I recently stayed at a VBRO property with my family, and I must say it was a disappointing experience. The place was filthy and hadn't received a proper cleaning in a long time. The carpets were absolutely disgusting, and the upstairs bathroom had a persistent moldy smell.
One of the advertised highlights was the game room, but it turned out to be a letdown. It was actually a cold garage with a cheap Walmart pool table that wasn't even level. Since we visited during winter, the lack of heating made the game room unusable.
We hold high standards for cleanliness, and this property clearly fell short. Even the light fixture on the ceiling fan was hanging precariously from just one wire. Fortunately, after calling the host, someone was sent to fix it. However, this didn't make up for the overall state of the property.
I would compare this place to a low-end Super 8 hotel. Considering the hefty price we spent on our stay, it was a huge disappointment. I strongly urge the owner to take action.
Firstly, remove the nasty carpets and replace them with durable laminate flooring that can be easily cleaned.
Secondly, hire a professional cleaning service to clean the property thoroughly after each stay.
The road down to the property was very steep and not pave.
This property has the potential to be great, but major improvements are needed.
This review is intended to give the owner a chance to improve and future guests the ability to make an informed choice.

For the most part the house was the right size for us (we had 5 adults). It could have been cleaned a bit more. Found a lot of dust, cob webs, etc. I had my parents with me and for them the Funiture was a bit uncomfortable. Beds were great. The garbage cans were a bit far and with weather conditions, could be hard to walk down hill to the back. It rained the whole weekend we were there so the down hill walk was a bit slippery. The house was in a great location for what we needed to do. Kitchen well stocked with everything. Could have used a bit more towels. All in all, a very nice place.

We've stayed at this property twice in the past few years and it is delightful. It is clean, it is spacious and it is in a good location in the heart of the Finger Lakes. We have family with lakefront property nearby, so that's where we go to get our Owasco Lake fix (since there's no lake access with this house), but we are very happy with the home -- very clean, lots to do with young kids (we appreciated all of the games and toys for our 3 year old son), and it's in a great location to get access to all the Finger Lakes has to offer. We will be sure to book a stay here again in the future!

Comfortable stay in a peaceful location
My family & I enjoyed our stay. We were very comfortable and relaxed in this well outfitted home. My son was very happy with the abundance of toys to play with on the back sun room. The fire pit was a great place to congregate on cool nights. We enjoyed the offerings of the kitchen which made cooking breakfast a breeze and the grill covered lunch/dinner. The beds were very comfortable and the air conditioners kept the house comfortable during the hot days. We would absolutely recommend this house if you are looking to stay in the Owasco lake area.

We were there for my sister’s funeral
My husband and I and one of my other sisters and her 2 adult daughters stayed at this property. It was perfect for what our needs were Don was very kind and gracious to us. The price was very reasonable as this was a very expensive trip for all of us. The house is not on the water but we were not interested in any of that so it didn’t matter, but it was roomy, had lots of games and pool table and clean and comfortable.

Nice property but some information is misleading
This house is clean and spacious. The beautiful yard with firepit and hammock is great. Garage turned gameroom is perfect for kids/family fun. There are many fans in the house, but there's no AC. The nights were warm even with the windows open and all of the fans running. Overall, this is a nice property but there are things that potential guests should be aware of since the description is not entirely accurate and is probably a little overpriced. The statement that the lake is a "short walk" away is a literally accurate statement, but you're not permitted to actually walk to the lake. The description does state that there is no direct lake access but be aware that you can't walk anywhere near it as the road you'd use to walk to it appears to be a private driveway and the property between this house and the lake is all private. Also, the statement that you're able to look out to the lake while you grill is misleading. The only views of the lake are, although pretty, small glimpses above the neighbor's trees from inside the house, as this house sits on a hill, a distance from the lake, behind houses that appear to actually be on the lake. Those houses have trees that block all views of the lake except the glimpses I mentioned. Under the "amenities" list in the description, it states this property is "waterfront." This is outright false since the lake side of the house fronts only the back of the property of the houses actually on the lake. The statements about the kayaks are misleading also. What is actually there are 3 kayaks and ONE cartop transport device to transport ONE of the 3 kayaks. At least one of the kayaks is a double so it is possible for 2 guests to drive that kayak to the closest boat launch (5.4 miles away per Google) at Emerson Park in the city of Auburn. Unless you have an additional vehicle or trailer that can also transport 1 or both of the other kayaks, the other 2 kayaks are useless and really should not be mentioned as a feature of this property without making it clear that the guest must bring their own transport system for both of them. The location of this property is excellent, within a reasonable drive of Ithica, countless waterfalls, wineries, state parks and quaint towns along the way. The city of Auburn has some great restaurants and Wegman's grocery is excellent. Because of the misleading statements about the lake which the rates are based on, I'm giving a 3 star rating instead of 4.

