About this cottage rental
Up a forest track, the third of four properties with forest outlook immediately to the front and forest walks right from the doorstep, The Old Chapel has been sympathetically converted to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. It oozes character. It is situated on the edge of the village of Yorkley (population approx 1,000). The cottage is 80% pine clad (walls and ceilings) giving it a very warm and relaxing feel throughout. It has been furnished to give a 'home from home' feel all in wood and/or neutral colours. The general atmosphere is rustic, with mostly wooden floors and brick window cills, it is something 'a bit different'.
Our favourite time to stay in the Forest is the first week in June when all the trees and plants are newly out and the view from our sofas is stunning.
There are two bedrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. Both rooms have a double bed, so the cottage accommodates four people comfortably.
The upstairs bedroom is on a mezzanine overlooking the lounge. There is no door to this room.
The downstairs bedroom is just off the lounge and could affect light sleepers.
The only things that wake you up is birdsong!
The lounge/dining room is large, and looks larger because it has 14 foot high ceilings, mostly covered in wood panelling. We have three sofas in the lounge, all of which are comfortable - who doesn't want to relax on holiday?
The beast of a wood burner in the lounge gives a very relaxed feel in the evenings, along with some candles which we keep there. Very romantic!
The kitchen is small but very well stocked as we like cooking (and eating).
There is a dishwasher and a 6 foot tall fridge/freezer - more than enough to store a week's food for a family.
The garden is small, but there is a forest on the doorstep.
We have two reclining garden chairs in the back garden and a small BBQ should you wish to 'eat out'.
We hate holiday places that have no character, and have tried really hard to make sure that our one does . It is very well furnished so there should not be anything missing for your stay, but if there is, please let us know!
If you are bringing a little one with you, we keep a travel cot, stairgate and high chair in the cottage.
A really romantic place to escape, leave all your troubles behind and just chill!

Absolutely loved our break at the Old Chapel. Great communications with Doreen prior to arriving and the property itself was amazing. Lovely quiet location and was very comfortable, also a lot bigger than we were expecting. Highly recommend

The property was in an ideal location. Quiet yet only 10 minutes from a local town and 10 minutes from Forest of Dean. Easy to get to and easy to find.
The property itself had everything we need, it was clean fully stocked and very comfortable.
Host answered all our messages within minutes.
Very happy overall and would recommend.

Doreen is delightful, very helpful and answers queries, questions very quickly…. Very nice lady. The Old Chapel was beautiful, cozy, homely and had everything that you could possibly need for your stay. So much thought has been put into the decor, the renters needs whilst away from home…. Such a wonderful experience. The description of the chapel was spot on and the wonderful wooded location was not exaggerated at all, we experienced, rabbits, squirrels, sheep literally just outside the doors….. we were able weather wise to sit outside and take it all in and savour the moments. The neighbours were friendly and informative also. We have been so taken up by this picturesque place that we have also booked up for a week in April 2024. Can’t come soon enough!

Doreen was an excellent host who communicated very well, prompt, helpful and incredibly friendly. The old chapel was heaven the only noise you heard when you woke was bird song.
The level of comfort was far superior to anywhere else we have stayed. The old chapel was equipped with everything you needed and more including a folder with anything you needed to know and more.
The neighbours are super friendly and everyone stop to chat. The surrounding area was beautiful and peaceful. If you want to go somewhere when life was more simple and unwind and relax then the old chapel is the place to go. It was the most amazing wonderful Christmas break.

We came across a few items while we were staying in the cottage . These are as follows .
Cleanliness
- bathroom shower plug was full of hair.
- Quite dusty in places
Bathroom mirror was dirty
- Tap in kitchen was dirty
- Metal in bathroom had scum on
- Rusty Mirrors
- Dirty bathroom shelf
- Rusty bath plug
- When bath was turned on black rust came out of it.
Kitchen
Kitchen cupboard when you come in stinks of damp. The cutlery stinks of damp. It put me of cooking as it really badly smells. I had to wash cutlery before I used as it smells
Out of date complementary biscuits.
- the biscuits that were provided were 2 months out of date. 2 went off in June and 2 went off in July. The milk that was in the basket was also out of date. My partner had a biscuit and cup of tea with the milk and the biscuit and had a bad belly the next day. He didn't realize until he checked date next day ( I have pics of biscuits out of date)
I messaged the host when we got back as i know she did not live near. She was very rude and said all my pictures i could of got all off the internet. All my pictures are time stamped and it says the location so they were taken at the cottage.
The host was well aware of the damp smell as in the cupboards she has things to cover up damp smell.
I messaged the Host and said i should be compensated some how. She asked my opinion and i said i would like some money back and she said im a bully and my behavior is unacceptable. She also said she will tell everyone on VRBO that im a bully as i complained about trivial things, Avoid at all cost.

Great accommodation at wonderful location
We really enjoyed our stay in this property, very comfortable beds, and an enormously well equipped kitchen. The fact that you can walk and look straight into the forest from the French doors made it all the more enjoyable.
Communication with the owner was really good too, with very quick replies. We would definitely return.

Lovely, quiet, relaxing!
Excellent place to stay if you want to chill out. Unfortunately one of our party had a bad knee so couldn't make the most of the forest walks right on the doorstep.
There is a pub that serves nice food in walking distance.
Property had everything you could ask for and was very clean, had a lovely bathroom, log fire and lots of character.
One if the bedrooms is on the mezzanine floor and 'open' but was very roomy.
If you want a relaxing place to stay would highly recommend.

