About this house rental
Two floors that can be completely independent - perfect for an extended family!
Your jaw will drop when you come to the end of the driveway and look out over the ocean to the view of Acadia. The entire property is called Main Stay, and this house is known as 'The Barn', but don't be fooled by it's name. This building has been lovingly cared for and recently renovated, with every comfort in mind. Each floor has 1,000 square feet of living space.
What makes this rental so unique is the way it is configured. Each floor can be used as an entirely separate unit, because each has a full kitchen, bath, sleeping, dining, and living area. There are three separate sleeping areas with very comfortable beds. The Barn at Mainstay can easily accommodate three couples, with two fold out sofa beds with brand new mattresses that are great for kids. The property would be ideal for two families traveling together, or for extended families. One favorite feature that brings lots of comments is the antique cast iron sink in the kitchen.

This property was remarkable. Gorgeous views. Great location. But most of all relaxing - it felt like home. The kids enjoyed exploring the shoreline as well as the grownups. We enjoyed the fire pit and cooking over the fire. The owners Liz and Mike were the most friendly, accommodating people. They felt like family. Can’t wait to come back. Would definitely recommend a stay here.

What an amazing property right on the water! We had a great time staying at 'the barn'. The house is very clean and well stocked. It is secluded on a large property that made us feel like we were alone yet you can get to Bar Harbor, Acadia etc. with a short drive. Our host, Liz, was excellent! We look forward to renting again.

My family and I had a wonderful time here. It was such a beautiful, peaceful location for us to stay and very close to Acadia for us to go hike during the day. Kids had a great time playing on the beach area and the stars were amazing at night. Liz was a great and helpful host.

The pictures don't do this place justice, it is beautiful! The kids had a wonderful time playing in the tidepools and finding all kinds of sea animals. Definitely recommend for all ages!

This vacation rental exceeded our expectations! We were 2 families with kids from 6 to 15, There is only one real bedroom but plenty of space to sleep everyone. We loved to have breakfast at the long table, bbqs outside and s’mores at the fire pit. The location was perfect for day trips to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor.

This was the best stay of our life. The location was great, nothing can beat the waterfront views. We felt right at home when we arrived. Amazing hosts, beautiful quiet area with gorgeous views and the overall incredible stay. Definitely recommend.

We had a wonderful time staying at The Barn. Oak Point is a nice, quiet spot on the doorstep to MDI. Perfect for making day trips to Acadia NP, Bar Harbor, or even the quiet side of the island! The Barn is also a very comfortable spot to just hang out and relax with amazing views of the mountains of MDI over the water views of the Western Bay of the Mt Desert Narrows. Perfect spot to launch our paddle boards with plenty of wildlife (birds, deer, seals!) viewing.

We had a great stay at the Barn! Our family of 5 stayed there comfortably. The location of the home is gorgeous on its own and about a 30 minute drive to Bar Harbor or Seal Harbor. It’s very relaxing to sit and watch the activity in the water out front. We were fortunate to spot a seal or two every day. Bring binoculars with you! We also brought kayaks along and were able to use them right from the shore. The water was calm as glass most mornings then too rough to use them from an onshore ore breeze usually by afternoon.
Our hosts were onsite in a neighboring home which was nice if we needed anything (which we really didn’t - everything was provided in the home!)
The layout is a little quirky so pay attention to the listing. There are ample places to sleep but only one private bedroom and only 2 “real” mattresses - the others are pull-out couch or futon type beds in common areas. There are plenty of pillows, towels and sheets and 2 sets of washers and dryers, though when we visited the front loading washer on the first floor had quite a mold odor.
The first floor kitchen is very well supplied! It had all the cookware we have at home and more. The closest big grocery store is about 20 minutes away but there was a smaller store in Trenton about 12 minutes or so away. There is also a kitchen on the second floor that we didn’t use.
The balcony upstairs has 2 nice chairs on it since the photos were taken. Very nice to sit out and enjoy the view.
Lovely home!

My wife and I are just back from 10 days at Liz’s place. The location of the house could not better! Direct water front with views of Acadia but away from the crowds of Bar Harbor. The house was very clean upon arrival. Check-in could not have been easier. The house has everything you could possibly need for a relaxing stay. There were only 2 of us but the house is huge. Definitely enough space for several people. It’s only 20 minutes to Acadia and Bar Harbor but you feel like you’re hundreds of miles from civilization; seclusion with convenience. I highly recommend this rental and would absolutely stay here again.

