Beds are UNCOMFORTABLE (can feel springs and wood). Communications are all automated (you’re not speaking to a real person). Can hear noise on streets. No personal touches— doesn’t feel cozy. I mean, this place is right off of the royal mile, but I wouldn’t stay here again. I’d rather be farther away and have a cozier place to stay.
3.0 / 5.0
The positive - Fabulous location. Only half a block from the Royal Mile.
The negative - Should have looked at prior reviews in greater detail. Beds were absolutely horrible. Old mattresses with springs poking out. Had to sleep with windows open and outside noise made it difficult. One of the showers kept on going cold. Photographs online made the place look more modern and nice than it actually was.

Inside is plenty clean. Beds were comfortable. I was a bit taken aback by the only entrance being full of graffiti and next to a tattoo shop. The back side of the property is featured in the pictures and very charming. The street entry is on a street with several hostels. Parking is directly across the street in the Radisson parking deck. It will cost 30 pounds for 24 hours. Cannot say enough about how perfect the location is. It is really JUST off of the Royal Mile . Happy….enough with our choice

The flat is great, and had everything we needed. 2 of the bedroom views are a parking garage, but that is just an unfortunate piece of luck for the owner. We enjoyed our short stay, and wish it could have been longer. One piece of advice: Book tickets to Edinburgh Castle days ahead!!

All beds were so uncomfortable. You could feel the springs. The pillows were so thin.

Location was clutch. Just off the royal mile. The beds were a little funky, and the bathroom inside one of the bedrooms had the most awful smell coming from it as soon as we arrived. We just kept the door shut and it was ok. Would stay here again

Our stay at Pass the Keys was very enjoyable, just off the Royal mile. The flat was very clean and quiet. I would highly recommend this place. The beds were comfortable with the exception of the double bed in the two bed room. Hopefully, they will replace that mattress.

There is likely no better location than this flat! We visited for a few days and being so centrally located at the Royal Mile made it easy to walk everywhere. We didn’t experience the high level of noise noted in other reviews and we were there over the weekend.
The flat itself is quaint, it was nice having two full bathrooms. The only constructive note I have is the beds. They are bare boned and incredibly uncomfortable. The pillows were also incredibly thin; I wish there had been more of them so we could have doubled up.

The interior and location were fine for our family group, we had plenty of space and the location (although down a steep hill) was right off the Royal mile) centrally located to Waverley Train Station and in between the Castle & Holyrood Palace. The mattress in all cases were terrible, squeak, groan and flatten, flat pillows too. Lots of tossing and turning. The main bath toilet makes incredible noise when flushing, several loud groans. Washing Machine had no power to it, I called the emergency line- they did respond that had inquired, friendly & apologetic , but never helped- no laundry was completed. I had read a previous review about the beds- called from America to discuss my concerns about the beds- 4 months before our arrival- my guess is they don’t care. The outside of the building is covered with graffiti and the interior hallway, stairs are filthy. Inside was very clean, towels and sheets were soft & nice.

Flat was in a great location. Everything we needed for our stay.

Great location for shopping and taking in the sites on the Royal Mile. City life can make it hard to sleep (when you are form the more rural parts of New Jersey) so a portable sound machine can really help. Apartment was clean and two bathrooms were convenient.
2.0 / 5.0
Location great- walking distance of everything. One drawback on a Friday/Saturday night loud as next to a Pub, as late loud drunks. Cars driving over cobblestones right outside window. Sunday on is ok.
Loved the Pub BTW - Salt Horse
This place needs some love - others commented on the entrance once in door (with Graffiti) IT IS filthy!!! Sharp staircase to other flats.
Carpet inside gross -
Furniture needs updating. Couch is hard- when sitting on one part you are literally sitting on a board. Someone sitting on it quickly could get hurt.
Beds are similar - pillows flat. Toilet in Master bedroom sounds like a Fog Horn when flushing - could not flush at night at all - too loud. Several used half rolls of TP. Half a roll of paper towels in kitchen. That was ALL for 4 days.
Master bedroom had one of three light bulbs working in chandelier. We tried screwing the other two in and it was like the Bates Motel with both bulbs flashing off and on. We had to unscrew again as I’m sure the guests before us did.
I have pictures if need be.
Kitchen is nice, large fridge/dishwasher,washing machine included. Did feel safe even with the entrance,.

