About this house rental
About this listing
Two story home on property originally occupied by the present owners’ great-great-great-great-great grandfather in the 1780s. When his great granddaughter Charlotte Hunt married George Marshall, they were given 600 acres on which they built a home in 1853 and called it Lansdowne. The Marshalls planned a wooded country estate similar to those surrounding the great homes of England but after the loss of their Louisiana cotton plantations following the Civil War, Lansdowne was operated as a working plantation with cotton and corn, sheep and cattle until the 1960s. The present owners are the fifth generation of Marshalls to live at Lansdowne. Their children and grandchildren, the sixth and seventh generations, visit for long weekends and holidays as often as possible. The property is now 120 acres of fields, pastures, ponds, and woodlands heavily wooded with pine trees, oaks and magnolias and home to hummingbirds and cuckoos, wood ducks, herons and egrets, red tailed hawks, Mississippi kites, pileated woodpeckers, great horned owls, rabbits, foxes, deer and wild turkeys. Whether sipping a mint julep on the gallery, fishing or enjoying a quiet reflection by the pond, or walking through the fields in search of berries, you will find beauty and tranquility at Lansdowne, just 10 minutes from downtown Natchez.
The space
Two story home with two spacious bedrooms, living and dining rooms, kitchen and laundry in a renovated 1850s brick dependency which in the nineteenth century was home to the cook, children’s nurse and the butler, plus the outdoor kitchen and washing and ironing room. Furnished with four poster double bed, charming iron Queen bed and a single Murphy bed. Another single bed or air mattress or folding bed available on request. Two bedrooms on the second floor have one connecting door, and separate entrances to spacious shared bathroom with marble tiled walk-in shower. Each bedroom also has a private entrance from the upper gallery. WiFi, TV with Roku for Netflix, Amazon and more. Two covered galleries, large patio and beautiful grounds with roses, lilies, azaleas, magnolias and more. Children welcome. No smoking or pets. Your stay includes a tour of the main house, built in 1853 and decorated with original furnishings and family mementos.

This was a unique and amazing stay. Our girls LOVED playing with the dogs and cats and Marsha was an excellent host.
The kitchen could use a deep, thorough cleaning as wells as more dishes and flatware.
We loved our stay here and would definitely stay again!

Had a wonderful time in Natchez

When planning our trip to Natchez, we chose to stay here primarily because of the property's historical significance. We were not disappointed. The experience was better than we could have imagined.
The house is old, that's why we chose it, and because of that there are several quirky things. The steep, narrow stairs were hard on my worn-out knees, but each time I slowly went up the stairs, I thought about the people who worked and lived here in the past. I was fascinated by the large built-in cauldron beside the fireplace in the dining room. Once again, I wondered about the people who worked there and how they used the cauldron.
Marsha was great, finding time to give us a tour of the main house even though she had to go out of state unexpectedly. Learning about the house and its history from an ancestor was amazing. We came to Natchez to tour homes and learn history, and here we were, learning the history of the property where we were staying.
As I wrote my weekly newspaper column sitting at the dining room table, I used source material from the extensive library in the living room. I felt sad because there were so many books and so little time.
The courtyard is beautiful, and we loved the cats, especially Oreo. The grounds are a beautiful place to take a morning walk, with many photo opportunities. Listening to the birds sing and hearing the woodpeckers drumming on the trees in such a beautiful setting was magical.
I highly recommend staying here if you are looking for an old home steeped in history.

We had a great visit to Lansdowne. Marsha was cordial and kind. We felt like she was truly interested to know about us and ensure we enjoyed staying at her family home. She was engaging with our daughter who was obsessed with the cats that live there. The vrbo space was full of family history and great furnishings. We will definitely stay there again. Thanks, Marsha! Give our best to Cali, Oreo and Kit-Cat!

Cozy, clean and welcoming
I stayed at the Landsdowne with my husband, his mother and my two sons (ages 8 & 10). I was amazed at the amount of space we had in the house and how clean it was. My mother in law was able to stay in the first floor bedroom which has its own bathroom. My husband, children and I stayed in the 2 bedrooms upstairs which has a beautifully renovated bathroom. The upstairs bedrooms have access to the balcony which was lovely in the mornings, we would also get visited by Oreo the very friendly cat. The boys loved all the space to run and explore on the property and pet Rover the very friendly dog. Marsha our hostess was so friendly, we thoroughly enjoyed visiting her family’s home and learning it’s history. We feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to stay at the Landsdowne and will cherish memories of our time spent there.

Charming and comfortablee
We loved our stay at this historic home. The owner had the lights on and heat going before we got there. It was very peaceful and we slept very well on the comfortable beds. We were extremely grateful to have coffee available as we forgot ours so we bought a container at a nearby store and left it for the next guests. We will definitey visit here again

This place was a treat-like stepping back into history. The complementary tour of the main home was so very nice. Charlotte, our tour guide, was a delight. We had everything we needed there in the house. It was well cooked and quiet inside the house. The grounds were beautiful. The only thing that would have made our stay even better would have been hot water in the downstairs bath.

This is the first time staying at Lansdowne Quarters. We usually stay at a hotel when visiting. No more! This was wonderful! I learned so much just by enjoying everything preserved, esp. photos in the home. I have always wanted to sleep in a canopy bed and FINALLY got my wish!! I accidentally locked myself out the first day and with a quick text, the owners gave me assistance of what to do. I loved sitting on the front porch with Oreo, the cat who welcomes all visitors and sits for a while. We will be back!

This one of the coolest properties I have stayed in; with a rich history, architecture and furniture true to the 1850's made for a unique one-of-a-kind experience for our family. The property was clean and very comfortable. So quiet at night, I slept like a baby. We were lucky with the weather that it was clear and cool in the evening to sit on the upstairs porch and view the stars - something we don't get to do in the city. And we enjoyed morning hikes on the property. And I loved the shower - a modern addition to the house that is very relaxing. My only recommendation for this property would be to replace the microwave wit a new one.
