About this house rental
Aloha, we invite you to stay at our “house of new dawns.”
Halehikiola was named for the refreshing way it evokes the Hawaiian value of Ka la hiki ola each morning as the house fills with light. As “the dawning of a new day,” Ka la hiki ola is the value of promise, optimism, and new beginnings—it invokes our sense of hope. The quiet street we are on, Alaula, is named for another way the Hawaiian language refers to both the light of early dawn, and to the day-glow of sunset before twilight sets in, creating the perfect setting for Halehikiola.
Thus, Halehikiola is a house with a mission: Our goal is to enliven your spirit with hospitality, comfort and invigoration each time you visit the Big Island of Hawai‘i environs of our neighbor, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, and spend time on the East side of the island. Bring a journal to capture your thoughts and transcribe your memories—what we call Sense of Place is exceptionally strong and compelling here.
In respect for the land it dwells on, the house is elevated; it was designed and built to sit atop gentle outcroppings of an ancient lava flow (do take note of the stairways in our photos). Vaulted ceilings reach up through the forest canopy and feature 2 large skylights; Halehikiola feels open yet intimate, comfortably surrounded by the natural wild beauty and cool green foliage of the rainforest. If you’d like to bring the outside in, do feel free to clip the orchids, anthurium, bromeliad torches, forest lilies, gardenia and ginger which may be in bloom; we’ll have a pruner and selection of vases ready for you!
Location: Halehikiola is in Royal Hawaiian Estates, the neighborhood bordered by the ‘Ola‘a Forest Reserve on the slopes of Kilauea. Drive a short 7 minutes to reach the entrance to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, 39 minutes to swim and snorkel Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach, and 39 minutes to Hilo and from the Hilo International Airport. On Sunday mornings, be sure to visit the Cooper Center Farmers Market, just 5 minutes away; Volcano Village is known to locals as “where the artists live,” and small galleries outnumber stores and eating places. During longer stays, take day-trip adventures to the west side of the island: Drive 65 miles to the Maunakea Observatories Visitors Center, 85 miles to the Waikoloa Resort and Mauna Lani Resort coastline, or 99 miles to historic Kailua-Kona. Make your visit here a true get-away and island-wide adventure.
What to pack: Halehikiola is at the 3,700 foot elevation mark, so the nights and early morning hours may rain and can be cold; pack a jacket and clothing you can layer—you will get warm on your adventure hikes—and for the possibility of winter nights that can dip to the 40s. Pack your t-shirts and shorts for everyday wear, hiking shoes for adventures, easy slip-on footwear for the yard and rainforest, and flip-flops (we call ‘em slippas) Grocery and dining in the nearby Volcano Village is limited, so we do recommend you fill your gas tank, and make a stop enroute for the nourishment you might need for your first meal after arrival beyond the water, coffee and tea we provide at the house.
Accommodations:
Bedroom on the main floor - King bed
Loft bedroom on the 2nd floor - King bed, 2 Twin beds, smart TV, ensuite bath
Additional bedroom available on the lower level - 2 Queen beds
All bedrooms are equipped with extra pillows, comforters and heaters for cold nights,
humidifiers, and either ceiling or standing fans for warmer days.

We loved staying here! It had everything we needed and was convenient to all the places we wanted to visit on the Big Island but also very private and out of the mainstream. Would love to stay again!

This place was awesome! Very well put together and with everything you need. The location is quiet and private and only 5mn from the Volcano National Park. It made it so much easier to be able to come home for lunch and then head out again. I would stay there anytime while visiting the park!
The house is clean, comfortable and easy to get to. The huge living room was great for hanging out with everyone, and we enjoyed the serene deck, and the extra sitting nook inside. Definitely rent it!

Hands down, the best equipped kitchen of all the VRBOs I’ve stayed at. My family is big on cooking and this was huge for us. It was very comfortable for the big group and close to everything we wanted to see.

Our group used this property for a strategic planning retreat. The house was clean, comfortable, and welcoming. The home is thoughtfully kept, well stocked, and an overall beautiful space. I would highly recommend Halehikiola.
Mahalo for a great stay.

We had a wonderful time staying at Halehikiola. We had plenty of room for everyone to have space to relax after long days exploring. The house was well stocked and in a perfect location for easy access to the park.

