About this cabin rental
If you're looking to truly escape from it all and disconnect from technology while reconnecting to nature and making memories with your family The Lazy Bear is the perfect fit. This secluded cabin is located in an old growth forest on the northern shore of Upper Hamlin Lake and is within a mile of the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Preserve. The Nordhouse Dunes is 3,500 acres along Lake Michigan's eastern shoreline and is great for hiking, camping, beach combing, picnicking and observing nature. It offers approximately 10 miles of trails and can be accessed at the Nurnberg Trailhead just minutes from the cabin.
The historic districts and downtown life of Manistee and Ludington are a 25 minute drive in either direction.
This artisan cabin was recently built by the hosts using cordwood construction techniques. Enjoy the 17 acre property that borders the Manistee National Forest and affords unique wildlife sightings, fishing, hunting, and hiking. Enjoy views of the lake from just outside the cabin and find ease launching kayaks, canoes and the rowboat at the dock along the lake frontage. The frontage is not suitable for docking motor boats, but the Hamlin Lake Boat Launch is only a few minutes from the cabin.
The Lazy Bear offers an open layout living and dining room with lofted ceiling. A modern kitchen that is fully equipped. Bathroom with clawfoot tub and shower. Master bedroom with full bed and large loft space with two twin beds with an optional queen Aerobed that can sleep additional guests.
This unique cabin was designed with a modern rustic interior. The woodwork was sourced from the building site, e.g., cherry trim and maple ceiling. Firewood is provided for the woodstove and can be supplemented by electric baseboard heating.
Guests have full access to the cabin and property, including 5 single kayaks with paddles and life jackets.
The lake frontage is not suitable for swimming as cattails grow along the frontage from the bottom of the lake.
Other amenities include a firepit, gas grill and outside seating.
Pets Allowed (2 pet max). Pet fee(s) of $50/pet will apply

Quiet location out in the woods, but just a short drive to Ludington and the National Park is just down the road to the dunes along Lake Michigan.

We loved being surrounded by nature and we loved the unique design of this cabin. It was so peaceful in the mornings to sit on the hill that overlooks the water. We saw deer daily on the property. We loved the quiet. It is a perfect place to get away from our busy and noisy lives.

Please note that this review is coming from a retired couple in our late 60's in good health.
The property was very nice, clean, organized, well landscaped. The journey to get there was long and the location is secluded to the point of being a concern. In all fairness when we went back and read the description it does say how far away it is from civilization. That did not register with us and that's on us. But quite frankly we did not think any VRBO would be that secluded. We expected a couple other properties to be nearby. We had go 3.5 miles on Nurnberg road which is rutted to the point where we could only go 10 mph to avoid car damage. The forest road was dry and clear but if there is a heavy rainstorm you would need a higher clearance AWD/4WD vehicle. We had no clue where to go to find the dock and kayaks. Perhaps a property map could help future visitors. We did have one cellphone bar and were able to make calls. But in the unforeseen event of a medical emergency it might get dicey given the distance from anything.. I saw reviews where young families enjoyed it and if you are the outdoor type, enjoy hiking in rugged terrain, wilderness and being totally secluded, it's the place to be. Unfortunately,. just a bit too rugged for us.

Location was great for a quite, secluded getaway. The house is super cute and beautiful views of nature. The kids had a wonderful time fishing on the dock. Couple downfalls were that the dock was a bit farther of walk than pictures show. Not a big deal but not fun when lugging a 1 year old up and down the hill. When we arrived I was a little concerned about the house being unlocked and my wife had to sweep and clean a few things before we could settle in. Overall it was a decent getaway and time for family bonding.

It was beautiful there. So much peace and wonderful wildlife. The peaches off the tree were the best I’ve ever tasted. We had a Monopoly game contest going and reading about how the cabin was constructed was fascinating!

Loved the property and everything was clean and cozy. We didn’t spend a lot of time by the water as we had a pup in recovery from surgery, but we did walk down a couple of times and it looked like it was set up for a lot of different water activities. We loved the kitchen, open space, loft area and the outdoor space. We were looking for a trip that was secluded in the woods and we got it! Would definitely recommend to others, but be sure that you’re okay traversing up and down hills as there are a few. There wasn’t a microwave or dishwasher we could find, but we didn’t need it, and the grill already had propane hooked up, so we didn’t need to bring a lot to enjoy our time away. We’re already thinking this will be a nice place to visit again this spring. Overall - LOVED the property and communication with the hosts were easy and quick. Can’t thank them enough for allowing us and our pups to stay. ☺️

Overall a nice place in a secluded location.. loved the old growth forest surrounding the cabin . Enjoyed the naturalist reading material, and leaning about the process for the cordwood construction . I am emailing the property owners with small suggestions on cleanliness ..we could have used a small microwave for heating coffee and boiling water for
Oatmeal .. the shower was not safe with just curtain walls, and I forgot to pack a blow dryer .. The steep hill to reach the lake was a workout but we managed it a few times and collected kindling for fires on the return. We tried the kayaks but water levels were low and the wild rice was high so it was a challenge .. we got some laughs out of the effort. Please look for our email.

We loved this cabin! Relatively 'safe' for our toddler and there was so much to do in the area together! We will definitely vacation here again. I would recommend bringing your own pillows, and the mattress is fairly firm.. we felt fully at home here otherwise.

The home is beautifully built with a library of naturalist information... a quiet location with plenty of room to think and enjoy time with those closest to you.

Beautiful home, serene and spacious. However: not very accommodating for people with a handicap. Nothing was mentioned about the hill the property was on. Unfortunately I was unable to use the kayaks and had great difficulty to get to the cabin due to the slope with wood chips to the front door. Should definitely be part of the advertisement for this cabin. Shower was also not accessible due to the high instep and lack of anti slip in the tub. Bath curtains were dingy, could use a wash. We believe it would be more cozy with window coverings in the evening so you are not looking at black holes. Other than that we did enjoy the area. If I had known about the accessibility of this cabin, I would have looked elsewhere. So please add this to your advertisement! Thank you for letting us use your place!

We loved this property so much. It’s buried deep in the beautiful mature woods. Our family was so impressed with the structure of the cabin, built with logs and the natural wood details throughout the house. We loved that there were no neighbors that we could see and all we could hear were the sounds of nature or an occasional boat traveling through the lake. The kayaks were very much appreciated to explore Lake Hamlin. Get up early and watch the sunrise over the lake!
There were also so many nearby beaches to explore all within a very short drive. We visited Nordhouse Dunes and Magoon Creek Park (both breathtaking), and 5th Avenue Beach (family friendly with a playground) and loved them all! We also visited Orchard market recommended by cabin owners and bought some delicious homemade goods.
We loved our peaceful stay and the opportunity to explore the nearby beautiful beaches. Thank you!

This vacation was definitely a favorite for our family. We loved the cabin, large property and kayaking on the lake. Our kids especially enjoyed looking for wildlife and catching toads. All essentials were provided (including ample firewood for the fire pits) and hosts were very responsive. We did have an issue that was immediately resolved by the hosts. The old air mattress had holes and also needed new bedding. After contacting the host about what we should do, we were surprised arriving back at the cabin after hiking as the new air bed and bedding were waiting for us at the cabin door. We were also initially concerned as this cabin has no air conditioning, but we definitely did not need it because of the cabin being built into a hill and the overall construction of the cabin. We opened windows at night and used a few fans (1 provided, but we brought a few more), and we were comfortable. Overall, we would highly recommend staying here if you are looking for some peace and a few adventures in the wilderness. We are already planning on returning in the future.