My family (husband, myself, and 3 adult sons ages 19, 22, 26) had our first week long vacation in years. I chose the perfect state, the perfect region, the perfect time of year, and the perfect place to stay. This home provided plenty of space for my adult family. There are 2 floors, 2 kitchens, 2 bathrooms, 1 bedroom with a comfy king sized bed, and living areas with Murphy beds. The second floor has a balcony with an incredible view of Acadia National Park across the water. The yard has a fire pit, which we used many nights. Plenty of room to play games and do puzzles and watch baseball games together. It was truly one of the best vacations we ever had together!

Certainly one of our best vacations as a Family. You just cant beat this place. Fantastic views, extremely relaxing and it affords you the flexibility to spend quality time with your family. Kayaking right out your backdoor with seals and porpoises. Just unbelievable. Liz and Mike are so friendly and thier local knowledge was key to great food and adventure. Highly recommended this place!!!

Great views, comfortable, clean, peaceful
Our family of 5 with dog had a wonderful stay! Best views of western bay and mountains of Mount Desert. The large rock by the shoreline was a great place to star gaze and watch the sunrise. We are able to launch our kayaks off the shoreline to watch the sunset and visit Black island across the water. Kitchen also had everything we needed to cook at home. Comfortable, clean, spacious with lovely gardens. Would definitely consider coming back here when we are visiting Acadia again. Thank you to the friendly hosts for allowing us to rent this special place!

Beautiful Views
We enjoyed our stay. The house worked for our family of 10 despite the lack of formal bedrooms except for one. The views of Acadia from the house were absolutely incredible. Everyone loved being able to walk right down to the water and explore the shore. We drove to Bar Harbor and Acadia every day to enjoy the park and enjoyed the fire pit and a supermoon over Acadia at night. We would love to return someday.

Terrific property
This property has everything - stunning views, great location, super amenities, and terrific hosts. Be advised that there is only one private bedroom - the remainder of the beds are Murphy beds (both very comfortable) and sofa pull outs (didn’t need those), but the living areas and bathrooms are great. The kitchen is as well-stocked with utensils and cookware as home. Highly recommend this property.

Wonderful setting to recharge
We had a fantastic week at the Barn. The setting is over the top beautiful. Liz and Mike were excellent hosts and clearly take great pride in their gardens and property. They met us upon arrival and gave us a quick orientation to the space. We felt instantly at home. Beautiful kitchen with a huge table to gather. Good condition cookware, accessories and sharp knives. Beds were comfy with plenty of linens. Loved the little things, like access to washers and dryers, fans in the bedrooms, coasters on the bedside tables and vacuums charged and ready if needed.
We enjoyed sunrises and sunsets by the water, fire pits and kayaks in the bay. Great location that was close enough to Bar Harbor and great restaurants and activities, but away from the crowds. Will definitely consider renting here again! Thanks Liz!

Summer Vacation
Our family (my husband and four teens) were very comfortable staying in this spacious home with a stunning view of the ocean! Our hosts were very friendly and accessible when we needed. We highly recommend this home. Be sure to take advantage of the balcony chairs on the upper deck!

Can’t pick a better spot
It all starts at the driveway. It’s about a 1/4 mile long and winds through the trees. You get to the end and there is the house and that view! We loved the open downstairs concept and Liz’s fantastic kitchen. Oh and the view from the double sliding doors. The fire pit area is beautiful and surrounded by a beautiful perennial garden. It felt like each day something new was in bloom.
Our kids commandeered the upstairs for the first week of our vacation so we didn’t get to take full advantage of the upper deck which included visits from a humming bird. And the view! Did I mention that?
The location of the house in Trenton is perfect. Far enough out of the hub-bub to feel secluded, but close enough to Acadia and Bar Harbor that we made several trips in. Also close to Ellsworth for shopping for necessities. The Schoodic area of Acadia isn’t too far away either and definitely a much see.
The only thing to note for those traveling with pets is there is a pet addenda which adds a fee per week per dog that is not mentioned in the description of the property. We had our three dogs with us for two weeks so it added up. Still much less than having them stay at a kennel but a cost to consider. Knowing about the fee in advance would not have changed our minds about staying at the barn and I hope it doesn’t change yours either.

Peaceful getaway
We enjoyed our stay at the barn. It was peaceful, yet Bar Harbor and Acadia were still a short drive by car. The owner was great at communicating, and we are thankful for that. It’s not really a 3 bedroom as listed, but it worked fine our our 2 families.

Liz is wonderful and was so kind to share her piece of paradise with us. The kitchen is wonderful and views - hands down are the best!

The Barn
The view was great and we had a great time kayaking and swimming right outside the back door. Close enough to Bar Harbor and Acadia, but we still had a quiet, spot to ourselves and family. Great time!