Lovely property and great house. Well stocked kitchen. Hot tub needed more water and directions on use. But it was nice to have one there!

One of the favorite places we have stayed at for the family, the home is absolutely beautiful. We would be happy to stay here anytime.

This home was in a great location for visiting Volcano's National Park (Literally 12 min away) The house was extremely comfortable, with a huge tv and many special touches.

The house was beautiful, clean and had everything you could need. Communication was easy and Jolanta was quick to respond to any questions we had. We live on island and look forward to coming back soon. Perfect getaway

Here is a little quiz to see if this house is right for you:
1) Do you want to enjoy Hawaii like a local?
2) Are you ok with being far from town?
3) Do you want to wake up every morning to a gorgeous ocean view?
If you answered yes to these questions then this is the house for you.
The house is located about an hour from downtown Kona. One you turn to get into the neighborhood you will go down a 3 mile very windy road, not horrible in the day time but quite scary in the dark (SUV recommended).
The property is absolutely gorgeous once you get to it!! Beautiful layout, the downstairs courtyard was our favorite place to hang out. If you don’t mind driving everywhere then this is the place for you! There isn’t a washer and dryer so we had to hand wash our clothes, and this the first VRBO I have stayed at that didn’t have beach chairs.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay but next time we stay a littler closer to town with a house on a less scary road.

This is a lovely 2 bedroom with nice privacy away from the street and gorgeous plants all around. The back deck and hot tub were much appreciated and my kids absolutely loved the tv room with a ginormous tv and wrap around couch. We only stayed here for one night, would have loved to stay more. It’s very close to volcano nat’l park, allowing us to go into the park at night to see the lava. The only issue was that Volcano is chilly (hard to believe in Hawaii, but it’s true) and when we came home after our long day in the park hoping for a nice warm shower, we found that there was no hot water! Freezing cold shower. Bummer. These things happen, and the property manager was responsive and tried to make it right. I think it’s a lovely place but I can’t give it 5 stars bc of that issue and bc I found it pricey for what is actually only 2 bedrooms (lots of extra twins/couches if you have kids though).

Our family of 4 stayed for a week to explore Volcanoes National Park. This house was a true gem! The art and furnishings were luxe. Lots of little touches throughout to make us comfortable and entertained. Comfortable beds, a huge entertainment room, really cool art throughout, and even a fun fish hook game in our favorite spot - the covered porch. It was fun to have the chickens and rooster greet us at the end of the day when we returned from our hikes. There was a nice, big dining table to lay out our plans for the week, a washer & dryer including soap and dryer sheets also stocked with drawers of awesome dvds though we were admittedly too exhausted to actually pop any in at the end of the day, a stash of books too which is always appreciated! Great location for getting to the park as well!

This is a very cool house tucked into a neighborhood in Volcano, HI. I was not prepared for how chilly it was there in summer but it was a welcome change! The decor in the house is funky and the landscaping around the home is incredible. It was a great place to relax when we weren't exploring trails in the nearby Volcanoes National Park (which we also highly recommend). The living area is spacious and the hot tub is very nice.
I will state a couple of caveats - there are little frogs in the rainforest that come out and "sing" at night. I thought they were delightful and they didn't interrupt anyone's sleep. However our sleep was disturbed by some nearby roosters early in the morning. Next time, I'll bring some ear plugs but I'd definitely stay here again!

We loved the house but it was a bit too far away from Center of Captain Cook,. Check the map thoroughly and match it with the plan for your vacation. The house is a gem! Very calm area. Silent!

The pictures do not do this place justice. Inside was very well maintained and had tons of decor which add to its uniqueness. The area is very quite and private. We loved sleeping with the widows open and have the cool breeze blow in, hear the rain and the coquis at night. The huge couch was so comfy while we watched movies at night on the massive tv. We were able to cook every morning and had a BBQ one night on the deck. Sitting on the back porch while being surrounded with beautiful trees and flowers was amazing. This is a definite must book!

