About this cottage rental
Be one of the first to enjoy this Maine waterfront living at its best with stunning ocean views near the Village of Cundy’s Harbor in Harpswell. Kayak and swim from your own protected deep-water dock with mooring.
The circa 1904 home has been lovingly restored (2023) with updated baths, electric, plumbing, and air conditioning. Yet the old-fashioned ice chest (originally supplied with ice from the island’s fresh water pond), beautiful Italian marble fireplace, large kitchen farm sink, and early 1900’s clawfoot tub are all retained. The original Douglas Fir floors have been restored. They're gorgeous!
The Dingley Island Loons Nest sleeps 8 people comfortably, boasting 3 bedrooms plus a double sleep sofa in the first-floor den with ensuite full bathroom and accessible shower. The cottage has 2 additional full baths upstairs, a dining room that seats 8, a first-floor sunporch, a huge well-equipped and well-stocked eat-in kitchen, and a large primary bedroom suite with its own fabulous sunroom with 180 degree ocean views.
Located on an island with bridge access and surrounded by water on 2 sides, this spectacular house exudes old Maine charm and is the perfect home base to explore Maine’s Mid-Coast region. It is only 20 minutes to the restaurants and shops of Brunswick and Bath and to Bowdoin College, 30 minutes to Freeport and Wiscasset, and 45 minutes to Portland as well as to Boothbay Harbor and the Maine Botanical Garden.
Enjoy the quiet neighborhood and island living, perfect for relaxing and watching the tides and local wildlife — including bald eagles, great blue herons, foxes, and mink — who call the island home. You’ll love to call the Dingley Island Loons Nest your home during your stay in the beautiful State of Maine.
Additional notes: The house is not child proof, the fireplace is not operational, and the host/owner lives in the house on the adjacent property (so is readily available for assistance if needed). Rental comes with use of kayaks, canoe, dock, and mooring at your own risk. Not responsible for loss of or damage to renter's or guest's property.

The location, view, and amenities here exceeded our expectations (which were pretty high, based on the property description).
Sally (the host) is very friendly, and made it know through our preferred communication (text) that she was available to answer any questions, and responded quickly when contacted. That said, we never felt their presence right next door imposed on our privacy in any way. At one point a thunderstorm caused the lights to flash, and she put our minds at ease by immediately letting us know there was a generator that would kick on automatically should the power go out.
When we met with Sally toward the end of our visit, she shared the fascinating history of the house, which has been in her family for a long time. The photos around the house made a bit more sense after hearing the stories - fun stuff!
After staying at the Wayside Inn in Sudbury, Ma, we wondered if there were any 'hidden compartments' in the house, where people might leave notes for future visitors - kind of a fun adventure. I'll leave it at that for now, with a wink to Sally...
Thank you for everything! It was the perfect place to contemplate memories of our mother, who lived in the Cundy's Harbor neighborhood for 35 years.

There really are not any words that can express how beautiful this property and home is or how welcome we felt when we arrived at the Loons Nest. Our host Sally had left us a care package stocked with delicious snacks and the house was immaculate. We have never seen a home so clean and curated, it was just amazing. Its hard to know what to look at next, the house or the stunning views of the bay. It was overwhelming and comforting all at the same time. We had a chance to connect with Sally and her husband over drinks, they are as wonderful as the property! The opportunity to get to know the history of this property made us appreciate the uniqueness of the house and the area even more. Looking forward to returning to the Loon's nest soon! Thank you both for an amazing week.

Everything was perfect. Our host (Sally) was incredibly kind and understanding when we had some challenges with our original dates. The issues were our fault and she showed uncommon grace. The house is spectacular- beautiful site, gorgeous antiques, everything you need inside for cooking, and everything you need outside for paddling or playing, We especially loved the old photos of the house that are hung throughout - we went room to room to check them all out and see the house through its long history.
Sally makes use of the home so easy. We selected the door code, she sent a text to make sure we didn't need anything and leaving is simple. Our kids (16,15,10) had a great time paddling, exploring the nearby island, and climbing over and around the rocky coast.
We recommend Giants Steps, Cooks, and the Land's End gift shop. We escaped from the hustle of our lives and enjoyed reading, cooking, hiking, and paddling. Everyone was sad to leave but we left rested and rejuvenated with plans to visit again! This was our best vrbo experience.

It's not possible to capture our stay in this brief review. Best put...you must go and experience it! Of course Maine is beautiful, lobsters delicious -- and from hiking trails to shopping, it is all within short distances. And when you settle back to the house, you are then wrapped in those views and the comfort of an early 1900s family home which has been lovingly brought to today's comforts. The setting of this home is storybook, and it all is further enhanced by the hospitality of Sally and Adam (the hosts). Fresh flowers in the rooms, great towels, sheets, comfortable beds and a kitchen that is stocked beyond any I've experienced. The welcome basket only tips you to the generous and gracious spirit of these hosts. And while you'll be tempted to never leave the property and all it offers, treat yourself to dinner at 555 North in Brunswick for a culinary delight. Thank you Sally and Adam for such a special get-a-way!

The host Sally paid attention to every detail to make our stay amazing. From the welcome basket to bottled waters in every bedroom. The views are breathtaking, the house is an eclectic mix of old and modern. Our daughter had a blast cooking in the kitchen and our sons loved kayaking between the inlets and islands and our parents loved leisurely strolls through the neighborhood. No detail was forgotten right down to the fresh sunflowers on the dining room table. We loved oir time at the Loon’s Nest!!

Our family feels incredibly lucky to have happened upon the Loons Nest in our search for a waterfront stay along the Maine coast. Sally is a wonderful host and has done such a great job restoring this unique, beautiful home. We woke every day to the sun rising over the waters just outside our windows. You could easily spend hours watching the ever-changing scenery from the comfort of the living room or master bedroom. The location is amazing. We spent every day on the water: swimming from the dock, paddling around Dingley Island and exploring the waters by boat. If we needed anything, Sally was always quick to respond. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen well-stocked, and the property was such a great setting to enjoy every minute. We won't soon forget the Loons Nest, and we can't wait to return.

We loved our time at the Dingley Island Loons Nest! Sally (the home owner) had thought of everything we could have possibly wanted and provided a concierge book with instructions for the house and shops, local island restaurants and activities in the area. We followed her recommendations and enjoyed delicious food and great shopping. The house is beautiful and incredibly comfortable. The views from the sunroom and master bedroom are stunning. The kitchen has every pot, pan, dish and utensil you would ever need. Our son (21) went kayaking off the private dock every day (for miles), and there are four kayaks so our entire family could kayak together. (Like jackets and beach towels provided.) The water off the dock was calm and was perfect for beginners. We enjoyed the swing and chairs outside at all times of the day. It was an easy drive to Brunswick for grocery shopping and more restaurants. We have rented other homes through VRBO before- this was by far the best. We can’t wait to return!

We were nervous about taking a chance on a listing that had no reviews, but so glad we did. To start, the house is beautiful and restored to perfection. THE VIEWS! Holy cow, they were breathtaking! I couldn't ask for a better way to wake up in the morning! The rooms were decorated beautifully and everything was immaculately clean. The kitchen was completely stocked with anything you could want and/or need, such as silverware, cooking supplies, bbq, cleaning supplies etc. We took advantage of the private dock to enjoy some outdoor activities such as kayaking and fishing.
The owner, Sally, was always quick to respond with any questions and beyond accommodating. The worst part of the trip was leaving. I will truly miss this gem of a property but have no doubt, of returning it in the future.