Comfortable cottage in a secluded and beautiful setting
When we first arrived, we were extremely impressed with the spacious layout of the place. The cottage had everything from a tumbledryer to a huge TV with Netflix and Amazon Prime. The house was extremely comfortable and warm with games, books, an Alexa and a plethora of films. The entire family slept well in the spacious bedrooms, and there was plenty of natural light. My family are very particular about bathrooms, but the lavatory in the house was extremely nice in the sense that it had a shower, a bathtub and in general... nice facilities. Leaflets were supplied for lots of local landmarks and pubs. Finally, the forest outside was extremely picturesque. There are many beautiful nature walks a stone's throw from the house. Everything one would need could be found in the cottage, and we are very satisfied.
Thank you for such an amazing stay!

Fabulous place to stay
Absolutely everything you need for a perfect break.
The Old Chapel is home from home and right on the edge of the forest. The owner is so helpful and went out of her way to find places I could take my Mother in her wheelchair.
Can't praise it highly enough.

Our short stay at the Old Chapel
We had a wonderful break in the converted Chapel. The property was excellent in every way. We especially enjoyed lighting up the log burner after a walk in the forest which is right outside your door!

Idyllic cosy, spacious, warm and inviting getaway
We had a very peaceful relaxing time at the old chapel, and loved the fact that the forest was our front garden. The owners have literally made home from home providing games dvds and books etc! We loved log burner on our one night in and felt this place more than met our needs. The kitchen and bathroom were both very modern and the owners were kind enough to provide teas coffee and biscuits which were thoroughly enjoyed 😀😀.
The Forest of Dean has so much to offer from cycle trails to prison tours and enchanted woods so there is no shortage of fun for all ages. We were lucky enough to see 3 wild boar whilst out cycling in the forest which added to our magical stay at the old chapel.
We would definitely go back and definitely recommend it.
Thank you having us Doreen.

We had a wonderful stay at The Old Chapel the accommodation is second to none, very comfortable, very well equipped, never been in a holiday let so well equipped, Doreen has thought of everything. The property is on the edge of the forest with lovely walks around the Forest of Dean, lots to see near by, wonderful scenery.
No question was too trivial for Doreen to answer she was very helpful. Thanks for making our stay so good.

lovely cottage
We booked the cottage to spend a family holiday with our daughter. If you are looking for a quiet place in the middle of nature this is the place for you. We have enjoyed walks through the forest every morning and evening. The cottage was incredibly well equipped. We've literally found everything from kitchen tools to games, DVD's and even a sawing kit!!! Surprisingly enough coal for the barbecue was also available for our last minute decision of having a barbecue! We enjoyed cooked family meals so it was handy to have access to the supermarket (Tesco was about 10 min drive). Overall the place was clean and tidy and had some lovely features which we appreciated. As for the owners, Doreen was exceptionally prompt in dealing with our emails and the detailed information pack she posted beforehand was very helpful in reaching the cottage. I would also mention that she was extremely helpful after leaving the property too, which in not that common nowadays!
We had a lovely time at The Old Chapel and for us was truly a home away from home!!

The Chapel and its surroundings was absolutely beautiful. The cottage was beyond fully equipped, and for any N. American travelers I can testify that the plumbing and water pressure was excellent - no need to worry! 100% satisfied and hope to return.

Charming Cottage In a Lovely Location
We stayed in the Old Chapel for 5 nights in mid-June. It is in a quiet location on the edge of the forest. It is very well-maintained and has everything we required to make our holiday relaxing and comfortable. Every amenity we could think of was available. Besides walking the many forest paths right outside the front door, we enjoyed a bike ride and a visit to Mallards Pike, as well as a visit to nearby Puzzlewood and Chepstow Castle. The chapel was conveniently located for us to make separate day excursions to both Stratford-Upon-Avon and Bath, as well. The owner, Doreen, is very pleasant to deal with and really went out of her way, above and beyond, to make our visit as smooth as possible - even so far as to make a trip to Heathrow to find the best route for us to the chapel! We would highly recommend the Old Chapel to others seeking a relaxing get away.

A super relaxing break away cottage.
A really friendly and helpful host. Lots of information provided and instructions within the cottage were easy.
This was a peaceful and well equipped holiday home with every little detail thought of. We loved the open fire the most and the gorgeous window in the gallery bedroom let light in to make it spacious. A great home for a family to get away to with a small drive to Ross on wye / Symmonds Yatt.
We loved it! Thank you.

The Old Chapel is so well equipped , there was nothing that we needed that was not there. The situation is so lovely right next to the forest and the place has a wonderful atmosphere. Would highly recommend!

A beautiful cottage, very well equipped and so welcoming, even decorated for Christmas. It was warm, clean and comfortable. We especially enjoyed the wood burning stove given the time of year. Nice welcoming letter from Doreen explaining everything. We visited Coleford, Symonds Yat ( unfortunately no Peregrines sighted), Lydney and the pub in the village a few times. And of course walked in the lovely forest. A good holiday all round.

The property is the perfect little Gem!
We stayed in November for a winter break and as soon as we arrived it felt like home from home! Very clean and Cosy, the decor and features within the property are lovely and the fire place is amazing! The surroundings are quiet but at the same time every thing you need is a short distance. Most importantly the owners cared about our stay.

We had a lovely week in the Old Chapel. The location was excellent for direct access to walks in the forest and easy access to the numerous bike routes in the area - and was a pleasant bike ride to the excellent cross country and downhill tracks at Cannop. There are also a few pubs in the village within easy walking distance and lots more a short drive away. The Old Chapel itself was very impressive - extremely spacious and well equipped even including a wood burner for those chilly evenings. Lots to visit in the area and would definitely recommend.