What can I say, stop reading this review and book this place now, seriously.
We have stayed in Hilo town proper twice and decided to stay a bit closer to the park this trip, and also needed a place for 4 instead of 2. The photos and location looked interesting to us so we booked it. Little did we know just how amazing of a property we had rented.
First, location, a bit out of town so get your supplies before leaving Hilo, but once you get there, wow. You feel like you are all alone on your own island. Hottub, amazing covered lanai, grill on the outside. The wonderful music of the coqui Frogs at night are great to sleep to.
Then you have the interior, we have never stayed in such a well appointed and stocked home. It's like you walked into your own home. The owners had provided everything we would need from storage containers, spices, coffee, tea, sugar etc. You name it, it was there. Even flashlights we used to take a hike to the volcano eruption.
I don't know why you are still here reading this review, you should have already booked this property before someone else did.
We would pay what they are asking for 2 next time we visit the island.

The place was beautifully set up and so cozy. Tons of space for us all to find our own nooks and still be together. Loved all the cool decorations we enjoyed discovering all the unique and well appointed decorations, it was so clean and organized! Everything was easy. Our only regret was staying just one night... wish we had more time to unwind and enjoy sleeping in the jungle oasis. We went back and forth to Volcano Natl Park a few times with it only 8 minutes away. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Just a little far from everywhere you need to go. Drive in and out road is tough but after few times, you will enjoy it.

Such a cool unique property! We absolutely loved staying here. Well equipped, clean and fun! This house is so close to the Volcanos National park too. The owners were friendly and responsive. We would definitely stay again.

We enjoyed all the amenities, especially the lanai, screened in porch and the decor. Everything we needed for meals and markets had excellent freshly caught fish. Beds were very comfortable and ventilation kept us comfortable at night.
4.0 / 10.0
The exterior of this rental was NOT maintained. The glass roof over the hot tub is covered in dirt and leaves. The yard was not tended to. Hoses, ladders, wheel barrel all left out. The stairs to the front entrance are moss covered and dangerous. I have pictures. Lanai area railings dirty and rotted. Deck area the same. Not conducive of a five star rental as they clam to be.

Just spent 10 very relaxing days celibrating our 45 th anniversary. House was everything that was advertised & more. It's a short drive & a 30 minute hike to Honomalino Beach for those who really want see a black sand & be as secluded as possible anywhere in Hawaii. Took a little over an hour to drive from the house to volcano national park & a little farther to see Hilo. Overall just a great vacation with no worries.

If you are looking for a spot close to the Volcano and National Park, it doesn't get any better than this. This is the perfect location to easily get to and from the park for multiple trips to check on the volcano/lava activity. It was a great space for our family of 4 to unwind. The rain forest lived up to it's name but we loved all of the wildlife and plants surrounding the property as well as it's proximity to the town of Volcano and some great local spots for lunch/dinner.

First of all, read the reviews as these are very helpful as this is not just another rental. It is NOT the busy, Waikiki Beach type experience where you’re close to everything and have commercially developed beaches. Anything you do on this island requires work and hiking, often across rough terrain (such as lava rock). But this is what we wanted to experience - more native Hawaiian. We loved the National Park. But honestly, the house was so beautifully appointed with great ocean views and outside areas with ocean breezes that we were hard pressed to leave even for day trips! The kitchen is well equipped with lots of extras such as seasonings and even coffee and filters. Beautifully decorated. Roku TV with most common offerings and reliable internet. Host was super responsive and helpful with answering questions. Loved watching and listening to the birds. Excellent landscaping around the house greatly added to enjoyment and increased feel of privacy in what is otherwise an open lava field. Costco is minutes from the airport and best place to shop to stock up on your way through! We love, love, loved it and plan to stay again!

The rental house was unusually well equipped for cooking. Given how distant the house is from places to eat, this was just great. Bed was very nice, layout of the home is good and ocean view is nice. Best feature is the nearby location of Honomalino beach which is just a five minute drive and 20 minute walk to a beautiful black (salt and pepper) beach with coconut palms:)

We had a wonderful experience and loved the house! Had everything we needed for our 10 day honeymoon stay! The hot tub was great, comfortable beds, great shower with body wash, shampoo and conditioner available, kitchen was fully stocked, all appliances were clean and worked great. We grilled out almost every night and spent some time relaxing in the living room with the most amazingly huge TV! Very close to Volcano National Park and not far from Hilo. The owners were very responsive to messages and very easy to work with. We would absolutely stay here again!

