About this cottage rental
Black Dog
• Contemporary meets cabin rustic experience
• Nature is the key element in the cabin's design
• 13 acres, tons of windows & decked outdoor space
• Wood Fireplace, outdoor dining & gas grill
• WiFi, W/D, A/C & CABLE TV
• Dog friendly - see policy below
Black Dog shakes up the typical cabin image with modern styling. We like to call it “contemporary rustic.” Nature is a key element of this home's design, with its abundant use of wood, windows, and large, comfortable outdoor spaces.
Set on 13 private wooded acres on the northern side of Ashe County, this home is the epitome of peace and quiet. Perfect for bird watching, with luck you'll also spot deer, turkeys and raccoons. Hike in the woods, or bask in nature from a comfortable rocking chair or porch swing on the spacious decking. Take advantage of the outdoor gas grill, and dine al fresco.
Inside, the vaulted wood ceilings enhance the mountain feeling. In the sun-filled living room, a sense of nature continues, thanks to a bank of windows along one wall, and sliding glass doors along the other. Chill in the evening watching a movie on the comfy leather furniture, while soaking in the cabin atmosphere in front of a crackling fire. (Don't forget to bring firewood!)
The kitchen is well-equipped for home-cooked meals, with plenty of counter space. From the window at the kitchen sink, take in the view of the surrounding woods. The adjacent dining room overlooks the porch and woods through large sliding doors.
Black Dog offers one-floor living, so you don't have to worry about lugging suitcases upstairs! The master bedroom has a queen-sized bed, and the adjoining bath has double vanities and a tub/shower combination. The additional two bedrooms have comfy double beds and a shared bathroom. The cabin is also outfitted with a laundry room and utility sink, perfect for longer stays.
Come get away from it all at the Black Dog cabin!
Location, Location, Location
The Black Dog is located in the perfect spot for exploring the area's best fishing spots, close to the famous Helton Creek. From this location, it's only 30 minutes to Grayson Highlands State Park, where wild ponies will greet you up on the Massie Gap Trail. Come in the spring and you might see the foals. The park provides great hiking, a replica of a historic mountain settlement, an interesting exhibit of the history of the area, and more.
Not too far from Grayson Highlands is Damascus, Virginia, a quaint mountain town situated on the Virginia Creeper Trail, famed for bicycling. Rent bikes in town and the vendor will provide a shuttle ride to the start of the trail at White Top. You can also hike or ride horseback along the old railroad bed, crossing trestles over one of the region's most beautiful creeks.
From the cabin, downtown West Jefferson is less than 30 minutes away. There you'll enjoy the many quaint shops, galleries, farmer's market and restaurants, as well as the famous Ashe County Cheese. Less than 15 minutes from Black Dog you'll find Lansing, home of Molley Chomper Cidery, where you can sample a large variety of hard cider. When you get hungry, check out Pie On the Mountain, known for great pizza. Across the road is the Lansing Creeper Park, with a walking trail and monthly Music in the Barn concerts.
Ready for adventure? Spend time kayaking, canoeing or tubing on the New River. Local outfitters will hook you up with whatever you need. Other High Country recreation opportunities include fishing, hunting, zip-lining, cave exploration, mining for gems, and more. Mountain Aire Golf is a gorgeous public course in West Jefferson, offering 18 holes of beautifully-maintained fairways, with amazing scenery and reasonable prices. Don't forget to take a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, America's most beautiful road, with some of the country's most awe-inspiring views and photo opps.
Black Dog in NC's High Country offers a mountain vacation with something for everyone!
Dogs Welcome! Must be well behaved, leash/crate trained, 2 years or older and 45lbs or less. $50 / per pet. 2 dog limit.

Loved having coffee on the deck each morning in peace and quiet. The cabin was awesome and comfortable; loved all of the windows. The drive to Grayson Highlands, West Jefferson were a little long but very beautiful. Hopefully will be able to come back sometime soon.