The street noise was a bit loud at night in the front bedrooms but that’s the only issue. Put the light sleeper in the back bedroom or take earplugs. Great location, and we loved the graffiti out front.

The location was convenient, but the furniture was falling apart and the beds very uncomfortable. Overall, a bit shabby. Just a little upgrade would make a big difference.

My husband, daughter and I were very pleased with our stay. Very clean, charming, and roomy. This location is close to many shops, pubs, restaurants, and busy areas to explore. The coffee shop next door is a fabulous “go to” in the morning. We all felt comfy and at home when we were done with our day. I recommend!

Excellent location. Very clean. Beds rather uncomfortable and sofa needs attention. Would definitely go back!!

We had a wonderful four nights in Edinburgh in August 2023.
The apartment has an awesome location, just one block from High Street, and easy walks to numerous attractions and services in town. The apartment was big enough for the four of us to share the space easily. Appliances, electrical and plumbing worked fine. Street noise was not a problem, even during festival season.
Unfortunately, we had two significant disappointments: First, the bed in the main bedroom was in pretty bad shape. It had a broken frame and a bad mattress. We made-do with some strategically placed pillows, but we would expect a decent bed. (The second bed was acceptable, and we never tried the third.) Second, the provided wifi had a very poor bandwidth - just 2.5 Mbps. I now see the listing doesn't promise "high-speed internet," but the wifi was pretty useless at such low speed.
Lesser disappointments: Numerous scuffs and dings on surfaces and furniture throughout the apartment. Barely-enough plates and glasses in the kitchen. And, despite the property being generally clean, there were dingy corners throughout - it could benefit from a "deep clean."
Like other reviewers, we wished the building's shared hallways could be spiffed up. But ultimately this wasn't much of a bother.
Would we go again? We would definitely go back for the location and general apartment size and amenities. But we would want good beds and faster internet.
5.0 / 5.0
First impression from the outside is not good, with the tattoo shop signs and graffiti, but in fairness this is clear from the images in the listing. The entry hall and stairwell are equally basic but this is a traditional Edinburgh tenement so really all part of the experience. Once inside the apartment it is exactly as described, spacious, light, comfortable and well equipped (though, for potentially 7 people, a few more items of crockery and glassware and a lock for the shared bathroom door would have been appreciated).
Most important, though, it proved to be a fantastic base for my wife and me, our daughter, son in law and two teenage grandchildren.
The location could not be bettered, just off the Royal Mile equidistant from the Castle and Holyrood halfway down the short hill between the Mile and Cowgate so providing easy access to all the main Edinburgh attractions and restaurants.
We had a super few days and would strongly recommend the apartment to any family group.

This was a great property. Host was amazingly communicative. Unbelievable location. Would definitely stay here again.

Located walking distance to old town attractions and Calton Hill.

We could not be happier with the flat layout and the location. There is graffiti on the door and it feels a bit rough in the street, but don’t let that stop you from booking.

Condo was a great location to start our Scotland Adventure. Just off of the Royal Mile, with plenty of shopping and food for everyone. Did not cook, but kitchen nicely equipped. It was everything we anticipated it would be, with no disappointments!

This is the very first time I am going to let this kind of comment.
We paid 1200£ for three nights which is a big amount of money I guess. We thought the apartment was worth it. But definitely not.
So the story begins with the building itself. Looks normal from the outside but as fast as you enter inside, it’s looks like a squat : walls are so dirty and the ground floor looks like a shelter dating from the Second World War. No joke.
Inside the flat : two words are necessary to talk about it : old and dirty.
Old : given the state of the beds, I think that Mary Queen of Scots must have slept in it 470 years ago. No other possibilities. Also, walls are like paper sheets : you’ll probably hear some neighbours walking and screaming. Including some drunk people knocking at your door. Why ? Still asking.. But wait the best is coming.
Dirty : how lovely to discover moths on the headboard of the bed. It’s always nice to discover insects who’s sleeping inside your own bed. Traces of dirt in the bathroom, mold on the window, stains on cushions, carpet and walls…
Such a pleasure isn’t it ?
However the flat is well located. This is the only advantage to rent this flat.

Clean, well equipped. Fantastic location
A little paint on the exterior and a broom and mop in the shared hallway would do wonders!!
5.0 / 5.0
The entryway and shared hallway are a bit rough, but the flat itself is nice and well-kept. It's an older building, so that comes with a certain look and feel, but it's a nice flat with plenty of space and good amenities.