Wonderful home-away-from-home! We stayed at Poi-13 for 3 weeks and it is a terrific home! Love the location....great to walk on the lava fields by ocean and watch magnificent wave action, explore tide pools, night sky star-gazing is unbelievable!! Great location to explore SW Hawaii too. Tim is very quick to respond to communications and super easy to work with. Poi-13 has all the necessities of homelife and more to make your stay here a time to remember! We are repeat guests of Poi-13 and look forward to returning again soon! Mahalo Tim and Jenn! Poi-13 no ka oi!!

Had a wonderful stay. Easy to find the property, great space to hang out in the huge living room, hot tub was fantastic, kitchen had everything you could possibly need, and nice toiletries in the bathrooms. Short drive to Volcano Village and the Nat’l park. Hosts were easy to communicate with.

We so enjoyed this house. The house had such great character and attention to detail. Very comfortable for our family of six. Our only complaint was we didn’t stay longer!

This was a great house. Its close to the National Park and we were able to go out one evening to the volcano and walk to the lookout to see the lava. Amazing! During the day we drove the entire Chain of Craters Road (highly recommend) and walked through the Lava Tube. The house itself feels very private (which we loved) and the hot tub is such a nice feature. Ive found that hot tubs are pretty fussy at many rentals.... we likely did not have the top on secure and it did not warm up after the first use. The owner however provided some quick instructions for getting it warm again! The house comfortably fits two couples and maybe a child or two -- we were five adults and made it work! We don't watch a lot of television, but the living room was great. HUGE television with HUGE sofa was a really nice comfy spot to hang out and watch a movie/relax. A helpful tip: this part of Hawaii is pretty remote and access to food and supplies is limited. We were only there for two nights so did not cook, but stopped in Kona after our flight landed to pick up some snacks. Waiting times for the few restaurants is very long, but everyone is very kind and working so hard. Pick up some laundry detergent if you want to wash clothes. Everything else you need is there including flashlights to walk to the Volcano!! We would stay here again!!

We loved this house it was very comfortable and the hosts have done a tremendous job thinking of everything! Great ocean views and easy 5 minute walk to the oceanfront lava fields to see and hear the waves crashing in - nature at it’s finest! Do know what the plans are for your trip - as the house is a decent driving distance to most destinations - we drove anywhere from 45 minutes to 2+ hours to reach areas of interest such as the town of Kona, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Mauna Kea, and the waterfalls around Hilo. The house is about a 1 hour 15 minute drive to/from Kona Airport. The owner did recommend a black sand beach near the house too and that was one of the highlights of our trip!

This house and location were just perfect. We listened to the sound of the ocean at night. We walked the neighborhood and went to the sub waterfront park. Just stunning. I'll come back again!

Well appointed and lovingly designed home at great location. Enjoyed listening to the jungle on the covered lanai. Fantastic upstairs shower that feels like your in the trees. We used as our base to spend nights and sunrise in volcano national park to see the lava as well as sights on East and south side of the island.

This place is amazing. If you want to be near town, this is not for you. If you want to see the real Hawaii, definitely stay here. The drive is so cool. The house and the neighborhood are even better! Everything you need is right at the house. No need to bring snorkel gear. It's all there. The house is so well decorated. Like a boho hippie vibe. We loved it! Definitely a plus to to feel the sea breeze, the coqui frogs and hear the sound of the waves crashing. The nearest grocery store is in ocean view which is about 10-15 miles away. Definitely eat at coffee grinds and the coffee shack. Shaka tacos has the best tacos around. Back to the house. The neighborhood is so quiet and the people were very nice. Tim and Jen are the best hosts. We are even looking at a lot, we loved it so much. Mahalo for fabulous time and the opportunity to stay at Pele's perch. You guys are the best!

The pictures do not do this place justice. Comfy cabin feel with a total modern twist. Everything you need they have thought of. From the vitamix and small kitchen appliances to the shampoo and soaps in the bathroom you won't need a thing. The 85 inch TV in the roomy theater family room was great for watching a game to reading, napping and visiting. The hosts were quick to answer any questions we had. Great location for visiting the Volcanoes National Park. We had some family over for dinner one night and they are booking it for a girls weekend. Wish we had stayed it for longer.
