the staff are fantastic. I’ve never experienced hospitality like it! Highly recommend the Japanese breakfast and trying out the baths.

The staff (especially Ando!) were EXCEPTIONAL!!!! They waited on us hand and foot, helped us with anything we asked for, and they even noticed my father wasn't getting around very well and so they brought in risers for his bed and put his bed up a couple of feet without us even asking or requesting or saying anything at all! They were beyond kind, thoughtful, and everything about the stay was truly enjoyable. The location was great, the Japanese Bath was amazing, they service was among the best service I've ever received at any hotel/accommodation ever, and it was just a wonderful Ryokan experience.
Nothing I can even think of.

One of the most beautiful traditional roykans we stayed in throughout our 3 week trip to Japan. Exceptional in all respects.
We loved everything.

Even in an old and beautiful city like Kyoto, the Toshiharu Ryokan is an absolute gem. Located in a quiet neighborhood in central Kyoto, it’s about a 20-minute walk from the Kamogawa. We only stayed in Kiku's room for a short night, but the kind greetings and words from the hostess made us just feel like home. Maybe the respectable lady use some magic or I can’t explain how could they preserve this one-hundred-and-sixty house so perfectly and intact. We went to bed very late, excitedly observing every ancient and elegant Japanese detail. Breakfast the next morning was also delicious. We highly recommend this ryokan to every tourist and definitely hope to visit again.
The soundproofing in kiku room is not particularly good, if someone goes to the bathroom late at night, you can hear the wooden floor crunching. But I think it’s inevitable in a house with such a long history and doesn’t really matter.

Amazing Japanese breakfast served in the room. This is a traditional Japanese style inn in a very old beautiful house. The owners were amazing and helpful and very kind. If you want to experience a taste of traditional Japanese culture this is a great place to stay. NB this is not a western style hotel.

Amazing old house turned into a really special hotel. Gracious, welcoming staff (with excellent English). Superb Japanese breakfast (the grilled salmon was truly special). We stayed in a double room with a small, elegant private garden. Sitting on the rocks, patting pillows of moss, listening to the quiet sounds of the city night and a close-by frog, was a magical way to end the day. Loved the onsen baths—soaking away the travel fatigue felt wonderful.
It was our favorite hotel in Japan. We loved everything.

This Inn, built in 1909, skilfully balances a beautiful, awe-inspiring stay in the past, with modern comforts such as stunning bathrooms & air conditioning. The staff are extraordinary and lovely, with plenty of English and patience for our limited Japanese. The futons were very comfortable (with an extra layer happily provided for one of us, as desired). The Japanese breakfast is exceptional and a great experience. The library room is a place of remarkable tranquility, with delicious & complimentary tea, coffee and treats. It took our family of 5 a moment, to transition from our usually hectic, ordered, modern life to the calm and very different nature of a Ryokarn but we are so glad we did. Spending two nights was ideal.
The online photos don’t do justice to this masterpiece. The rooms contain more texture and warmth than shown.

First time staying at Japanese ryokan. Both my wife and I loved the experience and wish we could have stayed a second night in Satsuke room. The inn was beautiful and very clean. The owner and her mom made us feel like honored guests and taught us the traditional ways and customs. The breakfast was delicious and a highlight of the visit. We will forever remember our experience and hope to stay at Toshiharu Ryokan again on a future vacation in Japan.
Everything was great, I can’t really think of anything requiring improvement.

Classic Japanese home. Only 5 rooms around a courtyard garden. Enjoyed the traditional breakfast and learning about the culture. A wonderful experience. Staff was very helpful with great recommendations.
Low ceilings for a tall American. Taxi had a little trouble finding but near shopping streets.

The ambience was incredible, the staff were so friendly and the rooms were very comfortable.
Having breakfast in the room was a real treat, and everything was absolutely delicious. They were very obliging with our dietary requirements, and took the time to explain everything in every dish.
Having a nice relaxing bath after a long day of sightseeing was perfect - the staff are very good at getting you to book a slot before you leave for the day so you already have it sorted for when you return.
Cannot rate this ryokan highly enough - I've been to Japan many times and this is easily the best place I have ever stayed. I will absolutely be back again.
Absolutely nothing to fault - everything was amazing.

Really enjoyed our stay here, the staff are so friendly and welcoming feels like a home away from home. The bath facility was huge, warm and very clean - the staff prepare this for you within a time slot. The room itself was very traditional and picturesque with a view onto the Japanese garden. Breakfast was great, around 10 small dishes prepared which were all lovely (Japanese food) and lots of tea. Tea and a small snack also provided on arrival, and there is a room for relaxing in which had great matcha and white chocolate biscuits.
There are different room options so this would change dependent on which you booked. We could of just not looked properly but we couldn't find a lock to the garden doors and the garden itself was just of the road, the toilet was also accessed via this garden which made me a bit nervous/ chilly at night. The bath was also in a separate location within the ryokan, but we did know this when booking and were happy with it. Should note, other toilets that were indoors were available elsewhere within the ryokan.

We loved everything about this ryokan. This was our first experience staying in one. If you love Japanese culture, this is definitely something you need to experience at least once. The staff was great! We loved taking baths every night. Very relaxing. I slept like a baby every night. Also, I would recommend getting the breakfast. It was delicious!

The view of the lovely garden from our room was beautiful. We loved the attention to detail in the decoration of the room. The scroll, fan and ikebana in the tokonoma were lovely. The breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented.
I did not find anything I did not like. Everything was thoughtfully done. The bathrooms were all spotless and the Japanese bath was a real treat.

I really enjoyed staying here. The rooms were nice and clean and I had a comfortable sleep, the breakfast was delicious, the amenities were plentiful and the staff were great!
Personally just didn't enjoy sharing the communal toilets but again that's just personal choice but you get over it.