Absolutely Beautiful
I cannot say enough on how we enjoyed our stay. The house was exactly what we needed and its all about location, location, location. Perfect in every way. We had white tail deer walk right up to the patio door along with a pair of turkeys. Bald Eagles flying along the shore, porpoise searching for food and loons every day. Acadia National Park only 20 minutes away and we took advantage of that every day. Scenery was absolutely breathtaking....fall colors were in their prime and everywhere you looked it was like a "post card." We already decided we would like to come back in the summer and experience some different adventures in the area. Thank you so much for having a wonderful place available for rent.

The view was everything we had hoped for!
We had a great week at the Red Barn! Our group ranged in age from my 72 year old mother to my 5 year old niece and we all enjoyed the house and yard so much. We loved seeing porpoises and seals swim by and watching the tide come in and out and then searching the shore for sea creatures. It's not a bad drive into Acadia- we went most days and loved it!!
There is only one bedroom and other beds are in the living areas but there is an upstairs and downstairs living area and an upstairs and downstairs bathroom so it worked ok for our group.
I had a couple of questions when we arrived and they were promptly responded to by Liz.
We had a great trip and would love to return someday in fall!!

Absolutely Beautiful & Clean
We really enjoyed our stay at the "Barn". The home is beautifully situated on a very large body of water. I think it is called Mt. Desert Narrows. We saw boats, kayakers, and a harbor seal that came by two consecutive evenings. My children loved the shoreline and the beautiful "table rock". The home has a beautiful drive in through a wooded forest. Very close to all the attractions. The owners are fabulous and made us feel welcome. The interior is stocked with everything. The unit has a separate bedroom upstairs with a king bed. Also, upstairs is a living area with a full kitchen. You will find a pull out couch and murphy bed upstairs too. Downstairs has a gas fireplace and remodeled decor. It has a classic nautical New England feel. I highly recommend and would love to come back and stay. My mother-in-law approved. Thank you Liz.

Great house. Amazing view. The nicest owner!
We attempted a trip to Maine with an almost 4 month old and 8 month old. Our friends and us like to hike so we figured we would take our babies on their first trip to a National Park and thought the best way would be to rent a house. This house was perfect for us. It had two of everything...laundry, bathrooms, kitchens so we were able to feel like we were each on our own family vacations yet still able to enjoy eachothers company doing daily hikes, making breakfast and having fantastic dinners with all the lobster rolls we could find. It is so lovely to be able to walk straight down to the water and see the sunset at night and wake up watching the sun rise from the top deck! So so beautiful. We also found a resident Porcupine who lives in the tree just a bit up the driveway! :)
On our way home, I realized I forgot my engagement ring and my grandmothers ring at the house. I quickly contacted Liz and she immediately had someone check if the rings were there. She then stayed in contact with me until she could get them in her possession and shipped them to me overnight. She is quite an amazing person! Thank you thank you!
We so loved the house and if we do another trip to Acadia National Park, we will be back!

Wonderful getaway near MDI!
My husband and I have visited the MDI area three times in the last eight years. We enjoy it more with each successive stay. The Barn is the perfect location to get away from the heat and hustle and bustle of everyday life. Pretty much everything is easily accessible from this location. We rented kayaks and paddled right off the shore of the property into Western Bay. We were with 2 other couples (all of us celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary this year), and the Barn was the perfect setting for us. We toasted s'mores every night by the fire pit and enjoyed the star-filled skies. We had everything we needed. My only note is that while the Barn is listed as a 3 bedroom unit, technically there's only one bedroom. Fortunately we are all good enough friends that this lack of privacy wasn't a huge issue, but just a head's up. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the sounds of the bay waters enhanced this idyllic setting. Both bathrooms are large and it was wonderful having two washer/dryers and two coffee makers. The kitchen/dining combo made for a splendid cooking/dining experience. Thank you, Liz, for allowing us to rent and enjoy your little piece of paradise!

BREATHTAKING - Wonderful House!!
Our family of eight stayed at the Barn at Mainstay in the month of March. We have been vacationing in Maine for about 20 years in different cabins and homes. We can say with all certainty that "the Barn at Mainstay" will be our "permanent" vacation house! The views are spectacular. The home was clean and the furnishings were all so nice. We loved daily shell hunting and the kids loved playing in the very big yard and woods in the back. Our family definitely recommends this beautiful home!

A"maine"zing stay at the barn!
This was our first visit to Maine. We were thrilled with the amazing view of the water and easy access for kayaking! (We were right across from several islands to explore) We spent most nights outside enjoying the view on the very cozy outdoor furniture next to the fire. The kitchen was well equipped with anything and everything you would need. High end cookwear and knife set! (We are from New Orleans so we like a good kitchen to cook in). The owner was easy to reach when we had a minor issue. The barn at Mainstay was fabulous.