We absolutely loved it. The hummingbirds at the Beebalm with the butterflies beautiful. It was tucked into the woods perfectly❤️❤️❤️❤️

We really enjoyed our time at the house. It was clean and comfortable and gave our group ample space. The large deck was great for relaxing, we enjoyed watching the hummingbirds on the beautiful Bee Balm flowers across the front porch. Hiking trail behind the house provided a nice, quick outing while we had iffy weather. My only complaints were that there was a faint smell of cigarette smoke that was really only noticable when entering, like someone who used to live there must have smoked, and you have to pack out your own trash. The dropoff for trash is a 20 minute drive away and requires that you take a badge from the house to drop it off...and then you have to return the badge to the house to avoid a $100 fee. So unless you want to drive home with bags of garbage in your car, plan on an extra 40+ minutes of travel included in your departure. I feel like taking care of this should be included in the cleaning fee. It was definitely an annoying inconvenience that I think should be disclosed before booking, but ultimately would not prevent me from booking again.

Nice wraparound porch. Didn't mind that it was a rainy weekend since we had a nice place to stay.

We enjoyed our stay at Black Dog! This was our 2nd trip . We enjoyed the beautiful views, our ride into Lansing to Pie On The Mountain... fabulous pizza, our hike on the trail at the cabin and our trio to the New River State Park. We look forward to our next visit!

It was very nice , clean close to lots of things to do, fly-fishing, breweries and winery within 25 min.

A perfect getaway for a week in an amazing location centrally located in the middle of the cutest towns to visit , North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee! Will definitely come back with hopes to stay longer! Thank you!

We loved the area, and the cabin was comfortable and practical. Loved the large porch. It was also quite secluded but easy to navigate in and out.

Total seclusion and perfect to get away. Our pups loved the freedom to roam around the property.

My family and I really enjoyed staying at the Black Dog cabin in Grassy Creek. It was very comfortable and nicely appointed with quick access to Grayson Highlands and the Mt. Rogers area. The cabin location was very peaceful and remote, which is exactly what we were looking for to take a break from hectic everyday life. We would definitely stay here again. Great check-in/out process and Stay Blue Ridge was helpful in accommodating a last minute change. Great experience, highly recommend!

Fantastic cabin in the woods! Quiet, peaceful, clean, and comfortable. We’ll definitely return.

A better understanding of the land may be nice for kids to run around. Other than that it was perfect!

This is a perfectly, lovely cabin in a beautiful setting. Property manager is communicative and pleasant. Thanks for a lovely weekend.

This cute cabin is perfect for a getaway to the mountains. It sits on the side of a mountain with plenty of land so you have privacy. The only visitors we had were deer. The large windows in the house provided a wonderful view. The deck is massive - there is plenty of room for outdoor entertainment. We loved having the large fireplace for cozy evenings. The house is well equipped, clean, and modern. I would love to visit again sometime soon! We're thinking of going in the middle of winter just to sit by the fire and watch for deer!

Over the years we have stayed at many, many vacation rentals. But never before have we walked out of a property and said… No!... we would not change a THING – except to stay LONGER!!!!
This was a last-minute trip for us, at the peak of the busy fall travel time. Therefore, we greatly appreciated Miranda’s help – quickly answering our questions and accommodating a special request. The pictures of this “cabin” do not capture the beauty of its magnificent, wonderfully-wooded, secluded setting; nor its interior design with its breathtaking views, perfect 1-story layout and tasteful, but oh-so-comfortable décor. And, everything was spotless! – never before have we stayed in a wood-beamed, high-ceilinged/windowed property that had NO cobwebs! The kitchen was well-stocked and neatly organized; and the perfectly clean propane grill on the deck was a joy to cook on!
Although our stay was short, we enjoyed our trip to Grayson Highlands State Park and hike to see the wild ponies; exploring the beautiful backroads; a delicious lunch at the Havana Café’; and picking-out cheese and other goodies at the Ashe County Cheese Co. store. But most of all, we loved our time at the cabin!... watching both the sun and moon rise over, and light-up the treetops; relaxing on the amazing decks, listening to the birds and seeing deer chase each other along the ridge-top; walking our dog (who clearly loved his stay!); and especially - being lazy next to the cozy fireplace!
Thanks for giving us the privilege of enjoying the wonderful Black Dog! We hated having to leave; but can’t wait until we are able to return.

I loved the location, and the house was cozy, but unfortunately the two guest bedrooms smelled like death. Something had died in the attic and was rotting. Three out of four of us got sick. There were mouse traps set up, but apparently no one had come to check them. So, besides the death smell, rotten, aweful, smell, everything was great!

