About this cottage rental
“Smugglers Blues” is a traditional granite block built eighteenth century former fisherman's cottage situated in the quiet heart of the famous, picturesque, and vibrant fishing village of Fowey; one of the most renowned and beautiful riverside villages in all Cornwall. Ideally situated on Rose Hill, it gives quick access; just 4/5 minutes’ walk; to the bustling village, yet is set back enough to maintain a quiet and tranquil setting for those moments of relaxation and rest which is an essential part of any holiday.
For those who are “gastronauts” (whilst not in the Oxford English dictionary, the term refers to food lovers) or simply enjoy their food, Fowey and the surrounding area is also home to 9 of top 30 “Best Places to Eat in Cornwall” according to the Sunday Times 2024. And for those not on the list, Fowey provides several different types of cuisines to choose from (see my guide).
The property itself offers accommodation for up to five people through 2 bedrooms and a double sofa bed if required. There are two outside areas with a high walled, private courtyard garden for relaxing afternoons in the sun, BBQ’s and the essential evening sundowners. Through the nature of the aspect of the cottage, the rear garden has the benefit of sun all day round, from the moment the sun comes up over the estuary until the sun sets over Fowey Hill; at which point, it should be time to hit the village and sample the nightlife.
The village offers everything you could want; a wide and varied selection of shops from clothing, arts and craft, food/wine, and souvenirs; an extensive selection of pubs, bistros, and restaurants offering standard pub fayre all the way up to award winning fine cuisine. (word of warning; from experience the walk back up the hill can be a tad longer than the 4/5 minute walk down; not least depending on how much nightlife you sample ?)
The charming quayside offers a variety of ferry rides; including the five minute ride over to Polruan, fishing cruises, and self-drive motor boat hire… as well the opportunity to try your hand at crabbing and shrimping off the harbour wall. The beautiful Readymoney beach is a sight inspiring 10 minute walk from the village centre taking in some of the fantastic harbour and sea views that Fowey offers.
And for those not so great days; which our great country does “occasionally” experience, there is a great selection of books and board games. For the more visual minded, there is an extensive DVD collection; ranging from children’s movies, romantic comedies, action movies, box sets, thrillers, B/W classics, naturally there are a few James Bond’s to be found, and for any rugby fans; well there’s enough to keep you busy for a few days, especially if you’re a Lions fan. For any budding surfers, you have the benefits of some true classics..

The property is situated on a hill slightly outside the busy town centre of Fowey. The surroundings are quiet and access is easy, the harbour and all amenities can be reached on foot within a short walk. Upon arrival, we found everything as described, the cottage was neat and clean. Communication with the owner was thoroughly superb and very friendly. We had a small problem with a malfunctioning toaster, but the owner instantly arranged to have a new one delivered, even though he was on holiday himself. All things considered, we can only highly recommend the property when visiting beautiful Cornwall.

We had a great week, but I think sometime the property will need a deep clean.
It also could do with a brush or dustpan and brush so you have the opportunity to brush any mess up.

We had a great stay. The cottage was well equipped with a wonderful view!

Had a lovely few days at this cottage. Very comfortable. In a great location for days out or just for a walk into town (the hill climb back up is pretty steep).

We had a lovely stay in this house. All very proper and in good condition.
From this location you can easily make the most beautiful walks next to the coast line. The guidelines from James are really helpful.
Fowey is Cosy little town with an astonishing sea view. The regatta week created an additional boost with many nice sailing boots and events.
Fowey needs an return visit!

We’ve had a wonderful time in Smuggler’s Blues. It’s a nice accommodation, very well located only 5 minutes walking distance from the centre. It’s a great place for walks along the coast.

Cosy cottage mostly as described, and great location for popping into Fowey and the surrounding beautiful coastline, as well as visiting Eden project and Heligan. A few glitches with curtains, lack of storage in front bedroom and no access to Sky TV/ catch up TV. Choice of Dvds though and overall a great stay for the 2 of us.

We had a great stay here. We’ve stayed in many places in Fowey and this was probably the most peaceful and yet within a short walk of the centre. Communications with the host were excellent and access to the property straightforward. We were able to store our kayak at the property and the outside space at the back was great for al fresco breakfasts. Great walks along the coast and around the estuary and good food in the town as usual! Would definitely stay again!

It was a good choice👍
It was a beautiful time in an atmospheric cottage. There is everything you need for a short or long stay. Rooms clean and decorated in blue colors. Very comfortable beds and a nice view in the large bedroom. Excellent contact with the host. James has prepared for us information on where to eat well and explore the area. We will definitely come back someday.

Great Cottage, really good location
Comfortable cottage, 3 sofas in the sitting room! really is close to the main town but very quiet. Well equipped kitchen and good size table for eating in the sitting room. Fowey is sweet with lots of good individual shops and restaurants, also a great center for exploring Cornwall.

Perfect place to stay
The cottage is the perfect base - 3 minute walk downhill to the town centre. Comfortable and clean with everything we needed for self catering. James even left us wine as a welcome gift. We would definitely stay here again.

Fabulous Stay
This was our second stay at this cottage and yet again it didn’t disappoint. We had a fabulous weeks stay in Fowey, an area we love. The cottage is homely, comfortable and fully equipped with all amenities needed. When we arrived, the welcome gift of wine was a treat from James (the owner)! James is a great host and able to answer any queries we had. He is knowledgable about Fowey and also provided information about some stunning local walks which are a must! We recommend the walk to Polruin on a Sunday and lunch at the Lugger. Yum! The cottage is perfectly situated a short walk downhill to the pretty harbour. We will be definitely visit again. Thank you once again James!

Great cottage, great location and great holiday
James is a great host. Sent me lots of information on Fowey before arriving and was very helpful pre trip and during our stay.
The cottage is a 10 minute down hill walk to the town and quite an uphill climb home. Lovely large sitting room with breakfast table leading through to the kitchen and outside decking. (Fridge to small for a family of 4)
Overall a gorgeous cottage and would stay again.

Glorious Stay
Great stay in a great cottage for my ocean paddle race training. Very appreciative of James for letting me keep a board there. The cottage is really a home from home, delightfully quiet setting away from the hustle and bustle of Fowey, but also only six or seven minutes to be in the action and grabbing a beer by the river... comfortable beds, lovely fresh smelling linen and towels and a fabulous DVD collection for a rainy day.. Thank you James, great host.

We had a short break over the bank holiday weekend. The location of the cottage is superb as it’s walking distance from shops, restaurants and the harbour. The cottage is very cosy however the second bedroom is quite small. It was cramped for two teenage girls , however would be fine for younger children. Loved the decking space at the back as we had some glorious sunshine when we were there. Also loved the super comfortable bed in the master bedroom. Thank you James, we had an amazing time!

The cottage is very nice, clean and comfortable and in a quiet location. Parking is some distance away, but then this is a problem throughout coastal Cornwall. The walk home from the town is short and pleasant but up rather a steep hill. Overall though, very nice.

A beautiful cottage
This is a beautifully maintained and clean cottage suitable for 6. The cottage has a real feel of light and airyness and was immaculate. Bedrooms are fresh and the bed super comfortable. The double room at the rear affords lovely rooftop views towards the harbour. The shower is hot and strong and there is a lovely terrace sun trap at the rear. Easy walking access to the harbour, I would love to visit again. Thank you.