Wonderful Vacation!
My husband, myself and my parents along with our two four legged friends stayed here for a week towards the end of September and had a wonderful, relaxing and amazing vacation. The property is simply beautiful! So peaceful, wonderful views, great access to the ocean. The home itself is also perfect, with plenty of space and everything you need right there. It is located close enough to the town of Bar Harbor and to Acadia National Park to be able to see everything you would want to see and experience, while being able to enjoy your own quiet piece of paradise at the end of the day. We hated to leave after our wonderful week there, but am looking forward to hopefully being able to go back again to enjoy this beautiful property next year.

Perfect Place
Beautiful house and grounds with an incredible view! The house worked well for our two families. The location was ideal for us as we ventured into Bar Harbor and Acadia often. One of our favorite modern updates in the house - the countertops in the main level kitchen. The owner was very responsive and easy to work with.

Beautiful, Peaceful, Comfortable and Entertaining~!
Our family of 6 completely enjoyed ourselves in your home. We rented kayaks for the week and enjoyed ourselves so much paddling the surrounding waters, watching the seals and exploring Alley island that we didn't make it to Acadia park until the following week. Which, by the way, is stunning! My 6 y/o son asked for his birthday if we could go back to Maine...and this was after we completed our 12 hour drive home. I would be happy to oblige him~! Thank you and we hope to come back again soon.

A little piece of paradise
We were thrilled to arrive at "The Barn". This very tastefully house has everything!
Charm, spectacular views of the water and landscape and a cosy gas fire. There is nothing you will want for in this home.
The garden has plenty of space and a lovely seating/dinning area to take in the breath taking views of the ocean.
Liz was very helpful. Her information about places to visit was great! We loved Acadia and got to try some fresh lobster!
We had a very relaxing and refreshing weekend. We will definitely be back.!!!

Absolutely Perfect!!
I don't believe the owner's description does this property justice. We were expecting something nice - but our expectations were completely blown away upon our arrival.
The property was absolutely breathtaking and our stay could not possibly have been any better (although we did luck out with great weather). From drinking our coffee on the porch - overlooking Acadia National Park - while watching the sunrise, to the peace, serenity and relative seclusion of its location, to the modern amenities that you would otherwise expect while staying at a hotel - just absolutely amazing.
Liz (the owner) was a pleasure to work with and was highly responsive and accommodating. She was so incredibly amazing to us. The property has been in her family for many years. You can tell she cares a great deal about it from speaking with her, but it's even more evident when you see it in person.
If you have ANY doubts about renting this property - don't. You will not be disappointed. We can't wait to go back and rent it again.

Vacation at Mainstay
The Barn at Mainstay is a wonderful vacation house. My husband and his parents and I stayed there the last week of September and it was just a great vacation. The house is in the woods but easy to get to. The view from the back of the house is just incredible. We had coffee outside in the mornings on the deck with a great view of the mountains and water. Everything is close by, Bar Harbor, and Acadia so you don't have to travel far and you have piece and quiet at night. The house is equipt with everything you need. It is perfect for a family getaway. We enjoyed cooking dinners together and ordering in lobster!!! Can't wait to be able to return.

An amazing vacation!
What an incredible vacation. We had four adults and four children (ages 6-13) staying at this house and it was perfect. We used the entire second floor for sleeping and the first floor for eating and hanging out. The house is great. It has everything you will need. The location is perfect -- secluded, but easy to get everywhere. And, the view cannot be beat. I would highly recommend this property.
We rented kayaks one day (Acadia 1 will deliver) and went out straight from the beach at this house -- it was incredible. This is a prime location for kayaking. I hope to be back next summer!

Very comfortable, beautiful views, perfect for a trip to Mt. Desert Island
We had a wonderful one-week visit at Main Stay. The house was huge for our family, despite its listing as a one-bedroom. Our daughter slept on the upstairs Murphy bed, we used the bedroom, and we still had the whole of the downstairs as a shared common space, kitchen, living room, etc. There were a lot of amenities not mentioned explicitly in the listing: a pair of powerful binoculars, for instance, and DVD players both upstairs and down.
We drove into Acadia National Park every day of our stay -- very close, but still able to leave the crowds of Mount Desert Island housing and return to our own private beach each night. The views were spectactular as we ate breakfast and dinner; the fishing boat anchored just offshore picturesque and everything amazingly quiet.
One morning, just after dawn and in the fog, I saw a fox crossing the driveway!
We loved the house and wish we could live there forever.