Such a beautiful property!!!! It is out in the middle of nowhere but, the drive into West Jefferson is easy. Great in between location of West Jefferson and Grayson Highlands State Park. The only negative, which is nothing really, just a suggestion, is to have a larger trash can since we have to take our trash out. We checked out on a Sunday so this was not necessary but we filled are can up pretty quick. Overall, great trip and highly recommend!!!

Great cottage nestled in nature...not too much(!!) And close to the local establishment....definite do-againer!

Quiet, well-kept modern style home nestled in the woods.

Great home for getting away from it all!! Home was nicely furnished, plenty of linens, kitchen was nicely set up with enough cookware and dishes that meal preps were easy. The WiFi password was incorrect but that was actually ok, no one could sit on their phones. I would definitely stay here again.

Very private, secluded location. Our children 5,11,&13 loved exploring the surrounding woods.
House was immaculate. Everything we needed was there.
Booking was easy, as was check-in/out. We’ll definitely return.

This property is so relaxing! It is located far away from everything- 25 minute drive to grocery store! The area is so quiet- a great place to get away from it all! There is a hiking trail behind the house which goes to the top of a nearby hill. We spent a lot of time on the spacious decks enjoying the forest views!

The location is very secluded and there is no view. However, it was absolutely beautiful. The large decks and porch swing were a great place for morning coffee and evening dinner. Wonderful restaurants in Lansing and West Jefferson are not too far. A little gem with a grill we found was Miller's Country Store/Helton Country Store. They have pizza, wings, and burgers. The house itself has some great but narrow hiking. The house has tons of windows great for taking in the beauty of the woods. Everything was super clean. The only issue we had was ants.

Great place to spend time with kids and go hiking and exploring. Far from people contact, but near to stores and markets su supply your needs. Great picnic and hiking areas around.

We really enjoyed our weekend and appreciate your wonderful cabin!
I want to note that we stayed in the Master bedroom and used that bathroom. When I was preparing to shower, I reached up and lifted the towel off the hook. (sink-side) The slide-in portion of the fixture came down with the towel, breaking off the hooked portion. I suspect that the center portion wasn’t pushed all the way down and made it too easy to slide up and come down with the towel.I reinserted the slide in portion of the fixture and was sorry that the hook portion was broken. I would suggest considering a towel rack that would provide not only more room for guest towels, but would possibly be a stronger option for towels.
Thank you,
Rachel Jensen

We loved staying in the private location of Black Dog. We were close enough to groceries and restaurants, but far enough away to enjoy being surrounded by nature. We traveled about 20 minutes north into Virginia to Grayson Highlands State Park where we hiked to see the wild ponies that live there. We explored and went to dinner in West Jefferson, a very cute town. I enjoyed cooking and sitting by the fire in the evening. This was a great rental and I could see us visiting it again in the future!😊

The pictures do not do it justice. It was just big enough for us and our pups but small enough for it to be cozy and romantic. We wish we had another day to just stay in and enjoy the cabin. We enjoyed our morning coffee on the deck as the dogs explored near by. The house had everything you would think you might need should you want to cook, start a fire, or blow dry your hair. The property seemed to be new or just very well kept. Loved the layout and the decor, I could definitely live here. I loved the large window at the front of the property, we watched deer coming through in the mornings and go over the ridge. They are so much bigger than I imagined. We went into West Jefferson for groceries and breakfast. Cute little town, make sure to check out The Vintage Farmhouse which is across the street from a great local breakfast spot, Sweet Louise's Cafe. If you're up for some good food and fun convo head over to Piney Creek and check out Red Dog Bistro(about 25) min away. The road up to the property can be slippery so make sure you have 4WD. Other than that get ready to enjoy your stay!

The cabin is definitely on the road less traveled but such a serene and lovely place. Don’t be nervous about the off the path road it’s easy to navigate even in the snow. We enjoyed all the comforts of modern day life and the gorgeous quiet of this little retreat! Would highly recommend. Our kiddos enjoyed the snow fall and built some fun sled runs amongst the gorgeous trees. The small town of West Jefferson is close by and worth the trip. Overall we would highly recommend this property.

We stayed at the Black Dog the weekend before Thanksgiving in order to go a Choose & Cut to pick out our tree. We loved the peaceful, solitude of the Black Dog Cabin. Our other favorite perks were the wood-burning fireplace, the remodeled bathrooms and kitchen and the privateness of the place. This was a perfect to stay if you have any anglers interested in fishing. Helton Creek was popping with fly fishermen and a great place to explore. Would stay here again!