Girls Weekend
This was an awesome house, awesome location. Terrible neighbors, terrible communication with the property manager. We called him to try to figure out kayaks, and did not ever receive a call back. Disappointed in the communication, as we could not use them. However, we loved the property, and the city of Auburn! We had so much fun enjoying the beautiful fall weather, hiking, and local wineries. The game room and fire pit were fantastic. Definitely a great place for a fall getaway.

Great short stay in the Fingerlakes
We had a nice, short stay on Owasco Lake in early August to visit with family. The property was perfectly advertised and well appointed, and we would certainly consider staying there again!

The descriptions of this place are lies
The property is listed as “Auburn Lakefront home”. Not only is it not waterfront but a neighbor called the police when we attempted to use the lake. The description says “sip your morning coffee on the dock”. We were not permitted on the lake. “ Enjoy our three kayaks.” There were only two. Also the kayaks could not be moved without a trailer. None was provided. The person who called the police told us that there were pending lawsuits against the owner. The presentation was a complete misrepresentation of the truth. The management company did not call me back a after learning of the issues. Unhappy and shaken by the intrusion of the police, we stayed only two nights. I have asked for a refund of the night we did not stay but it’s been days and there is no answer.

Nice family home in a lake community
We had a nice week's stay at this property — the fire pit, grill, kitchen, and separated sunroom gave the four of us plenty of space to spread out and relax or come together easily. House is stocked with plenty of spices, cooking supplies, and even kayaks (free) and a golf cart (extra $) for you to use. The town is a short drive away and you can access the lake from there (no direct lake access from the house.) Overall, good value for the area to explore the Finger Lakes region. Thank you Ron and Irina!

Great for a Fall Famiky Vacation
We had an amazing weekend staying in this beautiful home. The fire pit was used for s’mores both nights! The fall air was enjoyed in the hammock while games were played in the garage. We enjoyed board games, watching movies, and delicious meals in the fully equipped home. And the lake house decor is perfect and inviting!! Previous reviews mentioned not being on the water or having access, but we didn’t need those amenities and we could see the lake from the enclosed patio. My kids loved their room, and my dad was able to enjoy the master suite. And the golf cart was an added bonus that had us all laughing with fun. Highly recommend a stay here, and the owner was easy and quick to communicate with. Would definitely stay here again.

Not a lakefront home
The house is very comfortable, clean and well stocked. It provides a relaxing getaway. But, renters should be aware that it is not a lakefront home. To get to the lake, which is barely visible over the treeline from the house, one must walk down a dirt road and descend several flights of stairs. This property is not directly on the lake. It has lake access. Although this was not at all what we were expecting, since our children are older and we were only staying for the weekend, it was manageable. I would not recommend it for a family with small children. We did however really enjoy the availability of the kayaks, although they were short one paddle in the lockbox provided.

We never spent one night of the three we booked. Came and left. Online description deceiving!
We were very disappointed with this rental property as the description in the overview stated that it was lakeside. Lakeside defined by Webster's dictionary is "located on the side of the lake." The only way to get to the lake from this property is by a steep, treacherous set of winding, wooden, extremely slippery stairs. The staircase had no sides so you could easily slip through into a rocky ravine below. There are no signs warning of the danger and our son almost took a spill right off them! There is a picture of the staircase on the website but it only shows the bottom landing so it is very deceiving.
The website also boasts of a beautiful lake view but we could barely see the lake through the trees that were fully in season at the time we had booked unlike the advertised picture that was taken before there were even any buds on the trees. Since there was nothing for our family to enjoy without the potential for danger we packed the car back up and went home the very same day never spending one night at the property. We made four phone calls to the guest contact person before leaving only having him pick up once at which time we had already sent him an email explaining our dissatisfaction and the fact that we were intending not to stay. I asked him to review the email then call me back. He never called me back so we left.
The description of this property online was misrepresented, none of the issues we had with the property could have been changed before our arrival. We booked the property to enjoy the lake but realized upon arrival that in order to get to the lake we would be endangering our family. Our family lost a substantial amount of money and we were all very disappointed but there was nothing at that property for us to stay for without the risk of slipping off a staircase into a rocky ravine. We are hoping for some compensation as we never stayed one night.
Unhappy customers!
